- COMMUNITY NEWS
On Monday 12th of August the sun was shining for our Pop up Shops community event. Students have been working hard all year on their Business Enterprise projects, the quality of creative products on sale was outstanding. This year was bigger and better than ever, with students from West Leeming Primary School and clients from Bethanie Aged Care attending. Yaz Mubarakai MLA, WA Labor Member for Jandakot also attended and made sure he bought an item from every stand! The atmosphere of the day was buzzing with excitement and students enjoyed engaging with the community and extending their learning outside the classroom. We have some very good sales people among our students, majority of products were sold, raising important donations to the chosen charity for each class. Next term students will have the opportunity to continue their creative talents and sell their products at the ESSN Market Day on Friday 1st November. This is a community event for all the Education Support Centres and Schools in the South Metropolitan Region. All families are welcome to attend and further information will be sent home closer to the date.
Parents, teachers, therapists, local coordinators and students have recently been involved in IEP and My Plan planning meetings. These collaborative meetings are very important in setting personal education, social and emotional goals that meet the individual needs of our students. This collaborative approach ensures our students have the full support of school, home and services with a range of resources to achieve their goals. Thank you to everyone involved, your input is valued and appreciated. I have been very impressed with the achievements of our senior students and their exciting plans for the future through the My Plan process. These students are at a very busy stage of the year transitioning into work, further education and disability organisation programs.
Two projects are due to be completed during the next school holidays. Firstly, the Aulberry Parade school car park will be extended to provide an additional fifty new car park bays. As both Leeming SHS and Leeming ESC continue to grow the current car park does not cater for the number of staff and students on campus. The outdoor classroom near the vegetable garden will be converted to a multipurpose classroom to provide additional classroom space in 2020. We have also applied for additional transportable classrooms to accommodate our growing student numbers.
Students have been thoroughly enjoying the after school Athletics and Bush Ranger programs this term. Thank you to the Bush Ranger committee, I have enjoyed learning about the Native Bee Hive project and look forward to seeing the finished product at the ESSN Market Day. A big thank you also to Ms Heard for organising the Athletics program, there is a large group of students joining in every Tuesday afternoon to prepare for the upcoming athletics carnivals this term. Thank you also to all the staff who volunteer their time after school to support these programs for our students.
Music Rocks Australia program started in week one this term. This program provides an opportunity for students to learn to play a musical instrument or sing as part of a band. At the end of the ten-week program there will be a concert for the students involved to showcase their musical skills with family, friends and staff.
As you can see our students are very busy with a range of exciting programs in Term 3!
A reminder Monday 26th August is a School Development Day and students do not attend school on this day.
The School Board met on August 5th and we discussed the School Community Support Project and due to the tremendous level of care and interest from the school community we have excellent supplies at the present time and so we do not require any specific items.
At our next meeting we will review this and report to you of any particular items that would be helpful. Thank you again for your generous spirit.
Among other items we discussed the good attendance at the Parent Network Meetings and the topics for the remainder of the year, information on the Pop Up Shops, an update of capital works around our campus and enjoyed presentations from staff and students on the Bush Ranger program and Senior School curriculum. The involvement of students in these presentations is always a highlight for the members of the Board. A particular thank you to Mrs Vann's class who gave a Welcome to Country before our meeting commenced and Caden Sharp for his presentation.

INVESTIGATING PARENTS: INFORMATION SESSION
Many parents have asked for information regarding ‘how to enrol’ into Leeming Education Support Centre (LESC).
This is not the same process as for mainstream enrolment and does involve collecting relevant information and making an informed placement decision.
To assist parents through the process Leeming ESC holds regular ‘Information Sessions’.
These sessions include:
1. Enrolment and Eligibility Criteria
2. Legal and Department requirements
3. Enrolment Process
4. Discussion and a Checklist
5. Quick tour and discussion on what the Centre offers.
The next session is:
Tuesday 29th October 9.30-11.00am
Dawn Barker, is the parent of one of our year 11 students and, is a great source of information with regard to accessing services and discounts for students with a disability. Dawn has been busy researching help that families may be able to access. Did you know that if you have a child with a disability you may receive a discount on your Synergy bill? If you speak to Synergy accounts and add your child with the disability to the account then you may be eligible for a WA Government Energy Assistance Payment of $46.33 for each bill. She has also researched NDIS funding to find out that families may be eligible for a package for bedwetters, help with self care, transport, camps and TAFE courses. For further information about the NDIS, the website at https://www.ndis.gov.au/index.html is also helpful. Dawn has been invited to be a speaker at our next Parent Network Meeting on Monday 23rd September at 12pm in our ESC Conference Room. Dawn’s presentation on “Tips and Tricks” will be about accessing services, payments and discounts for your child with a disability.

On Monday 12th August students, staff, family, friends and community members came together for our annual Leeming Pop Up Shops. We could not have asked for a more perfect winter’s day as the sun shone on a spectacular display of students showcasing their creative streak. Leeming Pop Up Shops sees students creating innovative enterprise products in the classroom and then coming together to sell these at a community event. The standard of enterprise products this year was exceptionally high. Homemade bread boards, aboriginal inspired pot plants, hand made cards, lanyards, spices, inspirational rocks, silly putty and recycled shopping bags all sold well. Pumpkin soup and a sausage sizzle were also popular. It was wonderful to see so many invited community members attend this year including 2 classes from West Leeming Primary School, residents from Bethanie Aged Care and our local Member for Jandakot, Yaz Mubarakai. This event enables so many learning opportunities for our students as they create and then interact with their peers and others to sell their products. A memorable quote from one of our students about the day was that they enjoyed “making crafts for people who want them so much they spend money.” Thanks to all parents, friends and community members who attended and supported Leeming Pop Up shops 2019.

On Friday 9th August Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC came together to celebrate Multicultural Day. Many of our students participated in an array of different activities including a flamenco dancing workshop, henna painting, dressing up in costume for friendship photos and contributing to a whole school mural which has been painted in magnificent colour on the Leeming SHS science block. Our year 10’s also sold spices from around the world. If you were lucky enough to purchase one of these packets check out the accompanying labels and the famous world landmarks drawn by our very own talented artists! Thanks to Bettina Carter the Leeming SHS chaplain who coordinated this event that was thoroughly enjoyed by our students.

Term 3 is off to a fabulous start in ESC 2! All our students returning back to school with a big smile on their faces and ready to tackle new challenges.
It has been a pleasure to meet so many parents in the last couple of weeks as we reviewed our My Plans. It is pleasing to see the growth in maturity and independence of students in the last six months.
We had a busy term as we work on developing clock reading skills in our Math program. Students have been working on telling the time and using Transperth Journey Planner to plan their route to and from various venues.
We have also been busy making bookmarks and tic tac toe set for the Pop up Shop day. Kudo to the amazing staff of ESC2 who helped students to create and beautify the bookmarks and tic tac toe sets. Students were actively involved in the decision making process and unanimously agreed to give the profits to CanTeen.
Some students were also involved in the Notre Dame PE program. They have working on developing their gross motor skills and have learning to play in games such as tunnel ball, basketball and soccer.

Term 2 ended on a high with our Leaver’s Camp to Pemberton, 01st – 05 July, 2019. An adventurous tour of the South West including:
- Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk, 40 metres above ground, an Autopsy of a Tree, and the Ancient Empire Ground Walk situated between Walpole and Denmark
- WOW Wilderness cruise on the Nornalup Inlet, Walpole
- Lake Cave Megafauna and Mammoth Cave Tour, Boranup
- Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Tour
- Pemberton Pioneer Museum
- Southern Forest Arts and Nature Tour, Northcliffe

The breath taking scenes and amazing tours will long be remembered as a special time of bonding for the Leavers in ESC1. Many thanks to camp staff: Leigh Caddy, Sonia Soares, Stephanie McCaskie and Kerryn Coles.
Upon return, staff, parents and students, held a sausage sizzle fundraiser, at Bunnings O’Connor, for Graduation. The public support was amazing on the day as we raised $996.80 A big thank you to Leticia Grant, Kelvin and Allara May, Michelle and William Costa, Laura and Jake Allington, Denise and Sarah Convery, Sarah Jane Sharp, Sonia Soares and Rick Miller for their support on the day.

To continue our fundraising endeavours, the students, and staff of ESC1, are to be commended for raising an additional $490.00, at Leeming’s Pop Up Stalls. Our Tennis Ball Holders, Flip Rocks and Sausage Sizzle run by Mr Zivkovic, and Sarah Jane Sharp was a huge hit.

A big congratulations to Christy Newton for receiving the Merit Certificate for ESC1, to Elizabeth Trott for gaining a work trial at Activ Bentley, and to Gerald Chang for gaining an additional day of employment at Alinea Inc. With so little time left, I implore that all students embrace every day, enjoy every moment and every memory.
Term 3, (August & September) brings the Noongar season of DJILBA - The Second rains. Djilba – is known as the Growing season. As boodja (land) becomes littered with an explosion of new growth, Djilba signifies renewal, new beginnings and the future. Last term as part of our Frog Pond and Garden project, the students planted a variety of Aboriginal bush tucker and water plants. Students are learning how Aboriginal people used plants as a way of living on the land. This term, students will dual sign the plants and create posters to display their learning with others. Maintaining the garden has brought a strong sense of belonging and caring for their environment. It is a very enjoyable and rewarding team project that takes our learning out into the natural environment supporting students to connect to the land and boost their health and wellbeing.

The Noongar Choir opened the School Board meeting singing the Noongar and proudly shared their Aboriginal work.
Students, weather permitting, will be accessing public transport to journey to Gateways for our CBL this term. Remember to wear your wet weather gear!
Our stall at the Pop Up Shop was a huge success. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we sold out all of our recycled items. The students at West Leeming Primary School especially loved the lily pad slime with frogs and our bird feeders were very popular too. We managed to raise $131.45. Awesome effort ESC 5.

I would like to thank parents, families and specialists for your time and valuable contributions in the IEP meetings. The meetings created a wonderful opportunity to meet with student’s families and supportive networks to work collaboratively to enrich the learning of each student. Thank you!
Communication is the key and this term, students have taken on the responsibility of collating important dates and events into their diaries to communicate between school and home. Please can I encourage families to support your child to be responsible for their diaries and sharing information.
A warm thank you from,
Mrs Vann, Mrs. Broadhurst, Ms. Smith and Ms. Palmer.
Half way through term 3 and ESC6 have already achieved and experienced so much! The last couple of weeks my hardworking year 8’s spent their time and efforts preparing for the 2019 ESC Pop-Up Shops. ESC6 utilised our Enterprise skills and decided to make and sell Silly Putty. We designed some AMAZING and enticing posters full of colour and information to advertise our product around the centre. We then started producing our Silly Putty using 5 simple ingredients, and packaged and labelled the putty using tubs and zip lock bags. ESC6 loved every minute of the Pop-Up Shop from working the stall and handling money, to browsing and purchasing products from other classes. It was the best Pop-Up Shop yet, and it was great to see so many members of the community and Parents/Carers attend. In week 4 we participated in a range of fun and interesting activities to celebrate Multicultural Day. The highlights were dressing up in traditional clothes from around the world, and posing in the photo booth with friends, getting Henna designs on our hands from Mrs M and spray painting blocks to add to a school mural. What a crazy and fun start to semester 2, we are so lucky! We are looking forward to beginning our term 3 CBL program in week 5, where we will set off using public transport to Garden City Shopping Centre!

ESC 7.1 has been involved in lots of exciting and interactive learning this term. We’ve been busy tree planting, on National Tree Planting Day 2019, as a part of our Bush Rangers conservation project.

Selling our Seeds of Love seed bombs at the Pop Up Shops and engaging in a range of multicultural activities for our school Multicultural Day.

What a busy start to Term 3 and we are nearly half way through the term! The little elves in ESC 8 were very busy in weeks 1 to 3 gearing up for the Pop Up Shop. The students in ESC 8 have been working on making these items for sale since Term 1 using recycled materials in their art sessions. They displayed team work by making posters, choosing the name of our shop, ‘The 3Rs Shop’ and made the Pop Up shop a great success with their salesmanship. Our plants, wooden robots and dogs were much in demand. A big Thankyou to our customers (parents and community members) who supported us in every way and encouraged the students.
In week one, we participated along with the other year 7 classes, on a conservation project. On Friday the 26th of July was National Tree Plantation Day and the students planted trees to provide a habitat for the Red Tailed Black Cockatoos. It was a hands on experience and the students took pride in what they planted in order to conserve the environment as a Bush Ranger.

The Multicultural Day brought the whole school together and the students got a taste of different cultures by visiting different activity areas and tried on costumes from different countries. It was a day of fun for staff and students.
In STEM Science the students worked in groups to make a volano and used household materials to make lava. They were all waiting for a big bang to happen! An enriching experience for the students which kept them engaged throughout the experiment.
The whole class participates in chat group which enables all students to use the talker to communicate with non-verbal students. This has made a huge difference in making more friendships and learning about each other.

Term 3, CBL has also started and we have started travel training by using public transport to travel to Southland Shopping Centre. The bus took us the bus to Murdoch Train Station and the students got the opportunity to look for the bus stop where to board the next bus from. The students are practicing using the SmartRider, load money on it, tag on and tag off. They are also learning how to carry their bags while boarding the bus and where to place it. I am so proud of my students as they are beginning to demonstrate responsible behaviour when out in the community and while using the bus. Keep up the great work, ESC 8!

We have started Term 3 at full speed! Pop-up Shop, Multicultural day and option classes have kept us very busy!
On Monday 12th of August, we took part in Leeming SHS ESC Pop-Up Shop Day enterprise. Our ‘Inspirational Photo Frames’ sold out in just the first hour! We were so pleased with the outcome and cannot wait to make more for Market Day in Term 4. In Music, we are learning to play the keyboard with Mrs Damos and Miss Hart, we definitely have some young musicians in our mix. Last week for Multicultural Day, the students had the opportunity to experience many cultures through painting, dance, music and traditional clothing. In Science this term, we are focusing on Biological Sciences, investigating migration patterns, how things grow and how all of this is affected by global warming. There is so much learning happening in ESC 9, check out a few photos below!

This term we have been doing a lot of work on maths. We have been adding doubles and I have enjoyed it a lot.
Poppy
We have been going to Notre Dame to do sport. We have been given a buddy to help us. We talk with our buddy and play football and do warm ups. It is fun.
Nabillah.
We did Pop Up Shop. We made and then sold key rings, necklaces, bracelets and lanyards. We had fun. We made lots of money. There were hot dogs for lunch. I saw Adam and everybody there. I helped Poppy with opening the door for the adults.
Sian.
This term we have learning about biomes. There is desert, ocean, tropical, mediterranean and temperate biomes in Australia. A biome has a certain climate with plants and animals who can live there.
Charlotte.
We did multicultural day, it’s for celebrating other cultures. I listened to the music. I watched one of the mainstream students play the bagpipes. Some people got henna tattoos.
Adam.

Our Pop Up Shop
We offered decorated terracotta pots complete with beautiful succulent plants as our contribution to the pop-up shop event held in week four. It was pleasing to note that our pots were complimented by almost everyone that saw them. They were so popular that more than fifty percent had sold out before the day and they were completely sold out well before the pop-up shop event closed. We made around $ 150 profit and the students can be justly proud of their efforts. Half the money raised will go to a charity of our choice and the other half will go into the class budget.

Bush Rangers
Just an update on our native bushland rejuvenation project. The plants we obtained continue to establish themselves really well and we can all see that the everlasting seeds that we planted Last term are well on the way to giving us a beautiful display in the spring. We also have a couple of Kangaroo Paws that are already flowering. We are now looking forwards to enjoying a beautiful backdrop to the classroom in the spring hopefully with plenty of birds continuing to visit the flowers.

Community Based Learning and Bushrangers
So far this term we have visited the Canning Vale Resource Recovery Centre. The staff and students alike, were amazed at the good work done at the recycling centre. The contents from thousands of yellow top bins are delivered to the site every day. The $20 million machine that they use to separate out paper, plastic, glass and cans was the most impressive point of the visit.

WPL
All the students have settled in well to their new placements for Semester Two and each has reported back that they are enjoying themselves whilst learning valuable industry-based skills. This semester we have students working in the hospitality, horticulture, warehousing and manufacturing industries. It is important at this stage that they are exposed to a variety of industries so that they can make informed choices about their future pathways.

The staff from ESC 15 are looking forwards to another very productive term.
Mr Roberts
Through the ADWPL (Authority Developed Workplace Learning) program senior students have the opportunity to trial 4 different industry areas during years 11 and 12. Students get a practical, hands on experience to find out which industry they may wish to pursue further post school. This semester the students have commenced their work experience placements trialling a second industry for the year. We would like to congratulate the following year 11 students who this term have transitioned to independence in their workplaces. These students are working directly with their host employers to carry out allocated tasks throughout a variety of industries: Brittany, Kayla, Kiara, Tarkin, Tyler and Wil.

Graduate student William Costa has been selected as an “All Star” to represent his workplace Activ in the City to Surf on August 25th. Here are some photos that were taken of William at the Activ head office. William was part of a special morning tea meeting with the CEO Danielle to receive his shirt for the upcoming event. William attended the morning tea with his supervisor Mitchell and Bentley site manager Matthew. Awesome achievement, congratulations William!!
Physical Education Classes
This term, all physical education classes have been participating in Athletics to get prepared for the Athletics Carnivals in weeks 8 and 9. Students have been practising their running and learning new skills in javelin, discus and long jump. Classes have also been practising team games such as tunnel ball, under-over and pass ball. The year 7 and 8 classes have also been lucky enough to be involved in a Yoga/ mediation program once a week for the whole term. Students have been learning a range of yoga positions and stretches as well as mindful meditation practise at the end of their sessions, focussing on relaxing and breathing.
After-hours athletics program
It is fantastic to see so many students attending the after-hours athletics program. We have had over 40 students at each lesson, participating in a range of athletics events such as javelin, discus, sprints, relays and team games. Thank you to all students who come and try their best, showing enthusiasm and positive attitudes! Also thank you to the amazing staff members who have volunteered their time to help run the sessions!
