Term 2 is about celebrating culture and community through engaging in community events with our partner school, Leeming SHS and our school community. These events are always a highlight and showcase the vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive community we strive to achieve.
Leeming SHS ESC has celebrated the annual event New Beginnings to an Old Story for the past five years. This year, we continued to celebrate and learn more about the past, present, and future knowledge of the First Nations people through Bilya Booladarlung, Indigenous Tours, the Stephen Michael Foundation, and Djirrily Dreaming. Thank you to Mrs Vann, Mrs Smith and Mrs Palmer for your dedication and passion in organising this culture and community event.
On Thursday, 25th May, we celebrated culture and community with Leeming SHS at an inclusive assembly. Congratulations to our award winners. Fatima Salman and Zoe Balcombe received the Vocational Education and Training Award for completing their school-based traineeships. The Citizenship Award went to Ruby Trott for her contributions and connections to the school and local community. Ruby has actively participated in the Keep Australia Beautiful WA Adopt-a-Spot Initiative and the after-school Bush Ranger program.
On Tuesday, 18th June, Leeming SHS ESC held the Annual Pop-Up Shops. This event is always a highlight of the year, with students selling a wide range of creative products they have produced as part of their class Business Enterprise. Through this program, students develop work capability skills such as creativity, teamwork, collaboration, planning, problem-solving, and initiative. It was wonderful to have students from Leeming and West Leeming primary schools attending, along with a massive turnout of Leeming SHS students and staff. It was a wonderful day full of energy, excitement, and community connection.
The final event for the term will be the EXPO on Tuesday, 25th June, with 26 Service Providers for employment, leisure and recreation, therapy, support coordination and NDIS partners in the community attending. The information evening will be for all families, and we encourage you to attend.
Next term we welcome Liz Mary Shaji in year 10 as Mrs Vann goes on long service leave. We also welcome back Ms Hugo and Mrs Parwani to year 10 and farewell Mr Harries. Thankyou Mr Harriesf for a wonderful semester with our year 10 class
It has been a long and productive term, and I am sure everyone is looking forward to a well-earned holiday break.
Wow, how are we already in the middle of the school year? This term was not only a long one but full of exciting events, such as ‘New Beginnings to an Old Story’ & the amazing pop-up market, which gave families/carers opportunities to visit the school & take part in as well. It was wonderful seeing the students engage with others as they proudly showed off their stalls & hopefully raised a lot of money for their chosen charities.
The board members met twice this term to discuss all the school's behind-the-scenes business. Board members all completed their inductions and some training on our roles/responsibilities and went through the safety intervention/critical incident planning strategies presented by Kerryn Coles. We touched on Capital and Minor works happening around the school, and Lou FP spent time discussing the topic of ‘Therapists at School,’ which she also did an amazing job covering in-depth at one of our Parent Network Meetings. Plans for the annual Leeming Alumni Event in November have started, spearheaded by long-time board member Dawn Barker, who did a fantastic job organising last year’s event. Leeming ESC will also partner with Mirrabooka ESC, Dianella ESC, and SIDE (School of Isolated and Distant Education) as part of the Quality Teacher Strategy and will review outcomes in the next six months. A new school website is also in the works and will hopefully be up and running soon.
The highlight of the term two board meetings was the students' presentations. Class leaders, house captains, councillors, and bushrangers came in to share their experiences with us. We learned more about their roles and were even serenaded with a didgeridoo performance by one of the students. We were particularly impressed by Jessica’s presentation as she shared her TAFE journey with her AMA course Certificate in Community Health and Wellbeing and found out that she also holds a World Fishing Record!
A big thank you to all the parents and staff members of the board and the families/staff at large. Your tireless dedication and hard work never goes unnoticed, and we genuinely appreciate all you do for our kids.
Have a well-deserved break & see you all in term 3!

This term we have continued the explicit teaching of expected behaviours through our weekly PBS lessons. The last 5 weeks of the term focused on:
Self-Responsibility: We are on time and organised for lessons Teamwork: We collaborate with others |
Here are the current student and staff USTAR winners, announced at our week 10 ESC assembly:
Anisha Manokaran
Congratulations to ESC8 for winning the USTAR Award for our focus value;
Self-Responsiblity.
The Leeming ESC PBS Wrist Band system to acknowledge student USTAR point milestones has been received well and it has been wonderful to see students wearing their wrist bands proudly! Congratulations to the students who have reached their 50 and 100 USTAR point milestone and are working towards their 200 point milestone!
The PBS Team have also made and displayed framed posters around the school as a reminder to staff and students of our 5 USTAR values.
Thank you to those who took the time to review our updated Behaviour Matrix and send in feedback. The PBS Team have finalised a completed copy and distributed posters to each classroom to display.

In the latest update from ESC 2, our outstanding students have been showcasing exceptional dedication and effort in their classroom work. Everyone has demonstrated remarkable perseverance and enthusiasm throughout the term despite it being an extra-long term.
All students have been actively completing the Dreamcatchers for our upcoming pop-up shop during the term. This project not only highlights the group's creativity but also serves as a platform for practical skills development and community engagement. As preparations for the pop-up shop continue, we all eagerly look forward to showcasing these beautiful creations, celebrating the students' artistic abilities and collaborative team spirit.
Students have also been making strides in the Preliminary English units, with Preliminary assessments showing notable improvement in writing and verbal communication. They have dedicated time to researching various job opportunities and assessing their suitability, demonstrating a proactive approach to career exploration and future planning. Students presented their chosen pathways to their peers in class.
It was great to see all students actively participate in the annual 'New Beginning to an Old Story’ incursion activities on Friday, the 7th of June. I was very impressed with their engagement while listening to the Elder Dreamtime stories and artistic painting in the Collective Canvas activities.

We look forward to finishing this semester positively as a group and preparing for the final semester of school for these students.
This term has been an amazing and busy experience for our class team in ESC3. Students have all worked very hard to progress their learning, alongside preparing for our whole school events, such as our Year 10 Assembly and the amazing Pop-Up Shop market!
In maths, students worked hard on their financial skills in preparation for the Pop-up shops and our community-based learning. On CBL we have been using public transport to get to Garden City shopping centre. As in Term 1, students have all represented their school perfectly, following instructions and making the most of this important learning experience.
We have been finalising our ASDAN Workright and E-Safety programs, assisting the staff at the nearby Striker’s Gym to complete their required cleaning tasks, during workplace learning. Students have enjoyed this program and have engaged with the staff there respectfully and professionally.
The students have also been very creative this term, making our three market products, which were hot sellers on the day, with two thirds of our stock sold! The students enjoyed learning how to pot succulent plants, create personalised pet rocks, and make interesting sensory shakers.
We have focused on building our independent living skills, with STEAM, art, hygiene, and cooking activities being thoroughly enjoyed. Lastly, I was very proud of our fantastic group and their mature efforts in presenting our Year 10 assembly to the school!
ESC 4 - LORRAINE VANN/ELLANOR LIETZOW
Kaya (hello) The classroom has been immersed in Auslan key sing and Aboriginal Education this term. The students greet staff and peers with Auslan finger spelling and have been learning to sign the Sorry Song. We celebrated Reconciliation Week, Sorry Day, the Mabo Decision, and the New Beginnings to an Old Story event and finished the term with a fun day of NAIDOC activities. We shared many stories to deepen our knowledge of Aboriginal history, encompassing the stolen generation and land rights. As part of a school-wide Reconciliation Poster Competition, the class created a deadly informative poster sharing the Sorry message from our learning. We enjoyed singing the Noongar welcome ‘Wanjoo’ and ‘Sorry’ songs and learning many new Noongar language words and Auslan signs. The students have embraced learning the Noongar and Auslan languages, and I am amazed at how quickly they have picked up both languages. Moorditj! (strong).
We continued this theme in Bush Rangers, learning about the Noongar Six Seasons and how nature supplies food, medicine, and natural materials that can be used to make tools, houses, and items for everyday living. We are learning to use natural materials sustainably and care for ourselves and the environment.
Technology has been a huge focus, and the class is practicing logging on to engage with Connect and Seesaw online platforms. Students have demonstrated increased independence in completing a variety of activities with confidence. Riley is the class technology assistant and inputs the daily PBS USTAR value awards (acknowledging students and staff) into the interactive app when displaying (Unity, Self-responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement, or Respect). The class staff are impressed with the student’s engagement with the USTAR values and their ability to reflect on themselves and others to recognise the values displayed.
Recently, students showcased their fantastic business enterprise and work skills in constructing products they sold at the ‘Pop Up Shop.’ Students created cards, bookmarks, second-hand books, and rings. The students celebrated their success by enjoying a delicious, shared lunch at Erika’s family Chinese Restaurant.
The students have displayed resilience and flexibility with staff changes next semester. We farewell Ms. Smith and Ms. Vann and welcome Mrs. Blacklock and Miss M.
What a wonderful Semester 1! ESC4 staff are incredibly blessed to work with such well-mannered, respectful, and eager learners. Thank you to Ms. Harcourt, Ms. Palma, and Ms Smith for their hard work, positivity, and commitment to making a difference daily.

A massive congratulations to each student. Outstanding achievement!
We wish you all a safe, restful, and enjoyable break. Thank you!
Boorda (bye), Mrs. Vann, Ms. Harcourt, Ms. Palma, and Ms. Smith
Students in ESC 5 have been working very hard. Events this term included NAIDOC week, Reconciliation Day, many CBL outings, and our big Pop-up Shop stall. I must congratulate all students and staff for their help in making our ESC 5 ‘pie shop’ run so well. We managed to sell over 180 curry, steak, and apple pies. We are proud to donate most of our profit to the Beyond Blue charity.
Within class, we have covered a lot of content for this term. This has included learning about our history, including convicts and the story of Moondyne Joe. We have also studied different materials we use daily and made a boat, bridge, and building from various materials. Seeing the creative minds we have in ESC 5 as they build their designs is amazing.
We look forward to learning about the Olympics next term and hopefully watching some great events.
Thank you to all staff and parents/carers involved with ESC 5. The support you provide me is amazing. I hope you all enjoy the mid-year holidays.
Jack Drennan
Term 2 has been full of hard work and lots of fun, all at the same time! We have been visiting Willetton Library as part of CBL, and were even lucky enough to be invited on a ‘backstage tour’ to learn more about the role of Librarians and see all of the jobs they have to do.
We joined mainstream when the Water corporation visited for a day, as conservation is part of our Bush Rangers program and ASDAN. In an hour of activities we got to go into three different tents to learn about dams, desalination plants and the water cycle around WA. The most interesting fact we learned was that Earth's total amount of water is fixed. The amount of water is neither gained nor lost between the Earth and its atmosphere!
Like the rest of the school, we have been focused on fitness and mental health by partaking in the Push Up Challenge. Every single one of us has been doing a combination of sit-ups, tricep dips, push-ups, and lunges to ensure that we bank not only the number required for the day but even more to make sure we have earned the money we are raising!
During our Reconciliation Week incursion, we loved dressing up in kangaroo cloaks and experimenting with firesticks and different kinds of fragrant and aromatic plants. Greg Nannups talk was a huge success, and trying out the Indigenous traditional sports was fun.

We've been buzzing with excitement here at ESC7, diving into creativity and cultural exploration! Our candles for the pop-up shop are coming together beautifully, filled with enthusiasm, and decorated with unique names and logos. Each candle shows our love for craftsmanship and innovation. In Hass sessions, the students explored their roots by identifying their birthplaces and learning about maps. The students had fun locating their birthplaces on the map helping them make a strong bond among themselves. The "New Beginnings to an Old Story" event was a deep dive into Aboriginal culture and heritage, uncovering the traditions that have shaped our land. Our students engaged in a variety of Aboriginal sports and Dreamtime stories and learned about the rich heritage and culture of the original people of the land. The event helped them understand our USTAR value of unity and how to treat each other with respect. It's been a month of creativity, discovery, and meaningful connections, and we can't wait for more adventures ahead!
ESC 7

Term 2 has just flown by, it’s almost hard to believe we are on the cusp of Semester 2 already! From week’s 3-7 we welcomed Ms M into our classroom. Ms M completed her final practicum in ESC8 as a pre-service teacher and was a kind, patient, hard-working teacher who engaged us in many wonderful lessons. We are so excited to know that Ms M is now a qualified teacher and will continue working in ESC8 as our Friday teacher next Semester.
In week 9 ESC8 began preparation for the annual Pop-Up Shops. We worked extremely hard and started the production process for our product; Silly Putty! We demonstrated fantastic teamwork and work skills by following a recipe to make the putty, keeping track of our products using an inventory and packaging the products appropriately and attaching the labels. We marketed and advertised our products, leading up to the event, by displaying posters around the centre.
In week 10 the Pop-Up Shops arrived, and we all looked so professional in our Silly Putty t-shirts. Our stall looked awesome, and everyone did a fantastic job at following a work schedule to know when we were on stall duty and when we had shopping time at the other awesome stalls! We kept track of our selling products using an inventory, and handled money and gave our customers their change when necessary.
It was a HUGE success and our stall was very popular, especially with the Primary School students who visited. We sold out!! Altogether we made a profit of $200 and donated 60% of the profit to Autism Association. We will use the remaining of the profit to go towards an end of Semester excursion to the movies to celebrate all our achievements. Well done ESC8!
Happy term 2 holidays everyone! I am looking forward to seeing everyone in person for our Semester 2 parent meetings.
Emma Gage.

In ESC 9, we have been working hard to create products to sell at the upcoming pop-up shops. We have made bracelets, key chains, bag tags and earrings. Some of the work involved using very fine manipulative skills, that challenged everyone. However, they persisted and got great results.
During Bushrangers this term, we enjoyed learning more about the biodiversity in our local area. As a class, we focussed on environmental issues that have impacted the water levels near Bibra Lake and the devastating results of losing so many of the lake's turtles. Next term, we will look at the local area's strategies to combat this issue. We may also visit the area to investigate further.
Through the CBL program, students have visited many stores at Southlands Shopping Centre, including Woolworths, Coles and Best n Less. We have learned to compare prices to find the best value for money and use a given budget to find a suitable winter outfit. We have recently visited community facilities in this area, such as the Dentist, Post Office, and Library, and learned about the many services these community places provide.
We have taken on the Push-Up Challenge this term, and wow! We have some seriously fit students in ESC9. We have combined a variety of exercises, such as push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and mountain climbers, to reach high daily goals of sometimes 120 +. By doing this, we are raising awareness for mental health!
The end of this term is an exciting time for us as we visit Fremantle Prison to experience a convict tour, which links in with our learning in both literacy and HASS. We can’t wait to learn more stories about early settlers and the impact this has since had on Australia.
We hope everyone has a happy and safe winter holiday and are excited for next term, as many of our in-class programs will link to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
ESC 11 - VICKY GIBSON/DAWN SUTHERLAND
ESC 11 has had a busy term with many exciting events. Year 9 students visited Kings Park at the beginning of the term to explore its various features. During week 6, we visited the Electoral Education Centre to learn about the importance of voting and took part in a mock vote. In week 8, students participated in the New Beginnings to an Old Story event at school. Students could try kangaroo hot dogs at the event, watch Aboriginal stories, and enjoy impressive Aboriginal dancing. The students have been fantastic during our events and excursions this term and truly seemed to have enjoyed themselves. In class, we have been working on creating items for pop-up shops, which will be held in week 10. We’re now in the process of designing posters to advertise our stall. In Science, students have been learning about the effects of natural disasters, and in PCP, we have been exploring potential career paths for the future. After a busy and successful semester 1, we can't wait to see what we accomplish next semester.
Mrs Gibson, Mrs Sutherland, and the ESC 11 team.
ESC 14 - LACHIE FREWER/TAMMY MEGRAIL
It is hard to believe, but we have finished semester one already! It has been a fantastic start to the year, filled with fun and engaging activities. Our pop-up shop stall was hugely successful. We made a range of products, including kinetic sand, dried apple slices, and fruit leather. Our class team demonstrated excellent teamwork in assembling all these projects, including allocating roles based on interest. Some of the roles included posters, marketing, and determining the prices of each product. Thank you to all the classes for their unique and creative ideas. It was such an excellent way to finish the term. We have also ended the term with some trips to Perth Zoo. We participated in some activities at the zoo activity centre and had free time to explore and see the animals. We have learned about conservation and biodiversity on different continents. A huge thank you to the Bush Ranger committee for funding these activities. We all had a great time. As the semester draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students, parents, and carers for a fantastic start to the year. We would also like to thank our team in ESC14, Ms Banks, Mrs Maunder, Mrs Mac, Mrs Putland, and Mrs Morgan. We couldn’t have had such an incredible semester without your help and support. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday break, and we look forward to seeing everyone in semester two.
The first semester has flown by. It has been an awesome year so far, and all the members of ESC15 have put in great effort to make it a fun, positive learning environment.
We had our Pop-Up Shop event which was a huge success. Everyone worked very hard to produce quality products to sell. We made popcorn, playdough, toasties, and tote bags, and Janelle offered hair braiding. It was a great day!
The class has been involved in a Push Up Challenge. All the students have jumped on board and enthusiastically participated daily to meet our goals. We have gotten creative, including sit-ups, squats, lunges, triceps dips, step-ups, and punches, keeping all muscle groups fit. For a great cause!
We have ended this term with trips to the Perth Zoo. It has been awesome to see the students gain autonomy with their use of public transport and enjoy taking the ferry. The students have learnt about different animals and the zoo's conservation efforts.
Finally, I want to thank all the students and our fantastic ESC 15 team, Mrs Tan, Mrs Lu, Ms Temple and Ms Sherlock.
See you all next semester!
ESC16 has had an awesome second term this year, filled with lots of fun and laughter, hard work, teamwork and respect.
We have created our car washing service as part of our business enterprise. I have been very impressed with the creativity shown by the students in creating advertisement posters, a catchy jingle, and an advertisement video, which we have used to promote our business to all the staff at Leeming ESC. We had a lot of fun washing our customers' cars, offering either a standard clean of the outside of the cars or a Scotty Special, where we also vacuum and wipe the inside. It’s such a great feeling for the staff of ESC16 to see the students participate in all aspects of the enterprise and demonstrate fantastic teamwork to deliver outstanding service. On the Pop-Up Shop Day, we created a stall where we sold car air fresheners and Loom Bands which were handmade by the students.
To conclude the term and celebrate the hard work we put in throughout the first semester, we visited Zone Bowling and the other Year 9 classes to partake in some friendly competition and enjoy each other’s company.
Mr Calasse and ESC16
Students worked very hard preparing their decoupage jars and then practised role-play selling them, preparing themselves for pop-up shops. The students participated in casting a vote using a ballot paper. They chose a charity by voting, and the first choice was Ronald McDonald House – Children’s Charity. Students have been learning about Aboriginal heritage and culture, participating in Reconciliation Week activities, and learning about the importance of Acknowledgment of the country.
In numeracy, students practise money skills, counting money, calculating the amount, giving back change for items bought, and setting the price for items for sale at the shops. They made posters with the prices for selling their jars and unanimously chose the title ‘Reach for the jars’. In Literacy, students have been participating in creating exciting stories using some cues provided. Fridays have been fun, as have participating in Rainbow Day and Pyjama Day. Students are looking forward to some fun activities planned by Ms Heard to mark the end of this term. Students have worked well as a team and showed self-responsibility, achievement, respect, and unity towards all learning areas. They have matured and demonstrated great resilience. As a result, they have all earned a reward excursion to Zone Bowling! Keep up the great work, Thomas, Enoch, Kevan, Sarah, Ruby E, Cameron, Jaylene, Jade, and Ruby R.! The Pop-Up Shop was a great success; we made $259.50. We are donating half the funds raised to Ronald McDonald House Charities to support families of children who are sick with accommodation. Thank you to my excellent team, Ms V, Ms Coles, Mrs C, and Ms Farmer. ESC 17 staff and students will miss Ms Coles as she will be undertaking her teacher practicals next term and then be eligible to teach in Term 4. We wish her all the best for her new role.

Soccer Carnival
On Wednesday, May 23rd, selected students from Leeming ESC competed in the annual Kalability Soccer Carnival. We took two teams, who played soccer games against other ESC schools. Congratulations to all the students who were involved. It was a fantastic day, and I am so proud of everyone's sportsmanship, soccer skills, and good behaviour. A special mention to the staff members who attended for the day- Ms Pereira, Ms Thompson, Mrs Brayne, and Mrs Broadhurst. Thank you for all of your efforts.
The next Kalability carnival will be AFL, in term 3.
The Push-up Challenge
During the month of June, Leeming ESC staff and students, have been participating in The Push-Up Challenge. The aim of this challenge is to support the health of our staff and students, raise mental health awareness, and contribute to interventions and prevention for depression, anxiety, and suicide. Each class in our centre represents a team, and each team has been completing the daily Push-Up target. A total of 3, 249 push-ups (or exercises) will be completed by June 28!
It has been amazing to see classes trying new exercises and coming up with alternate ways to complete push-ups. Leeming SHS ESC is the first Education Support Centre in Australia to participate in the challenge. The Push-Up Challenge Org has been very impressed with our efforts and is working with us to assist in supporting their program by enhancing it to be more accessible for people with disabilities.
On the last day of the challenge (Friday, 28th July), all teams will complete the last lot of push-ups together on the oval. Representatives from The Push-Up Challenge will attend this to congratulate Leeming ESC on our efforts!
Thank you to all staff and students who have taken on this challenge and encouraged each other to be involved! If you would like to donate, please follow the link:

See below for an article written by Perth now, on our amazing students at Leeming!
This term senior students have represented themselves with such high standards in the community, developing many valuable work capability skills across all industry settings. Well done to each and every student for working towards individualised meaningful work goals. Some achievements have included following instructions, implementing safe practices and manual handling, effective communication, and learning to work collaboratively as part of the workplace team. Awesome efforts by all!
A special welcome to Year 11 student Jessica Hornhardt who commenced the workplace learning program in the retail industry at a pharmacy this semester. She worked to the best of her ability, sharing her bubbly and social personality each week. Keep up this excellent work Jessica!
It was a pleasure to announce Rohan the workplace Employee of the Month. Rohan was congratulated for becoming an independent student in the children’s services industry this semester. His work team was super impressed with the creative games he developed throughout the placement. The children of the Kindy Room thoroughly enjoyed his enthusiastic demeanour, and the staff acknowledged his positive impact on the room. Rohan should be so proud of such fantastic achievements!
On Ethan’s final day of placement with the City of Melville in his administration position, the team celebrated his efforts with a special morning tea and were very enthused for him to present his final Kahoot Quiz. Each week Ethan has expressed this has been his very favourite task. He has been researching the business website and council information to provide valuable facts to the team.
We wish all families a lovely break!

Please remember that the workplace learning program commences on Wednesday, July 17. This a friendly reminder to top up smart riders and prepare attire for term 3 placements!
Our young artists have just completed an exciting unit on Australian animal landscapes. The students learned about the unique wildlife found in Australia like kangaroos, koalas, and kookaburras. They studied how to render these animals realistically while depicting them in their natural habitats using proper scale and perspective.
Over the past few weeks, our students have taken a walking field trip to the local skate park and viewed and learned about the new street art murals that have recently been created there. A professional street artist worked with local youth to design and paint these vibrant murals on the skate park walls. These skate park murals are an excellent example of community street art. We are using this experience to create their own artworks.
