- UPCOMING EVENTS
Throughout this term, we will celebrate culture and community through a range of engaging community events with our partner school, Leeming SHS. These events are always a highlight and showcase the vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive community we strive to achieve between our two schools.
The first of these events is on Thursday 23rd May, a whole school Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC Culture and Community assembly, emphasising inclusivity.
For the past five years, Leeming SHS ESC has celebrated "New Beginnings to an Old Story." This year, on Friday, June 7th, we will acknowledge and learn more about the past, present, and future knowledge of First Nations people. Various organisations, including Bilya Booladarlung, Indigenous Tours, Djirrily Dreaming, and the Stephen Michael Foundation, will engage our students in activities exploring Aboriginal history and culture. I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Vann, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Palmer for their efforts in organising this enriching event.
Then, mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 18th, when Leeming SHS ESC invites you to our Annual Pop-Up Shops. This community event features students selling an array of creative products crafted as part of their class Business Enterprise. Students from local primary schools will join us, enhancing the lively atmosphere. Each year, the quality and variety of products surpass expectations, making this event a standout with its energy, excitement, and community engagement.
The school term will culminate with an Expo on June 25th, welcoming all families. This event will provide an avenue for families to delve into discussions on employment, leisure and recreation, therapy, and NDIS Partners in the Community. The Expo consistently proves to be an informative community event, and we are looking forward to families attending. Thank you to Ms FP and Mrs Barbato for organising this important community event.
On Monday, April 29th, the School Board convened, with the student presentations shining as the meeting's highlight. Jessica Hornhardt delivered an uplifting address on her enrolment in the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Certificate II in Community Health and Wellbeing course this year. Jessica shared her passion for fishing, being a world record holder in game fishing in 2020 and how the AMA course has ignited her aspiration to pursue a career in nursing.
Our student leaders showcased the array of leadership avenues available at Leeming SHS ESC, describing their respective roles and responsibilities within the school community. Students also
shared their experience with the voting process they learned from the Australian Electoral Commission, which was used during their elections for leadership roles.
The leadership roles include:
Class Leaders
House Leaders
Student Councillors
I am delighted to announce to our school community that we will welcome a new Chaplain starting on May 28th. Simon Fenby will be joining us every Tuesday at Leeming SHS ESC. The Chaplain role will focus on providing support for the pastoral care and well-being of our students. We look forward to having Simon as a valuable addition to our Student Services Team.

The PBS Team.
Ina Dorsheimer, Lachie Frewer, Keran Davies, Emma Gage, Tom Bakowski, Prudence Harcourt, Deb Brayne and Della Chamberlain.
ESC8 has seen a great start to term 2 with many more fun and exciting learning and events coming our way. In week two we learned about ANZAC Day and the importance of the special day. We were excited to hear about the ANZAC Day poster competition initiated by ESSC11 and all worked together to create a display for our classroom window to commemorate ANZAC Day. We read ANZAC Ted by Belinda Landsberry and completed a directed drawing of our very own ANZAC Teds and made poppies using tissue paper, pipe cleaners and pom poms.
In week 3 we welcomed Mrs M to our classroom, who is completing a 5-week practicum in ESC8. Mrs M has been teaching us about our skills and qualities in PCP and the Australian flags in Bush Rangers. We have continued our learning on Chemical Sciences and Geography in Science and HASS with Mrs M as well.
We are looking forward to the annual ESC Pop-Up Shops in week 10 this term. Stay tuned for our enterprise…
Miss Gage.

ESC7 has had a great start to Term 2, and the staff want to express our heartfelt appreciation to all our students for settling into the new term with such enthusiasm and dedication and showcasing our USTAR values both in the classroom and throughout the school. During the past weeks, our classroom has been buzzing with creativity and innovation as we embarked on an exciting journey to brainstorm ideas for our upcoming business enterprise, scheduled for Week 10. After much deliberation, we're thrilled to announce that our class has decided to venture into the world of crafting, focusing on the production of unique candles and candle holders. We've also been busy channeling our artistic talents towards a meaningful cause by creating stunning ANZAC day posters for the school's ANZAC poster competition. It was wonderful to see the class come together, infusing creativity and respect into each design. We're incredibly proud of our students' efforts and the beautiful tributes they've crafted. In numeracy, the learning journey continues to be both engaging and exciting as we delve into the fascinating concept of money. Using play money, we're exploring real-world scenarios and mastering essential skills through interactive shopping experiences.
Looking forward to all the fun experiences for the rest of the term!!
As they always do, this term is rushing ahead at a crazy pace!
The students are delving deep into the world of research and amazing me with their ever-improving Book Creator and Presentation skills.
ESC6 researched at Anzac Day in detail and created a class poster reflecting everything they learned. The students included not only poppies but demonstrated how animals such as horses and dogs represented Australia and helped war efforts. They even included the names of veterans. Our only regret was learning that purple poppies are the official symbol of service animals, after we had completed our poster that morning!
We are incorporating ASDAN into our Health and Bush Ranger programs.
For Health so far, we have learnt how to treat cuts/grazes and burns/scalds. Students may be going home with various marker/highlighter fake burns, cuts and scars, covered in bandaids and bandages, all in the name of practising with a partner and learning how to deal with situations through realistic roleplays!
In Bush Rangers we are looking into local environment issues and discussing how these topics are being dealt with at local government and state levels. The students created incredibly in-depth research and presented their found information to the whole class.
The students put INCREDIBLE effort into their Mother’s Day presents, and we continue to prepare our range of goods for the Pop-Up Shop. We look forward to showcasing (and selling) all these goodies in a few weeks!

ESC 5 has hit the ground running this term, organising items to make for our annual pop-up shop in week 10. I am happy to announce that the ‘Mr Jacks’ pie shop will return. After the students surveyed the students and staff at school, it was decided that we would make apple, curry, and steak pies this year. As well as the pies, we have been busy making macaroon keyrings to sell on the day. There are many more events to look forward to this term, such as Rainbow Day, Pyjama Day, the push-up challenge, New Beginnings to an Old Story, and much more.
The progress and development of each student in ESC 5 has been significant throughout the year so far. Each student has been confidently sending emails, writing literacy stories, and working extremely hard to tell the time to the exact minute during math lessons. We have learned about rules and laws in HASS and created a heating device to turn solid chocolate into liquid chocolate in science. This activity was a fan favourite, for obvious reasons.
Thank you again to my support staff, Karlene Wynd, Sarah Russell, Georgia Hillas, and Sue Owen, for their continued support throughout the year.
I hope to see you all around the school in the coming weeks, including many events.
Thanks, Jack Drennan
We have had a great, busy start to term 2 here in ESC9. Students have been ready to learn and have a positive attitude towards their class programs.
We started the term by learning more about the ANZACs through the story of Simpson and the Donkey. Students wrote ANZAC letters outlining how they would feel if this were something they would have to experience. It was terrific to read letters of such empathy and respect. We also designed a beautiful ANZAC poster together, and the students focused on adding purple poppies to show our respect for the war animals that lost their lives during the war.
Our enterprise project for Pop-up shop day is in full swing and we have some very creative students and staff in ESC9. Our keyrings look great, and students have done an excellent job getting the mixture correct for the resin. Our fine motor skills have been tested by securing the keychains and attaching tassels.
We enjoyed designing keychains for our wonderful mums for Mother’s Day, using the initial of their first name, along with a handmade card and thoughtful messages. THANK YOU! Amazing mums.
We had our first CBL visit to Southlands Shopping Centre, where the focus this term is on Community places. The first community place we learned more about and visited was the Post Office, where we wrote letters and posted them to our classmate Pedro who relocated to Melbourne. We are excited to receive a letter back from Pedro!
During literacy this term we are learning about the story of Moondyne Joe, the convict Bushranger who escaped from Prison 5 times! We are excited to learn more about this story and visit Fremantle prison at the end of the term.
We have many things to work towards and look forward to throughout this semester!!
A great start to term 2, well done.
From all the staff in ESC 9.

ESC16 has had an awesome start to the term, continuing from where we left off last term. Both the students and the staff have been working hard to showcase excellence in everything we do, and we have had some amazing achievements to portray our hard work.
As part of our business enterprise this term, we have created our own car washing service. I have been very impressed with the creativity that has been shown by the students in creating advertisement posters, a catchy jingle and an advertisement video which we have used to promote our business to all the staff at Leeming ESC. We have already had a lot of fun washing the cars of our customers, offering either a standard clean of the outside of the cars or a Scotty Special, where we also vacuum and wipe the inside of the cars. It’s such a great feeling for the staff of ESC16 to see the students participate in all aspects of the enterprise and demonstrate fantastic teamwork to deliver an outstanding service.
We have also been fortunate to have multiple excursions throughout the term to assist the students in learning about Module 7 for Bush Rangers, which is about parks, reserves, and landscape management. The class has travelled to local parks in the Leeming area, as well as Kings Park and Piney Lakes, where they investigated the role of a Park Ranger in managing a park and/or reserve.
Although we have already had a very busy term, I cannot wait to discover what else our amazing group can accomplish this year!
Mr Calasse and ESC16

First term was short and sweet, concluding with Easter festivities, and we have commenced Term 2 with a Big Bang! We are nearly halfway through this 11-week term, and students have been busy planning their POP-UP Shop Enterprise and working on their recycling project.
In Bush Rangers, students have been learning about caring for parks and the local environment and looking at facilities in the parks available to the community. We visited Piney Lakes and Kings Park with their Year 9 cohort to identify Flora and Fauna, facilities, and Aboriginal Heritage.
HASS lessons have been learning about the role of Local Government and the facilities the Council provides to its community members. Science lessons have been around sources of water and water conservation. During Protective behaviours students have been learning about Puberty and Hygiene, taking care of health by exercising, planning a a healthy diet to maintain good physical and mental health during puberty.
All students have been working towards developing Self-responsibility by listening and following instructions, accepting the consequences of their behavior, working as a team, showing respect and care towards each other, and trying their best to keep soaring high to achieve their goals. I am very proud of Jade, Jaylene, Cameron, Ruby R, Ruby E, Sarah, Enoch, Kevan, and Thomas for their continuous persistence in working to their best ability. I owe this to my excellent, hardworking team for encouraging the students to bring out the best in them.

ESC 11 - VICKY GIBSON/DAWN SUTHERLAND
ESC 11 has been enjoying a busy and fun-filled start to Term 2, with many exciting activities underway and more to come.
We commemorated ANZAC Day by making posters to symbolise and remember the significance of this special day, putting them all together to display outside our classroom. The students were delighted to learn they had won the ANZAC poster competition, and received a new book - ANZAC Ted – to add to their classroom library! Making delicious ANZAC biscuits during one of our weekly cooking lessons was a hit, and our students were able to show off their fantastic cooking skills and demonstrate how to use the oven safely.
Our community-based outings and experiences for CBL and Bush Rangers in our local shopping centres and parks have been the most exciting. We love exploring the places and spaces our community offers, and our students are gaining confidence in using public transport.
All of us in ESC 11 are looking forward to the annual ESC Pop-Up Shops enterprise event in Week 10, where we will showcase the fantastic products we have made and new skills we have gained! Please keep your eyes peeled for the hamper we will be raffling…
Mrs Sutherland, Mrs Gibson, and the ESC 11 team

In a vibrant learning environment, Year 10 students from ESC13 embrace a range of enriching activities that blend nature, business, and literacy.
During their Bush Ranger lessons, students have been nurturing sunflowers from seed to bloom, learning essential skills of patience and responsibility.
Beyond the classroom, they are undergoing practical Community-Based Learning (CBL) training at Gateway Shopping Centre, gaining hands-on experience in teamwork and life skills.
Weekly visits to the school library have sparked a passion for reading among the students, enhancing their comprehension and critical thinking abilities through borrowed books.
Excitement is building as the students prepare for a business enterprise project, culminating in a Pop-Up Shop in Week 8. They are developing innovative products and marketing strategies, honing their entrepreneurial skills under the guidance of teachers.
These experiences equip students with practical knowledge, and foster personal growth. As sunflowers bloom and business ideas develop, ESC13 students exemplify the power of experiential learning in nurturing young minds.
Warm regards,
ESC13 Teaching Staff: Tom Bakowski, Deb Brayne, Tiana Lomax, Sooi Chay & Terry Joannides
ESC 4 - LORRAINE VANN/ELLANOR LIETZOW
ESC 4 would like to warmly welcome educator Michelle Smith to the team for term two to replace Mrs. Blacklock while she is on long service leave. Ms Smith will share her expertise with the class before heading north in term three to complete her final teaching practicum. Wanjoo, Mrs. Smith!
The students are familiar with the daily routines and applying technology tools to enhance their learning and independence. They work together and support each other, which is lovely to see.
At Bush Rangers, our focus is on bushcraft and survival skills. The students travelled to Yanchep National Park, engaged in an Aboriginal Experience excursion, and completed a massive 2.7km hike around the wetland. We were amazed and incredibly proud of the students for displaying an enthusiastic and positive attitude, showing all five of the school's values: Unity, Self-responsibility, Teamwork, Achievements, and Respect!
For CBL, the students travel by public transport to Fremantle. The students are focused on reading Transperth timetables and road maps to locate places and information. They are transitioning around Fremantle to discover landmarks, facilities, and stores to recognise recreational spaces, social areas, and various activities. The students will research where they want to go in Fremantle for the end-of-term reward.
This term, students will continue with their work experience at Strikers Sports and Fitness Centre to develop their skills as a part of ASDAN Workright modules: Working with Others and You at Work. Our E-Safety Modules teach us about Safer Gaming and differentiating between texting and sexting.
We are busy working on our products for the Pop-Up Shop and hope families can come to the event on the 18th of June.
A huge thank you to all families for their interactions on Seesaw. Students enjoy viewing your comments. A thank you also to our dedicated team for being the best team a class could be lucky to work with!
Thank you!
Warm wishes, Lorraine Vann, Ellanore Lietzow, Prue Harcourt, Lisa Palma, and Michelle Smith.

In HASS, the class learned about the ANZAC history, we designed posters commemorating the ANZACs and displayed them in our classroom.
During Physical Education, we have been practising our basketball and soccer skills, in preparation for the soccer tournament at the end of the term. We will be primed and ready to go!
We have been discussing choices and consequences in English, analysing both good and bad decisions and predicting accurate consequences. We are creating role plays to present to the class where good and poor choices can lead us in different situations.
In Maths, we studied the concept of time and measurement. We read clocks and created timetables based on daily activities. We measured each other’s heights and other objects throughout the room. Everyone in the class found many objects they could use as measuring tools.
ESC15 has used its maths skills by reviewing the prices of items purchased for our upcoming pop-up shop. Students also had a chance to demonstrate some artistic flair as they created posters to advertise our shop.
During CBL, we visited the Art Gallery of WA. Students used water to create nature artworks on special fabric and made weather patterns with felt pieces, using the floor as a canvas! We all had a great time.
ESC17 Staff

ESC 14 - LACHIE FREWER/TAMMY MEGRAIL
With the school market day fast approaching, students commenced planning the class enterprise called “Kinetic Creations.” We have researched different ways to create kinetic sand and tried several different recipes to find the one we like best. We have created shopping lists of items to purchase while out on CBL and created a budget for making our product. Using this, we have determined an appropriate price for our product to make sure we earn a profit. We have also used the skills we have learned in our Mathematics Preliminary unit to use the correct measurements while following the recipe. We have also experimented with creating fruit leather as another enterprise. We are using several different types of fruit to create the products we like the most. It has been a fantastic learning experience and we are really excited to share our products with everyone at the school market day.
All students in ESC2 have started the term with a bang. They have been amazing and have hit the ground running. We have been busy planning and organising our ‘Dream Catcher’ business with the Pop-up Shop soon approaching. Each student has been allocated roles within the business, designs have been created, all stock has been ordered and purchased, and the production line is in full swing. It has been great to witness all students take on their roles with such passion; the sense of teamwork within the classroom is admirable.
We have been creative in the kitchen every Friday for Independent Living, focusing on cooking with a Pie Maker. The students have been and will continue to explore the variety of recipes you can cook using this simple machine. Students enjoyed trying the variety of recipes that can be made in a pie maker.
Jyrah: “I liked cooking the Epic Breakfast muffins, they were tasty”.
Nic: “I like cooking with the pie maker because it is quick and easy. The scones were yummy!”
Sebastian: “I helped mix the ingredients and place it in the pie maker, the scones were my favourite”.
Fatima: “I really liked making the scones with the pie maker”
We have been focussing on money this term in Numeracy with the task of planning for a party. Students have been allocated a budget to cater for this event. They have made some interesting choices with their food and drink selection and have put forward some great ideas for party games. I’m pretty sure with all their ideas combined; we could have a fantastic class party…… remaining within the budget could be questionable.
As the temperature slightly changes, I have loved seeing all students wear their Year 12 Leavers Jackets. It has generated much more talk about this being their final year and the plans for 2025!
ESC 1 have been hard at work this term, completing maths and literacy units, and getting ready for our pop-up shop day. Our class has been working hard creating stock for our enterprise. PHYS ED - MISS HEARD & MS PEREIRA
Welcome to Term 2! It is a very exciting term in the Health and Physical Education Department. In sports classes, students have been learning new skills in Basketball, AFL, and Netball. Our House Captains have fulfilled their first duties, including attending leadership meetings, assisting with equipment supervision, and being fantastic role models within their classes!
The Push-Up Challenge
During June, Leeming ESC staff and students are participating in the Push Up Challenge. Together, we’re going to smash out a huge number of push-ups and impact mental health. In our teams (each classroom is a team) we will complete 3,249 push-ups (or alternative exercises) over 24 days, representing the 3,249 lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2022. In conjunction with the challenge, staff will educate students about the importance of mental health. Students have been training during PE classes, practising their push-ups and identifying exercises to suit all needs!
With weekly prizes, shoutouts and winners, some friendly fire is already floating around the Leeming ESC Community! I want to thank Jason and Vanessa from the Push Up Organisation, who came to our school assembly and presented to our staff and students. We are looking forward to starting the challenge on June 5th!
Upcoming events-
Soccer carnival- Wednesday week 6 (selected students)
Leeming ESC Soccer tournament- Friday week 11

In Art classes, our talented students have just completed an exciting paper mâché project creating whimsical animal-shaped vessels. Over the past few weeks, they applied layers of papier mâché to form the bodies of various creatures. The results were delightfully creative! We had elephants, giraffes, koalas, and even a few tigers. Once the papier mâché dried, students painted their animal vessels with bright colours and intricate patterns. Some opted for realistic looks, while others went for more fanciful designs. The students' unique vessels are made for charming decorations and can also serve functional purposes like holding flowers, pencils, or other small items. The students should be very proud of their handcrafted artwork!

The group is administered by the parent representatives on the LESC Board. The Facebook group can be found at the link below; where you can request to join. For more information, contact Bernadette McCarthy by email at bmmcleod@bigpond.comat
