- MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR
This is our last newsletter for the 2023 school year, I would like to thank all parents for their ongoing support. To the parents of our 2023 leavers, it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know you all. The graduation dinner was a memorable night and a great way for students, parents and staff to say goodbye. Thank you to the staff involved in organising such a wonderful night of celebration. I wish all the students and their families the very best for the future.
On behalf of the School Board, I wish to formally acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Bernadette McCarthy, Raylene Natoli, and Rebecca Joyce during their tenure as parent representatives. Their commitment to providing a parental perspective has greatly supported the needs of both students and the school, and we are grateful for their dedication.
A special recognition goes out to Joss Morgan, who served as Board Chair and parent representative for an impressive four years. Joss, your ongoing support and dedication to Leeming SHS ESC have not gone unnoticed. Your proactive approach and unwavering commitment to realising our strategic goals, as well as supporting our families, have been highly appreciated and we express our appreciation for your significant contributions.
Furthermore, the Board recently conducted a process to elect new members, and we welcome Lydia Jiang, Sheila Koh and Madeline Kudzai Manhanzva as our new parent representatives. Their experience and knowledge will undoubtedly enrich our Board, and we look forward to the positive impact they will make in the coming year. We extend a warm welcome to Olivia Sjahrir, who will assume the role of Board Chair starting in 2024. I look forward to working with Olivia and collaborating with the entire School Board in the upcoming year.
On behalf of the Leeming SHS ESC community, we extend our heartfelt wishes to the following staff members; Emily Muco, Amber Blackburn, Dylan Geiles, Steffi Varghese, and Brett Limpus as they embark on their new positions in 2024. We hope your endeavours and new roles are met with great success and fulfilment.
Reports have been sent home this week and I hope you take the time to celebrate the achievements of your children. They have all worked hard to achieve to the best of their ability and every success no matter how big or small is important.
The 2023 Yearbook has also been distributed to students who have fulfilled payment as part of their school fees. I have enjoyed reading about the favourite activities or programs in 2023, it was interesting to read so many varied achievements and highlights. There have been many special moments enjoyed throughout 2023 and as we reflect on the past year and look ahead to 2024, I am filled with gratitude for the collective efforts that make Leeming SHS ESC the exceptional community it is.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the dedication of my staff. Their efforts to deliver the best learning opportunities for our students have led to remarkable achievements in collaboration with their students throughout 2023.
Have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday.
Goodbye!
Our final board meeting for 2023 was excellent! We covered a range of updates including the first Leeming ESC Alumni event which was a wonderful success; so many faces happy to see each other, so many good conversations, laughs, and warmth. A much-needed community-building initiative. Please join, and I hope to see you at our next event.
The really special part of our meeting though, was getting to watch a small part of the Leeming ESC’s Got Talent. I am mindful of this privilege, as it is an event only watched by students and teachers. Leeming ESC has SO much talent. The Values of USTAR (Unity, Self-responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement, and Respect) were so evident at this moment. Young people feeling safe to take risks in front of their peers and young people being encouraging, responsible spectators is surely what we want for our world. If instead of academic achievement if students and schools were tested on their kindness, bravery, tolerance, humility, ethics, and compassion, Leeming ESC and its students would top the rankings. The world would be better for it.
I am sad to be saying goodbye to Leeming ESC as I step down from the Board. The gratitude I feel as a former parent and in being able to have contributed is immense. The Board is also saying goodbye to Bernadette McCarthy, Raelene Natoli, and Rebecca Joyce, who have offered valuable input and insights during their time on the board. I am handing the baton of the Chair over to the wonderful Olivia Sjahrir. The Board is very grateful that Olivia was willing to step into this position, and she will do very well as Chair. It was heartening to learn we also have several excellent candidates for Parent Representative Board Members for 2024.
If you find yourself down in Denmark, please look us up or hopefully, we will see each other at an Alumni event. I wish you all a very safe and happy summer holiday. May your 2024, be calm and healthy.
Many thanks
Joss Morgan
On Tuesday, 14th November, our Year 12 students enjoyed their final excursion for 2023. They were lucky enough to visit Rottnest Island for a day trip, where they enjoyed some swimming at the Basin and went on a bus ride around the island.

This term we have continued the explicit teaching of expected behaviours through our weekly PBS lessons. The last 5 weeks of the term focused on:
Teamwork: Assist and Guide Others Respect: Be Kind to Ourselves and Others Unity: Voice your Ideas Respectfullly |
Here are the current student and staff USTAR winners, announced at our week 10 ESC assembly:
Gurman Singh and Ari Zegarac

Heather Musson
ESC1 went through a couple of changes this term, we said goodbye to Ms Knox in week 4 as she went on maternity leave, to wait for the impending birth of her twin boys. We welcomed Mrs Mahalingam and the delicious food she cooks for us and Mr Morgan who has been teaching us about automotives and how to care for our future cars. D&T classes, we have been learning about the different tools and machinery and also creating something special for our families for Christmas. Our highlight of the term was going on a day trip to Rottnest Island.
We had a fantastic day, walking to the lighthouse and we then went to Thompsons Bay for a swim, finished off with a round of mini golf and lunch in the town centre, surrounded by a very inquisitive Quokka. We are all really looking forward to our holidays.
From all the staff in ESC 1
This term, the Year 10 students took part in several learning activities in Mathematics. These included addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers, as well as money skills involving the calculation of change. Students used their time skills to plan their journey to Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre using the Transperth journey planner. These activities were reinforced with authentic learning opportunities through our Community-Based Learning program. Students undertook price comparisons of similar items at different supermarkets to maximise their savings. Another area of mathematics studied by the students this term was basic Arithmetic Progression.
Independent reading and writing were among our focus areas in English this term. The highlight for our writing was the opportunity for students to employ the “writing checklist” learning approach to include more descriptive language and punctuation in their construction of sentences. This strategy has given them more flexibility in their use of spelling and editing to make their sentences more interesting and meaningful. Through their use of the “Writing Checklist” strategy, students have been able to develop their skills in sentence construction further and by so doing enhanced their capacity to undertake creative writing.
The social skills program and instruction for this term revolve around our whole-school Positive Behaviours Support initiative. It is targeted at teaching ‘Unity’, ‘Self-Responsibility’, ‘Teamwork’, ‘Achievement’, and ‘Respect’ to students (commonly abbreviated to USTAR values). A wide range of instructional approaches including brainstorming, role-playing, and research skills have been utilised to inculcate these values in them. A considerable amount of instructional effort and time has also been expended in teaching the application of these values in students’ day-to-day living.
Mrs Enoma
The last five weeks have been very productive as students complete their ASDAN modules for the year. Students have also been learning about Dreamtime Stories, Probability, and Chance and fine-tuning their CBL skills of identifying landmarks in Fremantle.
Students in ESC 3 have made huge progress in their first year of senior school. Over the year, I have watched them develop greater resilience and confidence in handling challenges that come their way. I am so proud of how far they have come and look forward to seeing them develop greater independence as they transition to Year 11. Here are thoughts from our students about all the things they like and what they look forward to next year.

It is hard to believe that we are already writing the last Newsletter article for 2023. What an amazing Year 10 class! We can’t believe how quickly the year has gone, and how much we’ve achieved together.
Term 4 has kept us extremely busy with work placements and fun events including excursions to Leeming Parks, Bibra Lake Regional Reserve, and Yanchep National Park to investigate threatened species, environmental management, and conservation projects. Students assessed the park values, distinguishing between recreation and conservation. The students applied their learning to design a park of their own.
Enterprise has been a big focus with students working hard and developing many new skills around micro-enterprises, budgets, and teamwork. The students successfully sold the last of their products at the ESSN Market Day held at Cannington Community College with their profits going towards a long-neck snake turtle rescue carrier.
The Year 10s enjoyed a Mindflight7 virtual reality incursion that focused on a growth mindset to see and explore future career pathways. The students were thoroughly engaged and enjoyed the fun and interactive technology experience.
This year's direction has been on building knowledge and skills around future work possibilities. The highlight has been observing the students learn about themselves as they explored their interests, and strengths and considered future employment possibilities. Observing student’s confidence grow as they transitioned their learning and skills into a work environment has been very rewarding.

It has been our pleasure to work with these incredible students. A huge congratulations! You are all USTARS for demonstrating Unity, Self-Responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement, and Respect. You all should be very proud of your achievements. We wish you success and happiness in your future years.
To the families, you have been amazing to work with and your support has been heartwarming. We wish you all a safe and restful holiday.
I have been blessed to work with a phenomenal team and it is their kindness, hard work, and dedication that creates an optimal learning environment for everyone to happily thrive. From all our hearts, THANK YOU, Mrs Blacklock, Ms Palma, and Miss Coles.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” (Dr Suess).
Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2024.
That’s a wrap for 2023! What a wonderful year it has been. It’s been so amazing to teach and get to know all of the students in ESC5. Each student has come such a long way from the start of the year. They have developed, grown, and worked hard for themselves and each other this year, and this is demonstrated in the work that they have produced.
In the second half of term four, we started to get into the Christmas spirit and started decorating the back wall with Christmas decorations and miniature elves with the student's faces on them. The boys loved making them. In maths this term we have been focusing on capacity and how we measure capacity and then we have moved on to look at chance and data. For that, we collected data on the colour of different cars as they drove past us on the oval by marking our tally charts.
I would like to give a big thank you to all the EAs who have helped support not only the students in the class but also me this year. I know I couldn’t have gotten through this year without your help. So, thank you, Ms Louise, Mr. Kosc, Mr. El Chami, and Mrs. Bruns for all the hard work and support you have given to the class this year.
Lastly, I would like to say thank you and goodbye to all the students, parents, and staff. I have had a fantastic year here at Leeming SHS ESC but look forward to a new challenge at my new school next year. I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday.
Brett Limpus
Term 4 has flown by in ESC 6! We have had an exciting end to the year with the highlight being Leeming’s Got Talent in Week 8. Our students shone, presenting acts including artwork, magic tricks, singing, and dancing. It was wonderful to see the confidence and self-belief of students and the encouragement they showed their peers. Well done to all the performers. We have also enjoyed preparing for the ESSN Market day, and attending this to sell our creations. It was a great experience to see the variety of produce made by different education support centres, and there was a fantastic vibe on the day, seeing the pride the students had in their work. Our Christmas Cards were a hit!
Our USTAR achievers this year:
Jaylene, you have shown fantastic progress in your self-responsibility. You deliver messages around the school, help other students, independently organise your belongings and build your skills in making safe choices. Well done!

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that this year will be my last at Leeming ESC – at least for the time being! I have taken on a new position for 2024. I will miss everyone here but am excited for this new opportunity. I look forward to working with students, parents, and teachers to support a smooth and successful transition for our students into year 9. I would like to express my gratitude for the amazing class I’ve had this year, and all of the parents, therapists, and support staff that have worked together to create such a positive atmosphere.
Miss Blackburn
Just like that it’s the end of term 4! What an amazing journey it has been as our students have completed their first year of high school.
We have had a busy end to the year, wrapping up our learning programs and practising for our annual Leeming’s Got Talent in Week 9! The students worked so hard to memorise the signs and lyrics, as well as choreograph a few dance moves too. It is wonderful to see our students expand their modes of communication, as many of our students have learned simple phrases of AUSLAN and use them in the classroom to communicate their needs. The performance was excellent – and without being biased, I think we stole the show on the day!! Well done everyone!
I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate each of our students on how much they have matured, transitioned into new routines, and made countless new friendships that will last a lifetime. To Evan, Indigo, Isabella, Alisha, Conna, Kobe, Eva, Blake, and Ebony, congratulations on completing year 7. Myself and the EAs are so incredibly proud of you all. I feel honored to have taught such a wonderful group of students with an accepting, caring, and fun classroom community. I look forward to cheering you on around the school next year and seeing more of your amazing achievements. To my EAs, Mrs Maunder, Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. Wood-Smith, and Miss Hillas, thank you for all that you do in the classroom to support me and our students. It takes a team to run a classroom and we were very lucky to have such a wonderful one this year!
To all of the families, I wish you all a safe and restful holiday. You have all been amazing to work with and your flexibility has been incredible. Merry Christmas and Happy 2024!
Sophie Bartlett.
What an amazing year we have had together in ESC 8 and such a special one, welcoming new students to Leeming and watching them grow. It is crazy to think back to term 1 where everyone was settling in and getting to know each other. Now by term 4, we have all made such great progress and strong friendships. Each student has made such a great impact on their first year of high school and each brings their unique strengths and qualities to our classroom.
Some of the highlights we shared this year, were our annual pop-up shops, ESSN carnival, and sports day where all students had an absolute blast! We finished our year off with our camp to Point Peron, this was the absolute highlight of our year together. All students took away something valuable that they learned and have fun memories that will last a lifetime.
Term 4 has seen us work hard to finish off all our in-class programs and spend so much time perfecting our Auslan dance to the popular Greatest Showman track ‘This is Me’ at Leeming’s Got Talent. Our students performed their numbers with such confidence and are now so keen to learn more about Auslan, which is super!
Myself, Mrs. Musson, Mrs. Carter, and Mrs Brewer are all just so proud of the fantastic things you have learned and achieved this year. We are so excited to watch the amazing things you will all do moving forward into year 8! We can’t thank you students in ESC 8 enough for being so fabulous and making this year so enjoyable!

Merry Christmas to all! We hope that your summer holidays are safe, happy, and most of all so much fun! Thanks again for letting us work with your beautiful children, we have learned so much from them.
Christmas wishes from the team of ESC8.
As term 4 comes to an end, we start to wind down and reflect on all of the achievements we have made individually, and the memories we have created together in 2023. We have started to get into the Christmas spirit by putting up and decorated our class Christmas tree as a team, including the naughty or nice bauble which is always watching us! The bauble has stayed green so far, so we know we must be impressing our teachers (and you know who in the North Pole) with our mature, responsible, and positive behaviours.
We are starting to wrap up our term 4 programs. This term in Health and Protective Behaviours we have learned about puberty and the changes that may happen to our body and how to take care of our changing bodies. In HASS we have learned about natural, constructed, and managed features in environments and how environments can change over time due to natural or human impact. In Maths, we have been learning about fractions and telling the time in 5-minute intervals. We have also concluded our CBL program at Cockburn Gateways shopping centre. This has been a highlight for ESC9 and it has been wonderful to see all students demonstrating independence when accessing the community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my WONDERFUL year 8.3 class Connor, Isla, Chris, Anisha, Dkhan, Cameron, Kelly, Halo, and Hanna. I have had an amazing year working with you all, and have loved being your teacher. I am so proud of all of your achievements, and of the young adults you are growing into. I can’t wait to watch you continue your journey at Leeming. Thank you to the ESC9 parents/carers for your support and kindness, and a HUGE thank you to my Education Assistants Mrs. Hales, Mrs. Harcourt, Ms L, and Miss Chatfield. I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful Monday/Tuesday teacher, Mrs Sunil, for all of her hard work and dedication.
Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday break. See you all in 2024!
Miss Gage.
Hello!
What a year! It feels like the time has flown by and it is time to say goodbye to my wonderful ESC 10 class…. Only for the holiday period as I am very excited to have the same group of students in 2024.
We have had so much fun in ESC 10 this year and I am truly grateful to have shared the year with my wonderful team of Kristy Hewer, Sarah Russell, and Karlene Wynd, you guys have been a massive support and I couldn’t have done it without you. Every student, Bronwyn, Sabrina, Isabel, Elvin, Tommy, Mira, Katelyn, and Austin, have developed so much throughout 2023 and they should all be very proud of their achievements. I am lucky to have played a small part in the start of their high school journey so far.
To all of the families, I wish you all a safe and restful holiday. You have all been amazing to work with and your support has been incredible. Merry Christmas!
Thank you!
Jack Drennan
Just like that the entire year has passed and we are left to reflect on the awesome year everyone in ESC11 has had. There have been many challenges along the way, but I am truly proud of all eight of the boys and all three of my amazing EAs who have persevered through the year and excelled. Each of them has demonstrated courage, strength, kindness, teamwork, reliability, enthusiasm, and respect which they should all be commended for.
During the second half of this term, we completed our space buggies which we created using recycled materials from home. We then raced them down a slope to test the effectiveness of their designs and each was given a score out of 10 on their rolling and overall design. This term we also had our Year 9 Camp in which we stayed in Dwellingup for two nights. The camp was an amazing experience and it was very pleasing to see all the students and staff embrace each other and have a wonderful time, while also learning about the native flora and fauna in the area.
Mr Calasse and Team ESC11.
What an amazing journey ESC 12 students and staff have had this year, knowing, and understanding each other. Staff and students have built positive relationships with each other and demonstrating USTAR values throughout the year. Students worked with Miss FP to get working on their My Plans identifying their skills and qualities, likes and dislikes which will assist them in identifying jobs they could do in senior school. The students participated in CBL to Cockburn Gateways and an excursion to AQWA. My little helpers helped me pack up the class, moved boxes, and cleaned up their desks and drawers making the classroom ready for the next group of Year 9s. The ‘family open day’ interactive session was the highlight of this term, as we had the maximum attendance. My team and I would like to thank all the parents and carers for supporting us throughout the year to ensure we can provide the best learning environment for your child.
A shout out to my awesome EAs Mrs Banks, Ms Pan, Mrs Drinan, and Ms Dale for making this year a success. I would like to wish all families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
ESC 13 - VICKY CHAMBERS & KATE BALL
The school year has come to an end, and it has been an amazing year! We welcomed two new teachers, Ms Chambers and Ms Ball, and the students have done a great job this term. It was a pleasure to share the last term with everyone, getting to know each other, and seeing how hard-working everyone is.
We had an end-of-year school trip, and it was fantastic! All the year 11 students went to Rottnest Island, where they enjoyed swimming and playing in the cool, calm water before playing mini-golf with their friends. The bumpy ride back was an adventure for some of the students, who exclaimed, ‘It was like being on a roller coaster.’ However, some of our staff members were slightly seasick and did not share the same enthusiasm.

The class has been working hard to finish all their year projects, including ASDAN, P-Units, Bush Rangers, and CBL. In Literacy, we have been learning about road laws and safe driving. In Keys4Life, a couple of our students passed their theory driving test, which is a massive achievement they should be proud of. In Workplace Learning, our students have been working at their placements and are excited to start their new placements next year. I wish all the students the best of luck in their final year at Leeming SHS ESC next year as year 12s! They have many exciting things to look forward to, including the ball, leavers' jackets, and graduation.
We, the team in ESC 13, wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
What a wonderful year it has been in ESC 15, home to a fantastic group of young people who have made every day special. Between the group, there have been countless accomplishments. All students have completed Preliminary English and Mathematics Units 1 and 2 and ASDAN Towards Independence modules. We have continued our learning in Bush Rangers and Protective Behaviours. Students made choices about their subjects of interest and engaged with the Art, Music, and D&T electives. We have had students work towards certificates in Horticulture, Work Skills, and Hospitality. Several students have been out on independent work placement and all students gained confidence in at least two different industry areas during WPL. Many students have completed independent travel training. We have had students recognised for their citizenship and leadership at assemblies. We had several nominees for the 2024 student council. Everyone has been a kind and caring classmate and peer. The students upheld the USTAR values every day and ESC 15 staff are very proud of the students and feel so lucky to have worked with an amazing group of young people. You will do amazing next year and beyond. Thank you ESC 15 and happy holidays!
ESC 17 - STEFFI VARGHESE & MONISHA SUNIL
We are at the end of a wonderful year! It feels like the time has flown by and it is time to say goodbye to my wonderful students in ESC 17.
We had a spectacular year, and I am truly grateful to have shared the year with my wonderful team. Mrs Botha, Mrs Murugan, Ms Smith, and Mrs Pillay – I am so grateful for all your support, and I couldn’t have done it without you all. It is pleasing to see how much each student progressed in all aspects and they should all be very proud of their achievements. I wish them all the best moving into senior school next year.
To all the families, I wish you all a safe and restful holiday. Thank you for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to work with your child. You have all been amazing to work with and your support has been incredible. Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Steffi Varghese
PHYS ED - MISS HEARD, MR HOLDSWORTH & MS PEREIRA
To finish off the year, our house captains and student councilors attended the annual Leadership Camp at Rottnest Island in week 8, to reward their best efforts and work throughout the year. This was some of the student's first time at Rottnest Island, and for some, it was their first overnight camp as well.
On day 1, we made our way over on the ferry and walked to the basin. Despite the cloudy and cooler weather, the students could not wait to get into the crystal-clear water for their first swim of the trip! After this, we walked back to the settlement to catch the bus out to our accommodation, where students unpacked and went for another swim!
On day 2, we were lucky enough to be joined by the team from the Stephen Michael Foundation! They took us out to the north side of the island to do some teambuilding games and snorkeling, where the students saw plenty of fish and crayfish! That afternoon, our group went to the golf club to play some barefoot bowls and have a sausage sizzle dinner. In the evening, a group of students headed down to the beach to try their luck at fishing. With light fading and everyone starting to pack up, Kenneth threw his last cast (and almost himself) into the water, and to everyone’s surprise, we heard him shout, “FISH! FISH”. He managed to catch a big King-George whiting for us all to try later that night.
Our final day was filled with packing and cleaning up the house in the morning before heading to Geordie Bay for our final swim of the trip before heading back to Fremantle.
The students had a great time in the sun and the water, and so did the staff! We would like to thank Oscar, Ollie, Jackson, Anisha, Hannah, Zoe, Kenneth, Phillip, Nick, Liam, Chris, and Isaac for having great attitudes and lots of laughs throughout the camp. A massive shoutout to Macca, Simba, Tez, Maddy, and Liv from the Stephen Michael Foundation, for coming over and facilitating activities for our students.
A huge thank you to Miss Heard, Ms. Pereira, Ms. Johnson, and Mr. Holdsworth for organising the camp.
Have a safe and sporty holiday everyone, and we can’t wait to see you all back next year!
Mr Holdsworth, Miss Heard, Ms Pereira
Year 11 student Zoe Balcombe was awarded the final Employee of the Month for 2023.
During these final weeks of workplace learning, students presented lovely heartfelt gifts to their host employers to thank them for being wonderfully inclusive work environments. These special gifts were made at school by some of the senior students. Every single host has expressed how special these have been, especially because they have been made by the very talented students of Leeming ESC. Students should be so proud of their efforts, in creating these masterpieces.
AYLA (Assisting Your Life to Achieve) has hosted student school-based traineeships this year. We were delighted to give back to their organisation by donating all school proceeds from the Containers for Change program, over 20 boxes of decommissioned books, and many handmade wooden projects. We appreciate and value their support of our students.

As we are winding up the 2023 program, 2024 plans are well underway. We are pleased to confirm all students have a placement that aligns with their My Plan document.
Students have been busy going on tours and excursions, as well as completing online pre-requisite training that is specific to placements where required.
A special mention to the following students for completing the required training for their upcoming placement:
