Term 3 started with IEP and My Plan meetings to discuss student progress and setting meaningful goals for second semester with families. I encourage families to keep regular communication with your child’s teacher and classroom staff throughout the semester, through Seesaw or student diaries. For attendance, please inform classroom teachers or notify the school on 9237 6870 or SMS 0437519299 if your child is away. For unexplained absences, a phone call will be made to parents or carers and an automated message will be sent by 10:00am if there has been no correspondence to explain an absence.
To support student transition pathways, Leeming ESC has partnered with Valued Lives in delivering a Discovery program to year 12 students through a Contemporary Employment Initiative Grant. Ben Larcrombe from Valued Lives and school staff have been working with students throughout the year to explore their strengths, hidden talents, employment goals, and support needs to creatively document their findings into a Discovery portfolio that will assist them when linking with employers or service providers post school. Senior students have also been working through their My Plans this term and it has been exciting to hear about the great achievements and plans for future pathways. Thank you to all the parents and carers who have been working collaboratively with staff and navigating the NDIS system to identify supports and pathways. I appreciate the effort and thought you have put into planning for the future, and it is exciting to see students starting to transition into employment and customised programs in preparation for their transition from school.
This term we welcomed Deputy Principal Maitlin Cutts to Leeming SHS ESC. Mailtin has been a great addition to our administration team so far this term and she is enjoying her transition from primary school to high school and has very quickly developed relationships with staff and students.
Multicultural Day celebrated the cultural diversity at Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC on Friday 18th August. This is a very special annual event to enjoy inclusivity and diversity between our two schools. The food, activities and performances created a wonderful atmosphere and a very special thank you must go to Ms Valentine and Miss Cutts, for their support and coordination of events in collaboration with Leeming SHS.
The next exciting event for this term is the House Athletics Carnival on Friday 8th September. Students have been practising for the carnival during their Phys Ed lessons. Thank you Mr Holsdworth, Ms Heard and Ms Pereira for all your coordination and organisation in preparation for the carnival. I am looking forward to seeing students demonstrating our USTAR values, participating and having fun on the day.

ESC 2 - TIM HARRIES & KATE BALL
After a well-deserved break, ESC2 have been off to a great start in Term 2. We have been busy learning lots of new skills and preparing the students for their camp and workplace learning. The students are lucky enough to experience several industry visit’s this term! They will visit Good Sammy Enterprises, Ability’s Container for Change and Bunnings. This is an amazing experience as it gives them the opportunity to become familiar with workplace environments and the expectations, they bring with them. They will observe safe practises in the workplace and gain confidence in asking questions and following instructions.
The students and staff have spent lots of time this term getting ready for camp. We have spent time discussing the finer details, including the places the students will visit and what activities they will take part in whilst on camp. This will be a great experience for the students. They will have an amazing time, as will the staff attending.
In Mathematics, we have been focusing on Measurement and Geometry. We have utilised our knowledge of time to assist us during our CBL visits. Before leaving we checked the bus schedule and calculated what time we would need to leave school to catch the bus on time. We then worked out what time we would need to leave Success Library in order to have enough time for lunch and then catch correct bus so that we arrived back at school in time. This was tricky! however; it gave the students a greater independence and confidence in future goals of catching the bus independently or with support during their work placements. In Mathematics, we also learnt about capacity and how we measure capacity in ml and l.
Another focus this term was teaching the students the USTAR value Achievement. We explored what Achievement looks like and how we should have a Can Do! attitude and how we must give things a go. We put this into practise during mathematics when we learnt about capacity and during our role play scene of having an injection at the Doctors! We have some great actors in ESC2! The students then created a personal goal that they would like to work towards, focusing on a growth mindset.
We have a busy five weeks ahead of us with lots of exciting things happening. The students have their camp to look forward to in week 8 followed by the House Athletics Carnival. We also have Multicultural Day and Book Week! The rest of the term will be finished before we know it!
Well done to the students for their excellent achievements this term!
ESC2 Team
It has been such a busy term, we hit the ground running Day 1. It was lovely to meet most of our parents at the recent My Plan meetings and heart warming to see some students making good progress in their journey of self-discovery.
Our year 10 students had their first taste of work experience at Striker Recreation Centre last semester. This has been a fantastic opportunity to learn about the expectations of the workplace, as well as developing work readiness routines such as hygiene, keeping uniforms clean, keeping tidy workplaces and solving problems that may arise in the workplace. We are so proud of everything our students have achieved.
This term, we will be going on several industry visits. To date, we visited Alinea Inc and students had the opportunity to get first-hand experience of different sections and jobs at Alinea. In the coming weeks, we will be visiting Good Sammy Enterprises, Ability’s Container for Change and Bunnings. We are so grateful to these organisations for hosting our students. It has been a real eye opener for the students to get real-world perspective on different functions within an organisation and will certainly guide future conversations in our My Plan meetings.

This term, our students have celebrated 100 days of school this year with a range of exciting projects. Our students also listed 100 things they wanted to do before the end of the school year. We have also been developing our skills in narrative writing with specific focus on addressing the 5Ws (Who, What, Why, When and Where) and 1H (How).
In Mathematics, we have been learning to sharpen our skills in reading the clocks and learning the concept of elapsed time. For CBL this term, students are developing skills in identifying landmarks and refining their road crossing skills. Our students have also enjoyed the change of visiting the library and Youth Centre.
The next couple of weeks will be filled with lots of events such as AFL Carnival, Sports Carnival, Multicultural Day, class camp… so watch this space!
From the ESC 3 team
Ms Parwani, Ms Sherlock, Mrs Mahalingam, Mrs Shivers and Ms Klashourst
Kaya noonakort (Hi everyone),
It has been a wonderful and wet term so far.
Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the students, families, therapist, and the Workplace Learning Team for the incredible involvement during student, ‘My Plan’ meetings. It is an exciting time with students being provided a work experience placement for term 4.
We have visited a variety of Work Industries and these excursions help provide students with an awareness of different types of workplaces, roles, and responsibilities.

The class has recognised and celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day and International Day of World Indigenous People. This learning linked with the Multicultural Day, that was a fun, colourful, vibrant and entertaining event, enjoyed by the whole school.
We have enjoyed an incursion from Constable Care to learn more about online safety, linked to the students ASDAN E-Safety Course. And Book Week is coming up soon. The theme this year is Read, Grow, and Inspire. Start thinking about your costumes as this is a fun event to be a part of.
As part of the Health and Physical Education program, the students have been working, one on one with a sports student-teacher from Notre Dame University. The students have been developing a relationship with their buddies who tailored programs to meet their individual needs and abilities to enhance not only their sporting skills, in a range of sports, but to develop an awareness of sportsmanship. Students have enjoyed travelling to the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle to participate in these fun learning activities.

In Bush Rangers, our focus is on, Endangered Animals, and the students have researched, the Marri tree and will continue to learn about the many animals that rely on trees for their home, food and shelter, including the Koala, Chuditch, Carnaby Cockatoo and the Numbat. In the coming weeks, we will also investigate the predators and acknowledge, Threatened Species Day, on September 7th.
We celebrated, National Tree Day! The class received 30 native plants provided through the Phosphorus Awareness Project grant (SERCUL). As part of caring for the environment, the students planted seedlings into Aboriginal Garden and around the school. A huge thank you, Natasha Bowden from SERCUL for the seedling and your ongoing support year after year!

Lastly, we are all looking forward to the Year 10. Cohort camp to CYC Baldivis in the coming few weeks.
Thank you, students, families, and educators, of ESC4. It is as a united team that we learn, grow, and achieve so much!

Mrs Vann, Mrs Blacklock, Ms Palma and Miss Coles
We can’t believe it's already second semester! This term for CBL we have started to go to Bull Creek shops and practise our public transport training skills. On our first trip there we had a great time and the boys all enjoyed some hot chips from the Kebab shop. In Literacy, we’ve been practicing our speaking and listening skills by sharing the things that we did on the weekend. We’ve also been looking at fairy-tale stories and mapping out the beginning, middle and end of the stories. In Maths, we’ve been looking at multiplication and using the language of ‘groups of’ to help us understand. In Health we have been looking at healthy eating and which foods make up the 5 main food groups. This has linked to our topic of the human body which we are learning about in Science. The boys all practised measuring their heart rates at rest and then after exercise to look at the difference between them. It's been an exciting start to the term and we’re excited to keep going.
Brett Limpus
This term we are looking forward to Book Week coming up! Watch out for the ESC 6 staff costumes! So far this term we have been busy learning about narratives and story telling in literacy, practising our skills to soon write our own stories and become authors! So far we have created our own monster characters, and we had many different wacky monsters created! In maths we are focusing on telling the time, and have been working really hard towards extending our skills in this area.
We have been learning about the human body in Science and Geography in HASS. Everyone in the class can now label WA and Perth on a map of Australia, and some of us can label every state and capital city! We are also learning about individual states including natural and man-made landmarks.
The class enjoyed an incursion from Constable Care to learn more about online safety. We have also gone on our first CBL excursion of the term to Bull Creek Central, which we enjoyed. We are looking forward to more CBL trips coming up. We will also be getting busy with our business enterprise, making Father’s Day cards to sell this term.
We have started to make a gratitude tree in our class, which will continue to grow throughout the rest of this term as we add more and more things we are grateful for. Miss Blackburn and the ESC6 staff are grateful for all of our AMAZING students!
It has been an exciting start to term 3 in ESC 7. We began our Community Based Learning excursions to Leeming Forum, where the students demonstrated exceptional road safety and community behaviour. The students are completing tasks such as locating groceries and adhering to budgets with a specific grocery list. We are looking forward to more CBL outings for the remainder of the term.
In the classroom, we are beginning new topics such as earth & space, puberty, environmental conservation and natural VS man-made landmarks and disasters. It is pleasing to see our students show such a keen interest in our solar system and planets. In addition to this, students have swapped into their new options classes, such as dace and art. I am looking forward to seeing some performances and artwork throughout the term!
I would also like to welcome our new Education Assistants, Mrs Lisa Wood-Smith (T-F) and Miss Georgia Hillas (M&F). They both make a wonderful addition to our expanding team in ESC7 and have quickly become part of the family.
I am looking forward to updating you all with what we get up to by the end of the term!
Mrs Bartlett
ESC8 have had a great start to term 3. Students got straight back to work at their options classes, with the new addition of Art classes this semester. In class we have been busy putting our math knowledge into practice through our CBL program. Our students have been developing their money skills at the local IGA and wow they sure have impressed us!!
During literacy classes we have began studying the popular novel ‘How to Train your Dragon.’ We are studying a chapter at a time and making comparisons to the movie adaptation. Students are working through the novel and at the end of the semester we will watch the movie the whole way through as a reward for their efforts.
During HASS we are developing our knowledge of Australia, the states and territories and various famous landmarks throughout our country. Through our protective behaviours program this semester we are working on personal space and how this works in various settings e.g. at home, public transport and at school. We will also study puberty this semester, taking a closer look at how and why our bodies are changing, how this can affect our emotions and strategies to help regulate these new emotions.
We have also welcomed our new EA Claire Brewer to our classroom this term, Claire has worked in many of our ESC classrooms and is looking forward to getting to know us and working with us until the end of the year.
We have a very action packed second half of term 3 with the Multicultural Festival, Book Week and our Sport Carnival. We are very excited to be learning and experiencing so many new opportunities this term in ESC 8.

It is hard to believe we are half way through term 3 already! This term we welcomed our new Education Assistant, Mr El Chami. It has been great getting to know Mr El Chami and we are excited for the rest of the term with him part of the ESC9 team!
We have all been enjoying our new option classes this semester including Music, Art, D&T, Home Economics, Dance and Computing. We have also started learning about new and exciting topics in class too, such as time and fractions in Maths and Personal History in HASS. In Protective Behaviours, we are learning about the importance of personal space, and with Mrs Sunil, on a Tuesday, we are learning about living and non-living things in Science.

In week 4, we began our term 3 CBL program to Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre. Last semester we became so independent catching the 516 bus and all the transport skills that went with it, and are now transferring those skills over to using the Mandurah train line from Murdoch train station to Cockburn train station. We all did a great job in week 4 and are excited to develop these skills over the term.
Miss Gage
I cant believe it is week 5 already. This term is flying by. We have had our first CBL trip to the Leeming IGA this term, in which the students followed instructions, practised their road crossings and enjoyed recess at the park before walking to the IGA. Once in the IGA, the students completed tasks such as locating groceries and adhering to budgets with a specific grocery list. Each students behaviour out in the community was exceptional and we look forward to more outings throughout the remainder of the year.
In class we have begun many new topics. The current favourite is our book and movie comparison of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in literacy. Each week we read a few chapters and compare what we have read in the book to that section of the movie. The students have excelled in comparing the characters, setting and plot of the story. Students have also been working very hard on their money math skills, as well as identifying the states, territories and capital cities of Australia in HASS.
We are looking forward to Multicultural Day, as well as the Sports Carnival coming up this term. Before we know it, it will be holidays again.
Thank you as always to my wonderful team of EAs, Kristy Hewer, Karlene Wynd and Sarah Russell for their support as well as all parents and carers.
Jack Drennan – ESC 10 Teacher
What an amazing term 3 everyone in ESC11 has had already. We all enjoyed our midyear break, but it has been fantastic to get back into the swing of things.
Something the whole class has enjoyed this term is travelling to Westfield Booragoon for CBL. We have loved exploring the wide range of stores they have to offer and of course, devouring our yummy lunches we purchase. Another highlight of the term was hosting the week 5 ESC assembly, all of the boys did an awesome job reading and presenting to the school and should be proud of the courage they showed speaking in front of a large group.
I have been very proud of all nine boys this term and I can’t wait to see how everyone in ESC11 will shine for the rest of the year!!
Mr Calasse and Team ESC11
Term 3 has started off with a lot of excitement and new experiences. ESC 12 students have started Travel Training using the bus and train to Cockburn Gateways for CBL. Students have begun showing confidence and independence in navigating through the train station and shopping centre. They have also started the Notre Dame Program during Phys Ed on Fridays. Their allocated buddies have created an individual sports program for each student to develop their gross motor skills. Students are learning to be resilient and gain new skills.

In Science, students have been learning about Life Cycles and have looked at the Life Cycle of a human, plant and butterfly. During HASS, students have been identifying and naming different Australian states and their capitals. They have worked in pairs to look for some tourist destinations they would like to visit in Australia. In Bush Rangers, they have been learning about how to protect Endangered Australian animals. Students have also been learning about the different relationships and how to keep friendships by showing respect. They also participated in a webinar on Cybersafety presented by the ‘E-Commissioner’ and learnt various ways to be safe online while using technology.
Am so proud of my class hosting the assembly along with the other year 9 students with great maturity. Well done, ESC 12! A big shout out to my awesome EA's who have assisted in delivering my programs, providing a safe and engaging learning environment for our students.
Mrs Khosla
It’s been another busy start to the school term. In Week 1, students started at their new work placements, which include - Activ Property Care, Willeton Community Garden, Bentley Community Garden, Richmond PS Canteen, Bunnings Claremont, Bunnings Willetton and GSE Warehouse. In class discussions, the students have been very positive about their new work placements. Everyone is enjoying the change of environment and the challenge of learning new tasks and skills.
During Week 4, the students and staff went on CBL to the Aviation Heritage Museum, as part of the ASDAN Out in the Community course. It was a great day out, despite the weather. The students were fascinated by the range of planes on display and were rapt listeners learning about the history of flying.
Toby – “I liked learning about the helicopters and planes and enjoyed going into the helicopter and playing the flying simulator game.”
Isaiah – “ I like seeing the big bomber plane and going in the helicopter”
Ethan – “ I learned about the propellors”
Ryley- “I liked the jets and the helicopters”
Nick – “ I liked seeing all the different airplanes and helicopters”
Luke – “ I like the big planes with all the guns. I also liked how you could sit in the helicopter”
Joaquin – “ I looked inside the planes, and sat in the helicopter”
Ryan – “I liked sitting in the plane”
Mrs Rebecca Pumfrey
This term students visited the Aviation Heritage Museum. They were lucky enough to have their own tour guide who was happy to answer all their questions. Students learnt about various aeroplanes and helicopters and were even able to board some of them!

Here is what some of the students had to say about the excursion.
Sam – The big jets were really cool! It was interesting to learn about how the old planes took days to fly from Perth to Melbourne, but now it only takes hours.
Hanna – I liked the planes and buying an ice-cream at the end.
Nathan – I liked going inside the big plane.
Aidan – I liked sitting in the helicopter.
Jake – I liked to learn about the history of the planes. It was fun watching my voice on the radio transmitter screen when I spoke into the microphone.
Karleigh – I enjoyed sitting inside the plane and how we had to climb upwards.
Nekoda – I liked the big plane.
Students also participated in an incursion with The Nearer to Nature Team learning about ways to save threatened species. After identifying local wildlife, students practised capturing their toy furry friend using a cage trap and scanning them for a microchip to record their details.

The class is looking forward to going to Kings Park later this term to complete the First Aid and Bush Survival Skills program, which includes fire and shelter building, and making their own damper!
ESC14 - Mrs Megrail and team
One of the focus areas for Bush Rangers in Year 11 is first aid. ESC 15 has been fortunate to have Ms Kitak, the school Nurse, visiting us this term to teach us about first aid. We have learnt about DRSABCD, medical conditions such as asthma and epilepsy. Ms Kitak taught us how to use an Epipen and we all had a go using one. During our last session we will be learning how to use bandages, which may be used in the case of snake bites or sprains.

This term in CBL we are planning a trip to a recreation centre. We are also planning a trip out to the shops and a café for our Money Introduction ASDAN course. We have decided to buy ingredients to make pizza and will be visiting Leeming Forum. Our trip to a recreation centre will be to the Cockburn Ice Arena.
We are looking forward to sharing more with you about these excursions in the next edition of the newsletter.

Emily Muco
Halfway through term 3…time flies when you’re having fun.
Students have returned to workplace on Wednesdays and have settled in well. They have also been working on their resumes and graduation portfolios getting ready for graduation, which will be here before we know it!
We would like to welcome Mr Tim Harries to our class as our teacher on Thursdays and Fridays. The students and Mr Harries have been working hard in literacy, numeracy and E safety, with a particular focus on responsible social media use. In the remainder of the term, in addition to our usual timetable, we will be working on our transport skills on some planned excursions. One of these will be a trip to Perth Museum where we’re looking forward to exploring students’ favourite interests.
Lastly… a big congratulations to Harvey on receiving the class certificate at assembly this week, and to Raymond, who turned the big 18 on Tuesday!
ESC16
ESC 17 - STEFFI VARGHESE & MONISHA SUNIL
As we enter Week 5 of Term 3, it's remarkable to think that our students have already completed four terms of learning and development. This term in our HASS lesson students engaged in a range of activities to deepen their understanding of Australian political leaders. They conducted research, created visual presentations, and participated in thoughtful discussions about the impact these leaders had on Australia's trajectory.
In Phys Ed, they had an unforgettable day at Notre Dame University, where they were paired up with their buddies for a day of camaraderie and play. The campus buzzed with laughter and excitement as our kids engaged in various interactive games and sports activities with their university buddies.
One of the highlights of the day was witnessing the connections forming between our students and their buddies. Friendships were forged through shared experiences and the joy of playing together. These bonds will undoubtedly continue to grow as the term progresses, and we're excited to see how they will support and uplift each other in the weeks to come.

PHYS ED - MISS HEARD, MR HOLDSWORTH & MS PEREIRA
LESC Soccer Carnival
On the last day of Term 2, students competed in a centre-wide soccer carnival, which saw all our classes show their competitive side out on a soccer pitch. During the tournament, we saw magical goals being scored, fair play and teamwork with opposition sides. It was a sight to behold! The final match was played between an undermanned ESC 1 class and a red-hot ESC 5. Both teams went goal during regular time and ended up with a draw to send the match into… you guessed it… penalties! It was almost a foreshadowing of the Matildas quarter-final, where the favourites (ESC 1) fell at the final hurdle and the underdogs (ESC 5) won the inaugural Leeming ESC Soccer Tournament! It was a fun filled day had by all and we can’t wait to host it again next year!

Notre Dame
Our Year 9 & 10 students are participating in a collaboration program with the University of Notre Dame, which sees our students paired up with a HPE student from Notre Dame. Each Friday, we travel to Fremantle to meet our buddies. The university students get the opportunity to build relationships and provide an individualised program to our students in a given sport. Our students have loved getting to know their Notre Dame buddies and look forward to our sessions every Friday!
Athletics
During Phys Ed lessons this term, all classes have been participating in Athletics, in preparation for the Athletics Carnival in week 8. Students have been developing their skills in a range of Athletics events including - Javelin, Discus, Shotput, Long jump, Relays, Team games and running races. We are looking forward to the carnival on Friday, 8th September. Please feel free to come and support students on the day!
Leading on from a successful placement Year 12 student Taine Pitt toured Parliament House, got “behind the scenes” with the building services team, and visited the Electoral Commission Education Office. Taine represented the school in a very responsible and professional manner. The staff were all very pleased to meet Taine and hear about the wonderful work experience he had with Local Member of Parliament Yaz Mubarakai.

This term we welcomed Rex Koo and Corbin West to the workplace learning program.
Rex Koo
My first work placement since starting at Leeming SHS ESC is at Officeworks. Some of the jobs I have been doing are the price checking and putting the stock on the shelf. I am enjoying using the scanning device.
Rex is to be commended for his positivity and productivity at Officeworks. He has been working hard as part of the team forward facing stock. Awesome work!
Kooper Muston
This term I am at Officeworks. Some of the jobs I have been doing are sorting, pulling stock forward, my favourite job has been using the scanner.
Corbin is to be commended for his safe work practices operating machinery and handling equipment at the Men's Shed. These are great work attributes. Well done to Corbin!
Henry Baum has been awarded The Employee of the Month award. Henry has proved to be a confident and enthusiastic team member at Alinea. He has excelled throughout his work experience and has gained a variety of new warehousing skills. Henry is to be commended for safely operating machinery in accordance to workplace procedures. We wish Henry all the very best with the transition from work experience into employment with Alinea!
We are busily working behind the scenes preparing placements for all year 10 students to have their very first work experience in term 4. Exciting times!!
To support the Uniform Policy the P&C operates a Uniform Shop (within the school next to the Canteen) as a service to parents. Both new and good quality second-hand clothing items and current second-hand text books are available at the shop all year round.
The students at Leeming ESC and Leeming SHS wear the same uniform and is compulsory for all students.
The Leeming SHS uniform shop is open:

Book Week 2023 is being run from 19th - 25th August 2023. With thanks to the talented illustrator Matt Ottley, the 2023 CBCA Children's Book Week these "Read, Grow, Inspire" comes to life in the striking flying hero seahorse carrying young readers through an endless, boundary-less, sunlight lit space where imagination has unlimited scope for growth and infinite possibly.
On Friday, 25th August 2023, LSHS and ESC are encouraging staff and students to dress in their favourite book character. The library will also be hosting a variety of activities throughout the week. We cant wait to see all the amazing creations.
Follow the official LESC Facebook page for event information, photos, student updates and parent updates
The private Facebook group is a safe space to help parents and carers connect with one another, offer and receive support, share information, experiences and resources, and foster social connections between students out of school hours.
The group is administered by the parent representatives on the LESC Board. The Facebook group can be found at the link below; where you can request to join. For more information, contact Bernadette McCarthy on email bmmcleod@bigpond.com
