This term our year 7 and 8 students have enjoyed camps at Point Perron and Swan Valley Adventure Centre. Students thoroughly enjoy camps and the opportunities to challenge themselves and develop their confidence and resiliency. I had the opportunity to join our year 7s for a day at Point Perron and got to experience firsthand the smiles, laughter and sense of achievement as they climbed creates, hit the target in archery and paddled a kayak and stand up paddle board. I was very impressed with all the year 7 students, their behaviour and give it a go attitude was very inspiring. The year 11, 12 and leavers classes will get to enjoy their camp experiences later in the term. Thank you to all the wonderful staff who give up their time to take students on camp, it is an amazing and worthwhile experience for all of our students.
On Monday 27th May Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe gave students, parents and staff valuable information about being safe online and internet awareness including: social networking safely, gaming, online footprint and social media apps. Paul is a very engaging speaker and gave students and parents current up to date information. It was very pleasing to hear from Paul that students had retained information from the 2018 presentation and he was able to expand on their knowledge and understanding.
Something that maybe of interest to parents is the Cyber Safety Smartphone introduced by Family Zone. It looks and feels like an iPhone but has software built in with Family Zone parental controls. Allows you to manage screen time, limit apps and games, restrict social media, safe content, search and YouTube. More information can be found at https://www.familyzone.com/fz-one.
If you were unable to attend the parent information session and would like some information visit the Surf Safe Online website at http://www.surfonlinesafe.com.au/
Our School Chaplain Vangi Hunter and Student Services Manager Mrs Houden have created Leeming Links, a social group at recess and lunch times where students can develop their social skills through fun and engaging activities. Student interest is growing with increasing numbers of students becoming involved. Thank you to Mrs Houden and Ms Hunter for initiating this great program.
Congratulations to Chloe Banks who has gained employment at Work Power and Gerald Chang who has gained employment at Alinea, formerly The Spine and Limb Foundation. This wonderful achievement is the result of hard work over the past six years of school. Well done to, Zen Farcic who is currently completing a work trial and Jake Alington and Troy Tan who are soon to start work trials later this term. Sarah and William have both increased their working days to three days a week. Well done to all these senior students.
A reminder that Tuesday 4th June is a School Development Day for staff and students return to school on Wednesday 5th June.

School Community Support Project
The School Community Support Project has been embraced by the entire school community and the level of support has been tremendous. Many families and students at the school have been assisted and the continued respect and compassion demonstrated is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
Your generosity has meant that we have ample hygiene products and soaps, these items are no longer required.
As we move into the colder months we require some different items for you to consider providing:
- sneakers (larger sizes). Perhaps those sneakers that have been replaced by newer ones however still have some use.
- track pants and tops for cooler days (large sizes).
The school also provides emergency lunches for some students therefore we have a requirement for:
- cheese
- butter and margarine
- cling wrap
- snap lock bags
These perishable items are funded out of the school budget so by donating them we can ensure the funds are used on other projects in the school.
Thank you to everyone in our School Community.

It has been a very busy start to term 2.
We went on a Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) excursion this term. This provided another wonderful opportunity for the students to develop skills, ranging from social to learning about conservation on this wonderful planet of ours. This year, we went to Lake Booragoon and planted 40 trees. Students worked tirelessly and received wonderful comments from the volunteers on student’s work ethics in caring for our environment.
Students have also been working on improving their IT skills as they researched rules and consequences in various places and shared with their peers their awesome presentation.
Our students have been working hard in English and are looking forward to using these generalised skills on expected behaviour while out in the community with the upcoming visit to the Art Gallery.
In Math, we have been practising our calculator skills as well as learning to calculate change through lots of hands on activities.
We had numerous visits this term. We had an engaging and interactive session with St John's who delivered a First Aid course. Students learned what to do in case of emergency. There were so many opportunities to practise resuscitation and well as use the defibrillator.
We also had a delightful and engaging session with Paul Litherland on online safety. We learned the importance of changing passwords regularly, how to set up a strong password as well as to stand up against cyber bullying.
At the Inter-school Basketball carnival held on Tuesday 28th May. Wil, Josh and Britanny all won the most valueble player award. Congratulations.

Term 2 has already been super exciting, with many more fun events coming our way. Watch this space!

Term 2 is off to a flying start. We have been very busy on Wednesdays, with our Work Right program and learning the importance of keeping our workspaces clean and safe. In english we are discussing the importance of stranger awareness and what a ‘safe stranger’ means. In maths we have been exploring the concept of time and have designed analogue watches of our very own that display important times in our day.
CBL has been great this term, as we have been visiting Southlands Boulevarde Shopping Centre and travelling on the Transperth bus. We have also learnt how to check the balance of our Smartriders on the iPad and have practiced preselecting our lunch orders for McDonalds and ordering these one at a time and collecting the correct change. It has been a lot of fun and every student has represented the school with maturity and respect and they should be very proud.
This week, we were very fortunate to plant trees in the dunes of South Beach, Fremantle and learn about the importance of conservation and biodiversity. It was a fantastic day and was great to get ‘down and dirty’ and dig in the sand and help the environment.

It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of Week 4 already, this term has absolutely flown by! We’ve been learning about “safe strangers” and “safe places” within our community in English. The students have continued to practise their money skills in Maths and have commenced the exploration of time as a concept.
Wednesday’s have been dominated by our Workright studies. We have been learning all about the skills and attitudes needed to be successful in the workplace. Mr. Z and Glenda, our workplace supervisors, keep us busy from start to finish!
We have had a great time on CBL this term. We have teamed up with Mr. Brechany’s class in visiting Southlands Boulevarde Shopping Centre and travelling on the Transperth bus. The CBL excursions have allowed us to practise safe behaviours in the community and provided us an opportunity to put our money skills into practice. The highlight for every student is without question the lunch time trip to McDonalds!
CBL Fun!

Working hard on Workright Wednesdays

On the 1st to 3rd May all our Year 8 students went to the Swan Valley Adventure Centre for a camp. Students participated in a range of conservation and team building activities to develop a stronger sense of unity and caring for the environment.
Camp activities included team building games, commando course, archery, possum glider, flying fox, frisbee golf and a bonfire. We had a brilliant time!
The students were a credit to their families on camp. Staff members were so proud of each student on camp.

This is what the students said:
Skye - My favourite activity on camp was telling a story about my friend Sam at the bonfire.
Sam - My favourite activity on camp was the Flying fox because it was fast and fun.
Zachary - My favourite activity on camp was the camp bonfire because I like watching the crackling wood burn.
Aidan - My favourite activity on camp was the Possum Glider.
Lily - My favourite activity on camp was going on the Flying fox with Mrs Knox.
Ella - My favourite activity on camp was the Flying fox because it was fast and high.
Johnny - My favourite thing I did in China was night walking with my dad.

Term 2 has already been super exciting and we’re only halfway there! In week 1 all three year 8 classes headed to Swan Valley Adventure Centre for our Year 8 Camp. We had such a fantastic time trying out new activities and challenges including the flying fox, possum glider, bush craft, commando course and many more. We all returned to school after camp and got cracking on making a wonderful gift for our beautiful mums ready for Mother’s Day. It was lovely to see what everyone had to say about why they love their Mum. Making our gifts started to get our entrepreneurial minds racing about ideas of products to make and sell for the ESC Pop Up Shops which is coming up next term. Stay tuned!!
Last week on National Volunteer Day we put on our Bush Ranger gear and headed to Lake Booragoon Reserve with Mrs Vann’s class and Laura from Conservation Volunteer Australia (CVA). We volunteered and helped conserve the environment by planting shrubs and Banksias at the Lake. I am so proud of every one from ESC6 and how motivated, independent and caring they were during this excursion. What amazing Bush Rangers!
Term 2 is off to a fabulous start in ESC 7 and camp was a highlight we will all look back on fondly!
It has been pleasing to see the growth in maturity and independence students have started to demonstrate this term. I have also enjoyed hearing increasing detail developing in the news stories presented each Tuesday, by each student, a big thank you to parents for supporting this achievement.
Furthermore, I would like to mention how thankful I am for the wonderful parent support and engagement seen through our class SeeSaw page. The kids love sharing their learning journeys and this has allowed them to showcase their achievements in the classroom with you more often!
Here are some photos of our awesome Mother’s Day “Mum and Me” gifts (creatively constructed and lead by our talented Ms Mitchell) and Year 7 Camp.

What an amazing start to term 2, with my ESC 8 students! Students have returned back to school with a big smile on their faces and ready to tackle new challenges.
The Bush Rangers after school activities have started and students prepared themselves for their first ever high school camp. The camp was such a great success where the students participated in team games, showed their talents, exhibited resilience and virtues like respect, care and kindness. They also did paddle boarding, kayaking, archery, rock climbing and crate building.
Each student who went on the camp displayed great enthusiasm, overcame their fears and had a positive attitude to have a go and they all worked together at meal times to lay the table, wash the dishes and clean up after the meals. Bed times were the best as there were lots of laughs and giggles and this had a ripple effect. It was a true reflection of their maturity and resilience.
During the term students have also been learning about public and private places, activities and clothing as part of protective behaviours. In Bush Rangers the young cadets have been practising the drill and the code of conduct. They have also been looking at ways to conserve our environment.
Our Community Based Learning will start from Friday week 5 and the students are quite excited to practise their road safety skills and demonstrate their shopping skills. I would like to thank all the parents and carers for their amazing support for the camp and also would like to thank my team, Mrs Sajjay, Mrs Rollin and Ms Patterson for their endless effort in making this camp a success.

It’s been an incredible 5 weeks so far this term! We went on our Year 8 Camp to the Swan Valley Adventure Centre and it was AMAZING! All students attempted something they had never tried before and the results were great to see! Some of the activities were; flying fox, possum glider, bushcraft and team building. I’m incredibly proud of each student for their efforts over the 3-day camp. Well done.

In Science we are learning all about Physics and the way things move. ESC 9 students have loved exploring kinetic and potential energy in everyday objects, check out the photos below! During Phys Ed, students have been busting out their best dance moves and loving the music they get to bop along to. Watch this space; there may be a dance off happening near you.

ESC 9 Team
Mrs Knox, Ms Festa, Mrs Blacklock and Mrs Bruns
We have had a great start to term 2!
This term we replaced Line Dancing with Sport, facilitated by Mrs Jackie Pereira: an experienced and dedicated physical education staff member. Over the past few weeks all students have been participating in learning soccer skills and we have found some hidden talent among our crew! It is a great hour of fun, competition and skill development as well as team building and fitness.
Bush Rangers is a predominately practical program, which allows students to explore activities outside of the classroom. Trainers from St John Ambulance facilitated a First Aid Focus program on our Campus where students watched presentations and participated in practical activities to demonstrate their understanding.
A further focus of Bush Rangers this term has been on our drill formations which Mr Z has been instrumental in upskilling us.
With a focus on conservation, staff and students recently joined with another class to partake in a revegetation activity in the coastal dunes at South Beach in Fremantle. We were blessed with perfect weather and students worked between the two classes, sharing ideas on how to fix barriers around new vegetation to keep plants safe from the elements.
The CBL program on Friday’s has been a big success. Students catch buses and trains to Cockburn Youth Centre and then choose what activities to participate in: table tennis, 8-ball, Foosball, reading and basketball. On occasions they will interact with other members of the community who use the space. It encourages students to experience leisure activities in a community environment.
There are two math groups that run within our class. Group One is currently planning a morning tea for week 9: deciding what food to prepare, working out a budget, coordinating tasks in a timeline. Group Two have commenced a series of ‘Stations’ designed from their skill focus in Term One. Stations include independent work, money, number and a focus on specific goals. Students thrive in this structured lesson.
Miss Renee Davis, Mrs Long, Mrs Mahalingam, Mrs Putland and Mrs Smithson.
Year 11.1 started off term 2, by holding an ANZAC Day ceremony. Money raised by the students selling Poppy Pots was presented to our guest speaker Shannon Hennessy on behalf of the organisation Soldier On.
In Term 2 and 3 during class CBL lessons the students will be travel training to Rockingham, focusing on identifying land marks and demonstrating appropriate behaviours when travelling on public transport.

Term Two has continued to be a busy term with students working hard in all their respective subject areas.
Of particular note, was our work in rehabilitating the area directly behind our classroom which was conducted as a part of our Bush Rangers program. The students all agreed that the best idea from their collective brainstorm of possible projects was to try and improve this small patch of land which had sadly been damaged by the work done when placing our new classroom and also a bushfire.
We cleared away dead grass, picked up rubbish and prepared the area for the planting of native plants suited to the area. This included about thirty Marri trees, several varieties of ground cover such as scarlet runner and a range of bush tucker plants. We were also very fortunate in getting the local Rotary Club and Men’s Shed to install three microbat boxes in this area as a way of helping some of our endangered bat species. A big thank you to Colin McCulloch from the Rotary Club for his help with the bat boxes and Amy Warner the Urban Forest Engagement and Education officer from the city of Melville for her wonderful support with this project.

Our latest CBL excursion as part of our ASDAN “Out in the Community” course, was to travel to IKEA. The students prepared for this visit by working out a budget for furnishing their bedroom from scratch. They had to decide upon appropriate bedroom items, think about the actual number that they needed and then work out their individual as well as total costs. Finally, students had to decide if their choices fitted into their given budget. We also used the opportunity to select and purchase a meal in the IKEA restaurant. The excursion was enjoyed by all.

We also enjoyed a morning learning first aid with a team from St Johns Ambulance earlier in the term where we learned life-saving skills.

Work in the classroom continues with the students making good progress on their P units where they are exploring topics like the purpose of “codes of conduct” in the wider community and “Budgets” where they are presently preparing Excel spreadsheets to help the prepare personal budgets as well as the valuable life skills in our independent living class.

Term 2 has already been a very busy time in the Physical Education department! Our year 7/8’s have been learning new soccer skills, focussing on kicking, dribbling and some game play. They have also been lucky enough to be involved in a dance program run by “Wellbeing 4 Kids” every Thursday in term 2. We have seen some awesome moves! The year 9 and 11 classes have been learning Basketball, showing off great skills so far! They year 10’s have been doing AFL, greatly improving on their handballing and kicking skills each week.

The Basketball carnival is quickly approaching, with Leeming entering 2 teams. I wish all the students involved the best of luck and we are looking forward to a fun day! Leeming will also be entering 3 small teams into the WADSA Ten Pin Bowling Carnival in week 6.
Lastly, huge congratulations to Raynor Keane and Ben Shaw who competed in the 2019 Champion Schools Cross Country on Friday May 17th. They both did an outstanding job and we are very proud of them for representing our school.
PERMACULTURE AND HORTICULTURE - VOIN ZIVKOVIC
Our school delivers a Certificate I in Permaculture under Auspice with Skills Strategies International. Four students are enrolled in this nationally recognised certificate and falls under the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package.
Six students are enrolled in the ASDAN Towards Independence Horticulture module.
One of the many projects students are working on include indoor and outdoor plant care and maintenance. Students have planned the task for the day, selected plants and potted up a large indoor plants which were proudly presented to our principal Mrs Keran Davies, to be displayed inside both entries to our Administration building.

Congratulations to our two “Employee’s of the Month” for June:
Gerald Chang is now employed as part of the team at Alinea (formerly The Spine and Limb Foundation). He is working two days per week within the donated goods area, also learning the operations of the cloth pressing machine. Gerald is travelling to and from his workplace independently using public transport.
Chloe Banks is now employed as part of the team at Workpower. Chloe is working two days per week on a variety of contracts for businesses including: the production of flag making for mine site markers, packaging sachets for laundromats, roller door company packaging parts – just to name a few… The team are enjoying her bright bubbly personality as she works!

Well done to all of the workplace learning students whom all are displaying great progress in their workplaces this term
# Watch this space for some upcoming super exciting work news for Leeming ESC students…….
HI Everyone,
I hope you are well and are having a great start to term 2.
I am settling in very well at Leeming ESC and feel like I am getting to know students, staff and families more and more each week.
Mrs Houden and I have been busy with our new Recess and Lunch Groups “Leeming Link” offering something exciting and different each week. “Leeming Link” is run on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday every week at both Recess and Lunch. The students have been getting involved and it’s been great seeing them interact with one another and trying different activities and games.
Here are a couple of photos of our students with the help of Miss Liddicoat and Miss Van Chastelet playing Giant Jenga and Chat Ball. Both games have questions attached to get the students talking and interacting.

“Seasons for Growth” is a grief and loss education program. This program is for students who have experienced a significant change in their life and this change is impacting on their wellbeing.
The change could include a death, parent’s separation, moving home. “Seasons for Growth” is run with a small group of 4 – 7 students, and goes for 9 weeks.
I will be offering the program as the need arises. Please contact me if you would like any further information.
Wishing everyone a successful and happy latter half of Term 2!
Kind regards,
Vangi Evangeli
