The Leavers assembly on Monday, 7th November, was a celebration of our year 12 students and was enjoyed as a school community with families. Many of our year 12 students began their journey in 2017 with others joining along the way. It was a lovely final assembly and I would like to thank the year 12 students for the beautiful gift given to the school from David Gray Astrophotography. This will be hung proudly in the administration office. On behalf of Leeming SHS ESC students and staff, I would like to wish all the leaving seniors the very best for their futures and look forward to sharing some fond memories at the Graduation Dinner on Thursday, 17th November.
As our Leavers are enjoying their last few weeks of school, our new 2023 year 7’s have been enjoying their transition into high school. The transition program started on Wednesday, 26th October, and will conclude on Wednesday, 16th November. A very warm welcome to all our new students and families. I enjoyed getting to meet you all at the Parent Information Morning Tea and getting to know students during transition as they become familiar with staff and their new school environment.
On Monday, 21st November, at 11:30am, families are invited to visit classrooms where students will showcase their programs and achievements for the 2022 school year. This will be followed by an Annual Open Meeting, from 12:45pm – 2:00pm. The School Board, staff and students will provide an overview of the achievements and highlights of the 2022 school year. We look forward to seeing families and celebrating as a school community.
Leeming SHS is a finalist in the WA Education Awards, the winner will be announced on Friday, 18th November. A strong aspect of their application was the collaborative relationship between our two schools. This includes shared facilities, joint committees, and collaborative events such as Multicultural Day, athletics carnival, house group, school ball, pop up shops, student council, and integration opportunities for students. We wish Leeming SHS all the very best in the finals of the WA Education Awards.
Term 4 started with a fun interschool Education Support South Network (ESSN) carnival at Atwell College and is going to finish with some more great community activities including camps, cricket carnival and finally the Family Fun Day on Thursday, 16th December.
It has been a busy and challenging year and I would like to acknowledge all the staff who have worked very hard during the school year. Thank you for your efforts this term in particular as we near the end of the 2022 school year.
I want to focus my School Board insert for this newsletter on the operations and membership of the School Board.
Your school board is made of the community, staff and very importantly, parents.
We are required under the Terms of Reference of our Board to have four parent members.
At the end of this term, we will have only two parent members. This means that the majority of the board work is being carried out by community members and staff.
I understand well the pressures that we all have at this time in keeping ourselves and families going, however I firmly believe that it is vital that parents take an active role in the way in which the school operates and make a contribution to the school community.
The school board is a commitment of two meetings per term, of two hours duration. We hold face to face and on-line meetings to provide some flexibility for attendance.
New members are provided with an induction as well as support and encouragement from those of us who have been in board roles for quite some time.
We ask that you make a time commitment, read the necessary documents, and make a contribution to deliberations at our meetings when you feel comfortable.
Please give serious consideration to committing to a term of office on YOUR school board to ensure effective stewardship and governance is maintained.
Kind regards
Digby Claydon

AMPOL AWARD WINNER - JONE POTGIETER
Congratulations to Jone who was presented the Ampol Best All Rounder Award during the Leeming SHS & Leeming SHS ESC Year 12 Joint Assembly, which was held in Week 1 of this term. The award was presented in recognition of Jone's excellence in academic, leadership, sporting and community service activities.

SPECTRUM SPACE SYMPOSIUM - JAYELAN LEE
The Annual Spectrum Space Symposium was held on 14 -15 October 2022 and our very own Jayelan Lee starred in the event. The Symposium is the only event of its kind in Australia and showcases local, national and international expert speakers, many with lived experience with Autism. Jayelan gave an amazing presentation on "Jayelan's Journey - Schooling and Communication in a Non-Verbal World".
This is what some of the participants said:
"As a mum, Jayelan's speech was highly educational, inspiring and motivating. Thank you Jayelan, you are an incredible advocate for our community."
"Jayelan brought the Hollywood today. YOU ARE THE BOMB!"
"Jayelan brought tears to our eyes - tears of pride. A true ambassador"
"It has taken 3 years to hold this event again so seeing families connect with the school, with providers and families was just wonderful.
The air was filled with smiles and positivity. It was a beautiful and much needed moment in time."
Louisa Franceschini-Piil
22 September 2022
The Leeming Parent Expo was held last term on Wednesday, 21 September 2022 and was a hive of activity with approximately 180 families, educators and providers in attendance from Leeming SHS ESC, Leeming SHS, Cannington Community ESC, Kenwick School and Kensington Secondary School.
The Expo featured 26 Disability Providers specialising in a cross section of services including:
Employment | Leisure & Recreation | Therapy Services | Support Coordination
Plan Management | NDIS | Community Access | Accommodation
All Ability Sports | Life Skills | Independent Living Skills
Caught on camera was Vanessa Booth (VET/WPL Coordinator from Kensington Secondary School) networking with a provider on the evening, and the every-stylish Sarah Lomas (Workplace Learning Coordinator from Leeming ESC) sporting some tennis moves.

Term 4 has been a time of celebration and reflection for our students. As the year winds up, we have had the opportunity to finish up our ASDAN Out in the Community and Money Introduction files to make sure they are ready for moderation. The entire year 11 cohort has gone for a trip to Perth City to visit the museum. While we were there, we looked at a range of interesting exhibits relating to our local geography, native flora and fauna and items from Australia’s history. Our students particularly enjoyed the interactive exhibits that showed off some of the weird and wonderful features of our natural environment.

We have also participated in the ESSN carnival. This was a fantastic day where students showed amazing demonstations of our USTAR values. Our school showed unity, self-responsibility, teamwork, achievement and respect while visiting another school and it was amazing to see how many awards and prizes our students returned with. Overall, students had a huge amount of fun!
With the year coming to an end, we are nearing the end of our preliminary and foundation unit programs. In literacy we are learning about examples of laws in our community and how these are presented to us, such as in news reports and other forms of media. We will be using this to create our own multimedia presentations about a chosen law to share with our classmates. In our mathematics program, our students will be hosting a barbeque to raise funds to protect numbats in Western Australia.
As the year winds down, we want to pass on our congratulations to the graduating class of 2022 and wish them all the very best for the future beyond school!
Mr Lachlan Frewer
Hello to ESC 2 families,
Wow, term 4 has sneaked up and here we are half way through already! The year has flown and we have all certainly learned a lot. Our students are growing up quickly as we are all turning 16 and are entering adulthood.
In preparation for this we have spent a lot of time throughout the year getting ready for work placement and the time finally arrived this term. Students are in a range of workplaces, from pet stores to car repair workshops. This is their first taste of work experience which will now continue for the rest of their school lives, having opportunities to try a host of different industries of their choice. We have all been doing this with our USTAR values in practice having had lots of positive feedback from supervisors and employees.

Last term we completed our CBL program at Cockburn Gateways. This term we are excited to be heading out west to Fremantle, to see the day to day hustle and bustle in a busy precinct. With all of our ASDAN programs coming to a close, our students should be so proud of the effort and work they have put in to complete all of their modules. Their work ethic and standard has been extremely high and it reflects in their portfolios. A massive congratulations to all of our students!
Last but not least we are looking forward to our end of year celebrations as LESC always celebrates with a bang!
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the last term for this year. On Week 8 of last term, we had our camp at Pinjarra and it was certainly an unforgettable experience. Students got to try their hand on the high ropes course, participated in team building games and learned navigating skills. We also went to the Reds Zoo and learned about different animals and the ongoing conservation efforts to prevent them from extinction. We were so enthralled by the opportunity to interact with some of the animals. The highlight was certainly the Tasmanian Devil presentation. It was great to see our students expressing themselves so positively, showing mutual respect, demonstrating their love for the environment and just enjoying the day.

This term has also seen us commence our work experience placements, and we are extremely proud of how well each student has transitioned to their workplace roles. We have students working across a variety of industry areas including retail, warehousing and community services. Our wonderful students demonstrated great work readiness skills by ensuring they looked presentable and proactively set up their work folder going through their checklist prior to leaving school. The ASDAN Workright program has certainly given them the opportunity to learn many useful skills such as teamwork, safety, punctuality and timeliness and developing respectful relationship. It is heart-warming to see our students learning to generalise those skills in their new work sites. Here are some photos from our camp and work experience program.

From the ESC 3 team – Ms Parwani, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Mahalingam, Mrs Hales and Mrs Shivers
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the last term for this year! At the beginning of term, our students commenced work experience placements, and we are so proud of how well each student has transitioned to their workplace roles.
We have students working across a variety of industries including horticulture, warehousing, manufacturing and retail. They are attending work each Wednesday and looking very professional in their fancy new workplace shirts! We also began our CBL trips to Fremantle. The boys are catching public transport into Fremantle, and have used maps to find places such as the Fremantle Hospital, Library, Markets and Information Centre.

It is going to be a mad dash to the end of the school year so we had better buckle up. "Stay tuned" for some more adventures to finish the year with ESC 4.
Miss Arndt, Miss Hamel, Mrs Maunder, Ms Riley
Mathematics: This term, the majority of my Year 7 Students have dedicated themselves to practising their multiplication tables, skip counting and other relevant mathematical concepts. Each maths lesson begins with ‘warm-up’ exercises which allows for pre-requisite skills taught previously to be revised prior to the introduction of new concepts. The other cohort of students investigated the concept of number sense in greater depth using the number line approach at various levels of difficulty. As money maths was one of our priority skill areas for this term, students explored working with different values of coins and notes and using their prior knowledge of skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to add simple amounts of money. The set-up of a “classroom supermarket” added a practical dimension to their comprehension of various components of money skills. These included using shopping catalogues to practise essential shopping skills and sound economic management such as revising their individual shopping lists (separating needs from wants) as well as, receiving and giving change while making payments for their items. Some students have extended their mathematical skills development to more advanced domains (for example: partitioning four-digit, three-digit, and two-digit numbers).
English: My Year 7 students have been busy this term exploring a wide range of texts aimed at developing their reading fluency towards becoming intentional, purposeful and active readers. Students have had ample opportunities to practise their creative writing, punctuation, spelling skills and increased their participation in phonics activities. As part of their morning routines in literacy, each student regularly practised their sight words to grow their vocabulary and wrote about their feelings under the instructional guidance of staff. Such a staff-student collaboration in the learning environment has been invaluable in monitoring the progress of individual students, diagnosing current needs to inform future planning and providing support as needed. Participating in creative writing on different topics relating to the spring season increased their appreciation and consciousness of the rebirth that takes place around us in spring as nature seems to wake up and rejuvenate after going dormant in the winter months. Students also brainstormed and wrote about their favourite food and places in the community (e.g., school, home, cinema/movie, etc). Each student proudly displayed their work in the classroom.
Bush Ranger
The Year 7.1 students have been busy exploring different conservation projects at school. They have been learning about the different kitchen wastes and the best approaches to recycle them. One approach that interested them and which they investigated in further detail, is the use of earthworms in environmental conservation. As part of their research, students watched YouTube videos of earthworm farms and the use of ‘worm juice’/’worm wee’ as valuable fertilizers for plants. This background information motivated students to learn about the biology of earthworms (including its life cycle) as a whole class. Students also investigated how to make a simple earthworm bin and the provision of nourishing and non-toxic diet for their wellbeing and sustenance.
In ESC 6 we cannot believe we are half way through the term already! We have had a busy start to the term with some fun events and lots of learning. We have enjoyed having a student EA in our room on her practical placement, Ms Pan. Thank you Ms Pan for helping us out over the last few weeks. We think you will be a great EA!
In Week 1 we enjoyed going to our first whole campus assembly with both Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC to farewell the year 12s. Then in Week 2 we enjoyed our first Interschool Education Support South Network Sports Carnival. We participated in a range of events including leader ball, races, flag relays, tag, drawing, and javelin. We were very proud of the way all of our girls conducted themselves on the day, with sportsmanship, friendliness and teamwork. Congratulations to Jade, who won the drawing competition and won a participation medal on the day.
In maths, we have been refocusing on our addition and subtraction strategies, such as using a number line, and counting on from the bigger number. We have also been working on functional measurement skills including selecting the correct sized clothing and footwear. In English we have been progressing our recount skills by using new templates to record our weekend news. We are developing our sentence construction and writing skills. In Guided Reading we have focused on using a checklist to determine if a book is fiction or non-fiction, and then recorded a fact and an opinion about the book that we read. We also look for different types of words in the text, to develop our vocabulary and word knowledge.
The students have really enjoyed Science, where we are learning about the Solar System. We are using a song to help us remember all the planets, and we have picked a planet to sing and dance to. The girls do an amazing job at their recall of the planets now and we have lots of fun in science lessons!
We are learning more and more about being ourselves, and the importance of determining and communicating our needs, wants, likes and dislikes as part of Person Centred Planning. We have created mind maps with various pictures of things that make up our identities. We love celebrating each other’s strengths and enjoying the diversity in our room.
We have also enjoyed going to Leeming Forum for our Community Based Learning program. It is fantastic to see our students develop their skills in the community and use things they have learnt in the classroom outside of the school environment. Our students work hard to demonstrate the USTAR values at all times, including on CBL, and as such they are excellent ambassadors for our school.
The girls are looking forward to Leeming’s Got Talent which is coming up soon. They are working together to create their acts. All the students in ESC6 are looking forward to Week 10 when we will host assembly for the first time. We are working on a dance performance and can’t wait to show it to you!
Congratulations to our Star Award winner, Anisha, for a great start to Term 4. Thank you to our EAs – Miss V, Ms Musson and Mrs Bregger for being the USTARs that you are and helping us everyday.

The ESC 7 students have started this busy term with a bang and have settled in amazingly with having a new teacher. It has been wonderful to see the friendships and special bonds the students in this class share, and the way everyone looks out for one another. This term, one of our highlights has been going to the ESSN Sports Carnival. At the carnival, students participated in leader ball, tunnel ball, tag rugby, netball, running races, turbo javelin, high jump, flags, and a fine motor drawing comp. Everyone especially enjoyed the hot dogs and ice creams.
During Mathematics lessons this term, we are focusing on money, recognising and adding collections to make small purchases when playing rotation games. In Person Centred Planning lessons, we have been learning about different emotions and things that can happen that make us feel a certain way. We have been having lots of discussions about what we can do with these feelings and ways we can regulate ourselves when we are faced with uncomfortable emotions.

Kaya noonakort (hello everyone).
Another busy term, jam packed with many diverse learning experiences.
We welcomed Jaimee Coles to our dynamic team of educators and the staff and students warmly embraced Miss Coles into our class family.
Together we have been expanding our communication skills, to include Auslan finger-spelling and key word signs. We enjoy playing instruments and practising our songs in Noongar language. Working hard to polish our performances ready for Family Day on the 21st of November. The students absolutely amaze us with their ability to recall Noongar language and perform Auslan language. Moorditj! (strong).
Students attended and participated brilliantly at the ESSN Sport Carnival at Atwell College. While Liam and Riley attended a four-day, Bush Ranger Leadership Camp, at Geraldton. Students voted for 2023 Student Councillors, and we anticipate the results announcement.

This term, students travelled to Bull Creek shopping Centre on CBL and are to be commended on displaying the schools PBS values. Students listened and engaged respectfully, they moved around the Centre, located and purchased shopping items with a high level of self -responsibility. Students worked well in teams to achieve their tasks, walk safely, cross roads and travel on the bus. Outstanding!
First Aid is the focus in Bush Rangers this term. Students in Year 8 are learning to identify an emergency, seek help from staff and emergency services, locate first aid equipment and the school emergency meeting place. We are looking forward to sharing this learning with Constable Care, First Aid Puppet Show and St Johns, First Aid incursions scheduled for Weeks 5 and 6.
Lastly, SAVE the DATE. FishAbility has been rescheduled to Thursday 8th December from 10-1.00pm. We are hoping for a large family turn out to celebrate the end of 2022.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our amazing and dedicated team of educators - Hailey Louise, Chanel Xavier, Luca Farmer and Jaimee Coles.
Thank you and boordawan
Lorraine Vann
What an amazing start to our last term of Year 7! I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone, and how much we’ve achieved together. Term 4 has already kept us extremely busy with many fun events. In Week 2, Chris and Connor enjoyed a Bush Ranger boy’s camp with other students within the centre. The rest of ESC9 travelled to Atwell College for the ESSN Athletics Carnival and participated in a range of sporting activities.
This term in Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS), we have been learning about History and past and present. We have been focusing on different toys, transportation and schooling, and learning to compare the past and present. We loved bringing in our own favourite toys from the present, and observing, discussing and recording the similarities and differences between our much loved toys and devices from the present, and more simple toys from the past.
The results are in for our annual ESC9 AFL tipping competition and the winner for 2022 was…DRUM ROLL… Maleyk! Maleyk won a canteen voucher for finishing on top of the ladder with the highest amount of points.
We are looking forward to finishing our term 4 CBL program to Leeming Forum, which has brought new and exciting challenges with our community skills and travel training.
We are excited to finish the term on an exciting and positive note with Leeming’s Got Talent and the PBS Family Day, which will be jam packed with fun water based activities. Bring it on!!
Miss Gage
It has been a fast paced beginning to the last term of the school year! These students have been busy in Mathematics, coding Beebots and creating symmetrical masterpieces. As part of Work Skills, they have been consolidating their knowledge of safety procedures, how to spot hazards and what protective gear is needed. The ESSN carnival was a blast! Our students represented Leeming SHS ESC and made some new friends at the same time! We completed our ASDAN Modules and will receive our certificates very soon.

I am so pleased with their progress already and I can’t wait to see what the final weeks of Year 8 brings!
ESC 10 Team
Ms Knox, Miss Russell, Ms Palma and Mrs T-J
Wow!! Who can believe it’s already Term 4? The year has flown by and everyone in ESC11 has had an awesome time so far, working hard and building friendships that will be remembered for years to come. During this term, we finished up our buddy sessions with Notre Dame and all the boys have absolutely loved spending time with their buddies and sharing a little about their interesting lives. We concluded the sessions by making our buddies some thank you cards for everything they have helped us with, which the Notre Dame students were very appreciative of.
Also, this term, we have made the first steps towards designing and building our very own space buggies which we will construct using recycled materials from around the house. This has coincided with our topic of forces and movement which we have been learning about in Science. In Health we have looked at healthy eating, analysing the different food groups and learning how to design our own healthy meals which we will be cooking later in the term. Everyone in ESC11 has shown a tremendous amount of resilience and progression throughout the year and we are all very excited now we’re in the final stretch! Especially with our Year 9 camp fast approaching.
Mr Calasse and Team ESC11
This term is just flying by so quickly. Can’t believe that we are half way through Term 4! ESC 12 students concluded their visit to Notre Dame for PE in Week 3. Everybody worked with enthusiasm, and showed great perseverance in completing challenges and developing their gross motor skills. The students were awarded certificates from their Notre Dame buddies. What great teamwork demonstrated there!

During Bush Rangers sessions, the school nurse, Ms Kitak, visited ESC 12 to teach first aid and give CPR. She went through the acronym ‘DRSABCD’. The students looked for danger, checked for response, sent someone for help, checked that airways were clear and checked if the person was breathing. If the patient was not breathing, they gave CPR. Ms Kitak demonstrated how to give CPR and the students practiced rescusitation on their dummies. It was definitely a very enriching experience during the session.

In Art, the students created paintings of a night galaxy which look absolutely breathtaking and are worthy of framing. They also made creepy spiders for Halloween. A big thank you to Ms McPierzie and Mrs Kaiser for such engaging art lessons.

CBL sessions started in Week 3. Students have been practising road crossing skills, using public transport and checking the itinerary for bus numbers, train lines and scheduled times. They demonstrated safe and appropriate behaviours in the community and completed given tasks at Cockburn Gateways. They also practised money skills while ordering lunch and kept the receipt and change in their wallets. The students explored the shops to find items on a list and went to Coles and Woolworths to check for prices of given fruits and vegetables on worksheets.
ESC 12 and ESC 17 have been participating in boys and girls groups during Protective Behaviours to learn more about healthy friendships, changes during puberty and keeping good hygiene. Great achievement. You are all USTARS for demonstrating Unity, Self-Responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement and Respect.
Deepika Khosla
Term 4 was another whirlwind term and the students in ESC 13 have been very busy.
As part of our ASDAN Out in the Community program, the Year 11 cohort practised their travel training skills, journeying into Perth by train to visit the Perth Museum – Boola Bardip in Week 2. The students spent several hours exploring the museum and its varied, interactive exhibitions. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a great day out and the students were excellent ambassadors for the school. Another newsworthy event from earlier in the term was the ESSN Sports Carnival at Atwell College. It was great to see the students interacting with students from other schools and participating in the fun sporting events. Week 5 was a big week for the Year 12’s with their final school assembly, hosted by the amazing Year 11 students. The assembly was a resounding success, and it was happy, final celebration of the Year 12 students’ school journey.

As we progress through the remainder of Term 4, students are working hard to complete all their academic subjects in time for our end of year camp to Lake Leschenaultia in Week 8.
Rebecca Pumfrey
ESC13 and ESC14 enjoyed visiting the WA Museum Boola Bardip this term. It was a great opportunity to see exhibits about biodiversity, dinosaurs, and much more! Below are some quotes from our students describing what they enjoyed most about their visit.
My favourite part in the museum was the underwater section about Megalodon, a shark that lived over a million years ago - Jake

Mrs Megrail and Team
It has been an absolute pleasure teaching our Year 12 students this past year. The time has flown by so fast, It's hard to believe that our school year is coming to an end. Our final term has been a very busy one with students wrapping up their graduating year. Each and every one of them have been exceptional at navigating their last year at school.
Our final week will be jam packed with fun, with a trip to Rottnest for the day, a lunch at FOMO in Fremantle, and a day of games and goodbyes at school. We are all super excited for our fun week but, we are also going to miss our Year 12 students as they set out on their new exciting adventure as adults. We wish each and every one of you a bright, safe and happy future.
Well, what a busy start to the term we have had in ESC 17. Just when we thought we might have been ready to wind down towards the end of the year, we have only gotten busier.
The students have been working very hard in class, writing stories, learning about different countries and landmarks around the world and learning about the way different objects move in Science. The beginning of this term also brought an end to the Notre Dame program. The students were presented with certificates from their buddies for all their hard work over the previous 8 weeks.
With only five weeks to go we look forward to our upcoming Year 9 camp to Dwellingup Adventure camp. We are also enjoying the time we have together, as we do not know where we will all be next year. As always, I would like to thank my staff and parents in ESC 17 for always being so supportive. I look forward to the exciting activities we have planned for the final few weeks of school, before a well-earned break.
Thank you,
Jack Drennan – ESC 17 Teacher

Notre Dame Program 2022
This year, many Year 10 students and all Year 9 students were involved in the Notre Dame Physical Education Program. We had an amazing group of Notre Dame teaching students, who took our Leeming students for 1 on 1 Physical Education sessions across 10 weeks. Students developed their skills in a range of sports, as well as sportsmanship, teamwork and socialisation.
Leeming students and staff travelled to the University of Notre Dame every Friday, for 1 hour. The Notre Dame students prepared individualised sessions for our students and recorded their progress throughout their time at the University. Our students were involved in activities such as cricket, soccer, footy, gymnastics, modified golf, navigation and scavenger hunts. Each partnership team also created a ‘handshake’ that they performed at the start and end of each activity.
Leeming would like to extend a massive thank you to the University of Notre Dame, especially Ben Piggott, Mark Claydon and all of the 3rd year students. Our Leeming students were thrilled to be involved in this program, not only being involved in physical activity, but creating relationships with new people. We already look forward to 2023!

Upcoming events
Term 4 is off to a flying start. We concluded the Notre Dame program in Week 2 and have now started a program on Fridays with Special Olympics. They come to our school and run various physical education activities, focussing on fundamental movement skills and modified game play. Week 7 is the Cricket carnival which we are all very excited for. Sports Leaders will head off on their Leadership camp at Rottnest in Week 9, which will be co-hosted by the Stephen Michael Foundation.
The term is already zooming past us. We look forward to the exciting upcoming weeks of sport!

Congratulations to Jack Gartrell on receiving the Employee of the Month award. Jack is a diligent worker at Willetton Community Garden. He is very proud of the produce that he has grown over the semester and has harvested these vegetables and taken them home.
Our Year 10 students have had a fantastic start to the work experience program. They have been resilient with this new, busy day and are enjoying the challenge. They have another 5 weeks in these workplaces, finishing on Wednesday, 7th December.

We will soon be saying goodbye to our graduates, it has been a pleasure to assist these students in the Workplace Learning program, we wish them well.
TRAFFIC GRADY CLOSE
The Melville Council Rangers have notified us that they will be patrolling Grady Close for cars that are parked illegally.
The signs in Grady Close are being changed in the next few weeks to prevent parking on the grass or road verge.
This is following a review of safety issues in the local area and is to prevent bottlenecks and reduced view of the footpath.
VAPING
Do you know what they’re vaping?
Leeming SHS ESC, like many other schools, has seen a recent increase in young people vaping.
E-cigarettes, or ‘vapes’, are not safe for young people. They come in many shapes and sizes and can be hard to spot as they can look like everyday items including highlighters, pens or USB memory sticks.
Key vaping facts
- Many vapes contain nicotine. Nicotine can cause long-lasting negative effects on young people’s brain development, including impaired learning ability and altered mood, and can increase the risk of depression and anxiety.
- Vapes can contain the same harmful chemicals found in cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray, which can lead to serious lung diseases.
- Young people who vape are 3 times as likely to take up smoking cigarettes.
The laws around selling vapes
It is reported that young people often purchase vapes online, from retail stores or from friends and contacts in the community. However, it is illegal in WA to sell e-cigarette devices and nicotine vaping products to anyone regardless of age, unless they are prescribed by a doctor for smoking cessation purposes and obtained with a prescription from a pharmacy. You can report suspected illegal sales of vapes to the Department of Health by emailing TobaccoPolicy@health.wa.gov.au.
Talk to your child about vaping
It’s important to take the time to talk to your child about the risks of vaping. Try to start the conversation in a relaxed easy-going way, and remember your goal is to have a conversation, not deliver a lecture. Importantly, get the facts at www.education.wa.edu.au
