We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of the land and its waters and pay respect to their elders, past, present and emerging.
It has been a different type of term as we have all dealt with the impact of the COVID Pandemic. Although there has been continued staff and student absences across the school this term, educational programs have continued and students have enjoyed rich learning experiences through classroom programs and activities including the soccer carnival, Leeming Link, Reconciliation Week, and Community Based Learning and Workplace Learning programs.
I congratulate our teachers and Education Assistants who have supported students to achieve their best this semester. Reading through student reports gave me a great sense of pride in our school and students should be very proud of their achievements. Reports have been sent home this week and I am sure you will be as proud as I am of your child’s achievements.
During 27th May – 3rd June, we celebrated Reconciliation Week with a whole school poster competition using the theme “Be Brave. Make Change.” Students created beautiful art work which was displayed in the school. Congratulations to all students and staff for embracing Reconciliation Week and to the class winners of the poster competition, Mr Calasse’s year 9 class and Ms Pumphery’s year 11 class. Students are now celebrating NAIDOC week, a big thank you to Mrs Vann for sharing fabulous activities to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The NAIDOC Week theme for 2022 is Stand Up! Show Up!

The assembly on Tuesday 18th June was a great celebration of programs and achievements during the term. I thoroughly enjoyed the dance and music performances and congratulations to all the certificate winners. Photos of the soccer carnival highlighted students demonstrating our school USTAR values, in particular Teamwork. Well done to all the soccer players for representing Leeming SHS ESC so well!
Term 3 is full of exciting events including; Disco, Multicultural Day, Athletics Carnival, Notre Dame Sports program and Pop Up Shops. I look forward to enjoying these events as a school community.
Thank you to all my wonderful staff, I hope you have a relaxing well deserved holiday break.

SCHOOL BASED INMUNISATION PROGRAM - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
School Based Immunisation Program – using VaccinateWA
The School Based Immunisation Program (SBIP) is a well-established service that offers National Immunisation Program immunisations to students in Years 7 and 10.
This year, the SBIP will also offer COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible students in Years 7 through to 12 at selected schools as part of the regular schedule of immunisations based within schools.
The VaccinateWA system is now to be used by parents/carers to complete the vaccination consent form in order to consent to their children/dependents receiving vaccinations whilst at school. (Note: VaccinateWA is not being used to book appointments for the School Based Immunisation Program).
To provide consent for vaccination, the first step is to register the child/dependant on VaccinateWA. Log into your VaccinateWA account and follow the steps to “Add or manage dependants”. If you do not have a VaccinateWA account, you will need to create one for yourself first.
Step by step information for using VaccinateWA is available on the HealthyWA website. Please call 13 COVID (13 26843) if you have any technical issues with VaccinateWA.
If you are unable to complete the online consent form - and you have not already handed in a paper consent form – the school will have forms available for you to use. If the information you provide needs to be clarified, you may be contacted by a staff member from the vaccination team.
If you have already completed and returned a paper consent form, the SBIP team are currently uploading the information into the VaccinateWA system. This process may take several weeks, and you will receive an email confirming once it has been done.

Valued Lives Foundation School to Employment Pathways Pilot Project
This semester, the Valued Lives team under the guidance of Clare Gibellini*, (Project Lead), have been working with our year 12 and year 13 students to explore their career aspirations. The year 13 students commenced at the beginning of the year, with our year 12 students commencing mid-way through term 2.
The School to Employment Pathways Pilot Project, funded by the State government, supports students in their final year of education to commence the employment discovery process of what work means to them.
As a part of the Discovery process, the students have been meeting with practitioners in their chosen areas of career interest to conduct informational interviews. These have included people in the Hair and Beauty, Community Services - Advocate and Support Worker, Hospitality - Café Business Owner, and Transport industries.
When asked, “What is the most important thing you have learnt in the Valued Lives program?” the students responded by saying:
“In valued lives we have enjoyed learning new activities each week. We like how it is a safe space to talk about things you want to talk about, and no one feels left out, everyone is included.” – Year 12 group comment
“I really appreciate getting professional advice about how to advocate for people with disability. Being an ASD advocate means learning the language of advocacy and opening eyes past self.” – Jayelan Lee
“Getting a job that makes me happy.” – Tania Costa Amado

A message from Clare Gibellini:
“I want to sincerely thank the staff and students at Leeming for embracing the concept of this pilot program, and for their invaluable help in designing what could be a hugely valuable program for future students across WA. Every student has made a massive contribution to the program, and the energy and effort they have put into its success is phenomenal. I have so enjoyed seeing each and every student grow in confidence, and learning how to dream big for their futures. The next steps are going to be amazing.”
The company name could not be more befitting as Valued Lives Foundation truly embodies the elements of person centred planning in their approach to working with individuals at Leeming ESC. A big thank you to Clare from Lou FP and team. I can’t wait to see what will unfold in next semester.
Louisa Franceschini-Piil – Transitions and Pathways Coordinator
*About Clare Gibellini... I am a board director at People with Disability Australia, and a member of the WA State Government Western Australian Disability Advisory Council. I’ve just recently returned from the United Nations Conference of State Parties, an international conference that brings together Governments and Non Government Organisations from around the world to talk about how various countries adhere to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). It was held at the UN Headquarters in New York. I spoke about the importance of, and barriers to employment people with disability face. I’m also a person with a disability myself (I’m autistic, among other things J), and in May I did a TedX talk about microbusiness creation for people with a disability.
Weeks 6 -10 at Leeming Link has been a fun, social and busy time.
Ms Stewart and myself have enjoyed watching the students interacting with one another and trying different activities.
Activities students participated in: Bingo, Planet Earth Art, Designing a WA Flag, Origami Chatterboxes, Signing Chinese Whispers, enjoying homemade Soup, and NAIDOC Day Dot Painting.

We look forward to many more activities and opportunities for the students to participate in Term 3.
Enjoy these photos of Leeming Link in action.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
Best wishes,
Ms Stewart and Ms Vangi JJ

What a fantastic term we have had in ESC 4. We were finally able to go out on fortnightly CBL excursions to Bull Creek Shopping Centre. Our class of boys have successfully demonstrated they were able to identify the correct bus number, hail the bus, tag on and off with their SmartRider, cross the road safely and most importantly, order their lunch! We had so much fun on our CBL excursions and look forward to exploring different shopping centres next term.
We are sadly finishing our weekly work experience sessions at Striker Indoors Sports and Fitness Centre. Next term the students will get an insight to different work places and industries they might attend for work experience in term 4. Throughout the semester, everyone displayed wonderful teamwork and self-responsibility at Strikers throughout the semester, and we are so proud of our class!

From all of us in ESC 4, we hope you have a wonderful term 2 break!
Miss Arndt, Miss Hamel, Mrs Maunder & Miss Riley
Mathematics: My Year 7.1 mathematics lessons for this term focused on teaching students about the concepts of ‘time’, ‘division of numbers’, ‘quantity’ and using a number line to solve addition problems. Students participated in a wide range of learning activities with varying degrees of difficulties according to their individual strengths, needs and prior learning. It was pleasing to observe students making gains from the variety of instructional approaches employed, including concrete representational abstract (CRA), manipulatives, multisensory and simulations. These were supplemented with authentic learning experiences which provided them with the opportunities to transfer knowledge into different contexts. Most students have learned to add coins and notes, others have been learning to add items on a shopping list and totalling the amount needed for a purchase.
English: This term, literacy activities were centred on learning sight words and engaging in various forms of writing, such as, opinion and creative essays. In one of our opinion writing tasks, the question “Do you like broccoli or hotdogs?” was posed to them. In their responses, students presented a wide range of opinions on why they preferred one to the other, the arguments for, or against, were very strong and impressive. For example, one respondent observed that “I like hotdogs because they are tasty, great flavour and of course delicious”. The opportunities to share their work with each other did not only bring to light the fact that students can learn from each other but also promoted their collaborative learning and peer tutoring skills. Students also took part in activities designed to teach them about adjectives and adverbs. They are getting better at using various adjectives and adverbs to expand their sentences and make them more colourful and interesting to read.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Bush Ranger Cadet Programs
This term, students have dedicated their time to learning about the values of ‘Teamwork and Unity’. Students explored ways of demonstrating ‘Kindness’ and ‘Helping Hands’. Each student brainstormed various ways to show kindness to others and different ways to use helping hands both within the classroom and outside the classroom. Their hard work and efforts resulted in students designing posters titled ‘Pot of Kindness’ and 'Helping Hands'. They proudly displayed in the classroom to keep every class member constantly alive to the importance of these values.
Bush Rangers: The content covered under the Bush Ranger course have expanded students’ understanding of the concepts of ‘Australian fauna’ conservation. Each week, students conducted research on an animal of their choice and undertook observational trips around the school to consolidate on their research efforts. Having completed their information gathering session, students returned to class to write individual reports on their animals. They also labelled the parts of their animals and each student used recycled materials to make models of their chosen animals. For example, Echidna, Kookaburra and Emu.
I congratulate my students for having had a very successful and productive semester.
Mrs Enoma, Ms Temple, Ms Banks, and Ms Broadhurst.
We can’t believe that we are halfway through the year! This term our class loved learning about Australian animals at Bush Rangers. We have learnt lots about Australian wildlife and loved watching ‘Wild Times’ videos with the Irwins to learn about some of the animals at Australia Zoo. In art, we have been very busy working on creations for the Pop Up Shops that will take place in term 3. We are very excited to share what we have been making with everyone.
We have become authors this term, learning all about the different elements that make up a narrative. We created an online book to publish stories. We have begun practising crossing the road, in preparation for starting our community based learning next term. We are learning about different community signs and safety.
We loved pyjama day this term! We wish it was pyjama day every week!
Some of our students have reflected on their favourite part of term 2 below:
Jaylene: I like home economics and cooking different things each week.
Ruby R: I like HASS learning about Australian states and the world continents. I also like home economics.
Ruby E: I like the alphabet song at the end of DI. I also liked pyjama day!
Sarah: I liked pyjama day! I also like going to cooking class.
Jade: I liked going to Design and Technology for options.

At the end of this term we are sad to say good bye to our fabulous EA, Miss Sutherland as she takes off on a new career venture. We wish her all the best! Thanks for all your help this semester Miss S, you will be missed.
Miss Blackburn, Ms Musson, Miss Sutherland and Mrs Bregger.
All the students and staff have had a fantastic time during a busy term 2. We have started CBL again by catching the bus to Bull Creek shopping centre and practising our travel training skills. We visited Woolworths to purchase ingredients to cook our international recipes, 'Thai noodles' and 'Chili Con Carne', both turning out very tasty according to our taste testers.
In Sport, the students have been learning to play soccer and scoring many goals. At Music, the students have tried a range of musical instruments, including the keyboard and guitar. During Bush Ranger lessons, we have been learning about what happens to our wildlife if plastic is left to pollute our oceans. Language has been a key focus this term, with students sharing their knowledge of languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, German, and Noongar Aboriginal. We have been teaching each other key phrases and counting to 10.
A big thank you to the wonderful team, Ms Smith, Mrs Chamberlain, and Ms Jones, for all your help.
Enjoy the holidays,
Ms Chambers, Ms Smith, Mrs Chamberlain, Ms Jones
We Acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as Traditional Custodians of the Land, which we are on. We pay respect to their Elders, past, present, and emerging; acknowledge their stories, and traditions, and celebrate the rich and continuing cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people.
Kaya (hello), the classroom has been immersed in Auslan key sign and Aboriginal Education this term. The students greet staff and peers with Auslan finger spelling and have been learning to sign an Acknowledgement to Country. We celebrated Reconciliation Week, encompassing Sorry Day, the Mabo Decision and finished the term with a fun day of NAIDOC activities. We shared many stories to deepen our knowledge on Aboriginal history, encompassing the stolen generation and land rights. As part of a, school wide, Reconciliation Poster Competition, the class created a deadly informative poster sharing the words from our stories. We have enjoyed singing the Noongar welcome song- ‘Wanjoo’ learning many new Noongar language words and Auslan signs. The students have embraced learning the Noongar and Auslan language and I am amazed at how quickly they have picked up both languages. Moorditj! (strong).
In term 1, students focused on their identity and in term 2, discovered their place within their family structure. Family (Moort) was researched and celebrated with students completing their Family Tree interview and poster. The class enjoyed searching the world to locate places where students and family members where born. Students shared family information to collect data and graph results to reflect similarities and differences between families.

In Bush Rangers, we collected and surveyed the litter around the school, analysed the types of materials to decide if they are helpful or harmful to the environment. We have looked at where the litter goes and how it can end up in the water ways. Our focus has been on what we can do to prevent the litter harming the marine environment, animals and humans. Unfortunately the planned year 8 Fishability excursion, had to be postponed due to bad weather, however, is being rescheduled. More information about the excursion will be announced next term.
Technology has been a huge focus with the class, practising logging on and engaging with the Connect and Seesaw online platforms. Students have demonstrated an increase of independence to complete a variety of activities with confidence. James is the class technology assistant inputs the daily PBS USTAR value awards (acknowledging students and staff) when displaying (Unity, Self-responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement or Respect), into the interactive app. Riley tallies the overall points and in the last week of term, students select from a range of class prizes, staring in the order of highest point. Class staff are impressed with students engagement with the USTAR values and their ability to reflect on themselves and others to recognise values being displayed and acknowledge each other and our staff members.
We also wish to highlight and thank Liam, for being a tremendous role model and wonderful supporter of his peers in the class. Liam you are a shining example of the schools values USTAR!!!! Thank you.
A massive congratulations to each student. Outstanding achievement!
I would like to also acknowledge and thank our amazing and dedicated team, Chanel Xavier, Hailey Louise and Aaron Cocks.
Enjoy the holidays!
Mrs Vann, Mrs Louise, Mr C and Mrs Xavier.
Term 2 has just flown by, it’s almost hard to believe we are on the cusp of semester 2! This term, ESC 9 have focused on Aboriginal Education in our HASS classes.
On the 26th of May, it was National Sorry Day, and the following day was the beginning of Reconciliation Week. ESC9 learned about the history and meaning of these two very important dates, and how it is a time to celebrate and build on positive and respectful relationships and connections between Australians and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This term in Health, we participated in the Peaceful Kids program. Over the 8-week program, we have learned a range of mindfulness and wellbeing activities to help alleviate stress, anxiety and worry. We learned the power of journaling, breathing, and just noticing our thoughts and a range of positive thinking and coping strategies.
In HASS, we focused on the flags of Australia, including the Australian National, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and WA flag. We know the colours of the flags, and what the different parts and elements represent. In Maths, we have been focusing on skip counting, which leads us into multiplication. ESC 9 students LOVE our maths games and hands-on activities we have been playing to consolidate our learning.
Happy holidays everyone! I am looking forward to seeing everyone in person for our Semester 2 parent meetings.
Miss Gage, Ms Sajjay, Ms Mitchell and Miss Chatfield.
It's the end of another term! We are all looking forward to the much needed two week break! It will give everyone a chance to rest and recharge our batteries before a very busy Term 3! Below is a wonderful picture of Chris Manning who has been nominated as a School Leader... Congratulations Chris!!
We’ve been experimenting with energy in Science, playing Soccer in Phys Ed, and investigating cities abroad in Digitech. We have also been creating beautiful sounds in Music.

On CBL, these confident students navigate themselves responsibly around a shopping centre and have been working hard at improving their Teamwork skills in the community. We have been learning about recycling and being mindful about marine debris as part of Bush Rangers. Check out some photos below!

Stay tuned to hear all about our adventures next term :)
Ms Knox, Miss Russell, Mrs T-J and Ms Palma
One of the many amazing experiences we have had this term, was visiting Kings Park. As part of a Bush Rangers excursion, we explored the beautiful Botanical Gardens and identified some of the native Australian fauna on display. We have also had a focus on Dreamtime stories in HASS, where we learnt how birds get their colours and the story of the Rainbow Serpent. We then tapped into our creative side and created our very own Rainbow Serpent.
The boys are currently in the process of taking part in the Australian Reading Challenge, where the aim is to read or listen to 14 books before September.
This term has been wonderful for everyone in ESC 11! We have been working hard and we have faced a few challenges along the way, and, it has been extremely pleasing to see all members of our class persevere and come together to help each other.
Mr Calasse, Mrs Bruns, Mrs Harcourt and Mrs Hewer.
We are heading towards the end of a successful term. ESC 12 students and staff have worked tirelessly and have been resilient to the challenges and changes in staff throughout the term.
Students participated in CBL during weeks 6 to 10, geared up with raincoats and umbrellas to practise their travel training. In HASS and Bush Rangers, students have looked at Australian seasons and Aboriginal seasons. To plan CBL excursions, students used the Bureau of Meteorology website to keep a record of weekly weather updates. Students have also been investigating and making presentations on Natural and Man-made landforms and disasters in Australia.

In PCP and Work skills, students have been identifying skills and qualities required by different staff, e.g. Principal, Deputy, Chaplain, School officer, Teacher and Education Assistants. Students have interviewed staff members to find out their job title, skills and qualities required for their job. They found out about their qualifications and what they enjoy the most in their career choice. Students have already rolled up their sleeves to get ready to plan for "Pop Up Shops” ready for term 3.

ESC 12 is getting ready with their Enterprise Project in Term 2. They will be doing Decoupage (the art or craft of decorating objects with paper cut-outs) on clay pots and recycled glass jars for sale at the Pop Up Shops. In Work skills, students have been practising safe manual handling while lifting boxes and heavy items.
Mrs Khosla, Mrs Owen, Ms Brewer and Ms Blacklock
Wow, what a busy term it has been! With everyone now looking very much forward to the holiday break, it is a perfect time to sit back and reflect on all the activities the students in ESC 13 have been engaging in this term.
A large focus for the term has been the return to Community Based Learning (CBL). Through our CBL visits, students have been able to put into practice the life skills learning they have been engaging in at school.
In Maths, this has involved the handling of money, determining how to pay for purchases and what change to expect when buying items. Students have also been practising using public transport and accessing the TransPerth journey planner, to work out how to get to a chosen destination. In Literacy, students have been learning about rules in the community, and how different places in our community have different rules. Students have shown their understanding of rules, by demonstrating socially appropriate behaviours when out in the community, interacting with members of the public appropriately, using manners, and asking for assistance politely and respectfully. Students have generalised their SoSafe learning, by being able to identify safe places and safe people to ask for help when in different community venues. And finally, within our Zones of Regulation framework, students have been able to problem solve what to do when things go wrong out on CBL and develop a plan of action to take, such as call home or ask for help.
Well done to all the students in ESC 13. You have all worked exceptionally hard this term and deserve a big rest over the school holidays.
It was a privilege to host the assembly with the year 11 cohort this term. We were grateful that the assembley could take place in the theatre where our friends and family could once again join us in person. Well done to all students for your participation and professionalism on the day.
Students have focused on improving their basic first aid knowledge and, learning how to deal with emergency situations during Bush Ranger lessons. Since our visit from Saint John Ambulance, students have continued to consolidate their skills through role plays. Most can now recall and demonstrate each step involved with DR ABC without prompting. After watching PowerPoint presentations and videos about common injuries that occur, students are practising by recalling steps to take to manage casualties in different scenarios. While some students have focused on identifying items found in a first aid kit and learning about their uses, others, have been practising bandage application for minor injuries. Our next step is to become proficient in identifying what situation constitutes an emergency, and what steps need to be taken when contacting emergency services.

“My favourite thing is learning about CPR because I might need it when I’m out in the real world” Jake

Wow, what a busy and productive end to the term we have had here in ESC 15. We have put so much hard work into our two ASDAN units, Business Enterprise and Money Progression. Students have displayed so much great evidence of their newly learned skills and development.
Our students have shown amazing entrepreneurial skills during their Business Enterprise unit. They worked at dehydrating lemons, packaged them beautifully and sold them with some support to staff at school. Next term we are looking at producing a variety of dehydrated fruit such as limes and oranges. We can’t wait to see what the team come up with next!

Through the Preliminary Literacy Unit we have finished completing our E-books that displaying our personal qualities and skills and focus on our future career choices. During Preliminary Maths, students have been busy making purchases at the shops and practically exploring with measurement, identifying what units they should use and how much to use in their cooking.
During the end of this term, in Bush Rangers, we have focused on the six Noongar Seasons. We worked in pairs on an art project where each group focused on a season, the natural changes to the environment and weather changes to each season. The art work reflected these changes and looks so bright and beautiful on the classroom wall. We all learned a lot from studying the Noongar seasons . For example, how the changes to each season strongly links to the months of the year and how the Aboriginal people are sustainably taking care of their land.
We have been learning so much during our regular trips into the community through our CBL program. Demonstrating perfect manners and constantly demonstrating the positive behaviours of our school values matrix. On CBL, students are developing their money handling skills and protective behaviour skills.
It has been a great term and together, we are looking forward to the holidays and the new skills we will learn in term 3.
Have a great and safe holidays everyone x

We have had a very busy term in ESC 17. Each of the students have worked very hard in class and achieved some amazing results across all subject areas.
As a class we have embarked on our first CBL outings of the year. We have been to Cockburn Gateways three times, where the students enjoyed shopping and buying their lunch.
Students have been identifying their skills and qualities, relating what they have learnt to a job they would like to do in the future. This culminated in the students interviewing a staff member from the school about the job they do. This was a great experience for each of the students and I know each staff member enjoyed interacting with each of them during the interview.
We are getting ready for our Pop Up Shop next term, making our exciting products to sell at our Flower & Flames store. You will have to wait to see the items we are going to sell!
I would like to thank my wonderful staff members Candace Botha, Kym Buchanan and Edith Murugan for being such a great help to both myself and the students this term. The Students are very lucky to have you in our class. Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support throughout the year.
Enjoy the holidays.
