Congratulations to the following senior students who have started School Based Traineeships this year:
Kye Strawbridge | Bridgestone Select |
Anna Johnson | Amberley Aged Care |
Tayla Sherrat | Buggles Childcare Centre |
Christy Newton | Good Samaritan Industries (Retail) |
Nick Leone | SJOG Hospital |
School Based Traineeships provide a wonderful opportunity for on the job training in an industry area. These students have demonstrated a very mature and responsible attitude and the feedback from employers and trainers has been very positive.
We had a great turn out to our first Parent Network meeting for the year. School Board representative Tanya Matulich provided parents with some very useful information about NDIS Local Area Coordination in WA. As of the 1st May 2019 Mission Australia will deliver LAC services to Central North Metro, South East Metro and North East Metro and AMP will deliver LAC services in the North Metro, Central South Metro, South Metro, South West, Great Southern and Inner Wheatbelt Service Areas. LAC’s can help you understand and access the NDIS, they will also help you to create, implement and review your plan. For further information, contact 1800 800 110 to be referred to your nearest NDIS office.
During our recent assembly we acknowledged Natalie Hall who has been an education assistant at Leeming SHS ESC for six years. During this time Natalie has been studying her teaching degree and next term will complete her final 10-week practicum. Natalie has been an exceptional education assistant and will make an excellent teacher, we wish Natalie all the very best in her future teaching career.
Thank you to Ms FP for organising activities during Autism Awareness week with the student council, your passion and flare has paid off with “Go Blue Day” now an annual event. Leeming Senior High School Education Support Centre and Leeming Senior High School were thrilled to have exceeded their goal of $1000 and raised over $1300 for the Autism Association of WA. It was lovely to see all students and staff from both schools involved and supporting the event together.
Students return to school on Monday 29th April. The School Development Day will be in week 6 after the long weekend on Tuesday 4th June.
Have a safe and happy holiday break.
Mrs Keran Davies
Leeming SHS ESC Community Support Project
The generosity of families in our school community has enabled practical and welcomed support to many in these first few weeks of the 2019 school year. The Board discusses the project at every meeting to ensure that we remain in touch with needs and avenues of assistance. As a reminder, the following is a list of items you might consider giving:
- Uniform items that may be no longer suitable sizes for children in your family.
- Toiletry items (soaps, combs, brushes, deodorants etc)
- Female sanitary products
- Male and Female underwear (new and packaged)
- Tinned food and other non-perishables such as crackers, noodles, spaghetti
- Tins of milo
Please hand these goods to the reception at the school. Every item given is appreciated by many at the school who find these items beyond their household budget.
Thank you very much.
Digby Claydon

It has been an amazing term for students in ESC1. They have organised fund raising events for Autism Awareness Week, to support their ASDAN studies, including the Autism Awareness Week Colouring Competition, the Uno Tournament and the “Go Blue” free dress day. Proceeds from these activities will be donated to the Autism Association of WA at a formal assembly with Leeming SHS in Term 2.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Trott for receiving the Merit Certificate for ESC1, and to Raynor Keane for achieving a personal best time in the U/20, Para 1500 metre final, in the Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney.
To encapsulate what has been an amazing term of learning, the students also ran the Centre Assembly in Week 10. I look forward to Term 2 as we commence our Community Based Learning Program to support our ASDAN studies in Money Progression and Using Transport.
Happy Holidays, Ms FP

Autism Awareness "Go Blue" Free Dress Day
Term 1 has just flown by so quickly! The students at ESC 2 have had an amazing and productive term. In English, we have been busy learning about codes of conduct in the community. Students had so much fun creating their iMovie and were very proud of their achievement. In maths we have working on our money skills. The students were given the task to plan for a party and had to calculate the cost of all the items they purchased. They had so much fun researching and developing their calculator skills.
In the last few weeks we have celebrated Harmony Day, explored conservation ideas within the school, celebrated Autism Day and had a special visit from West Coast Eagles players.
Do check into See-saw for messages and photos of all the things we do in ESC 2.
Here are some quotes from the ESC 2 students about what they think of term 1:
Ben Armstrong My highlights for term was the visit by West Coast Eagles. I also like sports, dance and gardening with Mr Zivkovic on Fridays.
Azaria Denmead I like dancing, DBL, learning to buy items at the shops and working at AYLA.
Morgan Dewhurst My highlights for this term were working with Mr Muir, Mr Zivkovic, doing Keys for Life, going to work at Fern Café and learning about Harmony Day.
Kayla Muller I like going to TAFE, the dance program, learning to count money and celebrating Harmony Day.
Josh Evans My highlights for this term was the West Coast Eagles visit. I got a signed poster. I liked working with Mrs Carter and Mrs Shivers. I also love maths especially learning to count money.
Brittany Walton My highlights this term was seeing the West Coast Eagles when they came to visit us. It was the best time of my life. It was amazing. They made my day I love them so much. I like it when I’m working with all my teachers – Mr Muir, Mrs Peter, Mrs Carter, Mrs Mac and Mrs Shivers. They are the best they make me day every time I see them. Keys for life is amazing, it’s a good experiment to learn how to drive and I’m so glad that I’m in the class with Ms Heard. She is amazing. Harmony Day Lunch is the best! It was really good when the other students bring their other foods. It was really YUMMY!!! Sports I like doing sports because it’s really fun and it’s really good to try other different sports.
Eve Morgan I like WPL at ACTIV, CBL and Harmony Day Lunch.
Ben Shaw My highlights for this this term is the dance program, making the IMovie, sports and going to work at ACTIV.
Jacob Raphael I like going on CBL, going to work in the school bus and playing soccer.

I can’t believe the term is almost behind us! What a rollercoaster of a term! The amazing students of ESC 3 have covered so much. In english we have learned about rules in different community places and the differences between rules and laws. In maths we have introduced the use of money, the value of different coins and slowly looking at change we would receive from purchasing certain items.
In Bush Rangers we have explored the qualities needed to make an effective team and put those qualities into practise by working in teams to create anti-littering posters to place around the school, as a focus on conservation.
We finally launched our first ‘Seesaw’ work sample into orbit and look forward to sharing more of our classroom ‘antics’, later in the term.
We were all very excited about meeting the Eagles players this week and although many of us wished Nic Naitanui was there too, the other players were awesome and we received many autographs and team posters.
Next week, we finish off the term by venturing to Hoyts Southlands, to enjoy ‘The Lego Movie 2’. A great way to wrap up the term and share popcorn and a laugh with our friendly neighbourhood companions of ESC 4.
Finally, it has also been great to introduce a new student to our room. Nelly has joined us and has adjusted to our classroom with maturity and great enthusiasm. He was welcomed by all his classmates and has already made some great friendships in the classroom and has proved to be a great team member. It makes me very proud to see how welcoming the students are to new classmates, relief teachers and anyone who enters the classroom. Keep up the great attitude ESC 3 and I look forward to seeing what adventures we embark on in term 2.
Teacher: “What have you enjoyed most about joining the class of ESC 3?”
Nelly “Making new friends and going to cooking.”
Kaya!!
What a fabulous term we’ve had in ESC 5! So many activities going on all the time – we’ve hardly had time to stop and take a breath.
We’ve covered an enormous range of topics such as citizenship, racism, respect and recycling to name just a few. The students are very focused and without a doubt everybody is well and truly ready for the holidays!
Skye: I can’t wait to sing Wanjoo at the Assembly!
Lily: I am getting to be independent. I am improving every day.
Aidan: I like Timmy time! (Aidan loves Maths so he can see Timmy, the therapy dog!)
Ella, Samuel and Zach from our class went on the Bush Ranger camp to Bridgetown. They had the most awesome time, putting all their Bush Ranger skills to good use.
Damien has been very busy following his own program and working extremely well to complete all assigned tasks.
And in the absence of Ms Vann all students have continued to work so well and churn out amazing work.
Below are two examples of some of these great efforts.
Skye is an amazing artist and has great recollection of concepts covered, consolidated with hands on activities |
Term 1 has been a fantastic and busy start to the new school year. My year 8.3 class have worked so hard, and definitely deserve the Easter holiday break which is fast approaching. Term 1 allowed us the opportunity to learn about and discuss special days and events such as Chinese New Year, Random Acts of Kindness Day, Earth Hour and of course Easter and ANZAC Day which will be during the break. Mid-term we learned about the traditions of St Patrick’s Day, and practiced expressing our gratitude by discussing the many things we feel lucky for.
Henry: I am lucky because I have two brothers.
Taine: I am lucky because I can listen to the radio.
Raymond: I am lucky because I migrated to Perth from Manila.
Matthew: I am lucky because I go bowling with Mum.
Ezra: I am lucky because I have a big family.
Lachy: I am lucky because I have my brother Joshua.
Karleigh: I am lucky because I have friends.
Hanna: I am lucky because I have a funny Dad.
This term we extended our CBL skills and ventured out further to Cockburn Gateways Shopping Centre using the 516 bus AND the Mandurah train line. I am so impressed with the level of maturity and independence all of my year 8 students have demonstrated during this term’s CBL program. I can’t wait to continue in term 2! The 2019 AFL season commenced, and therefore our ESC 6 footy tipping has too! Our current top 3 tippers on the ladder are Raymond, Hanna and Karleigh. GO FREO!
I hope everyone enjoys their holiday, and all families have a lovely and safe Easter together. See you all back in term 2!

ESC 8 has had an exciting term learning new skills and adapting to different kinds of situations. The students have all shown great resilience towards each other and the constant changes happening to our timetable.
I would like to welcome Mason Rasmussen , Lake Young and Mrs Rollin to our class who have joined the ESC 8 team. The students enjoyed learning and preparing for the Harmony Day celebration. They learnt about diversity, accepting people from different cultures, greetings from different countries and best of all was tasting food from different countries. The students from all the year 7 classes joined in to celebrate ‘Living in Harmony’.
Our Community Based Learning has started in full swing and the students have been busy practising crossing the road safely and went to the local shops. Science sessions have been so exciting learning about cardiovascular system and counting their own heartbeat.
At Bush Rangers they have been busy cleaning up the environment and following the code of conduct. Well done ESC 8 for completing your first term at high school and I would like to thank my awesome staff and parents for working collaboratively to make this term a successful term.

It’s been an incredible start to 2019 for ESC 9. My students constantly amaze me with their hard work and dedication to their learning. We have enjoyed CBL outings to Southlands shopping centre, worked diligently on our recycling program, shown leadership skills in Bush Rangers and loved all the yummy food in home economics.
What are you most looking forward to next term?
Harvey: ‘Going on the flying fox at camp’
Nathan: ‘Using Mathletics with my friends’
Ayrton: ‘Going to camp with my friends and the teachers’
Makenzie: ‘Getting to go on another camp with my friends’
Alyssa: ‘Going on another camp!’
Keira: ‘Hanging out with Mrs Payne in DI groups’
Nekoda: ‘Having movie night at camp’
Orlando: ‘Challenging friends in the commando course on camp’
Have a relaxing 2 week break everyone!

ESC 9 team
We have had an amazing term 1 in ESC 10, with the U Can Hatch Us program bringing lots of cuteness and joy to our classroom! The year 7.3 boys loved every minute of having the chicks with us and we had many moments of laughter and happiness watching the chicks hatch and grow. We are very sad to say goodbye!

The boys from ESC10 ventured out on our first excursion to Sculptures by the Sea in week 5. The excursion was a wonderful experience and the boys were captivated by so many of the amazing sculptures.

We are gearing up ready for the year 7 combined camp in week 4 of next term, when we will be travelling down to Point Peron. Everyone is very excited by the activities we will have the opportunity to experience. We will report back at the week 5 assembly next term!
The combined year 7 classes held a Harmony Day celebration last Friday. The event was a BIG success with students bringing in some beautiful food from a range of different countries. The students had lots of valuable conversations around celebrating our differences and how unique we all are.
A few words from the ESC 10 boys on their first term of high school:
Oscar: My first term of high school was fun but there is nothing to do at recess. I love to do woodwork in mainstream. I was a little bit nervous at the start. We went to cooking, it is so fun to go and cook. We got chicks that we could hold and play with them. The Eagles came to our school and we got signatures from the Eagles players. My thoughts on high school are it is so amazing and the best part of my life. I love doing cooking, woodwork, and holding the chicks, I love it so much. I liked dressing up on Harmony Day. The first excursion was going to Sculptures by the Sea, it was so much fun. We got to look at all of the sculptures, t was amazing. At the end of the day on Thursday we played UNO, I am the best at playing UNO. We also do footy tipping which is so much fun. On Monday after school we can do Bush Rangers and I am excited. My term was AMAZING!
Branden: I really liked my first term of high school. I like that my class is all boys. I love Thursday UNO championships and collecting the eggs from the chickens. I am really excited about camp next term. I am happy at school.
Jackson: My first term of high school I felt shy. I enjoyed doing maths. I feel less shy now and I enjoy it now. I have made a good friend Oscar. I like having classroom chicks. I named mine Maui. In the frist week of classroom footy tipping I was winning.
Nayong: In my first term of high school I was scared. I liked going to cooking and cooking chocolate cupcakes. I like playing UNO with my class. I like my teacher.
Ethan: In my first term of high school I felt not happy because I did not know anyone here. On my second day I felt happier. My favourite thing to do in high school is UNO and Kahoot.
Cam: My favourite part of my first term of high school was Harmony Day, we had food there. I like playing UNO on Thursdays. I kind of like the hard work we do, I am happy at high school and I like my teachers and friends. I really love the chicks, mine is called Penny Crnobrnja.
Joaquin: I am happy at school. I like Music and Cooking.
As always a massive thank you to the ESC 10 education assistants Mrs Buchanan and Miss T, as well as the parents and guardians of the 7.3 students, your continued support is invaluable.
Mrs Cullen
Term 1 has been a great term albeit busy as staff and students settled into the daily routines and adjusted to the range of programs. While some students are in class all week, others are completing their educational pathways off campus or in other classes. Monday is the only day we have all students in the class at the same time!
Students working through the Preliminary Math Module are currently working on budgets. In the lead up they compared banks and bank fees, learning to read the fine print and that student accounts usually don’t have as many fees as adult accounts. While some students are already working for wages part time, others are not yet earning a wage, so they are learning from one another about money, job expectations, spending and board.
Last week a group of students practised their hand-eye coordination, throwing water balloons at a target on the oval. Suspiciously, I was ‘accidently’ targeted by Levi and Ms Long while I took photographs! While this activity assists with hand-eye coordination, the focus was problem solving as students had to move closer or further away depending on their need. Students accuracy improved as they judged the distance along with their personal strength and made the necessary changes.
Select students have specific goals they have chosen to work on to improve their work skills. Such goals include paying attention and being mindful to be organised. Others are to improve their spelling or to follow a procedure. With support and encouragement, students have really tried hard to achieve their goals. While many are still working toward their initial goal, others have accomplished theirs and are moving on to the next one. It is uplifting to identify students showing determination in striving to achieve their planned goals.
Mrs Smithson is an avid reader and encourages the students in their personal reading journeys as well as reading comprehension activities. She acquired a class bookcase and brought in many of her own books to share with students. Many students are selecting books to read or view during their transition periods rather than reaching for the iPad.
We commenced CBL excursions this term, our first one taking photographs at Jandakot Airport: Public Viewing Area. It was a productive day with students taking photographs of the community and safety signs in the area, as well as photographic and video footage of planes arriving, departing and being washed. It was a successful day and we look forward to our leisure activities commencing at Cockburn Youth Centre next term.
The staff in ESC 13 are so pleased with the progress made by students throughout the term and also the engagement and participation up until the end of the term. Students are tired but they are still putting in 100%. Well done team! And Thank You to staff who have supported the students through building relationships, improvising, working together and sharing ideas and resources. It has been such a successful term and staff and students alike deserve a relaxing break!
Miss Renee Davis
ESC 14 has been busy learning about ANZAC day and the men and women who served our country. The students have been listening to the story of Ernest Edward Dunlop, a surgeon who was captured and kept in a prisoner of war camp till the end of WW11. Dunlop operated in very difficult conditions and always put himself before others. After watching Dunlop operate on one of their own, the Japanese guards called him the number one soldier.
The Education Support Centre will be holding an assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day on Tuesday the 30th April 2019 at 12.15pm.
All the students have continued to work to the best of their ability this term and I can honestly say that I feel very privileged to be one of their teachers.
Those students following the preliminary 2 units in english have now successfully conducted their interviews with senior staff in order to find out what people think about the rules we all have to follow in our community. They are presently using their findings to construct a brochure, which will be used as part of the assessment process.
In mathematics, we are starting to look at what a budget is, how to prepare one’s own budget and how to manage money wisely.
As part of our Bush Rangers program, we all worked together in order to construct a poppy wreath and then each student selected and researched an ANZAC hero of interest to them. They then decorated their cross with a picture of their soldier and added some specific information about them. These items will be used in our upcoming ANZAC service.

All students are encouraged to try their best to be neat when putting pen to paper, some students are specifically focussing on improving their handwriting.

The students are given the opportunity to report back to the rest of their class the day after work experience. All of them indicate that they are having an enjoyable experience.
Once again, I would like to thank the education assistants from ESC 15 for the tireless effort that they put into supporting our wonderful students
Term 1 has flown by super-fast!! All of the senior students have been very busy in their workplaces, here’s what a few of the students have had to say about their placements so far:
“I like to handle the many types of crystals and stones. Another thing I love about working there for is the store owner lets me choose a crystal to keep each week from the crystal trees. I enjoy informing the customers about the crystals I am still learning about. I love working there”.
Josh Gamble, Cindy Louise Spiritual Moments
Kayla Muller, IGA
“I like to set the tables for the dinner service. I wipe the tables, put on the tables; napkins, forks, knives and spoons. I join the morning exercise group with the residents and it’s pretty good. I am enjoying this workplace”.
Ben Armstrong, Brightwater Aged Care
“I like wiping and tidying the shoes. I’m pretty good at cleaning shoes. I put celery and potatoes onto the shelves for people to buy. I say ‘welcome’ customers”.
Azaria Denmead. AYLA (Assisting Your Life To Achieve)
“I go to Petstock. I clean the fish tanks and vacuum the shop. I like to also play with the cats”.
Kiara Muller, Petstock
“I really like working at the aged care for my traineeship. I like to help the elderly with games and playing with the big balloon. I am saving the money I earn to go on a trip to Bali for my 18th. They have told me they will teach me how to help feed the elderly too”.
Anna Johnson, Amberley Aged Care
“I am doing a school based traineeship in childcare. What I like about working in childcare is interacting with children. There are so many things I like about my work I can’t just choose one!! I enjoy working with the different age groups”.
Tayla Sherratt, Buggles Childcare
“I am employed with St John of God Health Care at Murdoch Hospital and I do a trolley service throughout the hospital wards and sell products like chocolates, lollies, chips, newsletters, magazines and toiletry items. I enjoy the free meal after my shift and speaking to my colleagues at work”.
Nick Leone, SJOG
“I work at Activ Bentley. I work in the timber section. It’s fun working in the timber section, the people are really nice there. My favourite job is helping build the beds. I like building the beds because it’s fun and I am learning something”.
Jesse Crispin, Activ Timber

West Coast Eagles visit
On Monday the 1st of April, Leeming SHS Education Support Centre had some very special visitors. Chris Masten, Andrew Gaff, Tom Hickey and Nathan Vardy from the West Coast Eagles stopped by to run some drills, take photos, sign autographs and answer questions. Our students (and staff) had an absolute ball getting to know the players. Some classes were lucky enough to be involved in footy drills run by the players. Andrew Gaff was very impressed with the student’s great footy skills and hopes to see some playing for the Eagles one day!
Thank you to the West Coast Eagles and the Western Australia Football Commission for making this possible. It was a very exciting morning enjoyed by all.

We have been having lots of fun in PCP this term, with all classes focussing on different concepts. I would like to share a little about what the year 11 and 7 students are up to. In year 11 we have been writing our own Acknowledgment of Country to be performed at the ANZAC assembly in week 1, next term. The students have been looking at what they love about living in Australia and also why we perform an Acknowledgement of Country at our assemblies – who is it for, who can read it, what does it mean? We are getting very excited for our work to be read at the assembly.
In year 7 we have capped off a term of identifying our feelings by making some cool emoji faces. The students chose which emoji they wanted to create and the end results look fantastic.
Have an awesome holiday everyone!
Hannah McPierzie
