The Leavers’ Assembly on Monday 8 November was a great way for staff, students and families to celebrate and acknowledge the Leeming ESC 2021 graduating students. Students have worked very hard to achieve positive post-school pathways through employment, independent travel, community connections and friendships; they all have very bright futures ahead of them. We are very proud of this cohort of students and look forward to celebrating their achievements on Thursday 25 November at Tompkins on Swan for their final dinner.
Congratulations to Luka Oroz, who received the Ampol Best All-Rounder Award at the Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC Year 12 Final Assembly. The award recognises the all-round contributions a student has made to their school and community. Luka was a very worthy recipient of this award.
As our leavers are enjoying their last few weeks of school, our new 2022 Year 7’s are starting their transition into high school. The Year 7 Transition Program started in Week 4 and will conclude in Week 7. A very warm welcome to all our new students and families. I enjoyed getting to meet all the parents and families at the information session on 3 November, and look forward to getting to know all the students over the next few weeks as they become familiar with staff and their new school environment. Thank you to our Board members, Joss Morgan and Bernadette McCarthy, for giving up your time to welcome our new families and provide valuable information, tips and advice.
The disco on Friday 29 October was a lot of fun, and I would like to thank the disco committee, Ms Hamel and all the volunteers, for a wonderful night. Also, a special thank you to the very creative and talented Mrs Bruns for the amazing Halloween decorations. There were some fantastic costumes, lots of dancing, laughing and socialising with friends.
After the success of our annual Pop-Up Shops in Term 3, we will be hosting the Education Support South Network (ESSN) Market Day on Thursday 19 November. Education Support primary and high schools will be joining us to sell their creative enterprise products. This community event is about creativity, participation and connection by bringing together partner schools within the ESSN. We are looking forward to this event and building relationships within our school network.
At the last meeting of the school board, held on Monday 25 October, we welcomed our new community member Nicole Howe to the Board. We also considered the nominations received for the parent representatives and were delighted to confirm Gail Stevens and Raylene Natoli, who will join our Board on 29 November. New parent representatives will ensure appropriate balance of community, parent and school on the Board moving forward into 2022.
The Board looks forward to the experience that the new members will bring to our deliberations.
We settled the agenda for the Annual Public Meeting (held on Monday 8 November). In 2022, a different time of the day will be scheduled for this meeting to increase the attendance at this important meeting.
Other matters considered at our meeting included the draft budget, planning for the Year 7 Transition (held 3 November), the Parent Information Booklet, and an update on pathways for our students and the Parent Facebook group.
Our Chaplain Vangi spoke to the Board on the Community Project. There is need for the following items:
- sliced cheese
- margarine
- muesli bars
- noodles
- large shorts
- underwear
If you have some capacity to include some of these items in your weekly shopping budget, they can be dropped in at the ESC administration.
Thank you.

ESC 2 has been on the go since Week 1! We started the term with most students going off to Bridgetown for the Bush Rangers Camp and the remainder preparing for the ESSN Sport Carnival held at Atwell College, where we had a great day in the warm weather competing against other schools.
Week 2 rolled around and our class completed our final bit of P-Unit and ASDAN work for the year. The class worked so hard that, by the end of the week, we enjoyed a movie at HOYTS as a class reward for all of our hard work we put into our Pop-Up shops in Term 3!
Week 3 was camp week for the ESC 2 class! We ventured to Perth Zoo for the day on Thursday, via Elizabeth Quay for some recess. Our class teamed up with Mrs Enoma’s and Miss Blackburn’s to look at all of the cool and exciting things at the zoo. We made it back to school and set up camp in two classrooms ready for games, pizza and movies for the night! The next day was full of lots of fun activities all about our day at the zoo!
We had a great time together as a group and we couldn’t be prouder of all of our students!
We are looking forward to some upcoming events like Market Day and Family Fun Day at the end of term. Well done ESC 2 on a great term so far!
In ESC 3, we have enjoyed the start of Term. In Week 3, we had our camp sleepover at the school, which was a great opportunity to spend time with our friends from other classes. We went to Elizabeth Quay and caught the ferry to South Perth. We then spent the day at Perth Zoo and loved seeing all the animals. At night, we all had pizza and a movie night! The next day, we participated in a range of activities such as scrapbooking and kite making.
This term has also seen us commence our work experience placements, and all of the staff are extremely proud of how well each student has transitioned to their workplace roles. We have students working across a variety of industry areas including community services, child care and hospitality. Our students attend work every Wednesday and are doing an amazing job!

I congratulate all my Year 10 students for having a very successful year across the different learning areas. Their elasticity, unwaning enthusiasm and ability to stay focused in a year that has challenged us in many ways is highly commendable. I hope you will all sustain this tempo into the 2022 school year and wish you all the best for the future. The provision of individualised learning meant that each student had opportunities to learn different things according to their needs and ability levels.
Mathematics: This term, the majority of my Year 10 students dedicated themselves to practising their multiplication tables at the commencement of every maths lesson as part of their mental maths routine. Others investigated numbers to further depth using the number line approach at various levels of difficulty. As money maths was one of our priority skill areas for this term, students explored working with different values of coins and notes and using their prior knowledge of skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to add simple amounts of money. The set-up of a “classroom supermarket” added a practical dimension to their comprehension of various components of money skills. These included reading shopping catalogues, adding items to their individual shopping lists, and receiving and giving change while making payments for their items. Some students have extended their mathematical skills development to more advanced domains (for example: multiplying three-digit by single-digit numbers).
English: My Year 10 students have been busy this semester exploring a wide range of texts aimed at developing relevant skills to making them become intentional, purposeful and active readers. They have specifically been working on employing metacognitive strategies in their reading activities and over time have individually improved on their reading fluency and comprehension. The four reading roles strategy (Freebody & Luke 1990) came handy for these students as they employed the meaning maker, code breaker, text user and text critic to dissect various texts and read between the lines. Students also had ample opportunities to practise their creative writing, punctuation, and spelling skills as well as increased their participation in phonics activities.
Excursion to Perth Zoo and Overnight Camp at School: What an amazing day at the zoo and opportunity to forge friendships with other Years 10 and 11 students! It was great to see them expressing themselves so positively, showing mutual respect, demonstrating their love for the environment and just enjoying the day. At the zoo, students learned about different animals, the ongoing conservation efforts to prevent them from extinction and the countries/continents in which they originated from. Grouping students and staff in teams made it possible for them to develop effective interpersonal and communication skills in an unfamiliar social setting. Their participation in the Bush Rangers STEM activities further increased their awareness of environmental conservation. The various group activities provided were targeted at consolidating on their use of positive language (such as ‘I believe that I will be successful‘, ‘I am not afraid to make mistakes’ and so on) in an authentic learning environment. Students also enjoyed their time participating in various life skills activities such as survival strategies in the wilderness (E.g., ‘STOP’ an acronym for: S –Slow down/Stay calm, T – Think about the factors affecting your situation, O –Observe the things that are available to you and P – Plan your action). The excursion to Perth Zoo and our overnight camp at school was truly an experience to remember!

What a busy start to Term 4 the students of ESC 5 have had! Four lucky students got to attend Bush Rangers Camp in Bridgetown in the first week with Mrs Palma. They had a blast exploring the beautiful region and enjoyed lots of outdoor activities such as weeding, bushwalking and damper making cooked with a pit fire.
The students are engaged in learning about the Noonyar Six Seasons in HASS, mutliplication tables in Math, literacy programs such a Colourful Semantics, PBS values and film-making and fun Bush Rangers activities. Students are thoroughly enjoying their selected options such Art, Craft, Dancing, Digitech, Sport and D&T
On CBL, the students have been Superstars at catching the bus and train to Gateway. The class visited the Youth Centre and explored their facilities such as the recording studio, basketball courts, gaming room, pool tables and more. Next week they plan to visit the Cockburn Library and their favourite Maccas for lunch.
Last Friday, the class celebrated Halloween making yummy cheese pizzas and enjoying some scary baked cookies. Some of the students attended the Halloween disco in the evening, which was a spooky and fun event enjoyed by all.
With the end of year fast approaching, the class are committed to more learning and fun times with our eight terrific, maturing young men! They look forward to a zoo visit, Christmas disco (in class), CBL visits and the Family Fun Day!

What an amazing start to our last term of Year 8! I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone and how much we’ve achieved together. Term 4 has already kept us extremely busy with many fun events. In Week 1, Izzie and Rohan enjoyed a Bush Ranger camp with other students within the centre. The rest of ESC 6 travelled to Atwell College for the ESSN Athletics Carnival at the end of Week 1, and participated in a range of sporting activities. Leeming ESC didn’t take home the ESSN Athletics trophy this time, but we were all very proud of Goldie for winning a medal for her efforts on the day!
In Week 3, we partied the night away at the school disco. It was awesome to see so many students embrace the Halloween theme, and come dressed in their best spooky costumes!

In Science this term, we have continued our learning on physical sciences and movement. We have been focusing on different toys and familiar house and classroom items, and have conducted a range of investigations to find out which objects roll, bounce and spin. We have enjoyed making predications, observations and recording the results!
The results are in for our annual ESC 6 AFL tipping competition, and the winner for 2021 was… DRUM ROLL… Archer! Archer won a canteen voucher for finishing on top of the ladder with the highest amount of points.

We are looking forward to finishing our Term 4 CBL program, which started in Week 3, to Westfield Booragoon, which has brought new and exciting challenges with our community skills and travel training.
We are also excited to finish the term on an exciting and positive note with Family Day, which will be jam packed with fun water based activities. Bring it on!
Miss Gage.
This term kick-started with a fun day at the ESSN Carnival during Week 1. The students enthusiastically participated in all events, with Liam awarded ‘Player of the Day’ from Leeming ESC. Well done, Liam!
At the end of last term we said goodbye to Mrs McCarthy, who has taken on a new role in the mines. We then welcomed Miss. Viner, who will be helping us for the rest of the term.
In CBL this term, we are taking the bus to go to Bull Creek Shopping Centre, where students will continue to practise their transport and money skills.
Please enjoy the pictures below.

Wow, we are into Term 4 already! Time flies when you’re having fun! During class time, we have been working hard to achieve our goals. We have been focussing on ICT skills during literacy, and some of our classmates have written some really cool stories using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. We have also been learning how to use Microsoft Teams and completing some class tasks online.
For STEAM this term, we have been programming ‘Beebots’.
WHAT IS A BEEBOT, YOU SAY? It sounds futuristic, doesn’t it? Well, let me tell you, the future is in ESC 9! Our student engineers have been constructing many things, like a laser cutting sandwich machine. Well, maybe that is a slight extension of the truth.
Ok, time to explain what a Beebot is! It’s a small ‘bot’ that looks like a bee, which we program using directional language such as left, right, forward and backwards. We created an obstacle course and programed our Beebots to manoeuvre through the course. We also made mazes, and are currently constructing a city for the Beebots to travel through. In groups, we use our problem solving skills to calculate the distance and select the appropriate direction. Sometimes it takes us three or more attempts to get it right!
All of ESC 9 are looking forward to more fun projects and activities this term, including building a water filter in Science and Bush Rangers, a leadership program with the Stephen Michael Foundation and, of course, our end of year celebration!!
Written by Willem Baum
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the last term for this year! The start of Term 4 has been busy with us preparing for the ESSN Market Day in Week 6. In Phys Ed, the students have been learning how to play T-Ball; in Art, we have continued to learn about textures and masks; and, in Home Economics, we cook up a storm each week! The students have focused on following their USTAR values every, particularly showing Unity in past weeks by being successful Bush Rangers and valued classroom members. This week, we are off to Southlands Shopping Centre for CBL and are excited to explore new shops.
It is going to be a mad dash to the end of the school year so we had better buckle up! Stay tuned for some more adventures with ESC 10.
Ms Knox, Miss Russell, Mrs T-J and Mrs Brayne

ESC 11 have been busy working and preparing for Market Day on Thursday 18 November. The students will be selling raffle tickets for outdoor wooden centre pieces and muffins. They have also made many colourful key rings which will be sold on the day.
We have had a busy start to the term with lots of things going on! The West Australian Syphony Orchestra visited for an amazing incursion and wowed us with their interactive version of Wombat Stew. Our students were introduced to a string quartet and shown the different ways the violin, viola and cello could inspire and entertain us.
We also learnt some vital bush survival skills with an incursion from Bush Wisdom. We were shown how to find water using the leaves of a eucalyptus tree, how to filter water to drink and how to build a tripod for protection and fire safety.
Our class welcomed a few new members in the form of two ladybirds! As they laid some eggs, we watched the lifecycle of a ladybird happening before our eyes. We saw them hatch in the form of larvae, watched them grow bigger and bigger through the pupa stage and then hatch into ladybirds. After a few days of observing them, we successfully released our ladybirds into our school vegetable garden. It was an interactive experience where the students were able to watch the process in action.
Personal hygiene has also been a focus this term. We have revisited the importance of looking after our bodies and, as part of this, we have each been given a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean our teeth at school. Some of our students are not keen on the idea but have been taking part as a group and joining in to keep their teeth clean.
This year is fast coming to an end and we are all excited for the final weeks. I would like to thank our students again for their hard work, the support from our parents and our Education Assistants.
Samantha Scarle
Wow, I can’t believe that the school year is coming to an end! We have had a busy term as we finished our P Units in Maths and English, and the Bush Ranger program. The highlight for this term has certainly been the Life Keys Advocacy course, where students are learning to be responsible for articulating their wants for their future. On 8November, we hosted the Leavers' Assembly. It won’t be long before some of the students leave and transition to post-school life. Here are some final words from our students:
Aiden: "To be honest, I will miss my teachers the most, and my interactions with them and my friends. But, probably most of all I will miss playing sports everyday with Sam."
Ellie: "I will miss seeing my friends every day, mostly Max and Lauren, and going on camp."
Liam: "I will miss teachers and getting prizes at assembly."
Luka: "I will miss my teachers and my friends."
Lauren: "I will miss my friends and the teachers."
Brandon: "I will miss my daily chats with Mrs Riley and hanging out with my friends."
Kane: "I will miss my friends, teachers and going on camps and all the Art lessons."
Corey: "I will miss my friends and Mr Z. We have so much fun in the gardening program."
Tania: "I will miss my friends, Ellie and Lauren, and my teacher, Ms Parwani."
Thomas: "I will miss my friends, especially Luka, and I will miss Mrs Johnson, too."
As Term 4 comes to an end, we reflect on our achievements and how far we have come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my WONDERFUL Year 12's and tell you how proud I am of all your achievements. I am so blessed to be part of your learning journey in 2021. I am excited to see what 2022 holds for you, and wish you all the best.
Ms Parwani, Mrs Hales, Mrs Cox, Mrs Smithson and Mrs Johnson
Congratulations leavers for all your achievements so far this term!
We completed our final CBL outings to Cockburn Central Shopping Centre. Students used the centre map to locate stores of their choice and successfully directed the group to their chosen locations. We also practised using the Smartrider top-up machine to check our card balances, as well as locate the train information and emergency assistance machines at Cockburn Station. For recess, students had various snacks from the food court where they ordered and paid for their meals.
Students successfully completed the My Keys for Life Self Advocacy Program. This workshop took place over two days, where students learnt about their rights and responsibilities, and how to actively participate in planning for their futures.
Another amazing opportunity was the planning and presentation of youth programs and facility ideas for the Fremantle area. Students took part in a brainstorm before sharing their suggestions with the Community Development Officer of the City of Fremantle.
Still to come are the leavers' graduation assembly, presentation evening, and camp at Lake Leschenaultia. We will share some of the highlights from these amazing events in the next newsletter!

From Miss Megrail and team.
Our Leeming Link recess and lunch program has taken off with a great start. I can’t believe we are halfway through Term 4!
On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, we have been very busy. We have been creative with chalk, made our own caterpillars and snails to eat, enjoyed sensory play with coloured spaghetti, gotten ourselves in a twist with Twister and practised our spelling skills with giant scrabble… just to name a few!
This week we have had Reading Café, Giant Dominoes and Human Hungry Hippos on the timetable.
From Week 6 through to Week 10, we have many more exciting and interactive games and activities for students to participate in.
Please enjoy some of the snaps taken capturing what students have been learning at Leeming Link and look out for the Term 4 Leeming Link Timetable, also included in the newsletter.

The school community have continued to embrace our USTAR app this term, developed by Mr Lewis, and the number of USTAR tokens awarded are growing and growing! The Lucky Draw feature was used again at our Week 5 ESC assembly, and here are the student USTAR winners!

William Talbot and Ryley Savy
We also used The Lucky Draw feature for the attendance raffle! For each day a student attends school, they are given a token in the draw. Here is one of the attendance winners!

Classroom teachers are now explicitly teaching PBS lessons once a week. The last two weeks have focused on the value Unity.
In ESC 10, we enjoy discussing our USTAR values and how we are showing them in the classroom, school and wider community. The students love acting out role-plays with each other to demonstrate their understanding and sharing anecdotes with one another. To show Unity, we always make sure we pack away our equipment, recycle paper and work together to be positive Bush Rangers. In our classroom, we have a big display at the front of the room to remind us of our values every day! We love being Leeming ESC Stars!

Our last sports carnival for the year was held on Thursday 4 November. It was a soccer carnival run by Kalamunda School. We had three teams represent Leeming ESC on the day and all students participated really well.
"On Thursday, I went to the soccer carnival with my school. I liked playing in the games, even though we didn’t win them. I didn’t mind, I just liked playing in the games. After the games, we all hung out with our friends then we had a presentation of all the winning schools." Ellie Christie
The Year 12 students also held a soccer shoot out competition last week that saw the whole school come out and participate. Students had to score a goal from a set position, which gradually got further and further away. Our overall winner was Oscar, with Gurman coming a close second. Well done to everyone who nominated themselves!
The Year 10's have joined the WPL program this term and are all working super hard in their placements – all of the host employers are very impressed!

In Week 2, students that were engaging in the Activ Internship took a trip to the Construction Futures Centre. Here’s what they had to say:
Liam: "This term we visited Construction Future Centre, where we learnt about building and jobs in the building industry. There was lots of activities to do. I enjoyed using the excavator simulator and the pipework game."
Ellie: "I visited a place this term that was about building and jobs in construction. I liked building a house in the sand with my friends and going in the house with Liam and scanning all the different things.
Josh: "This term I went to Construction Future Centre as part of my Active internship. It had so much to see and lots of interactive things to use, which were all about building and jobs in building. My favourite things were the two virtual reality stations, where I used a crane and worked on a building site."

It was a pleasure to present the Workplace Learning Employee of the Month award to Poppy. Poppy received this award at our school assembly for trying her very best each week at Zenith Insurance Services. Her communication skills and manners were impeccable. Throughout the placement, Poppy learnt the role of a junior office assistant. Poppy listened to all instructions and asked questions as required. Poppy maintained a positive and professional approach at Zenith. Congratulations to Poppy for also achieving independent travel skills for this workplace!

This term the Bush Rangers committee arranged a bush survival incursion with Vanessa from ‘Wisdom Survival’. She taught the students various bush survival skills, which included what essentials to take when hiking, camping and walking in the bush. These essentials ranged from a first aid kit to a plastic bag for draining water from eucalyptus trees. The students then built a shelter using sticks and twine.
The after-school Bush Rangers had the opportunity to extend their knowledge on a range of reptiles with Vanessa as well, who helped encourage them to overcome their fears. Vanessa taught the cadets how to correctly pick up a bobtail lizard and non-poisonous snakes. This incursion was enjoyed by students and staff. Thank you to Mrs Smith for organising this incursion.
During the last five weeks, the after-school cadets have continued to work on community projects at local parks and Coogee Beach. The cadets have afternoon tea provided in a social setting prior to commencing their group task; which include removing non-native, invasive plants from local parks and monitoring plastics at the beach. The cadets enjoyed seeing a range of local wildflowers in the natural bush. What amazing experience!
