Multicultural Day celebrated earlier in the term, provided students with cultural learning experiences through art, craft, food and dance. This has become a special annual event in collaboration with Leeming SHS to celebrate the cultural diversity within our school community. Thank you to Mrs Houden, Mrs Vann, school chaplain Vangi and all the staff who provided their time and support for this wonderful cultural event.
Students are now looking forward to our annual Pop Up Shops on Tuesday 31st August and have been busy working on classroom enterprise projects. I am very impressed with the creative ideas, quality and standard of the products and services the students have produced. This is a wonderful community event supported by the local primary schools and Leeming SHS. Families are welcome to come along, enjoy the community atmosphere and purchase products the students have made. Money raised will go towards a chosen charity for each class.
With the current COVID -19 situation in the eastern states, the Department of Education is supporting all schools to be prepared to transition to a remote learning model if the situation suddenly changes in Western Australia. Families were surveyed earlier this term to gather important information to assist us in reviewing our Remote Learning plan. From our experiences in 2020, the importance of maintaining contact and connection with students and families is a priority. Students have been learning to log into the Department of Education portal to access Microsoft Teams for video conferencing, and access learning activities through Seesaw, Connect and Teams. This has been an exciting learning experience for students and an opportunity to develop their technology skills. To best cater for the diverse range of student needs, we have adopted a multi modal approach to remote learning. On Monday 20th September, there will be an information session at the Parent Network meeting to inform parents about our Remote Leaning Model and an opportunity to ask questions.
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new staff members, Ashley Cabassi, Annmarie Harvey, Heather Musson, Melissa Randall and Rechelle Hawkes. You have all settled in very well this term and it is great to have you part of the Leeming ESC Team.
Our wonderful and long serving social trainer Mr Caddy is currently unwell in hospital. On behalf of the Leeming ESC school community, we have been sending Mr Caddy and his family our thoughts and best wishes.
Students have been practising in preparation for the Leeming SHS and ESC athletics carnival and ESSN carnival later in the term. I am looking forward to seeing students demonstrating our USTAR values, participating and having fun on Friday 10th and 17th September. Thank you Ms Allomes and Ms Pereira for all your coordination and organisation in preparation for these events.

At the last School Board meeting held on August 2nd, Sanja Tesic, Senior Business Partner (HR and Safety) with the City of Melville presented to us the opportunities that the City of Melville has for our students in respect of future employment/work experience pathways. We look forward to further exploring this relationship with the City of Melville and appreciated Sanja's presentation.
The Board discussed other agenda items including the School Facebook page and the ongoing professional development of the School Board members. Dawn Barker has accepted a further three year term on the Board in the role of a Community member and we look forward to Dawn's ongoing involvement with LSH ESC.
The Board was updated on the Department of Education pandemic planning should there be another COVID driven event requiring remote learning and we continued our review of the preparations for our School Review in 2022.
Finance activities were discussed along with 2022 enrolments.
As a Board we are always striving to ensure every avenue of communication is available to all members of the school community whether it be online (website), direct contact, hard copy reports, mobile phone apps, open invitation events and meetings on the school campus, social media or face to face conversations. COVID 19 has impacted every aspect of how our society functions and we have missed not being able to host full onsite school assemblies in the past 17 months. We will continue working to maintain the strong connections of our school community.
Kind regards
Digby Claydon

One of our students Star Morrison recently participated in Horse Therapy with the Autism Horse Australia. They run Sensory Sessions where children can choose to watch, touch, interact or feed the therapy horses with the guidance of the Counsellor and team.
Star's mother said it was such a glorious morning and the whole family got a day out and lots of love from the horses.

Our year 10 students are in their last term of working at Striker Recreation Centre. It has been a fantastic opportunity to learn about the requirements of the workplace, as well as developing work readiness routines such as hygiene, keeping uniforms clean, keeping tidy workplaces and solving problems that may arise in the workplace. We are so proud of everything our students have achieved and want to pass on a special thanks to Glenda for helping us develop these skills.
This term, our students have completed a research project on Tokyo to celebrate the Olympic Games. We have completed a brainstorm to discuss what we know about Tokyo, and students have selected the ones that interest them the most. We found loads of information and interesting photos and presented them to the class as a PowerPoint presentation. Students did a fantastic job creating their PowerPoints and gave really interesting presentations.
I would like to thank all of our parents for their continued support during the My Plan process, it has been a pleasure getting to work with everyone planning for our students futures. I would also like to thank all the staff for their amazing work throughout the term and the year! We welcomed Melissa Randall, who has been working with us on Thursday and Friday while Mrs Brennan is completing her final teaching practicum.
Our ESC 2 class has been flying along this term! We have been learning all about consequences during our literacy sessions and budgeting our finances in maths! We have been busily preparing for our Pop Up Shop business, creating some great stress balls to sell on the day. Here are some of the things our class has been enjoying and are looking forward to this term.

Adam: I have started working a second day during the week and I am loving my time at my new work places.
Yu Jia: I have been working hard at my literacy and talking skills and I am having lots of fun doing work activities
Half way through term 3 already! We have been very busy in ESC 3 getting ready for the Pop Up Shops where we will be selling cards, posters and reusable bags. We have been loving the Olympics and are looking forward to the Paralympics. We have researched different athletes to find out more about them. We also enjoy learning about the countries they are from, and had fun on Multicultural Day. We have written what we have enjoyed so far, and what we are looking forward to this term below:
Aidan: This term I have enjoyed dance and going to work experience at Striker. I am looking forward to the Notre Dame sport program and the Pop Up Shops.
Alyssa: I liked CBL and Work Right and I’m looking forward to Girls Camp.
Henry: The thing I liked about this term was hanging out with my friend Raymond playing soccer. It was fun kicking the ball on the oval. I enjoyed making bags for the Pop Up Shops. I’m looking forward to catching public transport to get to my work placement for term 4.

Molly: This term I liked going to Striker and making cards for the Pop Up Shops. I’m looking forward to the Pop Up Shops.
Makenzie: This term I have enjoyed doing my certificate course and continuing with my Bush Ranger leadership responsibilities

Mathematics: The year 10.3 students are having a productive term acquiring, practising and consolidating different mathematical skills in accordance with their individual ability levels. While some students have been deepening their engagements with number sense by learning the fundamental algorithm for division and the commutative and associative properties of numbers (addition and multiplication), another cohort has been working on their money skills and the place value of numbers. Some students have had fun skip counting by twos, fives, and tens. Others have been familiarising themselves with solving simple algebraic expressions, understanding number patterns and handling problems related to arithmetic progression. Students’ participation in mathematics lessons this term also extended to learning how to subtract numbers and converting various units of measurements (including converting from millimetres to centimetres, centimetres to metres and from metres to kilometres).
English Learning Areas: This term, my Year 10.3 students have been enjoying their pedagogical experience in recount writing, reading comprehension, sight words and informational report writing. The recently concluded Tokyo Olympic Games provided us with the opportunity to explore writing from historical and cultural perspectives. Students have been using the Internet to conduct research on the history of the Olympic games and the culture of the Japanese people. While some students communicated the outcomes of their research in posters, others elected to do so in PowerPoint presentations. In general, students have demonstrated improved confidence in writing as evident from them to have a go at independent writing activities.
Year 10 ESC 4 Community Based Learning: The year 10.3 students went on an excursion this term to the Garden City shopping Centre as part of our Social skills and Protective Behaviour instructional programs. Students had opportunities to consolidate on their public transport skills and how to interact appropriately with fellow passengers and other members of the community. In the shops, students embraced the opportunity to consolidate on their money maths skills in a real-life learning environment (e.g. Comparing the prices of various items). It was great to observe them exercising courtesy while buying their own lunch, sitting at a table and eating together respectfully as well as displaying pleasant table manners.

What an amazing start to term 3! The highlight so far was the Olympic presentation from Ms Pereira, as she has represented Australia at the Olympics a few times due to being a champion hockey player. It was amazing to see her medals, the Olympic torch and green and gold uniform.

The students have also enjoyed Multicultural Day, community learning at Gateways Cockburn, an excursion to Bibra Lake Regional Reserve and Yanchep National Park. The students have linked their Bush Rangers, maths, HASS and science projects to support their learning about the different types of values found at parks, reserves and national parks. We enjoyed an Aboriginal Experience excursion at Yanchep, learning about the Noongar six seasons and the significant flora and fauna for different months of the year. Through observation the students have documented, and applied their knowledge of key values to identify the purpose and priorities of managing national park landscapes. The students have integrated their learning to design their own park, and created a legend to include symbols representing the key values, facilities, management and activities available in their park. Check out the students comments below:
Samuel: On the Multicultural day I was looking after the book stall during recess and lunch. It was awesome fun!

Evan and Coby: We went to Bibra Lake to explore the different values at the reserve and the best value was the nature playground. We really enjoyed playing on the tree top climb.
Thomas: In sport, I have been practising for the school athletics carnival and playing the octopus tag game with Miss Allomes.

Isaac: We have been doing cooking this term and learning about different recipes, pricing products and the best store to buy the shopping. We went to the shops brought some of the item on CBL.

Phillip and Isaac: We have be learning about the Noongar Six Seasons and making a calendar to sell at the, ‘Pop Up Shop’. We have also made some Cockatoo cards and book marks to help raise money to donate to Kaararkin Conservation Black Cockatoo project. We plan to visit Kaarakin later in the term.
Gurman: In art I have been exploring the horoscopes star signs and also created jungle pictures.

Billy: STEAM is a good place to make code and I enjoy going to the afterschool club.
Mrs Vann: The Aboriginal Experience with Derek was deadly awesome!
It is rewarding to work with amazing students boys, Mrs Blacklock, Miss Chatfield, Ms Palma, and I, are so impressed and proud of their achievements, self-responsibility and respect. These are values, three of our five, Positive Behaviour Support Values. Well done!
We also wanted to thank parents for raising such, kind and caring young men. Thank you!
Mrs Vann, Mrs Blacklock, Miss Chatfield and Ms Palma
Kaya (Hi),

I would like to thank and acknowledge the Aboriginal Curriculum Standards Framework (ACSF) Committee for their participation and enthusiasm in this year’s Multicultural and Arts Festival. The committee created a Bush Tucker table, providing students and staff with taste sensations of choc mint health balls and kangaroo sausage rolls. Ingredients of native herbs were sourced from the ESC Aboriginal garden. (Thank you Michelle Smith and Lisa Palma!) The students’ creativity blossomed participating in the amazing bunting flag activity where they painted native fauna (thanks to Jonnine Kaiser and Janet Bruns). The incredible young boys from Koolangas Kreate dance group, were organised by Kym Buchanan and they were a huge hit. $1000.00 funding for this event was sourced from PALS (Partnership Acceptance Learning Sharing) from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Government of WA, (thank you Lorraine Vann), along with contributing funds from Leeming Senior High School (thank you Multicultural Committee.) It was wonderful day with the Senior High School and the Education Support Centre working together to make it amazing event enjoyed by everyone. A special thank you to Cathy Houden and Vangi Evangeli for your work with the Multicultural Committee, to make this a hugely successful event. Thank you to everyone that helped to make this a wonderful day for all the students and staff.

Boorda (Bye)
It is hard to believe we are half way through term 3 already! This term we welcomed our new Education Assistant, Mrs Cabassi. It has been great getting to know Mrs Cabassi and we are excited for the rest of Semester 2 with her part of the ESC 6 team!
We have all been enjoying our new option classes music, art, D&T, craft, dance and DigiTech. We have also started learning about new and exciting topics in class such as division in Maths and the Australian States and Territories in HASS. In Science, we have continued our learning about materials and physical and chemical changes, and how we can change materials by heating or cooling them. We have loved conducting our experiments such as melting ice cubes, heating chocolate, cooling a range of liquids and cooking popcorn. We are keen to move onto our next Science topic, movement!

In week 3 we began our term 3 CBL program to Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre. Last Semester we became so independent catching the 516 bus and all the transport skills that went with it, and are now transferring those skills over to using the Mandurah train line from Murdoch train station to Cockburn train station. We all did a great job in week 3 and are excited to develop these skills over the term.
ESC6 is also beginning the preparation for the Leeming ESC Pop-Up Shops…Stay tuned!

Have a look at term 3 highlights from 8.2 students below:
Miss Gage.
Jai:
Archer:
Rohan: I like DigiTech because we open computers and fix them. I also like doing Craft with Mrs Khosla. We made a dog, parrot and a placemat. We went to Cockburn Shopping Centre on CBL. I liked buying lunch. I bought Bucking Bull. I got chicken salt chips with a Pepsi. In Science we learned what happens when we cool or heat objects. On Multicultural Day we watched Aboriginal people dance. We had a hot dog. Then we did some multicultural activities. I did painting. I’m also looking forward to the Athletics Carnivals.
Brock: In term 3 I learnt about how materials can change. We heated the corn kernels and we saw it change into popcorn. It was fun. In Art I coloured the planet Mars. It was red, yellow and orange. I liked my art activity with Mrs Harcourt.
Izzie: On CBL we took a group photo before going on the 516 bus. We got off at Murdoch station and we stayed on the left on the escalator. At Cockburn Shopping Centre we needed a worksheet to find the emergency exit signs. For lunch I had a Subway gluten free wrap with a Fanta. We went back to school using a bus and a train. In DigiTech I used micro bit for a robot. We played Minecraft and we could build secret houses. At D&T I sawed wood to make a Father’s Day gift. At PE I did javelin to get ready for the Athletics Carnivals.
Star: In term 3 I enjoyed sport on Wednesdays and Thursdays because I like relay races and long jump. I enjoy Music as well because I like to play the keyboard with everyone else. I like DigiTech because we play Minecraft Education. I like Dance because we do the “cha cha” and free dance. I like Multicultural Day because we painted animals. I like Science and I learned about physical changes. If you put water in the freezer and it turns to ice, it can be undone because if we pull it out of the freezer it will melt back to water. If you put kernels in the popcorn machine and heat it, it is a chemical change because it can’t be undone.
Ari: In term 3 we had CBL on Fridays. We went to Cockburn Shopping Centre, Our ‘safe spot’ was K-Mart. We had to find emergency exit signs. We had to find a map from the Information Desk. Then we had lunch and I had chips and a drink from Bucking Bull. We took the bus and the train back to school. I also like DigiTech because we play Minecraft Education.
Goldie: On Wednesdays I do Craft with Mrs Khosla. I made a parrot out of coloured paper. I enjoyed Multicultural Day. I liked dot painting and it was fun. I painted a rock in the Aboriginal colours.
This term we have commenced our CBL adventures by heading to Leeming Forum where students ordered their lunches independently. Students continued to work on their road safety skills along the way. Since the start of term we have been learning lots about the Olympics including the history, the athletes and the countries participating. We look forward to the Paralympics beginning and tallying how many medals Australia goes on to win. The students took part in Multicultural Day and enjoyed experiencing the vast array of cultures from around the world.

In week 7 this term we are having Pop Up Shops where we have been creating a range of objects to sell to the visiting parents and students. The students have been working very hard on these and they are all turning out fantastically. We look forward to seeing you there! We also have sport carnivals in week 8 and 9 giving us lots to look forward to.
The ESC 7 Team
Ms Chambers, Mrs Chamberlain, Mrs Smith and Mrs Pillay
This term has started with lots of fun activities.
We started the term by recapping the school’s USTAR values and how the students need to show Unity, Self-Responsibility, Teamwork, Achievement and Respect in the classroom, in the school and in the community.
In Science, we are exploring about the body’s internal organs starting with a very important organ in our body – the heart.
We also had lots of fun during our Multicultural event, learning about the different cultures.
The students are now busy preparing for Pop Up Shops, working very hard to make wonderful products to sell. A big thank you to Miss Patterson for helping us get started! We miss you and hope you will be back with us soon!
Please enjoy the pictures below.

Corbin: We have had an awesome start to the term. The highlight was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We are very privileged to have two Olympians working at our school- Ms Pereira and Ms Hawkes (they both played hockey for Australia). They bought in their gold medals and we got to put them around our necks and hold them. We also got to try on some of their Olympic uniform. It was a great experience!
Ginger: It was good to watch the Olympics and support the Australian athletes. We got 17 gold medals “Go Aussie”. I was also supporting Brazil. I really enjoyed watching the gymnastics. It was great to see videos of Ms Pereira and Miss Hawkes playing Hockey in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics. The class kept a tally of each countries medals won. I am looking forward to supporting the Paralympics.
Sheona: On Friday’s ESC 9 have been wearing crazy socks to school. It has been really fun seeing everyone’s different socks! We will be doing this for the rest of the year. My socks have pineapples on them. I really like Miss Heard’s McDonalds socks!

Welcome to another wonderful, fun-filled term in ESC 10!
So far we have been continuing our CBL adventures to Bull Creek Shopping Centre, using our new transport training skills, money recognition and practising our social skills in real contexts. In Phys Ed, we’re getting prepared for our week 8 Carnival, in art Ms Healey is focusing on Space and home economics has seen us creating some very tasty recipes!

We celebrated the Olympics with a talk by Ms Pereira, who is part of our Phys Ed team and multiple gold medal winner at multiple Olympics. Ms Pereira also brought in several items from her time as an Olympian and we got an up-close look! Check out some of the photos that we took.
In week 7 we are having our annual Pop Up Shops and have been preparing many wonderful up-cycled items to sell. Keep the 31st of August free and come down to find some incredible items. We hope to see you there!

ESC 10 Team
Ms Knox, Mrs Brayne, Mrs T-J and Miss Russell
It is such a busy term that we had to hit the ground running day 1 of this term. It was lovely to meet most of the parents again during the recent My Plan meetings and wonderful to see some students have made good progress in to post school life. I would like to congratulate Lauren for getting a work trial with Containers for Change.
This term, we had the pleasure of having our very own Olympic gold medallist- Ms Jackie Pereira sharing with the class all about her experiences, achievements, and showcasing the mascots and the Olympic torch. We even got to hold a real gold medal! Thank you Ms Pereira for generously giving her time and sharing her experiences with us.
In conjunction with Bunnings, students from both ESC 13 and 14 undertook a conservation activity and set up a frog pond next to the school garden.
In our P Unit Literacy, we have been learning all the skills to be work ready and our amazing students watched as well as took part in role plays to continue harnessing these skills. In Math, we have been constantly working on money skills and our students even got the chance to count real money from the proceeds of our fundraising activities.
We have also been preparing tirelessly for our upcoming Pop up Shop on 31st August. Our class have been making personalised apron, dog biscuits and lavender and rose spray bottles throughout the year. We will be sending out the order forms soon and us you to support our enterprise. Half of the proceeds will go to Pet Rescue.
Our students have also been dabbling with online learning through Seesaw and Microsoft Teams. It is heart-warming to see our students gaining more confidence in using IT. Do ask your child to showcase their skills in logging into Seesaw and Microsoft Team.

From the ESC 13 team
Ms Parwani, Mrs Cox, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Hales and Mrs Smithson
Year 12 students have been busy brainstorming ideas for their graduating gift to the school. They decided on a brilliant way to create an evolving gift that will also help support the school’s ecosystems.
With the help of staff from Bunnings O’Connor, students cleared an area of land, ensuring not to remove any established bush tucker plants. Next, they carefully dug out the area and lined it with plastic. Remembering their workplace hazards lessons, students ensured their safety by wearing their hats and gloves while handling mulch. The area was then filled with water and native plants were used to decorate the remaining space. Beautiful stepping stones lead up to the area which will soon become home to many amphibians and other local wildlife.
Their teamwork and enthusiasm saw the school’s new frog pond come to life in no time! The space was transformed into a safe haven for local frogs and insects to enjoy for years to come. It was great to see Bush Ranger lessons over the years about the importance of conservation and helping to support the environment have really made a difference. A plaque will be erected next to the pond as a lasting reminder of the thoughtful gift from our graduating students of 2021.
Amazing work year 12’s, we are very proud of your team work that contributed to the success of this awesome project!

This term the PBS team have been excited to roll out our new USTAR app, created by the incredible Mr Lewis (Network Support Officer). It has been awesome to see all classrooms embracing and using the app to award students for demonstrating our USTAR values. Mr Lewis programmed a Lucky Draw on the app to randomly draw out students who have been awarded USTAR points over the term.
The Lucky Draw feature was used at our week 5 ESC assembly this term which was super exciting!
Congratulations to our first Lucky Draw winners!
Jai Batty and Ethan Lang
The PBS team have been working on developing a PBS Staff Handbook and our Art experts are still working hard to design a Leeming ESC PBS logo/mascot to represent our USTAR values. The PBS team have also started supporting classroom teachers in planning and implementing explicit PBS lessons, and will continue with this over the semester.
The PBS Team.

Term 3 is our busiest term with preparation for all our carnivals getting underway, Notre Dame Program starting and celebrating the Olympics. I would like to take this time to welcome Ms Hawkes to our team who is replacing Ms Heard for the rest of the year.
We are very fortunate to have both Ms Hawkes and Ms Pereira at our school who are both Olympians! They have been very kind in sharing their Olympic stories, medals, uniforms, mascots with all the classes. What a magnificent opportunity for both our students and staff to wear an Olympic gold medal (or two!). We also celebrated Green and Gold Day on Friday 30th July to support our Australian athletes – well done to everyone that dressed up!

Some important dates to remember this term is our Leeming Athletics Carnival being held on Friday 10th September. All students will be involved in the day’s activities and they get to represent their house group of either: Grady (blue), Findlay (red), Ramsdale (green) or Aulberry (yellow). We also have the ESSN Sports Carnival the following week on Friday 17th September which most of the school will be attending as well. Hoping we can perform well and claim back the trophy!
Our fantastic Notre Dame program has started with Year 10 and Year 9 students meeting their buddies last week. We look forward to seeing the different, individualised programs our students get to participate in. We always receive such great feedback from this program and expect nothing less this year.
Lots of exciting things to look forward to!
Phys Ed Team
It has been full STEAM ahead at Leeming SHS ESC with the commencement of our first ever after school STEAM club.
Partnering with Western Power for the Circuit Breaker Micro:bit program, we are the first Education Support setting to participate in the program.
Our students have absolutely loved learning to code with feedback like "it's amazing", "fabulous", "exciting" from our group of Coder Exploders, as we have come to call them.

Thanks to our dedicated STEAM committee staff who give up their own time out of hours to run the program.
If you would like more information on our STEAM journey or our "Coder Exploders" please contact Ms Caitlyn Knox via email: caitlyn.rasmussen@education.wa.edu.au
We congratulated Lauren Robinson at our recent assembly with the Employee of the Month award. Lauren has gained employment with the Ability Centre on Wednesdays, after a successful work experience placement. She works well within the team, sorting the recycled products. Lauren is increasing interactions with customers that approach her work bay. Amazing efforts by Lauren and we wish her all the very best with this employment.
Yujia Jiang has had a great start to the workplace learning program this term. At Brandon’s Shredding, Yujia has been shredding an outstanding number of bags each week and has been using great problem solving skills when the shredder is jammed and when the bags need changing over. Fantastic efforts!
This term we have been welcomed into some great new work environments; Jandakot Accident Repair Centre, ROAR Fitness, John Hughes Service Department, Gilberts Fresh Market and the State Library of WA.
Plans are well under way in preparation for the year 10 students to commence their very first work experience in term 4. We are looking forward to these students on their workplace goals.
