Term 2
As the students and staff know, this has been a long term filled with lots of exciting activities, new experiences and unfortunately, illness fuelled by cold weather and rampant viruses. There is a lot happening prior to next term and of course a busy term 3 ahead of us. I would like to thank our school community: students, families, agencies, employers and staff, the success of our school is based on collaboration, care and a shared vision. We are all excited to embed the Positive Behaviour Support philosophy into our school and keep moving forward to make our school the best it can be.
Camps
Year 7 and 8 students have enjoyed camps at Point Perron and Lake Leschenaultia this term. Students thoroughly enjoy camps and the opportunities to challenge themselves, developing their confidence and resilience. Thank you to all the wonderful staff who give up their time to take students on camp. Camps are an amazing and worthwhile experience for all of our students.
Staffing
We have a number of staff going on leave at the end of this term:
Mrs Randonich and Ms Trahorsch are soon to be new mums, we wish them both all the very best and look forward to meeting their beautiful babies later in the year.
Ms Ratto has taken a position for the rest of the year at School of Special Educational Needs; Disability, and will be supporting schools in the south metropolitan region. We wish you the very best in your new role and look forward to seeing you back at Leeming ESC in the future.
Ms FP will be on leave for the remainder of the school year and we look forward to her returning in 2022.
Reports
Reports will be sent home this week. Students have been involved in a range of exciting programs and learning experiences this semester, which are reflected in their report. Please take the time to read your child’s report and celebrate their achievements and success.
Term 2 has been a long term and I hope you all enjoy a safe and well-earned holiday break.
Evelyn Riley (Acting Principal)
The School Board met on June 14th and our discussions covered the following items:
- An update on the School Community Project from Chaplain Vangi. Contributions of cheese (sliced packets), muesli bars, crackers and margarine, long navy pants and jackets and girls underwear would be greatly appreciated from any in the school community who can donate.
- The responsibilities and roles of the School Board members was discussed and the board will undertake additional online training in the coming term and also complete a review of board operations.
- The Board is investigating Community Representatives to fill vacancies we have at the present time. Keran met with our local Member of Parliament Yaz Mubarakai to find pathways to potential community members.
- There was an update on the Parent Facebook page activity.
- The school website is being redesigned and we received information of the progress and reviewed quotations for the work.
- The School Review will take place in 2022 and planning is well underway for this process
- With Lakelands and Canning Vale education support units not being open until 2023 there will be enrolment pressures in 2022 for the school.
We always welcome feedback from parents to any of the school board representatives.
Thank you.

It feels like only yesterday that we were starting the 2021 school year and yet here we are at the half way mark! We have had a fantastic first semester and despite the cool weather we have kept ourselves really busy. Speaking of the cold, our class’s favourite new way of warming up is through our latest business enterprise, “Spice Boys” spicy barbeque rubs. We have spent this term adjusting and tasting our recipe and have finally produced a product we think is delicious. We have started selling our these around the school and have learnt a number of new skills that will help in the work place, such as interacting with customers and keeping records of which products are selling more. We are using this information to generate graphs to know which products are more popular for the future.
We want to wish all our families a safe and happy holiday break. We look forward to seeing you all in semester two. A huge thank you to the staff of ESC 1 for helping make this year so fantastic!
Term 2 has flown by in ESC 3. This term we went to AQWA as part of our Bush Ranger learning about ocean biodiversity. We completed projects about ocean animals and created a wall display of a coral reef in our room. We have also enjoyed our CBL excursions this term, and are looking forward to getting our letters in the mail that we posted on our last outing. We learnt about some amazing role models with disabilities, and shared our research with the whole school when we ran the assembly in week 10. We loved running assembly and using our public speaking skills. We have welcomed 2 new students into our room this term, and it has been awesome to make new friends! We have gotten to know each other better with our fun conversation starter cards. We have written our favourite parts of term two below:

Lachy: My favourite part of term 2 was catching public transport on CBL. My other favourite part of term was my pizza party when I turned 16!
Henry: My favourite thing this term was playing with my mainstream friends on the oval. My other favourite things was going to CBL at Bull Creek Shopping Centre.
Alyssa: My favourite parts of term 2 were CBL, AQWA, Crafts, Sport and the Water Corporation incursion. I also enjoyed running assembly.
Makenzie: My favourite thing was going to Leadership. Another favourite things were doing my Bush Rangers and doing assembly. I also enjoyed going to work experience at Striker.
Madison: My favourite part of this term was going to mainstream sport. My other favourite parts of term were going on CBL and making toasted sandwiches in class.
Aidan: My favourite part of term 2 is social skills and talking to my friends.
Molly: My favourite thing was going on CBL to the shops.
Ella: My favourite thing was working on my news with mum, and then presenting it to the class.
Skye: My favourite things this term were going on work experience and colouring in. I also liked having a pizza party for Lachy’s birthday.
Mathematics: My Year 10 mathematics lessons for most part of this term focused on cultivating students’ interest and understanding of fractions, place value, time, division of numbers and the concept of ‘quantity’. Students participated at varying degree of difficulties according to their individual strengths, needs and prior learning. It was delightful to observe students making gains from the variety of instructional approaches employed including concrete representational abstract (CRA), manipulatives, multisensory and simulations. These were supplemented with authentic learning experiences which provided them with the opportunities to transfer knowledge in different contexts. For example, students found the division activities fun and exciting as they used small chocolates and mini-Mentos to carry out division activities. This approach made what initially seemed to be a difficult concept fun and enjoyable for them. The most advanced students were extended: calculating incomes, expenditures, and savings. They set up a ‘shopping corner’ in their classroom, taking turns to play the roles of a customer and shop attendant, and by so doing consolidating and reinforcing on their money maths in ways that are meaningful and practical for them. Some students also had practical lessons on how to measure the various dimensions of objects accurately with a ruler.

English: This term, my students have been focusing on the various forms of writing, such as expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. In one of our persuasive writing tasks, the question “Do you like nachos or donuts?” was posed to them. In their responses, students presented a wide range of opinions on why they preferred one to the other but in all cases the arguments for or against were very strong and impressive. For example, one respondent observed that “I like nachos because they are crunchy, spicy and of course delicious”. The opportunities to share their work with each other not only brought to light the fact that we can learn from each other but also promoted collaborative learning and peer tutoring. Students took part in weekly spelling, reading comprehension and creative writing activities to encourage words decoding and fluency in translating thoughts to paper (including learning to use new words in their writing) as well as the retention of new vocabulary. In the past, writing was one of the least favoured activities for some of my students. However, the introduction of the predictable chart writing process has made writing fun and enjoyable for all because of its student-staff partnership. As the teacher, I provide a model sentence or sentence starter to which my students contribute one word, two or more. Each student makes the sentence as simple or complex as their writing development permits. This implies that the cohort of my students who are operating at a word level have been able to engage in productive writing such as “I like my iPad”, “I like Community-Based Learning”, “I can see my drink bottle”, “I want to see penguins” and working on developing their skills further. They have also had opportunities to practise filling out application forms.

Bush Rangers: The contents covered under the Bush Ranger course have expanded my students understanding of the concepts of ‘land’ and ‘water’ conservation. The lessons have given them the occasions to ponder about the degradation of environmental resources and the grim prospects it holds for future generations if the situation is not reversed. While undertaking comprehensive research on environmental protection, students found that it is tremendously important to reduce, reuse and recycle to conserve our water resource. Their study encompassed brainstorming the different uses of water both at home and school which further raised their awareness of the indispensability of water to human life and other life forms. When students were asked to identify ways to conserve water, they demonstrated a good grounding of the topic by sharing valuable suggestions including “fix leaking taps”, “have shorter showers”, “turn taps off when brushing your teeth” and so on. Apart from learning about water conservation, the students also learned about the threats to Australian biodiversity in contemporary times. The common findings from their research efforts identified bush fire, deforestation, flash flood and mining as some of the factors doing grave damage to our environment.

Wanjoo!
We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of the land and its waters and pay respect to their elders, past, present and emerging. ESC 5 have had a busy and long 11 week term and enjoyed the support of amazing volunteers, Henry Counsel and Adam Di Biase. We appreciate all the time and efforts that they have put into working with the staff and students in ESC 5.
This term the students worked cooperatively in groups to research ‘threatened species’ such as dingo, possum and the cockatoo. They discovered main threats to these animals are due to loss of habitat, no breeding, bush fires, feral animals and traffic. Students viewed organisations supporting these species (Cockburn Wetlands Centre, Tasmania Zoo and Kaarakin) and reported on breeding and tracking projects. Groups discussed their project ideas, voted, and respected the decision-making process to employ the Cockatoo Projects. The class have started in preparation for the Pop-Up Shops next term and have illustrated posters for a donation tin, and cards, to create an awareness and raise money to donate to Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre. Outstanding achievement!
This term we have also been working on a Family Tree project. The class thoroughly enjoyed learning about family traditions and cultures from around the world and shared many of their traditions. Students created a list of questions and interviewed family members to research their background, constructed a Family Tree and collated their researched findings into a digital representation of their history. Students enjoyed sharing their family history with their peers and shared where they were born and located countries, using Google Earth, a world globe and an atlas. The students researched different countries cultures and traditional recipes, including Australia’s Anzac Biscuits, Italian Pizza, Indian Bean Curry and French Crepes and worked with a small group to cook the recipes and enjoy a variety of traditional foods.

As part of a Science Water Conservation project the students participated in a Water Corporation Incursion, engaged in water investigations and hands on experiments. These included investigating ways water is used every day at home, school and in the community. The students followed a map to investigate and record leaking taps at school and concurs the importance of saving water for people and all living things on earth. We also had our New Beginnings to an Old Story event this term on the 27th of May. The students had the opportunity to participate in a number of fun activities such as badge making, binding and Erin from SERCUL came out to do talk about bush tucker. All the students really enjoyed the event and it was finished off with a sausage sizzle that all the students really enjoyed.

And lastly for the very busy term all the year 8 classes went on camp. We went to Lake Leschenaultia from Wednesday the 23rd June to Friday the 25th June. We participated in many fun activities such as bush survival skills, bonfire and toasting marshmallows, a spotlight walk and lots of time to play group games and socialise to become a united year 8 group.

Thank you to all the student and parents for making this a really fun and successful term. We hope you all have a fun and safe school holidays and look forward to seeing everyone in term 3.
Kind regards
Lorraine Vann, Mrs Blacklock, Miss Chatfield and Ms Palma
Term 2 has just flown by, it’s almost hard to believe we are on the cusp of semester 2 already! This term ESC 6 focused on a soft plastic recycling and conservation project through our Bush Ranger classes and CBL program. This class project also links to our ASDAN Key Steps program under the Environment module. Over the term, we learned all about human-made materials and plastic pollution. ESC 6 was shocked to learn how much plastic pollution there is, and the harms it has on our environment and marine life! During Bush Rangers, ESC 6 collected litter from round the centre and sorted the rubbish to identify soft plastics. We kept the soft plastics in our class REDcycle bin, and then took the soft plastics to Woolworths at Bull Creek shopping centre during CBL, and recycled it at the Woolworths REDcycle soft plastics bin. Awesome teamwork, Cadets! We are such USTARs!

I would also like to acknowledge Izzie Milgate who has been attending mainstream dance classes, twice a week, over the term. Izzie worked so hard to learn a mainstream choreographed dance, and performed at the year 8 Dance Showcase at the end of week 8. Well done, Izzie. This is such an achievement!
In week 10 we enjoyed our year 8 camp to Camp Leschenaultia, along with Mrs Vann and Miss Heard’s class. Everyone participated in a range of activities that encouraged independence, provided social and leadership opportunities, and developed confidence through unfamiliar and challenging tasks. We enjoyed visiting Lake Leschenaultia, the Bush Survival Skills incursion, and participating in bush art activities. We enjoyed playing at the Sculpture Park and our sausage sizzle. We went on a trip to Perth Hills Discovery Centre and participated in an Animal Encounters activity. Everyone demonstrated brilliant Bush Ranger cadet qualities during our trip to Karakamia when listening to an Ecologist presentation about wildlife. I am extremely proud of my class, and how brave and independent they all were during camp. It definitely showed me a new level of maturity, which is amazing to see!

We would also like to say a HUGE thank you and goodbye to Miss Trahorsch, as she leaves to go on her maternity leave. We are sad to see Miss Trahorsch go, but are so happy and excited for her as she enters motherhood for the first time! We hope to see her soon, and hopefully get a visit from her and her new baby boy next term.
Enjoy the holidays, and I look forward to seeing everyone again in term 3!
Miss Gage.

ESC 7 VICKY CHAMBERS & ESC 8 STEFFI VARGHESE
This term ESC 7 and ESC 8 have been learning all about recycling and caring for the environment. Both classes attended an excursion at the Henderson Waste Facility where they were shown where all our waste goes that can’t be recycled and how we need to reduce the amount we send there. Recycle Right from our local council came out to visit our classes and teach us how to correctly recycle our waste at home. They showed us the importance of food composting, re-using our old items and putting our rubbish into the correct bins. We also went on our Year 7 camp to Point Peron where all students excitedly set off for their first Leeming ESC camp! The students gave many different activities a go including climbing, archery, and crate stacking as well as completing their Bush Rangers beach clean-up.

Students and staff from ESC 9 went to Chins for lunch on Friday 18th June, for Miss Ratto’s last day. We walked from Leeming Senior High School to Chins Restaurant. When we arrived, we were taken to our table. We sat down and ordered a drink each and then got some prawn crackers to share. We then ordered our lunch. While waiting for our food, Miss Heard, Mrs Davies and Mrs Coles came to visit us and say farewell to Miss Ratto. We ate some delicious food. Our favourite dishes included honey chicken, mee goreng, chicken noodles and crispy chicken. We hope Miss Ratto enjoyed her lunch and we wish her luck in her new job. We will miss Miss Ratto but we are looking forward to having Miss Heard in our class.

Here are some messages from ESC 9 to Miss Ratto:

We hope you have a relaxing and safe holidays and we will see you in two weeks!
ESC 10 Team
Ms Knox, Mrs Brayne, Mrs T-J and Miss Russell
During our Science program, the students took part in a Water Corporation incursion. We engaged in activities where we looked at how water is used every day at home and at school. The students investigated and recorded leaking taps and considered ways we could save water within our environment.
We had our New Beginnings to an Old Story incursion where our students had the opportunity to engage in a number of hands-on fun activities such as badge making, yarning and learning about bush tucker. It was a fabulous day which finished off with a sausage sizzle which everyone enjoyed.
As part of our Peaceful Kids program, we have been learning how to calm our bodies and minds while listening to calming music. We count our breath during meditation to help us to quiet our bodies to enable us to focus and better engage with our learning. This allows us time to think about the things we are grateful and thankful for and then complete our gratitude diary writing.
Time is flying by. We are now half way through our year; one semester down, one semester to go. Staff in our room this semester as always, have been awesome. A big thank you to Ms Sutherland, Ms Bregger and Ms Smith who work tirelessly to assist with our students. We could not work as well without them.
Enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing your gorgeous kids next term, relaxed, refreshed and ready to learn for a busy term three.
Kind regards,
Ms Samantha Scarle
Time has gone so quick and it is hard to believe that it is half way through the year already. It has been yet another busy term in ESC 13. Students had the opportunity to listen to an engaging talk by the Water Corporation. We’ve learned so much about how we can reduce water wastages in and around the house.

As part of Bush Rangers, we have been focusing on biodiversity and how we can protect our natural environment. To complement our knowledge, we went to the Museum. It was such an amazing day. Many of the exhibits were interactive and they saw pre-historic creatures like dinosaurs and the changes to earth over time. We also learned about the impact on mining on our lands and how it causes of changes in biodiversity and the impact of pollution on our environment.

As part of the Peaceful Kids program, we have also been learning to use to listen and count our breath in our meditation. Students shared all the little things they are worried about. We used the strategies cards to generate ideas on how to manage their fears. We have also been learning about being grateful and thankful for what we have. These are what some of them wrote:
Brandon: I am grateful for my hair
Liam: I am grateful for my friends and being able to spend time with them.
Lauren: I am grateful for my dog and cat. My animals make me feel loved and that I am not scared of anything around me. I am also grateful for the artists like Billie Ellish and Post Malone as they all inspire me.
Luka: I am grateful for my family and how I can see them everyday.
Thomas: I am grateful for soccer and I enjoy riding my bike, eating pizza and being able to read books.
Tania: I’m grateful for Mum, Dad and chocolate.
Corey: I am grateful for Mum and all the wonderful teachers at Leeming ESC who takes care of me.
Elle: I am grateful for the soldiers who fought in the war so we would be able to live in this country and feel safe.
Kane: I am grateful for my family and video games and all technology.
Aiden: I am grateful for my parents, Linkin Park, Dare’s and God.
On behalf of all the staff, we are so grateful for the wonderful bunch of students from our ESC 13 class!
This term, year 12 students were lucky enough to visit the new Boola Bardip WA Museum. As part of our Bush Ranger program, students have been learning about biodiversity and how we can protect our natural environment. There were amazing hands-on activities incorporating interactive, digital technology exhibits that showed changes to Earth over time. We also learnt about various organisations that are trying to minimise the impact of practises such as mining, and measures they are taking to assist in reducing pollution.

Students received amazing client feedback from those that purchased their glitter slime, noisy putty, and relaxing bath salts and bombs. All products sold out quickly, and a generous donation will be made to their charity of choice; The Animal Protection Society of W.A.
Graduation preparations are well under way, with students having their gown fittings this week, ready for the big night in November. More information regarding the location and night’s proceedings will be released shortly: watch this space!
Congratulations to Max Edmonds, who won the school’s PBS poster competition for senior school, with his colourful USTAR design. Awesome work, you are a star!
From Miss Megrail and team
This term has been a long one, everyone has done so well considering that there have been some nasty bugs going around too.
We have been lucky enough to have a couple of camp fires this term where we learned about campfire safety, lighting a fire and how to roast marshmallows. It was smoky and a bit smelly but fun and the marshmallows were delicious.

We also got to go on the Optus Stadium Tour, which was amazing! The Eagles were training while we were there which meant we couldn’t take photos of the players or see their lockers. We did get to see the Dockers lockers and their recovery pools. We were able to ride the freight lifts and see how it all works behind the scenes.

We are almost on holidays, wishing everyone an enjoyable holiday and a very well deserved break.
Wow! How quick has the time flown by. To think that we are half way through the year already. It feels like only last week I was getting to know my awesome class in ESC 17. It is clear that all the students have been working very hard this term and deserve a well earnt break.
This term we have successfully conducted work skills interviews with different staff around the school, begun to create our own stories in literacy, and have learnt about Australian and indigenous history through celebrations such as reconciliation day and NAIDOC week. The students have also learnt about healthy eating and exercise in Health class and have been doing physical activity lessons every Tuesday. There have been a few sore muscles from all the push ups I think.

The boys have learnt so many new life skills in option classes whether it be D&T, cooking, music, sport, art, craft or digitec. Every student has displayed a positive attitude to their class work and is trying their best each and every day. I look forward to seeing the great work continue into next term.

I would lastly like to thank all parents and staff for their tireless work this term. You have all been very supportive to both myself and the students, and have helped to create a great working environment for the kids.
Enjoy your break and I look forward to seeing you all next term.
SPECIALIST TEACHER DEEPIKA KHOSLA
Protective Behaviours (Years 7-10)
During the SoSafe lessons the students practiced using ‘Consent’ in different scenarios. I am so proud of my students as can see them using the SoSafe language’ Ok, Not OK, Consent and No Consent’ and applying their knowledge in day to day language. The students have started learning about different relationships in their life and have been focussing on the most important relationship in their life, their family. It has been amazing to hear the wonderful things their families do for them and interesting things they came up with what they can do for their families. So look out during the holidays for the special gestures your child does for you. Please encourage them to participate in home chores to enable them to understand the importance of being part of the family.
Home Economics (Years 7-9)
Home Economics lessons focussed on using the oven for baking. The students made sweet treats like Apple Turnovers, Scones with jam and cream, and cupcakes. It’s been a long term and the students have worked. They have participated in following instructions, following the recipe, using the oven gloves while using the oven safely. The students have also learnt to measure ingredients using measuring cups and spoons. Well done Year 7, 8 and 9 students!

Craft (Years 7-10)
Craft lessons have been fun doing STEAM Projects. The students explored habitats and created a habitat for aquatic creatures. Lots of strategies were used to create the habitat, the students did sensory painting, yarning, blow painting and tin foil embossing. The students also participated in making symmetrical patterns to create the different parts of the body of a fish using Direct Instruction. To end the term the students created masks for a Masquerade Party in Week 11.

We would like to extend our warm and heartfelt THANKS to both Indigo and Phoenix Big W.
Indigo gifted our centre with several wonderful books, which our students used during our recent “Leeming Link” Reading Café.
THANK YOU Indigo!
Our students thouroughly enjoyed reading and looking through the books. A highlight being the yoga poses, from “Zenzoo” the Merry Meerkat’s Yoga Time.

Phoenix Big W gifted our centre with 2 Café presses, which will be used for Leeming Link to make our toasted sandwiches. ‘Toasties’ are always a hit with our students especially on those cold winter days!
A shower curtain was also donated, which will be very helpful in our toilets/showers.
THANK YOU BIG W!

Leeming ESC are very grateful for your gifts, and they will be used often and will be of great benefit to our students. We appreciate your generosity, so very much.
Warmest regards,
Cathy Houden and Ms Vangi
We have been very busy socialising, playing, learning, and creating during our Leeming Link program this term.
The wintery weather forced a few changes in the timetable, but this didn’t stop us from having fun and learning together, both indoors and outdoors.
One of the highlights were our very own piñatas, made from start to finish by our students. Look out for our photos of the piñata process. We think our students enjoyed the smashing part the most!

Some of our other activities enjoyed in the 2nd half of Term 2 were:
Making Bird Feeders, Hockey, Soccer, Making Damper, Reading Café, WA Day Bunting, and AUSLAN Signing.
We look forward to seeing many of our students participating in Leeming Link next term. Keep an eye out for the new timetable in our next newsletter.
“Leeming Link” is run 3 days a week – Mon, Tues & Thurs during Recess and Lunch.

Kind regards,
Cathy Houden & Vangi Evangeli

This term the PBS team facilitated a whole-school competition and asked each class of Leeming SHS ESC to help us by creating a poster or posters to somehow represent our USTAR values. Entrants were encouraged to create a mascot or logo that represents the expectations and our school culture. We were so pleased with all the entrants from the poster competition and would like to congratulate the runner ups and winners!
Middle School Runner Up: Phillip Ugle
Middle School Winner: Goldie Lawrence-Fitzgerald
Senior School Runner Up: Nekoda Abrahams
Senior School Winner: Max Edmonds

The PBS team and our Art experts will now be working hard to design a Leeming ESC PBS logo/mascot to represent our USTAR values.

Leeming ESC was represented by 2 teams at the annual Kalamunda Basketball Carnival held recently at Ray Own Stadium. It was there biggest carnival to date with over 500 students from various Education Support Schools attending. There were some great skills on display and fantastic teamwork between the players. We won some and lost some but always showed amazing sportsmanship. The students were respectful and had such a positive attitude when they stepped on to the court. Well done to all students and staff for making the day such a success! Special mention to our medal winners: Oscar, Patrick, Liam and Kane

Neon Tribe Dance Group
The Year 8 Dance group have been practising hard over the last 2 terms to put together a dance performance. They call themselves the “Neon Tribe” due to their glow in the dark costumes and face paint. They performed at the latest assembly and everyone was blown away with their great dance moves. Thank you to the staff for helping get the costumes and students ready for the day and a big congratulations to the students who conquered their fears and performed in front of an audience. Was the greatest show!

Jayelan Lee is our very first student to engage in work experience at the State Library. The library shared with Jayelan a sneak peek to the ‘behind the scenes’ importance this library plays in preserving the history of our state. He will be gaining experience in the cultural resources department for the duration of his placement.
This is what he has to say about his experience so far: "Thanks for the opportunity at the State Library. It was awesome to see (the) collection of published and unpublished historical pieces, particularly really old books. Loved it! Take the time to check it out!" - Jayelan Lee

Congratulations to Cris Dawson who received our Employee of the Month award at our assembly. Cris has shown great dedication to work experience at Runabout Metals. He has demonstrated a high level of engagement and attendance each shift. He has maintained safe practices with the use of machinery. Cris is to be commended for increasing his work hours throughout the placement. Through Cris's hard work he has been offered paid weekend work with this employer. Congratulations Cris!
We wish Tyler Lim all the very best with his post school employment with McDonalds. Tyler is completing his final placement for his certificate in Automotive over the school holidays, good luck Tyler. We know he is doing amazing job in the workplace!
