Here we are at the end of a shortened term one. We have achieved so much in such a short amount of time and I am so proud of all the students in ESC1. We have made an awesome start to the Workright program, doing work experience at school and at Striker Leisure and Rec Centre. The students have taken to the program amazingly and we are so grateful to have our supervisor Glenda supporting us. We have completed a number of jobs, including cleaning the gym equipment, vacuuming the netball courts, general cleaning of the canteen area and stocking the shelves with food and drinks for customers. A huge thank you to all the staff involved with making this program run so effectively and special thanks to Mrs Carter, Mrs Long and Mrs Lester-Smith for all their assistance in making the start to this term so smooth.
We have also started our journey with the My Plan documents. Students have done some preliminary work in class which they were able to bring to their first My Plan meeting and share with our families and guests. All of our meetings were incredibly positive and it has been a pleasure sharing this experience with our dedicated families and support staff.
We would like to wish the entire Leeming SHS ESC community a safe and happy holiday period and look forward to continuing the great start in term 2.
ESC 2 has had an absolutely amazing first term! The students have achieved so much in what feels like a blink of an eye. We have now completed all of our My Plan meetings between parents, students and myself, and they were just fantastic. Our year 11’s have some really clear goals with what they want to achieve in school and at the work place. Two of our students have become independent in the workplace and another two are getting employment offers for later in the year. How amazing is that!
We were lucky enough to visit Sculptures by the Sea this term. The students were very excited to go and see all the amazing artwork created down on the beach.
In between all of the work place learning, CBL and certificate courses our students have been involved in, we have managed to spend some time in class completing our Maths & Literacy Programs. We have been talking about rules in school for literacy and creating some online brochures with all of the information they have collected. We have also just finished planning our class party for maths. The students have planned everything from how much money we needed to spend, the healthy food we bought and even created the party itinerary.
We are looking forward to a fun term 2 in ESC 2. I would like to thank all of the students for the continued effort they have put into all of their work. And also a very special thanks to our EAs in the room, Miss Hackett, Mrs Putland, Mrs McCaskie and Mr Borges, for the amazing work they have done this term!
The students in ESC 3 have had a fantastic first term. We have commenced work experience at Striker Recreation Centre and are enjoying the different roles and responsibilities we are taking on. Students have developed their creative writing skills and written narratives. We have also been working on our addition, subtraction and multiplication. We have started working towards our business enterprise, with lots of exciting things in the works! In Bush Rangers, we have created a presentation on water conservation, and shared this with a year 7 class to educate them on saving water. Below, we have recorded our favourite parts of term 1:
Makenzie: My favourite part in term 1 was my certificate course and that I learned my 3 times tables. I also like work experience because I like working in the canteen. I enjoyed writing my story called ‘The Stolen Red Ruby.’
Alyssa: My favourite thing I liked was swimming on Fridays. I liked going to Strikers for Workright and I made my My Plan.
Henry: My favourite thing about term 1 is hanging out with Raymond, Alyssa, Makenzie and Karleigh. My other favourite thing is having work experience at Strikers and doing my My Plan meeting with Miss Blackburn and my Dad.
Ella: My favourite part of term 1 is dancing. Every Tuesday in period 3 I dance with my friends. I also love to sing along to the songs.
Skye: My favourite thing in term 1 was colouring in. I have been learning to write. I wrote a story about dragons.
Lachy: I liked swimming in the deep water this term. I liked going to work at Strikers. I liked writing a story about a witch and a wizard that lived under the sea.
Aidan: I have enjoyed communicating with my friends. I spoke in front of my tute group to teach them about how to use my AAC device to interact with me. I have enjoyed swimming and yoga this term.

This term, my students have been participating in Workright, an ASDAN program designed to prepare them for life in the workplace after school. It covers a wide range of work-related skills such as; Health and Safety in the Workplace, Being responsible in the Workplace, Working with others in the Workplace and You at Work. As part of the delivery of this program, students have been going to Striker Indoor Sports & Fitness business in Leeming every Wednesday. By undertaking a wide range of jobs in the Gym and Cafeteria areas of the business (under strict supervision) students have been given the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in the workplace and what it means to work together as a team. The Striker business experience complements other in-school learning activities aimed at preparing them for their main work placement (Workplace Learning) commencing in Term 4.

ESC 4 students, as participants in the Bush Ranger Cadets program have identified that responsible waste management is essential to environmental conservation and sustainability. Serving as untiring advocates of environmental protection, students went from classroom to classroom this term to spread the message of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. They undertook a recycling project which encompassed conducting a comprehensive research and analysis of the environmental impacts of waste. The cadets also reused polystyrene esky boxes that were thrown away by some supermarkets as garden beds to grow various types of vegetables and herbs to demonstrate one way that reducing, reusing and recycling waste protects the environment.

ESC 4 adopted a professional approach to setting up their own small business this term. They chose a business idea (making Toilet Soap from natural ingredients), business name (Natural Temptations) and collected environmental information (administered survey to staff) to gauge staff interest in their products to determine if the business will be viable or not. The outcome of the survey demonstrated staff strong interest in five variants of the soap including (1) honey soap with cinnamon and oats, (2) Oatmeal soap with lavender, (3) Olive oil soap with lemongrass, (4) ginger, Lavender soap and (5) Goat’s Milk soap with patchouli. A number of staff have already pre-ordered which speaks volume of the popularity of this business amongst members of our school community (staff). The income generated from this business will be split in two parts – one portion will go to a charity organisation while the other half will be for classroom use. Students have responded positively to this authentic and non-compartmentalization approach to learning which involved drawing on skills from different areas including Mathematics (calculating the expenses and profit, conducting surveys, plotting graphs of how many people needed a particular type of soap, etc) and English (recording sales and speaking confidently to potential customers). It has been a very productive term and I wish all students and staff a happy and safe break. Happy Easter everyone!
Wow… how time flies. I can’t believe that it is almost the end of the term. ESC 13 have hit the ground running and in spite of the short term, have covered so much ground. Students have been busy sharpening their maths skills through the CBL and Enterprise programs and working hard at identifying skills and qualities they need to be work ready.
As part of our Bush Ranger program, we have been learning about conservation and what they can do to protect our planet. On 22nd March, we went to the Canning Vale Recycling Facility. Here are comments from our students:
Liam: I like seeing how the rubbish is sorted and seeing it happen in front of me.
Lauren: My favourite part was looking through the window and looking at how the different machines work.
Kane: I like seeing the worm farm and how it is used in the garden.
Tania: I like looking at what happens to our rubbish.
Thomas: Our tour guide is so clever. He told us about how we can recycle better.
Luka: I like seeing the compost garden and learning about the fogo bins.
Corey: I like seeing how the big machines sort the rubbish.

Our students have been actively involved in planning and running the enterprise program. The students brainstormed lots of ideas and one of the ideas was to create dog biscuits. The class decided to name their company the ‘The Wonderful Dog Shop’. The first round of sales was a hit and we sold over 300 biscuits, we plan to donate the proceeds to an animal rescue group. We are taking a break from producing dog biscuits but will certainly come back towards the end of term 2. Next term we will be undertaking another enterprise. We will be selling personalised aprons and have been producing little scented bottles, perfect for Mother’s Day. So watch this space.
It is so heart-warming to see more of our students reaching their milestones so early in the year. Congratulations to Thomas and Corey for gaining employment at Activ, Tania for securing a work trial at Activ, Aiden doing remarkably well at his job at Containers for Cash, Ellie and Liam for making good progress through their Activ Internship program and Lauren, Kane and Luka making wonderful inroads at school and at work. Congratulations also to Kane for winning the Most Valuable Player at the Interschool Cricket Carnival. We are so proud of all of you.
Ms Parwani, Mrs Smithson, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Hales and Mrs Cox.
Wanjoo!
We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of the land and its waters and pay respect to their elders, past, present and emerging.
ESC 5 have had a busy term and enjoyed the support of amazing volunteers, Henry Counsel and Adam Di Biase. Look for Mr Di Biase as he is featured below.
The students have completed an ‘Identity Project’ and during this self-discovery journey, learnt that we are all unique and special. They identified their bodies and facial features, skills, qualities and recognised that these facts shape their character and how they behave. During this project, the students identified how they demonstrate the schools USTAR values; Unity, Self-responsibility, Team work, Achievement and Respect. The students compiled their learning into a profile portfolio. Congratulations to all students on their very impressive portfolio. Well done!

The end of the term also brings the end to the mBot coding robotics project. The students continued to increase their technology skills and used their knowledge and skills to support their year 9 peers to build their mBot model and access the coding, to program their robots. Everyone has been fully engaged and rewarded with an end of term excursion to Scitech.

In Bush Rangers, the students worked collaboratively to research environmental threats and voted to implement a Black Cockatoo Conservation Project. They decided to share information and get involved in the Cocky Count project, create a donation tin, write and illustrate a book, create posters and cards to sell at the ‘Pop Up Shop’. The funds they raise will be donated to ‘Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre’ and the ‘Perth Zoo Conservation Project’. These are two very worthy causes and we are incredibly proud of the students work.

Term 1 has just zoomed past and we can’t believe how much learning we’ve managed to squeeze in. The ESC 6 students have settled in beautifully at Leeming ESC, and it has been wonderful to see everyone reconnect with their friends and peers, and begin to demonstrate some year 8 maturity and resilience. This term, one of our highlights has been our Science program, focusing on materials. I have been so impressed with my class and their science understanding and inquiry skills demonstrated throughout the lessons. We have learned about a range of materials and the different properties to describe the way different materials feel, such as hard, soft, heavy, light, bumpy, smooth, etc. We explored the different materials used to build our school such as metal, plastic, glass and wood, and have learned about whether certain materials are magnetic or if they can float or not. This term, we also celebrated and learned about St Patrick’s Day and Harmony Day. We wrote down all the things we feel lucky to have, which was a lovely activity to show our gratitude. For Harmony Day, we paired up with peers in our class, and identified the many similarities and differences between one another, to recognise the diversity in our own class. We have also been enjoying our option classes this term, including music, dance, D&T, home ec, PE, art and DigiTech.
Have a look at the photos below of our science program, and the many other term 1 highlights from the year 8.2 students.

We are looking forward to term 2, as we have many exciting things coming up, including the year 8 camp, but first let’s enjoy the well-deserved two week break. Happy Easter!

Wow, Term 1 has got off to a busy start in ESC 9. We welcomed Miss Heard and Miss Mitchell into our classroom, and of course spent week 1 wearing our masks! We have been learning how to create exciting recounts based on true events, using place value to partition numbers and using respectful language to communicate our likes and dislikes. This week, we also begin our CBL outings! I am so proud of how each student has transitioned into year 8 and the kindness and respect they have shown towards others. You are awesome ESC 9!
Miss Ratto

What a beautiful start we have had in ESC 9! I am lucky enough to teach students on a Monday and Tuesday this year. We have been learning about lots of different things, including telling the time, types of environments, healthy/unhealthy food and mindfulness in peaceful kids. We have also started a step challenge, where students wear a “stepper watch” each day and have a daily step goal, which is recorded on our “step challenge map.” It’s fantastic to see students challenging themselves and incorporating more steps/movement into their school day. A big thank you to Miss Mitchell for creating our beautiful map which is on display in our classroom.
Well done to all students for settling in so nicely & working hard during class! I am looking forward to an enjoyable and successful year.
Miss Heard

The second part of this term has continued to fly by, as these extremely clever group of year 7’s become more familiar with high school life. Many of our students independently attend options classes, as well as tute with the mainstream school. We have been so impressed with their resilience and positive attitude towards change and ‘never give up’ approach to learning.

In the classroom, ESC 10 has been focusing on chemical reactions in science, measurement and geometry in mathematics, persuasive writing in English and family connections and identity in HASS. This is just a snapshot of how busy we have been! The students have also have been enjoying some cross-curricular activities in STEAM, using their inquiry and processing skills as a team.

As part of their options classes, the students have been equally busy. In home economics with Mrs Khosla, the students have been making some delicious meals such as wraps and nachos (which were a BIG hit), in art with Miss Healey they are continuing to investigate sea life and ways to print different shapes. As part of phys ed, the students are learning some cricket skills; including catching and throwing.

The ESC 10 crew are very much looking forward to term 2, which includes our year 7 camp to Point Peron and cannot wait to try a whole bunch of new activities.
But for now, we would like to wish you a fun-filled and safe break; you have all earned it!
Happy Easter everyone.

ESC 11 has had an eventful first term. We have had a successful start to the class business enterprise, “Sweet, Savoury, Selection” where we make muffins and sell them to staff. The students have also successfully taken orders and delivered ANZAC glasses/candle holders to commemorate ANZAC Day. These were so successful ESC 11 donated $300 to ANZAC Cottage during our recent excursion. The excursion was very informative and both staff and students enjoyed learning about the history behind the cottage and the family who it was built for.

ESC 11 has a planned excursion to Fremantle War Memorial to commemorate ANZAC Day. We are organising the ANZAC Day assembly and have approached the mainstream HASS department to join us in this commemoration.
During term two both staff and students will continue to work towards achieving your child’s goals and outcomes.
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday.
What an exciting term we have had. We have been learning about personal hygiene and 'Glittery Germs'. We have learnt that most of the students in our class do not like using glitter and have voted to greatly limit the use of it in our classroom. We touched pieces of bread with clean and dirty hands and watched it over a ten-day period to see what grew on it. The students were surprised at the difference. With the Glittery Germ and bread experiments we now understand the importance of washing our hands carefully.

Thanks to Mrs Vann & her year 8 class for allowing us to join them with their Robotics lessons. We have had fun building and learning how to make our mBots move with the remote controls and with our coding. We concluded these lessons with a fun excursion to Scitech.

We ended our swimming lessons for the term with our swimming carnival and fun day at Trigg Beach last Friday. It was lovely to see all the students having a ball in the surf and all of them getting involved in the activities that were provided. The smiles on their faces were lovely.

Thank you for your support this term and to Ms Michelle Smith and Ms Madison Sutherland for their assistance along the way. I wish you all a very Happy Easter and safe and restful holiday ready for a busy and exciting term two.
Keep safe.
Ms Scarle

Well what a busy start to the year it has been. The term may have only gone for eight weeks, however I think the boys and staff in ESC 17 are looking forward to having a well-deserved break.
The boys have taken part in swimming down the beach every Friday finishing with a fantastic beach carnival day at Trigg beach last Friday. The students toured the lifesaving facilities, played beach games and enjoyed swimming and catching some waves on the paddle boards.
The boys have also been on two CBL trips to Cockburn Gateways, learning how to compare prices of different items between Coles and Woolworths. Each student has also enjoyed buying their own lunch. Meat boxes and kebab with chips have been a real favourites of the boys.
We have been very creative in class creating numerous pieces of Aboriginal art to coincide with learning about different dreamtime stories. The boys have created a rainbow serpent, different Australian birds, rock art and completed some dot paintings. The class is looking very colourful.
We have all enjoyed a very busy term, and look forward to what next term will bring, with a camp on the horizon.
Thank you to all parents and staff for working collaboratively to help the year run smoothly so far.
Enjoy your break

We welcomed some fabulous new workplaces this term: The Happy Pet Place, East Fremantle Football Club and The Ability Centre. These host employers have been very grateful to have our students join their team and have valued each student and their work contributions. The students are gaining valuable industry work skills.
We wish everyone a very Happy Easter and enjoy the break… get ready for an exciting term 2!
