The 2021 school year is now well under way after an interesting and disruptive start to the school year. I would like to welcome new families to our school community and congratulate all students for the way they have quickly settled into the school year. Our year 7 students are enjoying their new school environment and programs at Leeming SHS ESC, adjusting extremely well to the expectations of a high school student. Thank you to staff and families for supporting the smooth transition to high school for these students.
We welcome a number of new staff members in 2021, and are very excited to have such a dedicated group join our Leeming ESC community. Dylan Geiles, our school psychologist works on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Dylan is already very involved in a number of staff and student wellbeing initiatives and committees such as Positive Behaviour Support, Be You and the Leeming Link program at recess and lunch. It is great to have Dylan as our permanent school psychologist and he will be a valued member of our school community.

On Friday 19 February, our year 12 students enjoyed their school ball at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. Thank you to Ms Megrail and Ms Parwarni for organising the school ball and to the many staff that assisted on the night. Your organisation and support was amazing and I have had wonderful feedback from all the Leeming SHS staff on how fantastic our students were on the night. Thank you Ms Payne for the beautiful photos of an enjoyable night to remember.

Government Assistance is available to families to assist with purchasing books, uniforms and the payment of fees. Applications must be made through the Education Support Centre office before Thursday 1st April 2021.
Parents or legal guardians who hold one of the following cards from Centrelink, valid during first term, are eligible to make a claim under the scheme.
- Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
- Centrelink Health Care Card – this is a family card only, not for a specific child for medication purposes e.g. “CDA” (Child Disability Allowance) card
- Or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card. (Not TPI or TPI Gold Cards)
The School allowance (paid to the school) under the Additional Assistance in 2021 is:
Year 7-12 $235.00 per student
(This amount is deducted from the parental contribution when it is paid, therefore parents need only to pay the balance of their contribution when making the Secondary Assistance Application).
The school uniform subsidy (paid to the parent) is $115.00 per student.
The School Board had the first meeting for 2021 on February 22nd. We welcomed two new members to the Board, Karen Houghton and Bernadette McCarthy and we appreciate the time they are giving and their input into our deliberations.
We also acknowledge and thank our community representative Jane Devenyns who has retired from the Board following a long and valued membership. We thank Jane for her wise counsel and will very much miss her contribution to our meetings.
At our meeting we discussed, among other things, the new Statement of Expectations which is an agreement between the Director General of Education and the school. We reviewed the feedback we received from the Parent survey carried out in 2020, had an update on the many capital works projects that are happening on the campus, finalised the budget for 2021 and discussed ways of extending our welcome to new families into the school community.
Our school chaplain Vangi updated the board on the community project. The families at our school have been so generous in donations to support other families in the school community and we are in need of the following:
- cheese slices (not blocks please)
- margarine
- museli bars
- cheese and cracker snack packs
- ham
- navy shorts XL sizing
Kind regards to all

Following an unusual start to the school year staff and students have settled into the 2021 school year quickly. Part of my role in Student Services is to manage therapists visiting our school. As our student population grows, and more students are accessing therapists with their NDIS funding, we have a lot of therapists on site to manage. Leeming ESC appreciates the contribution that therapy services can make to the lives of our students. It is however becoming quite challenging both for administration and classroom teachers to manage the number of therapists coming through our doors. So parents are also aware, I wanted to share some of our school procedures regarding therapists.
- All therapists need to meet with myself if they are visiting Leeming SHS ESC for the first time. During this meeting I will go through our therapist guidelines, ask them to complete our school paperwork and also check their Working With Children card.
- For therapy to be delivered onsite, all therapist outcomes need to align with student IEP or My Plan outcomes.
- Therapy needs to be delivered in the classroom. In this way, teachers and therapists can work on outcomes together.
- Therapy should not take place before 11.15am. This is so that our whole school programmes, including Direct Instruction, are not interrupted.
Prior to COVID 19, therapists were allocated a specific day to visit students (i.e. Years 7 – 9 were Wednesdays after 11.15am and Years 10 – 13 were Fridays after 11.15am). Post COVID 19 therapists were spread across the week however I am in the process of revising our procedures and returning to an allocated day for therapists. I will let you know more information about this as this is formalised.
Please do not hesitate to contact me here at the school if you have any questions regarding therapists.

While it feels like we have only just begun, we have hit the half way mark for term 1 in 2021! We have hit the ground running in ESC 1 by getting straight in to our Workright program for this year. We are learning about health and safety rules in the workplace and things we can do in the event of an emergency. We have also been learning about practical skills for work, including work skills and taking part in a school recycling program. Students have begun sorting paper for shredding and delivering bags of shredded paper to various areas of the school for different projects. We have also interacted with different parts of the school while collecting the paper and have met lots of different school staff.
It has been a pleasure getting to meet the 2021 ESC 1 class. We have learnt so much about each other through the My Plan process, where we are learning how we are all connected to different groups, activities we all enjoy and places we enjoy going. These My Plan documents will be shared with parents in our upcoming My Plan meetings and I know the students have taken a lot of pride in putting together these documents.
I would like to thank Mrs Long, Mrs Carter, Mrs Lester-Smith and Mrs Brennan for all their hard work in getting our class up and running to such a high standard. Their support has been hugely appreciated and their dedication to the class has been amazing!
Our students have had a fantastic start to the year. Our first 4 weeks have been filled with lots of learning, exploration of ourselves and plenty of fun! Students have thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Fun Fridays’ where we compete in team building battles and STEM activities!
We are looking forward to our CBL trips coming up very soon and all of the learning we have ahead of us.
Mr Holdsworth
Our ESC 3 students have transitioned well into the Senior School this term. We have been enjoying starting the year with swimming lessons at the beach! Our students have been learning about a range of topics in class including internet safety, money, communication, narratives, the Zones of Regulation and social skills. We are very excited to be starting work experience at Striker next week, and have been busy learning many different skills that we need for the workplace. In our class, we have had a focus on mindfulness and gratitude, and are enjoying the opportunity to choose different kinds of mindful breaks depending on how we feel. We are recording things that we are grateful for in our gratitude diaries, and also sharing our gratitude for others in the class.
We have been very busy preparing for our My Plan meetings, by thinking about all the different aspects of our lives, and our hopes for the future. All of our ESC 3 students should be very proud of the fantastic start they have made to year 10.

It has been a productive and positive start to the 2021 school year in the ESC 4. After the 5 day lockdown and the mask requirement that came with it, students returned to school in high spirits and with extra enthusiasm – perhaps, their own way of showing appreciation for being able to breathe freely without a mask, a reality that we often take for granted! Our class is blessed with a strong, cohesive and highly dedicated team of staff consisting of Lauren Temple, Melinda Banks, Toni Broadhurst, Tetiana Rieutska and I as the leader of the team.
We have adopted an integrated approach to literacy and numeracy instruction in the ESC 4. Students have been engaged in a wide range of activities in literacy and numeracy according to their individual learning needs. As part of our literacy program, we encourage our students to dream or plan for the future in acknowledgement of the fact that “dreams can become a reality when we possess a vision that is characterized by the willingness to work hard, a desire for excellence, and a belief in our right and our responsibility to be equal members of society”. Towards this end, each student crystallises his/her vision ideas and eventually formulate a written vision on a personal vision board. Thus, by making their vision clear and visible reminds students each day to work hard towards accomplishing their individual goals for the future. Students have also had opportunities to practise resume writing in preparation for future employment.
Our community access program comprises school and community components. So far this term, students have been undertaking pre-requisite lessons in preparation for their going into the community. They also learned various functional numeracy skills such as money, number sense and Statistics and Probabilities.
The Bush Rangers Cadet Program has been a favourite amongst students because of the outdoor and hands-on opportunities it provides. This term, students have been working on the concept of environmental conservation (protection, preservation, management, or restoration of the natural environments and the ecological communities being sustained). Working as a team, the year 10 cadets have conducted an environmental assessment of the Leeming Senior High School/ESC site and recommended the construction and installation of bird feeders on trees in selected areas of the school. I commend the cadets for their initiative and unwavering determination to make a difference in our community. Well done!

Students have also been learning about workplace safety and online safety this term under our Workright and E-Safety Programs. While broadening their understanding of workplace safety, they learned about the duties/responsibilities of employers and employees and came to the awareness that workplace health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. During online safety lessons, students brainstormed ideas for keeping their private and personal information safe.

Wanjoo!
“We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of the land and its waters and pay respect to their elders, past, present and emerging."
ESC 5 would like to warmly welcome back year 8 students and their families. It has been lovely to see the students reconnecting with each other and this bond is enhancing their skills to work collaboratively in pairs and small groups, this year.
We are very fortunate to welcome back Mrs Blacklock and celebrate Ms Palma and Miss Chatfield joining our team. Also, this term, Adam Di Biase is volunteering on a Wednesday and Friday and he has been a great support making connections with all the students. On Thursdays, Henry Counsel, a student from Willetton Senior High School will be joining us as part of his work placement. We are very lucky and thank these wonderful young men, for being a role models to our male students.
The student’s technology skills has provided them with independence to access work activities on the Connect Grid. These skills have also, increased the student’s achievements in building a mBot model and accessing a computer software coding program, to activate their robots. Everyone was fully engaged and worked through the step-by-step processes to build their own mBot. The students have been coding it to flash a sequence of colours, play tunes and move around the floor in all directions. The students are already teaching me new ways of working with the mBot and I am continually amazed at their skills.

In Bush Rangers, the students are working collaboratively, in teams to research different environmental threats and determine the class Conservation Project for this semester. They have started the decision-making process to select the class project. So, stay tuned, it is very exciting to have the students driving the decisions in this project and will know their preference, in the next few weeks.

We would like to acknowledge and thank, each student. They have returned and settled straight back into routine and are to be commended on the high standard of positive teamwork and responsibility displayed. Well done!
We look forward to a busy and exciting year.
Kind regards
Lorraine Vann, Mrs Blacklock, Miss Chatfield, and Ms Palma.
Welcome back to an already exciting and busy 2021. We were lucky to have the same wonderful cohort this year in ESC 6, and welcomed one new student to our classroom, Brock. We are excited to continue our learning with Miss Gage and Mrs Harcourt, and welcomed Miss Trahorsch and Mrs Mahalingam too! We are looking forward to the exciting things planned for the year, and have enjoyed our classes so far, especially our option classes which include music, art, D&T, DigiTech, dance, home economics and PE. In class some of the things we have been learning about are natural and man-made materials, with a focus around plastic, in Bush Rangers, subtraction in maths, and materials in science. Have a look at the photos below to see what we’ve been up to so far this term.
Miss Gage.

Rohan: In year 8 I have enjoyed DigiTech because I played Minecraft Education with my friends. Other things I liked this year was Brock trying to scare me. The other thing was doing Sport. I like catching balls in Sport. I also liked Art because we got to make a fish. I also like the new EA’s Mrs Mahalingham and Miss Trahorsch. I liked doing a puzzle with Star and Izzie. I also liked meeting the new year 7 kids called Katherleen, Aisha and Liam.
Brock: In year 8 I have liked Reading DI and getting jelly beans as a reward. Sport is fun. We have been playing cricket. We have been learning how to bowl and catch the ball. I like my new school and my new teacher Miss Gage. I have some new friends called Ari, Archer, Izzie and Goldie.
Izzie: In year 8 I have enjoyed going to cooking class. I made a curry toasty and a Hawaiian toasty. My favourite is the curry toasty because it was tasty. In Art I am making a fish out of paper. I liked making it because it is so much fun. My fish is pink and purple. I have a new friend named Brock. I liked doing the Australian puzzle with Star. Star is my best friend. I’m happy because Miss Gage is my teacher again, she is beautiful.
Star: In year 8 I have liked Music because we do Boogie Land. I like Dance and doing the puzzle with Izzie. I like doing Art because we made fish and coloured them in. At recess I like playing with Izzie, Brock and Goldie because we play tag on the grass. I like reading The Very Sleepy Bear because it is funny.

Ari: In year 8 I liked DigiTech, Cooking and Music. I liked DigiTech because we get to play Minecraft Education. Mr Angus is the DigiTech teacher. He taught us how to do a PowerPoint on the computer. In Music, Mrs Damos taught us different types of ceremonies. In Cooking we made toasties. This year we have Mrs Khosla for Protective Behaviours. I enjoy Cooking the most.
Goldie: In year 8 I have liked Art, Sport and Dancing. In Art I drew a fish and coloured and cut out the shape. Then we stuffed the fish with strips of paper. Miss Heard teaches us cricket for Sport. I have a new friend called Brock and I really like him because I play with him at recess. Dancing is fun because I really like it. Art is my favourite.

We had an unexpected start to term 1 in ESC 8 but all the students have transitioned beautifully into high school. I am so proud of the progress that the students have made in the past few weeks.

We started off the term doing activities to get to know our students. We have been learning how to write personal recounts, about the environment and practising our number skills. I am looking forward to a fun year! Well done to the students in ESC 8!
Mrs Varghese
ESC 9 EMMA RATTO & JENELLE HEARD
Wow, term 1 has got off to a busy start in ESC 9. We welcomed Miss Heard and Miss Mitchell into our classroom, and of course spent week 1 wearing our masks! We have been learning how to create exciting recounts based on true events, using place value to partition numbers and using respectful language to communicate our likes and dislikes. This week, we also begin our CBL outings. I am so proud of how each student has transitioned into Year 8 and the kindness and respect they have shown towards others. You are awesome ESC 9!
Miss Ratto
What a beautiful start we have had in ESC 9! I am lucky enough to teach students on a Monday and Tuesday this year. We have been learning about lots of different things, including telling the time, types of environments, healthy/unhealthy food and mindfulness in peaceful kids. We have also started a step challenge, where students wear a “stepper watch” each day and have a daily step goal, which is recorded on our “step challenge map.” It’s fantastic to see students challenging themselves and incorporating more steps and movement into their school day. A big thank you to Miss Mitchell for creating our beautiful map which is on display in our classroom.
Well done to all students for settling in so nicely and working hard during class! I am looking forward to an enjoyable and successful year.
Miss Heard

It has been such a jam-packed and full five weeks of the term so far! We have a very creative, collaborative and happy-go-lucky group of year 7’s. From their brief transitioning last year to the big high schoolers this year, they have shown their resilience, perseverance and strength in all areas of learning.
At their very first assembly, the students had the opportunity to showcase their likes and dislikes to their new peers and they were excited to be on the big screen! In home economics, the students are expanding their cooking repertoire, in art, the students have been creating 3D creatures and in music with Mrs Damos, we have been doing singing and dancing to explore rhythm.

Check out some thoughts from the ESC 10 crew about life at Leeming:
Maggie: ‘I love to hang out with Aisha at recess and lunch’.
Jack: ’I really love art, science and music. It’s the best!’
Erika: ‘I like listening to music and dancing in Mrs Damos’ class’.
Tedial: ‘I like hanging out with my friends at recess and lunch’.
Christian: ‘I’m looking forward to doing wood work with Mr Z’.
Mikaela: ‘I like talking to my friends in the classroom’
Brianna: ‘I love being at Leeming! Art is one of my favourite classes’.
Oliver: ‘I like that I get to use my iPad in class! I’m looking forward to going on CBL soon’.
Xavier: ‘I like having PC Windows 10 and using my iPad to help me draw pictures’.

It’s been an exciting but steady beginning to the year 7 and we are looking forward to seeing what else we can learn before the term finishes! Check back in with us in week 10 to see what ESC 10 has been up to!
Mrs Knox, Mrs Brayne, Mrs T-J and Miss Russell
ESC 11 has had a very smooth transition into 2021. We have already seen the uniqueness of each individual student and we are extremely happy with the humour and manners your children have displayed. It was a pleasure to sit with their parents throughout the IEP process.

The class has already started up their business enterprise, selling muffins to the staff and will donate the profits from term 1 to ANZAC Cottage, when we visit there in March.

ESC 11 along with Mrs Smithson will be making ANZAC tea light holders and selling them for $5.00 each, again the profits will be donated to ANZAC Cottage as part of our schools ANZAC initiative.
Mrs Angelique Dinning

What a great start to the year!
It has been fantastic to meet our year 9 class who have transitioned from year 8 to year 9 smoothly, starting the year full of enthusiasm and positive attitudes. They are a caring and kind group of students who look after each other which is lovely to see.
The students have been engaged with Bush Rangers and teaching me a thing or two about their Drills, Code of Conduct and looking after our environment which we will be developing further in the coming weeks.
We have learnt some new maths and literacy games to help us learn while having fun and have engaged in some interesting activities about ‘Glittery Germs’, summer hygiene, swimming at the beach and using lots of describing words in our writing.
Thank you to the wonderful Ms Michelle Smith & Ms Maddison Sutherland for their fabulous assistance and together we look forward to the rest of 2021!
Ms Scarle
Yet another unprecedented start to the new school year! Nevertheless, the students have settled in beautifully into the new routine expectations. I am so amazed and impressed with how well students adapted to the changing situation and impact on workplace learning and class timetable. ESC 13 has an amazing team with Mrs Hales, Mrs Cox, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Smithson. We are also impressed with the high standard of positive team work and independence displayed by the students.
Congratulations to Aiden for securing employment with Ability Centre and Thomas and Corey for securing a work trial with Activ. Exciting times for students as they work towards charting their post school transitions.
The highlight of this term has certainly been the school ball. They enjoyed the delectable meal and danced the night away. It was certainly a night they will always remember! Here are some of their highlights:
Elle: On Friday night l went to the school ball. I got to go with my friends in a limo. l liked that part. When l got there l walked down the red carpet with everyone. For dinner l got pasta and tacos. We had a chocolate fountain and cake for dessert.
Lauren: On Friday night I went to the school ball of 2021. I went in a limo with all my friends I was dancing on the dance floor with Luka, Ellie, Kane, Liam, Corey, and Tania and so many more. For dinner I ate pasta and a chicken and salad wrap. It was delicious. I had such an amazing night with everyone. I will remember it forever.
Liam: I wore a suit to the ball. The food was delicious and dancing was most fun. I like the limo ride because it was like Trans Perth station.
Corey: The school ball was fun. I felt like a superstar and it was wonderful. I wore a thick gold chain and an earing. I also enjoyed dancing.
Luka: I like dancing with my friends and enjoyed going to the different food stations. I like the atmosphere a lot and sitting in a limousine and on a fancy table with my friends and seeing my teachers.
Kane: I liked taking photos with my aunt in my James Bond suit. I enjoyed the roast turkey, pasta and taco. I loved dancing to the music with my friends.
Tania: I loved going in the limo and dancing with my friends. I look pretty in my purple dress.
Ms Parwani, Mrs Cox, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Smithson and Mrs Hales
Even with a different start to the year than expected, ESC14 students settled into their new classroom quickly. They began sharing their holiday adventures and getting to know who had similar interests to theirs during morning meetings. By identifying what zone they felt, their peers would know if they were feeling happy and ready to learn, or needing a body break to regain focus prior to starting each lesson.
Students are excitedly planning their business enterprises and have decided to make bath salts, dog biscuits and slime to sell to their customers. With the profits made, half of the money raised will go to a charity of their choice, while the other half will go towards a leisure activity later on in the year.
A highlight of the first term for many students was the Year 12 Ball, held at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. Everyone looked stunning in their formal wear and enjoyed a variety of food stations and delicious desserts. Most of the night was spent on the dancefloor, with the worm dance move and Blinding Lights routine being highpoints of the evening. Congratulations to Max and Ellie who were crowned Belle and Beau of the Ball!

I am looking forward to an action-packed rest of the term, and we are very lucky to have a great support team including, Mrs Shivers, Ms Grida, Mrs Subramaniam and Mrs Blaxall this year.
Miss Megrail
In ESC 17 we have had a crazy but fantastic start to the year. I must commend all students on transitioning from year 8 to Year 9 seamlessly and coming to school with the right attitude each day.
We have been working very hard so far this term to make up for the lost week at the start of the year. It is crazy to think how quick the time has flown by. The students in ESC 17 are a very tight group of boys and it is good to see them socialising both in class and at break times. Although only early in the year, we have begun many different activities such as art portraits, Bush Rangers seed planting, and during sport lessons, the boys travel to the beach each week for swimming lessons, which they love.
I would like to thank my wonderful team in ESC 17, Janet Bruns, Kym Buchanan and Anne Lersdejsakul, who have been a great assistance to the students and myself. I look forward to what’s to come in 2021.
Mr Drennan
PHYS ED JENELLE HEARD & JENNA ALLOMES
What a crazy, hot start to the year! We have been straight into it with multiple sports starting including cricket, swimming, dance and fitness circuits. In preparation for our Cricket Carnival in week 7 we have been focusing on skill sessions including throwing, catching, batting and fielding. We look forward to keeping you updated in the next newsletter to how the carnival went.
Swimming at Port Coogee Marina has begun and it has been a nice relief to get in the cool water. Our focus is on beach and water education as we have a fantastic safe location to practise these skills. Many of the students enjoy the experience of being at a beach without the big waves and the smell of chlorine. As well as beach safety, a priority is to teach life skills including being organised, what to bring on an outing and how to change themselves privately in a public setting.
While we have had some hot days the students have participated well throughout all the sports and it’s nice to see their smiling faces again this year. It’s really important that all students are bringing their sports uniform, a hat and a drink bottle on sport days. This helps us educate them about being sun smart and the expectations at school. Senior students should be bringing a change of clothes (school uniform) and roll on deodorant.

Congratulations to Josh Evans who received our Employee of the Month award at our recent assembly. Josh has worked extremely well with minimal support at the commencement of workplace learning this year at GSE. Josh has remembered his established routine from last year and is hard working and eager to please. Well done Josh and keep up the great efforts! Josh commences his customised employment program with GSE from Friday 19th March. A great outcome, congratulations Josh.
Ben Armstrong is to be congratulated on his employment at Alinea two days per week. He has settled into the new working role quickly and has grasped the new tasks as he sorts items from cages in the warehouse. A great achievement in his graduating year!
The senior school were privileged to have presenter Scott Johnson CEO of AYLA inc. share his inspiring business ventures. He shared his journey from leaving school to his empowering charity work and various projects. All students enjoyed and engaged in a future goal setting brainstorm. Scott was very impressed with the student’s ideas and involvement. A positive experience for everyone.
SPECIALIST TEACHER DEEPIKA KHOSLA
This year I have been assigned a specialist role, where I have the privilege to teach the Middle School and some year 10 students Zones of Regulation and the SoSAFE Program as part of Protective Behaviours. The students have been learning to identify the different zones, identify their own emotions, state how they feel and what zone they are in. Currently we are looking at the different strategies and tools that will help them self-regulate to help them to get back to the Green Zone (happy, calm, ready to focus).

I also run the Home Economics Program for the year 7 students and option classes for years 8 and 9. The students have been busy trying new flavours and are enjoying participating.

The year 7,8,9 and 10 students also participate in craft lessons with me as one of their option class. We have made ‘The Chinese Paper Drum', 'Work Placemats' and a dreamcatcher so far.

It’s been a privilege to work with so many staff and students across the school, especially the year 7 students who have settled in beautifully into the high school routine.
Our Recess and Lunch program “Leeming Link” has had a great start this term.
The students have participated and enjoyed many activities already, e.g. Jelly Bean Getting to Know You Game, Rock Art, Pancake Day and Cup Weaving.
It’s been great seeing our new Year 7 students get involved.
We have many more exciting activities planned for the remainder of Term 1. Have a look at what’s coming up on our Leeming Link Timetable.
Kind regards,
Mrs Houden and Ms Vangi
