On Monday 9th November, our year 12 and 13 students had their final assembly for 2020 at the Leeming Recreation Centre. Many of these students began their journey together in 2015 when the year 8’s were joined by year 7 as the first cohort of year 7’s to start high school. This was a lovely final assembly to farewell many of the students who are transitioning from school to exciting pathways in employment, further study or alternative programs.
A very big thank you to Ms Stewart and her team who had the task of organising the event during COVID restrictions, you did an amazing job and started some wonderful new school traditions. The first being a gift to the school on behalf of the students, our very own unique school star! The Leeming Star is registered and can be tracked in real time on the following website, “star-register.org”, enter the reference number 161404981 and view our very own school star! This is a beautiful gift and a great way to always remember the students of 2020. The handing of the compass to the next year 12 students will now be a new tradition every year. The compass represents the spiritual direction and discovery of possibility, guiding and navigating our students to develop the confidence and skills to reach their full potential. Thank you to the year 12 and 13 students for the thoughtful gifts to the school. I would also like to thank the parents for their wonderful generosity of donated items for the raffles which provided fundraising to purchase these gifts. The rest of the money raised has gone towards reducing the cost of tickets for the graduation dinner and to provide soft drinks and decorations. I look forward to celebrating with our year 12 and 13 students and families at their final dinner in the coming weeks. Please note that the final day of school for year 13 is Thursday 19th November and for year 12, Thursday 26th November.

The Disco on Friday 6th December was a lot of fun and I would like to thank the Disco committee, Ms Hamel, Mrs Coles, and all the volunteers for a wonderful night. Also a special thank you to the very creative and talented Mrs Bruns, for all the amazing super hero decorations. The students had a great time and we all enjoyed the delicious sushi provided by one of our parents, thank you CK! It was also great to see DJ extraordinaire, Mr Muir who came to help out on the night.
Every two years all schools in Australia are required to survey the school community including parents, students and staff using the National School Opinion Survey. The survey is developed using mandated questions as well as questions developed by the School Board. The information and feedback will allow us to identify what is important to you as parents and carers in the education of your children at Leeming SHS ESC. Your feedback is very important to us and we would like to get as many of you as possible to complete the survey. Below is the link for the survey which should only take approximately 10 minutes of your time. If you have any problems accessing the survey, please contact the school. Your responses will be completely anonymous and you can access the survey at https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/Pn5bU6Vh

The School Board met for the scheduled meeting on 26th October and we ratified the School Development Days for 2021, Contribution and Charges for 2021 and some adjustments to the 2020 budget.
The Parent Facebook page was discussed along with the material from David Koutsoukis on promoting the 2021-2023 Business Plan to the school community.
The 3rd Annual Public Meeting was held in the Trade Training Centre and the number of parents attending was down on 2019 attendance. The annual public meeting is an important date on our school calendar so alternatives will be discussed by the Board on how we can make this event a success and increase attendance.
Thank you.

Leeming ESC School Board
This year our School Board will be farewelling Nicky Vodanovic. Nicky has been a long standing, valued member of the Leeming SHS ESC School Board. As a Board member she was very involved in the process of becoming an Independent Public School in 2017 and has been a wonderful parent representative, always giving excellent insight from a parent perspective. I wish Nicky, Mitch and her family all the very best in the future.
With Nicky Vodanovic leaving, the Board is seeking nominations for a parent representative to start in 2021. The role of the Board is to enable parents and members of the community to engage in activities that are in the best interest of students and enhance the education provided by the school. The Board meets twice a term on a Monday afternoon between 1:00pm – 3:00pm. If you are interested in joining our very collaborative and productive School Board please complete a Nomination Form attached and return it to leemingesc.wa.edu.au or hand into the office by Monday 4th December 2020. An election will be held if the number of nominations exceeds the 2 positions. If you require any further information about the process or role of a parent representative, please contact on 9237 6870.
On Thursday 29th October Leeming SHS ESC held our annual Pop Up Shops. The sunken garden came alive with a spectacular display of students showcasing their creative streak. Parents, carers, friends, students and staff from Leeming SHS, the Member for Jandakot Yaz Mubarakai, and over 150 students from local primary schools visited, ensuring that there was a carnival atmosphere and that our stalls had plenty of willing customers.

Enterprises on sale included rock art, calendars, slime, recycled bush knick-knacks, beaded jewellery, tea and Christmas decorations. Most stalls sold out of produce and some classes took orders so that no one missed out. Half of the money raised from each stall will go to a charity of the classes choice. The other half of the money raised will go back into the classroom. A huge thank you to our extended school community who attended and supported our day. This event enables so many learning opportunities for our students as they create and then interact with their peers and others to sell their products.
Thanks to Ezra for the artwork on our Pop Up shop poster.

Here we are half way through the fourth and final term of 2020! We have been very busy all term preparing ourselves for ASDAN moderation, finalising our preliminary unit work, preparing for the school pop up shops and going on school camp.
Our school camp to Quaranup was fantastic! We started our trip by stopping in Kojonup for lunch. We were able to stretch our legs and let out some energy. After this stop it was straight on to Quaranup where our camp site was located.
On Wednesday we took part in some campsite activities. Firstly, we did a bush walk to learn about the local flora and fauna. It was a long walk but we all managed to complete the full circuit, including travelling up a rocky hill. We then took part in a raft building activity. We split up in to two groups to see who could build the best raft using empty water containers, ropes and wood planks. Unfortunately, both rafts fell apart after a short time on the water but it was still a very enjoyable experience where we could work together as a team. Finally, we visited Kurrah Mia to view some indigenous arts and crafts. We saw locally made dot paintings and handmade digeridoos by local artists.
On Thursday we visited the Albany wind farm and searched for interesting facts about the facility. We learnt a lot about sustainable energy sources and how a majority of Albany’s power is generated by the wind farm. We then departed for The Valley of the Giants treetop walk outside of Walpole. Despite some anxiety, all of us were brave enough to complete the whole walk and we saw some magnificent giant trees.
Overall this was a fantastic experience for our class and we learnt a great deal. We have lots of fantastic memories from Quaranup and Albany.
And just like that …. It is halfway through the last term of the year!
2020 has been difficult in many ways, but we are thankful for the time with your children. You are wonderful parents and Leeming ESC is lucky to have such a fabulous community network.
ESC 4 has been working hard with the Pop up shop making teas. We sold many on the day and the boys worked hard making and packing french earl grey tea with lavender and rose petals, Melbourne breakfast tea, chai lattes, peppermint and chamomile teas. We sold butter cookies, and popcorn. The class has chosen to donate 50% of their profits to Beyond Blue.
The students have been preparing for a special handover ceremony to be welcomed by the current graduates into year 12 next year. This will happen at the assembly in Week 5 in Term 4.
We continue to enjoy a period of meditation for 15 minutes daily. We are seeing wonderful benefits with the class slowing down and taking time to relax. Dim lighting, quiet music and calming images makes a huge difference to the end of year high energy and visibly reduces tension and worry.
Workplace has been back in full swing this semester and the students continue to apply their learning and with luck and hard work, we hope that some will soon get part time jobs.
As we head into the silly season and wrap up the year I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the hard working staff who have supported your children to successfully complete Year 11. Mrs Johnson, Mrs Banks, Mrs Lester-Smith, Mrs Brayne, Mrs Blaxell and Mrs Morgan. Thank you for your support, your hard-work and your humour.
“WOW” what an amazing start the students have had this term. In the first week, Natasha and Vanessa from ‘SURCEL’ (The South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare) visited the class and delivered two incursions; ‘Noongar Bush Tucker’ and ‘Clean Drains-River Gains,’ to celebrate the completion of our HASS and Bush Ranger, Conservation Projects. Later, we were overwhelmed by an email Natasha sent to express how impressed she was with the students’ knowledge of Noongar names of plants, animals and their uses. She commented that the students level of understanding was better than any other group they had ever presented to. The students were outstanding and the staff felt extremely proud. Congratulations to everyone!

The ‘Pop Up Shop’ was a huge, huge, huge success and the ‘Noongar Six Seasons Calendars’ sold out with a number of additional orders taken. The money raised will go towards a variety of charities, including the ‘First Nations Bedtime Stories Challenge’, ‘The Wetlands Centre at Bibra Lake’ and the ‘Perth Zoo Conservation Projects’. Thank you to the parents and families for coming along on the day and supporting the student’s enterprise products.
The following day was spent at Woodmans Point. ESC 5, ESC 9 and families enjoyed fishing as part of the tremendous FishAbility program. The amazing mentors congratulated all students on their outstanding efforts and kindly presented students with a fishing book, cupcakes and Halloween treats. If we were not spoilt enough, three tremendousness prizes were also handed out, and Thomas was a winner of a fishing rod. Well done, Thomas! The students and families picnicked in the beautiful surroundings of John Graham Recreational Reserve, before cooling off with a swim in the shallow water. Thank you to the families for coming along and making the day so enjoyable. Phew! But wait there is more.

On Monday 2nd (Thomas’s Birthday) Constable Care visited and we all thoroughly enjoyed two puppet shows with a Health and Protective Behaviours focus on ‘First Aid Hero’s’ and ‘Fun Scary’. All the students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the shows.

The last congratulations go to Isaac, Phillip and Evan for attending the five day ‘Bush Ranger Leadership Camp’ to Geraldton. The afterschool program acknowledges your USTAR qualities, your independence, and leadership. Outstanding!
We would like to congratulate the boys on their achievements and thank their parents for all your help and support. Your support is very much appreciated!
I would like to finish by acknowledging our amazing team, Michelle Smith, Katy Blacklock and Anne Lersdejsakul, for their hard work, dedication, kindness, and commitment to supporting the students, their families and me.
Thank you! Mrs Vann, Ms Smith, Mrs Blacklock and Ms Lersdejsakul.
What an amazing start to our last term of Year 7! I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone, and how much we’ve achieved together. Term 4 has already kept us extremely busy with many fun events and excursions. In week 1 we celebrated Autism Awareness Day by wearing blue and painting the side of one of the ESC demountables blue, and covering it with our blue handprints! The wall looked awesome, and it was so great to see many of our students ‘go blue’ for the day.

In week 2, ESC 6 began preparation for the annual Pop-Up Shops. We worked extremely hard and started the production process of our product which was Silly Putty! We demonstrated fantastic teamwork and work skills by following a recipe to make the putty, kept track of our product using an inventory and packaged the products appropriately and attached the labels. We marketed and advertised our product, leading up to the event, by making and displaying our own posters around the centre.
In week 3 the Pop-Up Shops arrived, and we all looked so professional in our Silly Putty t-shirts. Our stall looked awesome, and everyone did a fantastic job at following a work schedule to know when we were on stall duty and when we had shopping time at the other awesome stalls! We kept track of our selling product using an inventory, handled money and gave our customers their change when necessary.
It was a HUGE success and our stall was very popular, especially with the Primary School students who visited. We ended up selling ALL of our Silly Putty which was $330! We will be using half of the profit made to donate to a charity, and will use the other half towards an end of year excursion to celebrate all of our achievements. Well done ESC 6!

This term we have continued our CBL program to Southlands Boulevard. We have been learning how to read a bus timetable, hail the correct bus, tag on and off using our Smartriders and sit on the bus appropriately. We have continued our learning of the Road Crossing Script when crossing the roads and through the carpark, and learning to spot the emergency exit signs and our class ‘safe spot’ in the centre. This term we have also had the opportunity to practise our money and shopping skills, by ordering our lunch and using money to pay for our meal. We are remembering to order our food using a clear voice, and to wait for our change.
The rest of the term will be exciting and we are looking forward to the ESC Disco and our Year 7 Camp to Point Peron in week 9.
We have started the term with many fun and interactive activities, at our recess and lunch program Leeming Link.
Here are a couple of snaps so far of our Food Faces and our Soapy Slime. Students made the slime from scratch, even grating the cakes of soap to make the soap flakes!

Term 4, for ESC 7, this year has been full of exciting event's as we prepare to transition into Year 9!
''Constable Care'' has come to the school and performed a puppet show on ''Emergency and First Aid Procedures'', it was super funny and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
Real Policemen have also come to our school to share with us what they do, talk about their equipment and what it is like to be a ''TOP COP''.
Mrs Chloe Radonich and Mrs Lisa Palma, were instrumental is organising our ''Pop Up Shop for Market Day''. We sold succulent plants, slime and a delicious Wheet Bix slice''. Our shop was a hit, we sold all our products in a couple of hours and raised money to give to a special charity.
Mrs Dawn Sutherland, is about to have her first baby any minute and we are so excited for her, she will make a wonderful Mum. Mrs Sutherland is a super special teacher who has done an amazing job this year!
The student's in ESC 7 - Year 8.1 have come so far since the beginning of high-school. They are so much taller, more mature and have developed awesome independent skills. We use all these skills when going on Community Based Learning to Cockburn Gateways Shopping Centre.
Mrs Chloe Radonich, Mrs Lisa Palma and Ms Tori Hamel have been massive contributors and provided undeniable support and care to these students thought 2020. They are so important to these super special students and make such a difference to their lives.
There is lot's planned for the rest of the term, including camp which we are so excited about.
ESC 7 - Year 8.1, you are all super stars, always shine as bright as you can and never give up because you can achieve anything you put your mind to!
Term 4 has swung by so quickly. The term started with Autism Awareness, Go Blue Day in Week 1. Students participated in different activities at lunch time, ordered a sausage sizzle and also did a gold coin donation by wearing something blue.
The students started their first CBL to Cockburn Gateways. They practiced traveling on the bus and train from school to Cockburn Gateways. Students had the opportunity to load their SmartRider at a kiosk at Murdoch Station, and meet the Transperth officers wearing vests and also had the opportunity to get their Smartriders verified by officers on board the train.
ESC 8 students named their stall ‘The Bush Knick Knacks’ as most of the items created were from the bushes and school garden. The students collected wood, honkey nuts and bits and pieces they found to create their masterpieces. They made bird hangers, wind chimes, jingle sticks, succulents in recycled bottles and jars and candle holders. The most popular ones with the kids were the ‘tin can games’ and bird hangers. The students worked very hard creating them and displaying them as well. It was great team effort and a wonderful demonstration or work skills and enterprise. We made $230 with half the amount going to RSPCA and half being spent on the students.
The students also had the opportunity to meet with Police officers Kurt and Scott from Constable Care and learn all the equipment they use to keep them and the community safe.
The students moved classrooms in weeks 4 and 5 as the Year 7 transition took place in ESC 8 classroom. The students demonstrated great maturity and resilience during this time.
The Student Council Elections took place on the 3rd of November. Some students nominated themselves to be part of the campaign and prepared speeches which they delivered in front of their peers. Kenneth, Ryley, Luke and Nicholas stood for the election and the whole class took part in casting their vote in the ballot box. A fantastic opportunity to learn about Civics and Citizenship.
The students participated in a Footy Clinic and enhanced their footy skills. ESC 8 students are looking forward to a few exciting events in the forthcoming weeks, The Year 8 Camp, Excursion to Chins Noodle House, Christmas Activities and Family Fun Day!
I can only say it’s been a pleasure working with my staff, students and parents this year with all the chaos and uncertainty with COVID 19, we have all worked together and sailed through beautifully. Thank you for great collaborative effort in giving all students the best learning opportunities this year.
How amazing is it that we’re already in Week 5 of Term 4! It’s difficult to believe there is just 5 weeks left of 2020.This term has been extremely busy and it’s only going to pick up speed. We have been very lucky to have Raggy and Miss Hamel join our class this Term and we wish them a very warm welcome!

We had a very successful Pop-Up Shop event last week and managed to raise over $150 for charity. All items sold were prepared and made by the students and I must commend them on the amazing products they produced. I’m extremely proud! A very big thank you to the parents and family members who were able to attend on the day.

In Phys Ed the students have been learning how to play Tee-ball and the Murdoch Police came to visit and talked to us about community safety. The whole school celebrated ‘Go Blue for Autism’ day and we showed our support by all dressing in blue! Check out our class photo below.

On CBL, the ESC 10 students have become quite independent, tagging on and off when using the bus to Southlands and very soon, Cockburn Gateways (watch this space). They love to order their own lunches and McDonald’s is definitely a favourite.

Check back in with us in Week 10 to hear all about the Year 8 Camp to Point Peron, we’re so excited to go!
The ESC 10 Team!
Ms Knox, Mrs Buchanan, Ms Mahalingham and Miss Hamel
Once again ESC 11 has had a very productive start to the term. The class business enterprise, ‘Marvellous Muffins’ has continued to bake on average, 40 muffins every week and they also proved to be a best seller at our Pop up Shop. The profits raised from the sale of muffins during semester 1 will be donated to ‘Soldiers On’ and from semester two ‘The Charlie Foundation’.
The year 9 classes had an adventure in week 3, with an overnight sleep over at AQWA. The students enjoyed sleeping in the aquarium tunnel surrounded by a vast variety of marine life including sharks, stingrays, turtles and huge fish.
They were also lucky enough to engage with some marine life in the touch pool, such as shovel nose sharks and star fish.
Well what a busy start to the term we have had in ESC 12. Just when we thought we might have been ready to wind down towards the end of the year it has became busier.
In week three we had the annual pop up shop day. It was a great success. The boys and staff in ESC 12 worked extremely hard to create numerous items to sell. We worked to make Christmas ornaments, fresh car-scent hangers, key rings of all different kinds, and numerous posters to display around the school. It was a huge effort with each person contributing to make it the best stall possible.
In week 3 the year 9 group also went for an overnight stay at AQWA. It was a great experience for all students, as we slept under the aquarium filled with sharks, stingrays, fish, turtles and many more different sea creatures. Other highlights were when students were given the opportunity to feed the fish, and touch different sea creatures in the touch pools as well as a tour of the facilities. All students who attended had a great time and displayed the behaviours and characteristics that we strive for at Leeming ESC.
With only five weeks to go we are enjoying the time we have together. As always I would like to thank my staff and parents in ESC 12 for always being so supportive. I look forward to the exciting activities we have planned for the final few weeks of school, before a well-earned break.
ESC 13 POONAM PARWANI & ESC 14 TAMMY MEGRAIL
What an amazing experience ESC 13 & ESC 14 shared together at Camp Leschenaultia. Students visited the York Museum and participated in hands-on games and activities transporting them back to the early 1900’s. This was followed by a journey into the lives of the criminals that were sentenced in the Local Courthouse. The following day began with a stroll around Lake Leschenaultia, and some free time to enjoy the Mundaring Sculpture Park. Next, students completing a fascinating Bush Survival Program with Vanessa from Bush Wisdom. The night ended with a quiz about the day’s activities and a quiet evening watching a movie. On our last morning, we farewelled our bush home and set off to The Perth Hills Discovery Centre. Mr C from the Nearer to Nature Program took us on a bush tucker walk, and all enjoyed eating tasty damper and juicy kangaroo sausages. Students got to grind Buckwheat, make string from reeds, and try and start a fire using charcoal and firesticks. It was great to see students try new things and work together to make It a memorable time for us all.

I loved the kangaroo sausages – Taj
I enjoyed the dinners Paul made – Amasha
I liked going down the big slide – Kasper
I enjoyed free time dancing and singing with my friends – Josh
I loved the yummy food and meals we had for dinner – Azaria
I enjoyed ringing the loud school bell – Ben
I enjoyed the flying fox – Tom
My favourite part of camp was hanging out with my friends – Wil
Term 4 has been very busy. The term started with Autism Awareness, Go Blue Day in Week 1. Students participated in different activities at lunch time, ordered a sausage sizzle and also did a gold coin donation by wearing something blue.
The students started CBL this term with two trips to Southlands Boulevard. They practised catching the bus and purchasing their own lunches. Students had the opportunity to load their SmartRider with $5 or $10 as they get on the bus. The students all enjoyed the return to CBL and demonstrated appropriate behaviour in the community.
We had a wonderful Pop Up Shop day in week 3. It was a warm sunny day so we sold a lot of lemonade, sold out of Anzac cookies and nearly all the pickled cucumber. We have had rave reviews of our pickles with people coming back to purchase our unsold jars. The students worked as a team producing, wrapping and presenting our items. They also worked on the stall selling the items to the public. It was great group effort and a wonderful demonstration of work skills and enterprise. We made $225. The students wanted to help homeless people so half the amount will go to The Samaritans and the other half will be spent on the students.
The Year 9 camp to AQWA also happened in week 3. It was a great opportunity for the students to spend time with all their year 9 friends. We started the camp with activities and afternoon tea at school before travelling by bus to Hillarys. On arrival we had a delicious dinner followed by setting up our beds down in the shark tunnel. We put our beds in a long line on the side of the tunnel. Next we had a tour of the indoor exhibits and made some “scratch” art. Finally, we all watched a movie before moving down into our watery sleeping spot. The students slept through the night or at least stayed in their beds watching the passing show. In the morning we had to wake up early. We packed our things and had breakfast before feeding fish in the outside tanks and visiting the outside exhibits. We then got on the bus and drove to Bibra Lake for Bush Ranger activities and a bit of time in the playground. It was a very hot day so we were happy to return to school for a pizza lunch with all our fellow campers. The camp was a good opportunity to have some fun and to demonstrate our independent living skills.
In week 4 we had an incursion during Bush Rangers with Constable Care. We learnt what to do in an emergency and the number to call, 000. There was lots of laughter as well as learning a safety message. We also started to make clay coil pots in art which we are going to plant the succulents we have been growing at the beginning of term 3.
It has been a pleasure working with students, staff and parents of ESC16 so far this year. It has been an unprecedented year in which we all had to learn how to live differently. I am looking forward to spending the rest of the year with this lovely group of students.
PHYS ED JENELLE HEARD & JENNA ALLOMES
During term 3, Leeming Senior High School Education Support Centre have taken part in a 10-week program linked with the University of Notre Dame (UNDA), that incorporates “one on one” and small group Physical Education sessions delivered to our students. Every Friday, we travel from Leeming to Fremantle, where the sessions take place. Students from UNDA are in their third year of studying a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education and a Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation. The program provides a great opportunity for our Leeming students to develop their fundamental movement skills, gross motor skills, cooperation skills and sportsmanship, as well as building networks and relationships with new people in the community. Our students absolutely love the program and thoroughly enjoy being coached and taught by the enthusiastic Notre Dame students. Leeming students often talk about the program to staff and peers around the school, expressing much excitement for their weekly trips to Fremantle.

A typical session consists of the Notre Dame students having turns each week in taking a whole group game/ warm up, that everyone is involved in. Students will then break off into their pairs for 30 minutes and participate in one on one personalised activities that the Notre Dame student has created for their buddy, building on different skills and goals each week. For the last 15 minutes, everyone re-joins for an end of lesson game and stretching as a whole group.
The program has provided many learning opportunities for our students and staff at Leeming Senior High School ESC and it is evident that improvement in skills, coordination and sportsmanship has resulted from the personalised sessions. It has also offered various opportunities involving Notre Dame students taking on carer roles outside of school with their buddies and taking on relief EA work while finishing their studies.
It has been fabulous having the year 10 students join the workplace learning program this term. They are all doing an amazing job in their chosen industry placements.

Our recipient of the Employee of the Month at the senior school assembly was Joe Gibson. He was acknowledged for his offer of employment with Alinea. Throughout this year he has increased his independence at work and travelling on public transport. Joe has also engaged in additional days of administration and retail industries through his Activ Internship placements. At each placement Joe attends, his working team enjoy his bubbly personality. Congratulations to Joe.

Aiden Hughes and Lauren Robinson are progressing with their employment offer through the Ability Centre, Bibra Lake with the launch of the new Collection Deposit Scheme. Good luck and best wishes to these students.
Congratulations to Nelly Evenis for securing a work trial with The Bike Dr in Subiaco for the remainder of the school year. His supervisor already reports that he is engaged in the work, with the team and is right on track. Way to go Nelly.
