I am very excited to let our school community know, the Leeming SHS ESC 2020 – 2022 School Business Plan has been published and is now available on our school website. A copy will be posted home to families within the next few weeks. I would like to thank the school Board and school community for helping to shape our 2020-2022 Business Plan. We are looking forward to promoting our Business Plan and engaging the school community to achieve our planned targets.
2020 – 2022 School Priority Areas:
Quality Teaching
Purposeful Curriculum
Effective Leadership
Positive Culture
Community Connections
Congratulations to Mrs Vann who was successful in gaining two PALS grants this year. The grant money will go towards completing the Aboriginal six seasons garden with student artwork. This area of the garden is a great addition to our school environment, promoting awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture and language.
The after-school athletics and Bush Ranger programs have been very popular this term, with over 50 students attending the athletics program each week. Thank you to Miss Heard and Miss Allomes and all the staff who have supported these after school programs which take a lot of time to organise and coordinate. A big thank you also to the Bush Ranger committee who organise an engaging after school program each term with lots of exciting activities that support developing student understanding and awareness of our local environment.
Thank you to Mrs Houden and our school chaplain Vangi, who worked collaboratively with Leeming SHS to coordinate Multicultural Day. This event gets bigger and better each year and students thoroughly enjoyed all the engaging activities on the day. This is a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity within our school community.
The introduction of Phase 5 easing of COVID restrictions has been delayed until the end of October due to the situation in Victoria. We will continue to keep you up to date with developments and the impact on school activities. Mrs Stewart is organising the graduation dinner for year 12 and 13 students this year. A parent meeting will be held later this term to finalise plans as we find out more information on the impact of restrictions. This year will be the largest group of students and families attending the dinner. Thank you, Mrs Stewart, for all your efforts coordinating this event in such uncertain times.
Our senior students have been working through their My Plans this term and it has been exciting to hear about all the great achievements and plans for future pathways. Thank you to all the parents and carers who have been working collaboratively with staff and navigating the NDIS system to identify the best supports and pathways, I appreciate the effort and thought you have put into planning for the future and I look forward to seeing the positive outcomes as a result. Thank you also to Ms FP who supported many families through this process with her excellent knowledge and guidance.
The School Board met on Monday 3rd August. We had a report from our School Chaplain Vangi on the School Community Project. There has been tremendous support shown by the school community and at the present time there is no requirement for any donations of goods. A huge thank you to everyone for your generosity. So many in the school will benefit.
The Board also discussed the Parent Network Meetings, had an update on the COVID 19 impact to the school, the Business Plan for 2020 - 2022, Capital Works projects around the school campus and a planned upgrade to the school website.
The date of the Annual Open Meeting of the board will be held on Monday 26th October. I encourage you to attend. More information will follow.
Thank you everyone.
On behalf of the School Board

Planning for the Multicultural and Arts Festival started at the end of 2019. A dedicated committee of staff from Leeming ESC and Leeming SHS worked hard (with a COVID challenge thrown in) to bring together a wonderful display of activities and colour, demonstrating our core values of culture, respect, harmony, unity, inclusion and celebration. Over 2 days, on the 27th and 28th July, students had the opportunity to participate in the fun of flamenco dancing, taste cuisine from around the world, try their hand at calligraphy and origami and work on collages. Leeming ESC students also contributed to an incredible, whole school multicultural display in the library. Students donated a gold coin to participate in activities and, in an incredible effort, just over $1000 was raised. This money will go towards St Patricks Community Support Centre in Fremantle. Thanks to all Leeming SHS and ESC staff who made this event possible.

It is hard to believe we are already at the half way point for term 3!
This term we have started a work readiness program with Ms FP. The students are learning all about skills that are important for the workplace and how to problem solve any issues that can present. We are learning all about routines and checking our work roster to see our designated jobs. These have been helpful in our work place program at Striker Leisure centre. We are also taking part in a paper shredding program and Dismantle Bike Rescue program to develop our work readiness skills.
On Friday our class go to Notre Dame to take part in a sports program. Students are buddied up with a mentor through the program and are taking part in different sporting activities. We are all really enjoying the program and it is a great way to start our Fridays!
Once again, thank you to all our fantastic parents for their support and a huge thank you to all the staff involved in ESC1 helping us access these amazing programs.
It has been great to start our ASDAN Out In The Community program again. Although we had to social distance at the food court, we had a great time last Thursday. We caught the bus together and headed to the train and every student had their Smart Riders topped up and all enjoyed hailing down the bus.
We arrived at Rockingham Station after a slightly bumpy train ride and then all walked in a mature fashion to our designated ‘safe place’ which was Boost Juice. After a walk around to locate toilets, we became very hungry and enjoyed ordering and eating snacks that we brought from home. It was great to see everyone sitting in their preferred social groups and practicing their appropriate manners and social interaction skills- in line with our ASDAN modules.

After wandering around and locating the food and drink places we selected in our previous classes, we were ready for a yummy lunch. Red Rooster, the popular choice!

When we arrived back at school we were exhausted, but all very happy that we had such a wonderful day and beautiful weather. We hope our next adventure will go as smoothly as this one.
Scott Brechany and the ESC3 crew
Well here we are in August, over halfway through the year! 2020 has been jam packed with change globally and right down to our classroom level. The boys in year 11 have adapted and shown strong resilience as they have grown.
We have a new timetable and the class has worked hard. This semester we are finally able to get out on public transport for Community Based Learning in weeks 4, 6, 8 and 10 with our first trip to the Rockingham Shopping Centre. The photos show the student’s enjoyment, and they were so well behaved and remembered all their travel training rules and appropriate community behaviours.

Many ESC 4 students are attending a special weekly PE block at Notre Dame University and have been matched up with a university student ‘buddy’ who is working on specific skills with them. With the Athletics Carnival approaching we have established an after school athletics program for 4 weeks and several ESC4 students are enjoying this opportunity.
We have just planted our own cress seeds and nurture them daily by ensuring we meet their needs such as water and sunlight as a reminder to care for ourselves and our needs in the same way.
This is part of our meditation time immediately after recess each day and the students have loved it. Dim lighting, quiet music and calming images makes a huge difference to all the energy and we recommend you trial this at home if possible. These meditative skills can help ease stress and reduce anxiety.
We are also back to the workplace for work experience this semester and the students are loving it. We have had wonderful feedback about their behaviour and achievements.

We have successfully completed many of the final reviews of My Plans and I would like to thank all the families for a smooth process.
It has been a fast paced term and the weeks are flying past so quickly.
This term the students have started Community Based Learning, and they are all to be congratulated on their impressive performance walking on the left side of the path using their best listening skills and following the road crossing script to cross a variety of road crossings. On our walk, we looked for landmarks, trees and birds. At the park the students worked in pairs to complete a survey to identify different bird species. The students took photos of flora and fauna and sat quietly, learning to stop, listen and observe nature. Learning to observe, appreciate and connect to nature is proven to be good for health and wellbeing.
We are learning about the Noongar Six Seasons and how nature supplies food, medicine and natural materials that can be used to make tools, houses and items for everyday living. Learning to use natural materials sustainably and care for the environment.
In Bush Rangers, our focus is on endangered animals and the students have researched the Echidna, Carnaby Cockatoo and the Numbat so far. In the coming weeks we will investigate the Chuditch, Koala, their predators and acknowledge Threatened Species Day on September 7th.
In class, we are upskilling on technology, learning about coding, robotics and the many different roles robots will play, in the 21st century. The students are continuing to log on and access work on Connect by using many different software programs like, Word and PowerPoint.
Later in the term, our very creative and talented students will design, measure and build their own model bird houses and robots. If you have any recyclable boxes, cardboard tubes, containers or items suitable for these projects, please send them in to our class.
We really want to acknowledge the boys and thank their parents for raising such wonderful young men. It has been very rewarding to work with eight incredible boys who show such kindness and good manners and who take such pride in their work. Ms L, Ms Smith, Mrs Blacklock, and I are so impressed and proud of them. Thank you!

Lastly, in the afterschool Bush Rangers program, Evan, Phillip and Isaac have enjoyed learning how to use natural resources to layer a fire, light it safely and make damper. The cadets are also visiting Bibra Lake, learning about the (near threatened) Long Snake Necked (oblong) turtle. Fantastic!

Best wishes,
Mrs Vann, Ms L, Ms Smith and Mrs Blacklock.
It is hard to believe we are half way through term 3 already, and the hard work continues here in ESC 6. In week 2, we celebrated Multicultural Week. We learned about the different cultures and family history within our own classroom, which included Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Croatia and Palestine! We researched the different cultures in ESC 6 and made a display of the world map to show where our families are originally from. We also learned traditional Spanish Flamenco dancing and received Henna tattoos as part of our celebrations.

Semester 2 brings us some new experiences and opportunities to learn and practice our independence during our upcoming Community Based Lifeskills (CBL) program. In weeks 5, 7 and 9 the year 7.2 students will be heading out into the community for the first time to consolidate our road crossing skills, shopping skills and community behaviours. CBL is always a crowd favourite, and we are all so excited to learn and further develop our transport skills by using public transport next term.
This term we have also started our Peaceful Kids program. Peaceful Kids focuses on mindfulness through meditation practices to lessen anxiety and stress, and increase resilience in children. We are loving the meditation sessions so far, and have noticed a massive difference in our moods after each meditation. In week 3 we planted our very own plants using egg cartons, cotton wool and Crest seeds. Each morning we take care of our plants by watering them and putting them in the sun. The plants have grown so much in just a few days! This is a reminder to nourish and look after our minds and bodies each day as well.
There will also be a big focus on PE this term, as we have our Athletics Carnival coming up. Some students are participating in After School Athletics in preparation for the big day. During our PE lessons, with Miss Heard, we are loving our new Martial Arts program! Our class AFL footy tipping is well under way and Miss Gage is slowly converting everyone into Freo supporters (except for Jai as he is a diehard West Coast Eagles supporter). Star is currently on top of the class leader board and on her way to winning a canteen voucher!
Have a fantastic term 3 everybody!
Hello everyone from year 8.1 in ESC 7.
We have had a very exciting term so far, from starting Martial Arts lessons in sport to getting back out and about in the community for our Community Based Learning program, and are gaining lots of new skills! It has been fantastic to see our students navigating public spaces, transport and interacting politely with community workers.

Here are some of our student highlights from term 3:
Raggy- This term I have enjoyed going out on CBL with my class. I like to get hot chips with chilli sauce. I love going out on CBL.
Mikail- In term 3, I’ve enjoyed playing Kahoot. I like to win the most and I also like playing the pig game. I love going to D&T classes too.
Ayden- In term 3, I like going out on CBL. I also liked art. We made monsters and space with paint. I really liked reading Matilda with my class.
Zoe- In term 3, I really liked playing Kahoot with my friends and I really enjoy my dance lessons.
Ryan- This term I liked going to do cooking. We made fried rice and it tasted yummy. We also made fajitas from Mexico, it was tasty too.
Branden- This term, I like going out on CBL because I like all of the shops. I bought a pizza and a drink.
Jyrah- I like doing my dance class. It was fun showing my Tik Tok moves. I like to play with my friends at recess and lunch.
Madison- In term 3, I enjoyed sport when I beat Mikail. I like when we go out on CBL and I can buy a Kombucha. I really enjoyed it.
Toby- In term 3, I’ve enjoyed my cooking lessons with Mrs Sutherland.
This term has had a busy start. As part of Bush Rangers and ASDAN ESC 8 students have been engaged in learning about first aid and emergency procedures. They all had a go at practicing CPR on a dummy and it was interesting to learn the acronym DRSABCD. The nurse also gave a talk on maintaining good health which involved dental hygiene, physical fitness and the importance of a healthy diet. As part of art they created a first aid kit with the important items that are required. The students are learning how to floss their teeth to keep them clean.

The students have started their Community Based Learning program and have been going to Southlands Shopping Centre. They practiced their road safety skills, read their itinerary and kept a track of bus timings. The students used their SmartRider cards by tagging on and off and checking their balance.
In PCP the students have been identifying their own skills and qualities, and what skills are required for their dream job. Protective Behaviours lessons revolved around safe use of technology and community behaviours.
In biological science students have been exploring the characteristics of living and non-living things. They explored their school environment and used technology to take pictures of living and non-living things and presented the information in the form of Book Creator.

In HASS the students are busy setting up an enterprise to fundraise for a good cause. Some wonderful suggestions were contributed by the students. They collected data by voting which items would be more popular to sell. In home economics the students are getting more confident in using equipment and taking care of hygiene and hazards in the kitchen.
It’s a pleasure to see the students excited and ready to start the day every morning. They are learning to be more resilient and showing more understanding towards their peers when they are not having a good day. Peaceful Kids Meditation is something most of them look forward to and helps them relax their body and mind after the lunch break.
Term 3 has gotten off to a great start in ESC9! This term we enjoyed Multicultural Week and were able to sample lots of different foods from the teachers’ home countries. We also began Martial Arts Training classes and training for the School Athletics Carnival. We have a busy rest of the term planned with our first Community Based Learning outing commencing shortly and an exciting environmental excursion planned.
We also would like to congratulate Janelle Quek, who designed a beautiful reusable bag for Coles and won a national competition. We are all very proud of you!
Here are some highlights from this term.

Welcome to Term 3!
ESC 10 has been excited to head out once again on CBL. Students are using road crossing knowledge, social skills and functional math skills, as well as community awareness. We have ventured on the bus to Bull Creek Shopping Centre and will progress to Southlands Shopping Centre later in the term. Each outing provides the students with opportunities to select, order and purchase their own lunch. Last CBL outing the 8.3 students voted for Hungry Jacks and it was wonderful to see them showcasing their independence skills.
In science we are focusing on biological sciences and successfully growing water cress and broad beans which we hope to plant in the veggie garden very soon!

As part of our Zones of Regulation program, the students have been learning about what emotions correspond with each particular zone and how they can control these emotions. They are beginning to develop some fantastic toolboxes of strategies such as; take a deep breath, count to 10, go for a walk and use a sensory item.

Every second week the students enjoy Life Skills in the classroom and have the opportunity to practise skills such as meal preparation and washing the dishes. They consistently work as a team and we are very proud of them! So far this term we have made gourmet hotdogs and mini quiches. Stay tuned to see what else we will be making!
ESC 10 Team
ESC 11 has had a smooth start to term 3. The students have worked hard in all areas and every member of class has especially enjoyed learning AUSLAN. Signing AUSLAN is another language and offers students the opportunity to communicate with people they may otherwise not able to. Each child can now sign numbers up to 20 and a range of everyday words and sentences such as, “What is your name” and “It’s cold outside”.
During term 1 the students planted sunflower seeds in the class garden. With love and attention these grew to a metre high and became a pollen source for bees, not to mention enhancing the area around our classroom.

ESC11 staff take pride in the achievements your child has accomplished to date.
Ange Dinning
What a start it has been to term 3 in ESC 12. This term we have been very busy with a lot of new and different projects and activities.
For sport this term the boys have had the privilege of working with a Health and Physical Education student from the University of Notre Dame. It has been a great experience for the boys to meet new young and enthusiastic students who take them for a one on one sport lesson every Friday at the University. As well as meeting new people, this is a great opportunity for all students to develop their fundamental movement skills and represent Leeming ESC with pride. As a former Notre Dame student who was a part of this program I know that it also helped me build relationships with the students and gives everyone a chance to try a new experience. I look forward to watching how each student progresses throughout the term.
It has been a busy start to the term in class with the resumption of CBL, where we went to Bull Creek Shopping Centre. It was clear each student was itching to go out of the classroom and into the community. We revised our road crossings, identified different signs within a shopping centre and enjoyed lunch together before catching public transport back to school. We are looking forward to going to Southlands Shopping Centre in the coming days.
Within ESC 12 we have taken on a class enterprise for Father’s Day. For the dads reading this I won’t give away what we have made, however I can say that the boys have done a great job in sending out and collecting order forms as well as helping in the process of making our gift idea. I would like to thank all students, staff, parents and carers for your support and we hope you are happy with the results.
We hope that semester two is going to be as good as semester one within ESC 12. We will continue to have fun, learn and most of all enjoy being at school with our friends.
Thank you
Jack Drennan
What an incredible term we’ve had! We hit the ground running with the My Plan meetings and it was lovely to see all the parents working in unison with our school. We have also been working on updating our resumes, learning to fill in forms and looking at skills required in different jobs. We have also been sharpening our measurement skills in Maths. In our Peaceful Kids program, we have been learning breathing techniques to help us calm down. The students also shared stressful situations they’ve encountered and came up with some strategies. It is also lovely to see all our students going back to doing more work experience. Here is what they have to say about their work!
Jesse Crispin - Wednesday Work placement I went to GSI. I’m happy about doing the DVD section because I love DVD’s. I check the discs are not scratched.
Ben Armstrong - Wednesday Work placement I went to Alinea Op Shop. I like working at the Op Shop because it is fun. I check the colours of the clothes and match them up and check the prices of the clothes as well.
Kayla Muller:
Work Placement GSI - At GSI I like colour coding clothes, I also pick up the clothes that have been dropped on the floor and place them back on the hangers and back on the racks. I also tidy up the book area.
Wednesday Work Placement Living Emporium - I loved working at Living Emporium Cockburn. There I tidied the pillows on the shelf and colour coded them. Once I did that I opened boxes with the box cutter, I label the products and put them on the shelf. I find opening and crushing the boxes fun, pass my time with vacuuming the shop floor, folding blankets and putting them on the table nicely.
Tarkin Barker - Work Placement at Dome Café. I really enjoyed working at Dome, it’s a really great place to work at because my team are friendly and helpful. They really welcomed me on my first day and I really appreciated it. I put dishes into the dishwasher and cleaned the tables once the customers left. I have improved my communication skills while being there. I even make a few cold beverages.

Kiara Muller - Wednesday work placement Red Dot. I like working with Ms Banks and Nixon on Wednesdays at Red Dot. I like to put stuff on the shelves and price all the products. I open the box using a box cutter carefully and use a pricing gun to mark the products. I like doing different jobs at Red Dot. It’s fun and I like looking at what stuff they have, I really enjoyed it there.
Morgan - I like going to work at Streetscape Melville because I work with a great team. I also like the jobs that I do outside.
Jacob - I have been folding clothes at GSI. I am becoming good at it. One day, I can help mum at home.
Eve - I have been emptying plant pot containers and put it in a tray of twelve which gets packed up. I can work independently. I get my own equipment to complete all the tasks.
Patrick - I have been learning to face out stock and check the dates on products to make sure it is not expired. I like working at the supermarket.
David Barker - I love working at Activ Bentley. I am employed at Activ Bentley. I get to do different tasks. Some days, I pack water bottles in the trays.

Students have shown great progress during the Mobile Phone Program this term. They have focused on how their phones can help with important everyday tasks. Students have practised using their calculators on their phones to add up the cost of items to see if they can keep within a given budget. They have also focused on the importance of taking appropriate photos and asking for a person’s consent. Role plays have helped students to develop their understanding of asking for someone’s permission, being able to change their minds, and how photos on social media can be accessed by the public once uploaded. The next step is for them to know what to do if someone requests or send inappropriate images, and how to ask for help from a trusted adult.

In addition, students have been working hard to attempt mathematics tasks independently. In particular, well done to Kasper, Josh and Ruichen who have been working towards identifying groups, coins and notes. Students have also been investigating measurement. Using hefting and balance scales; students have compared and estimated the mass of items. Some have progressed to calibrating scales and learning how to read increments. They have also had fun comparing the capacity of containers. During P unit tasks, students have practised taking their clothing measurements and used online websites to identify suitable clothing items within a given budget.

CBL will recommence shortly to practise interpreting shopping centre maps, purchasing appropriate hygiene items, and making lunch orders more independently; either using the correct coins or PayPass. It is great to see students access public transport and cross the road safely with less staff assistance. We will continue to develop these important life skills throughout the year ahead.
It has been a brilliant start to term 3 with all ESC 15 students working hard in class and at their respective workplaces. Many of our classmates are now at work more often than in school which is amazing to see, thanks to the WPL team, parents and support services for making this happen.
This term we have already raised money for Perth Children’s Hospital foundation. The staff of ESC 15 donated goods to a hamper while students sold raffle tickets. Congratulations to Mrs Bruns on winning our raffle. We managed to raise $132.00 for the foundation. A certificate is on its way.
We are very much looking forward to our day out next week. The students have planned a trip to Perth to buy lunch then to Elizabeth Quay for an ice-cream. All planning including using the Transperth website and budgeting the day was done by the students.
Thank you to all the parents who have come in to complete the final reviews of My Plans thus far. It is always great to catch up and see what we can do to make sure our students leave us with the best possible pathways ahead of them. I look forward to seeing the last few families over the next week or two.

Yolande Stewart
This term in music we are learning to play the drums. I like the sound of the drums. The drums are brown in colour. The drums are loud and heavy. We clean the drums at the end of the lesson.
Karleigh Evans
PHYS ED JENELLE HEARD & JENNA ALLOMES
It has been a great term so far in the Health and Physical Education department, with things starting to get back to normal. We are very excited to be running the House Athletics Carnival in week 8. Students have been practising various athletics events during sport lessons and have achieved brilliant results.
After School Athletics
The after school athletics program is underway, with a massive 50+ students attending the first session. It was fantastic to see so many smiling faces and all students actively involved in every activity. Students have participated in javelin, relays, shotput, hurdles and team games so far. Over the next few weeks we will also be covering long jump, discuss & sprints. I would like to acknowledge our amazing staff who offered their time to assist in running the program. We are looking forward to the next 3 sessions!

Notre Dame
The Notre Dame program is up and running, where students from our centre go to the University of Notre Dame on Fridays and participate in one on one Physical Education sessions, with students studying to be Health and Physical Education teachers. Our students have already developed great relationships with their buddies and thoroughly enjoy being a part of the program each week. The aim of the program is to build skills such as strength, hand eye coordination, game awareness, sport skills and cooperation, while working one on one with a buddy, who delivers a personally tailored program. Student progress is monitored over the 10 week program and it is fantastic to see the improvements. Some activities that students have been involved in so far include basketball, soccer, AFL, balancing and target practise.
Martial Arts
Our Martial Arts program has been a huge success, with the students and staff learning some great self-defence moves. We have been very impressed with how quickly students are picking up some of the complex skills. So far they have demonstrated kicks, punches and escapes from holds. They are all very excited to be working towards an impressive spin kick!

This term, the students working within the ACTIV internship Pilot Program commenced their practical work placements. Here’s what a few of them have to say of their experience so far:
Kiara Muller – Red Dot
“I do pricing and open and unpack boxes. I like it.”
Kayla Muller – Living Emporium
“It’s fun. I do lots of jobs like unboxing and folding and tidying the pillows on the shelves.”
Anna Johnson – Zenith Insurance
“I like going through all the insurance claims and seeing if they are right. I tick them if they’re correct and then we scan them and file them on the computer – it’s interesting.”
Joe Gibson – Zenith Insurance
“I like learning about finance because it’s interesting.”
Xavier Umbagai – Zenith Insurance
“I liked watching Cyber-Security videos. I liked using the scanner.”
Some of the senior students from within the workplace learning program would also like to share how their placement experience is going:
Mahshid – Harrisdale Primary School
“I love being with the kids. I love teaching them and helping them learn new things. I love helping them with their errors when they read and write. I loved the whole experience. This has been my favourite workplace.”
Nikita – Brandons Shredding
“I liked shredding papers. I am good at it and I do a good job. I painted paper-mache flowers for sale.”
Joseph Abdamalek – GSI warehouse
“I like sorting movies and video games and putting them in the box.”

At our assembly it was a great pleasure to award Nixon Cheah our Workplace Learning Employee Of The Month. Nixon is commencing his work trial two days per week with Activ Bentley. Nixon has been busy putting the showbags together. He is also working very hard at Proudly Productive on woodwork and craft projects to sell in their on site shop one day per week, increasing to two days per week in September. Both of these placements are so lucky to have such a hard working happy young man join their teams!
We are looking forward to having our year 10s join the program for their very first work experience placement next term!!
Below is a photo of Nick with his outstanding vase and flower painting that he created in Art.
Proudly displayed in the front office for all to see.

Your generosity and willingness to extend a helping hand to others has been a gift and a blessing.
