Term 2 is coming to an end and staff and students are looking forward to a well-deserved relaxing holiday break. A very special thank you to Leeming SHS Esc staff, you have all been flexible and have adapted to every challenge to make sure positive learning experiences have continued for our students this semester.
Reports will be sent out via Connect this week. Although a very challenging and interrupted semester, students have continued to achieve and make positive progress towards their individual outcomes and programs. This is a credit to our teachers, and students should be very proud of their achievements.
The Education department has announced the phase 4 operating guidelines for schools, with some restrictions:
- Interschool activities can occur.
- Camps can occur, however venue capacity should not be exceeded and schools must ensure camp providers comply with WA COVID-19 Health guidelines.
- Work placements can occur. Schools should conduct work placement risk assessments and ensure employers comply with WA COVID-19 Health guidelines.
- Incursions and excursions can occur. Supervisors/staff should maintain physical distancing of one person per two square metres.
- Major events held at off-site venues such as school balls, music concerts and sporting events can occur. Maximum numbers will be determined by the two square metre per person rule.
- Assemblies and other school community events can occur. Adult visitors and staff should maintain physical distancing of one person per two square metres.
- Parent/carer meetings can occur. Adults should maintain physical distancing of one person per two square metres and good hygiene practices should be applied.
- Visitors and third-party providers on school sites can occur. Regular cleaning of used areas and minimising contact with the broader school population should apply. Visitors on school sites should sign in and maintain physical distancing of one person per two square metres.
In Term 3, there will be two pupil free School Development Days, Monday 20th July and Monday 24th August. This is due to the COVID disruptions at the beginning of Term 2 impacting our scheduled School Development Day.
I hope all staff, students and families enjoy a restful holiday break.

After a challenging start to the term, I am pleased to say that the team in ESC 1 are fully up and running. It is hard for us to believe we are already half way through the year!
This term we went for our first CBL outing to visited the Stockland Shopping Centre. We have also been able to resume our work experience program at Striker Leisure Centre which has been great. Our students have been learning valuable skills for the workplace including wearing the appropriate attire, arriving at the correct starting time and signing themselves in and out of the workplace. We have also completed a retail course through GSI. This was a great experience for the students and gave us an opportunity to take part in GSI’s first Zoom course. We would like to thank Dani and her team for running this fantastic course.
Students have also been working hard on time and money skills in class. They have been learning how to read time and identify different facts about time, such as what you can do in a second, minute or hour.
Thank you to the amazing team, Mr Borges, Ms Soares, Ms Temple for all of their support. I would also like to thank our parents for their ongoing support in this challenging year. We wish you all a fantastic holiday break and look forward to seeing you all in term 3!
Nelly Evenis - This term has been fun but we could not go to work because of the COVID-19. I had my school photo shoot and it was fun, I did not have to do work most of the day. I made my iMovie 'Bad Choices and Good Choices' with Ellie and it was good but Ellie and I had to do it again because we didn’t have enough angles. I also did an iMovie with Josh and it was fun because there were not many worksheets. Last week we did role plays and Luka was really silly when he pretended to fall like an old man and Tania ran from the audience pretending to be an ambulance. I go back to work experience next term at Manning Men’s Shed and I can’t wait to see all my friends there and use the tools.
Kane Kutniewski - This term has been fun because we have been doing D&T and I am making a fruit basket for my Nan and Pop. Every Thursday I have been going to Drumbeat and I love the music and hitting the drums with my hands. I have also been watching drawing videos of making Fortnight characters. I want to say that Mr Caddy was the greatest man at school for doing travel training. I also love seeing Ms Vangi at Leeming Link and helping her with activities and packing up. Next term I hope to have work experience at Bunnings in Cannington with Josh.
Josh Mischefski - This term has been okay, I haven’t been able to go back to work experience because of the Coronavirus. I had about 2 weeks off at the start of the term because of my Aunty’s Passing, but I’ve loved seeing Miss Vangi before class in the mornings and discussing things with her and talking about my life and family. I go to Drumbeat on Thursdays and I like to work with Ms FP. I’ve learned a bit about good and bad choices and about bushfires and how they do the burning off in March - November. We did some role playing last week about making good and bad choices and they were good. Luka was really funny when he pretended to fall.
Lauren Robinson - This term has been amazing. I have learnt about passing levels on the driving game. I have learnt about different pros and cons of vehicles and made a Popplet . I miss going to the pet shop for work placement because I enjoyed doing all the different kinds of jobs and meeting the animals. I learnt about die back which is a disease of the tree and when you stand on the die back you wash your feet down on the special mat so it doesn’t spread around the national park.

It is hard to believe that it is half way through the year already, the winter holiday is looming and ESC 4 have been working hard!
Some of the locations where our students attend workplace learning have reopened, but not all. So some students have returned to the workplace and others are working on work related skills on Wednesdays.
COVID-19 has continued to affect our ability to continue travel training and community based excursions.
We have been working hard on our typing skills and seen some amazing statistics demonstrating improvement.
Again, thanks to the wonderful staff in our room for their support and humour to get through anything. Mrs Johnson, Mrs Banks, Mrs Lester-Smith, and Mrs Blaxell. Also Mrs Brayne and Mrs Morgan, who have become welcome regulars in our classroom.

Kaya (hello) The classroom has been immersed in Aboriginal Education this term. The students celebrated Reconciliation Week, encompassing Sorry Day, the Mabo Decision, Keeping Languages Alive and a day full of NAIDOC activities. We have deepened our knowledge on Aboriginal history researching the Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander flag. Learning the Aboriginal flags role in land rights and the right to vote. Students distinguish the local land (boodjar) as Whaduk Country and Noongar as the local Aboriginal language of Whaduk Country.

I am amazed at the amount of Noongar language the students can recall. The class has really enjoyed singing the ‘Acknowledgment to Country’, ‘Wanjoo’ and ‘Solid Rock’. As part of Bush Rangers and HASS, students have illustrated flora and fauna totems and learning their role in caring for the environment. Students have entered their totem illustrations into the ABC’s Indigenous Language Art Competition (best of luck).

Logging onto laptops and completing activities on the Connect grid has become a daily exercise. It has been rewarding to see the student’s independence with IT skills increase. Students can continue to access Connect and Seesaw at home to share their learning experiences with family.
What a wonderful term! ESC staff are extremely blessed to work with such well-mannered, respectful and eager learners. Thank you to Ms L, Mrs Blacklock and Ms Smith for their handwork, positiveness and commitment to making a difference every day.
Wishing you all a safe, restful and enjoyable, two week break. Thank you!
Boorda (bye), ESC 5.
Term 2 has just flown by, it’s almost hard to believe we are on the cusp of semester 2 already! This term ESC 6 have focused on Aboriginal Education in our HASS and Bush Rangers classes. On the 26th of May it was National Sorry Day, and the following day was the beginning of Reconciliation Week. ESC 6 learned about the history and meaning of these two very important dates, and how it is a time to celebrate and build on positive and respectful relationships and connections between Australians and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We engaged in a range of activities, informative videos, PowerPoint presentations and stories to help build our understanding of National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and the history of the custodian land owners of Australia. One of our favourite stories was Sorry Day by Coral Vass.

We have been working hard in our other learning areas too this term, including protective behaviours, maths and health. In health we have focused on healthy eating and nutrition, and have been learning about the food groups and how to plan a healthy meal. This links to our ASDAN Key Steps program under the health module. In maths, which is a crowd favourite, we have been focusing on money, identifying Australian notes and coins, and are beginning to count small sets of coins to determine the value. ESC 6 students LOVE the money games and activities we have been playing to consolidate learning.
Have a look below at our term 2 highlights!

Bring on semester 2!
Hello everyone from Year 8.1 in ESC 7.
We can hardly believe that the holidays are now upon us and we are half-way through the school year, after what seems to have been a very quick term 2!
We have all settled back into normal school life well and have been busy practising yoga and mindful meditations to support our mental and physical wellbeing – we are a very flexible bunch! We have also spent lots of time in the kitchen cooking up a storm. Our favourite dishes to make this term have been healthy baked potato wedges and chicken nuggets!

From us all in ESC 7, we would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break.
ESC 8 students have had a very busy term achieving their Individual Educational Goals. With the situation easing around the school, the students are enjoying participating in team games and social skills while maintaining the safe distancing rules.
In HASS the students focused on tourist destination in WA and Protective Behaviour lessons focused around good and bad secrets and sharing these secrets with someone in their safety network. On Mondays during PCP, the students focussed on their own behaviours and the choices they made. In Bush Rangers they looked at hazards around the school environment, the PPE required and what precautions they need to take.
As part of Aboriginal Education, the students participated in Reconciliation and Naidoc Week activities. STEM classes have been fun investigating how energy works and conducting experiments to test gravity, kinetic, heat, sound, light and solar energy. They made paper aeroplanes to demonstrate transfer of energy from potential to kinetic and also made a solar cooker to test how the light energy from the sun or lamp turns into heat energy to make S’mores. The students were mesmerised when they learnt about Mrs Pereira our sports education assistant had participated in the Olympics representing the Australian Hockey team and won two gold medals. It’s a privilege to have a champion at our school.

The term break is around the corner and I would like to thank my awesome team of EAs and parents for a successful completion of term 2. We all deserve this break and wish everyone a safe and happy break to get their batteries charged to be ready to kick off term 3.
Mrs Khosla
It is close to the end of term and we are very excited for the holidays! The last five weeks have been packed with enriched learning and many laughs in our classroom. Achievement levels have been high and I am sure you will be thrilled with your child’s report! We have been learning Indonesian as part of ASDAN, cooking up a storm each Wednesday, investigating in science and using some really cool technology in STEM.
Below are some thoughts from the ESC 10 superstars!
Oscar: I like kicking the footy on the oval and getting my steps up to beat Ms Knox.
Mitch: I have enjoyed doing cooking in class.
Jackson: I love Life Skills because we make lots of different things.
Mason: I like using my iPad for research.
Cameron: I loved making burgers in Life Skills.
Ethan: I have really liked using the Ozo-Bots, they’re cool!
Joaquin: I love playing soccer in phys ed and doing cooking each week.

Next term we will get to go on CBL again and the students are beyond excited to use public transport and travel to various locations. Check back in with us to hear about our adventures!
The ESC 10 team.
Well what a term we have had, with COVID-19, social distancing, online teaching and learning.
Try as it may, COVID-19 was not able to stop our students learning. Thank you to all those parents who assisted their children to complete work sent home and online during this period.
Throughout the term we have been learning about ecosystems and biodiversity. Students have focused on learning the worlds continents and temperate zones. The class created a colourful Amazon Rainforest display, showcasing the diverse biodiversity within this ecosystem.

ESC11 has continued to run their business enterprise ‘selling muffins’ to staff each week and to date, we have made a nice profit. The profits will be donated to ‘Soldiers On’ early in term 3.
With the start of football, the students are participating in a class weekly footy tipping competition. Leading is Mrs Carter on 32, who must have inside information along with Sam on 31 and Alyssa close behind on 29. “Go the Dockers”!
Have a lovely mid-year holiday.
Angelique Dinning
Wow! How quick has the time flown by. To think that we are half way through the year already. It feels like only last week I was getting to know my awesome class in ESC 12. It is clear that all the students have been working very hard this term and deserve a well-earned break.
After an interrupted start to the term all students have settled in well to their school routines and have achieved some great results this term. We have successfully planted and are caring for our own flower garden, created our own stories in literacy, and have learnt about Australian and indigenous history.
The boys have created many different pieces of artwork this term. These include Aboriginal dot paintings, making a balloon person and designing their own class flag. Every student has displayed a positive attitude to their class work and is trying their best each and every day. I look forward to seeing the great work continue into next term.
I would lastly like to thank all parents and staff for their tireless work this term. You have all been very supportive to both myself and the students, and have helped to create a great working environment.
Enjoy your break and I look forward to seeing you all next term.
It has been yet another busy term in ESC 13. In Week 5, we hosted the very first Webex assembly and I am so proud of how well our students conducted and presented themselves. A special mention to the wonderful and supportive staff at ESC 13 and IT support that made the magic come alive online.
As the term progressed, more students have been going back to work experience. It is good to see some normality for the students. Those who have yet to return to work experience have been busy working on works skills activities provided by Proudly Productive. Our students have also been busy working on developing fine motor skills through our work skills activity boxes.

A major focus this term is developing skills in using transport. We have been learning to chart our travel plan to and from various destinations using the Transperth Journey Planner and also exploring landmarks through google maps. We have been practising various scenarios of what could possibly go wrong while out in the community and discussing some solutions and ideas. It is heartwarming to see their growing independence in accessing public transport.

In Maths, we have been learning to read time and understanding, deducing and calculating what one hour or half hour later looks like.
During the reconciliation week, we have been learning about National Sorry Day and Mabo Day. We engaged in a range of activities such as watching BTN video, Powerpoint presentation, role plays and discussions to reinforce our understanding and build on a positive and respectful relationship with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Time has gone so quick and it is hard to believe that it is half way through the year already. I wish you and your family a restful holiday break.
From the ESC 13 team
Ms Parwani, Mrs Cox, Mrs Chamberlain, Mrs Subramaniam and Mrs Shivers
So much amazing work has taken place in ESC 14 this term! In particular, during our ASDAN Life Skills Challenge and Using Transport units.
Students have stepped out of their comfort zones and have been willing to take part in role plays demonstrating both positive and negative social skills. They have put their trust in each other’s hands during blindfolded obstacle courses, learning about the importance of attentive listening and following directions. Students had fun being ‘space invaders’ during role plays about acceptable personal space, and identifying uncomfortable feelings when someone is standing too close.

Miss Megrail had fun when students boarded her classroom bus and she was an inconsiderate passenger singing and having her music too loud in a public space. Students could identify the behaviours being shown as inappropriate or dangerous. They also investigated the possible legal consequences of negative choices and the impact these can have on others.
Students were happy to be out on CBL once again, practising their transport and purchasing skills during trips to Cockburn Shopping Centre. It was great to see their positive behaviour choices when out in the community and growing independence when accessing public transport.

We also had the pleasure of hosting the assembly at the end of the term. A big thankyou to Mrs McCarthy for all her hard work in organising the assembly to take place both online via Webex for parents, and in the theatre where staff and students were permitted to attend.
Well done ESC14 superstars!
Morning Tea Report by Henry Baum
On June 23 2020, ESC 16 had a tea party in our classroom. The best part was that we had scones with cream and jam and had milk with tea. I’ve never had milk with tea before or scones with jam and cream. We made two batches of scones, one batch was gluten free. Karleigh and Hanna made gluten free scones and Ezra and Lachlan made the other ones. Overall, it was nice and enjoyable for everyone. I would love to have another tea party again soon.
PHYS ED JENELLE HEARD & JENNA HEARD
The second half of term 2 has been getting quite busy, with a few more sporting opportunities coming up for our students! The Year 7 and 8s have been perfecting their soccer skills and participating in competitive games and competitions against each other. The year 9s and 10s have been lucky enough to have some coaches from Bullcreek Tennis Club, come and take clinics, during PE time. There have been some fantastic skills demonstrated, with the coaches very impressed by our students. Senior school have been participating in soccer and dance sessions during PE. Students have learnt some groovy dances including Space-jam, YMCA and The Lion King! We hope to showcase this to our centre during week 10, how exciting!

With restrictions lifting, we are hoping to go ahead with sports carnivals and some interschool sport competitions in term 3! We are looking forward to our athletics carnival and can’t wait to get training underway. The middle school will be starting a brand new program called Martiability, which has a focus of some martial arts movements. While the senior school will be off to Notre Dame to work with the university students on their own individual programs.

Watch this space for information about after school athletics, during term 3!
We hope everyone has a lovely, relaxing holidays!
The Triple J team
We have had a fabulous end to term 2 in the workplace learning department!
Week 8, students were able recommence attending a number of work placements. Students were thrilled, as were our host employers.
We congratulated Amasha at our assembly as he received the Workplace Learning Employee of the Month award. Amasha received the award for his achievement at Activ, receiving a paid work trial, which is awesome!! Amasha is practising his work skills in both the airline and projects department. He is settling well into the new work environment and getting to know his new team members. Way to go Amasha!

We wish Kayla and Kiara Muller all the very best as they commence their paid employment with GSI retail stores during the school holidays, we can’t wait to hear all about it!
All senior students have been issued their brand new workplace learning shirts that will be worn next term. They look super!
*Workplace Learning commences week 1 of Term 3*.
The second half of Term 2 has certainly sped by very quickly!
Mrs Houden and I along with Miss Tanith and Miss Emma from Indigo, have been having plenty of fun with the students on our Leeming Link days.
From drinking Hot Chocolate and Marshmallows on those chilly days to Making Damper for NAIDOC Week, and all the activities in between, we have been very busy.
Amongst the activities we celebrated Earth Day with our Earth Art, using paper towel and food colouring; laughed until our tummies hurt on our Stand Up Comedy day; practised our AUSLAN during our Signing Chinese Whispers session and mastered our fine motor skills making Origami.
