The 2020 school year is now well under way with students engaged in a variety of exciting programs. Welcome to our twenty-seven new families, I look forward to getting to know you all throughout the year. Congratulations to all the year 7 students, they have transitioned into their new school environment and routine extremely well. Thank you to staff, students and families for the smooth and successful start to the 2020 school year.
There are 137 students currently enrolled at Leeming SHS ESC, our school continues to grow each year. This year we have six new teaching staff members:
Year 7 Ms Ratto,
Year 8 Ms Sutherland
Year 9 Mr Drennan
Year 9 Mrs Bainbridge
Year 10 Mr Frewer
Year 12 Ms Megrail
We also welcome four new education assistants: Ms Lersdejsakul, Mrs Enright, Mrs McCarthy and Mrs Chamberlain.
On Friday 21st February our year 12 students enjoyed the School Ball at Fremantle Sailing Club. This was one of our largest cohorts of year 12 students to attend a school ball. It takes a great deal of organisation and coordination to make sure the event is enjoyable and memorable, thank you to Ms FP and Mrs Stewart for all your organisation and to the many staff who assisted Mrs Stewart on the night. The feedback from staff and students has been very positive and I have also received lovely feedback from parents and grandparents who thoroughly enjoyed the Pre-Ball event, where families, students and staff enjoyed the opportunity to share this very special occasion together. A very big thank you to Dawn Barker and Joanne Claydon for organising the Pre-Ball event and limousines for all the students. The limousine ride is always a highlight of the night!
The School Board met for the first meeting of 2020 on Monday 24th March. The Board welcomed our new parent representatives; Jocelyn Morgan and Francesca Robb. We are very fortunate to have such a collaborative Board with diverse skills and backgrounds. As a Board we meet twice a term to establish and review the Business Plan priorities and the financial planning to meet these priorities and directions.

Leeming SHS has been identified as being in a bushfire zone by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). This puts special responsibility on the school community to be vigilant during the summer months. It also means the school will likely be pre-emptively closed if the forecast is for a Catastrophic Fire Danger in the Perth Metropolitan Area. This is a very rare event. When given advance warning by the DFES that a Catastrophic rating has been forecast for a given day, the Deputy Director General, Schools will probably direct the pre-emptive closure of the school. If the school receives such a directive, you will be informed of the possible planned closure.
I look forward to seeing families at the first Parent Network meeting and assembly on Monday 9th March, further information will be sent home during the week.
Mrs Davies

Leeming Links is an initiative run by Vangi Evangeli (school chaplain) and Cathy Houden (Student Services Manager) on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at lunch and recess. It gives students an opportunity to engage in some fun activities while also developing their communication and social skills. We’ve attached the timetable to discuss with your child. Feel free to drop us a line and let us know of any other ideas that they may have for Leeming Link in the future!

We can hardly believe it is week 5 already as we settle in to our new routine as year 10’s and more importantly, begin our careers as senior school students. The start of our term has been filled with new concepts, including our commencement of the Workright program that is targeting the skills necessary to start work experience in the future. We have also started our work on the first unit of the mathematics preliminary units, which is focused on planning a barbeque. We are all very excited to put our planning in to practice and have a fantastic lunch together.
On behalf of myself, Ms Sonia Soares, Ms Lauren Temple, Mrs Dianne Williams and Mrs Donnell Blaxell we would like to welcome you 2020 and we are looking forward to a fantastic year in ESC 1.
Halfway into term 1 and the year 11 students of ESC 3 are off to a ‘flying’ start. We have undertaken almost all of our My Plan Meetings and each student has now focused on key, individual goals that were discussed with mum, dad, and myself. We have also begun our broad range of Work Place Learning and it is great to receive feedback that EVERY student is tackling it head on, with a maturity and focus and I am so proud to see some students stepping out of their comfort zones.
Brandon, who was a bit nervous at the start, has returned from his first week of St John of God’s kitchen and is overjoyed with his efforts in food preparation and independently travelling.
Kane and Josh are the Bunnings ‘Bros’ and are supporting each other and working side by side.
Ellie has already started on a huge journey and is confidently undertaking her Certificate II in Hospitality at TAFE on a Wednesday, and is finally fulfilling her dream of work experience in Childcare and loves working/playing in the sandpit.
Tania has been working up a sweat at the G.S.I café and has proven that she can listen to instructions and complete her work more independently. Bravo!

Liam’s efforts at AYLA have been noted and he has even begun to use a diary to keep him on track with his duties on the job. Great to see him applying what we spoke about at his My Plan meeting. Anja and Gary should be ‘Super Proud’ of their hard-working man.
Lauren has fulfilled her lifelong dream of working with animals and has embraced Pet Stock and the many duties, including tending to the fish and the tanks.
Luka has undertaken a work experience position at Coles ‘his dad’s competition’ and is loving the many challenges and is always dressed professionally. Pizzas have never been stacked with such precision.
Nelly is enjoying the ‘manly’ duties of Men’s Shed and is happy in an environment where he can work with his hands. He was also very excited when he and Max saw a rat being squished by a bus on their work journey. Gross!!
We have also worked hard in our maths classes where we were challenged to plan for a party and use our counting skills to calculate our party supplies. We worked in pairs to listen and mark our partners on their counting up to 10.
It has been a great start to the term and I am proud almost every day of how far these students have come. The dynamic of students, teachers and support staff is positive and filled with laughs and milestones. Let’s keep going team!

Welcome back to Leeming SHS ESC. “Hello from ESC 4”, here we are in week 5 already. Time has flown and the class has settled into their new normal, which is always changing in year 11.
The focus is on the workplace and gaining independence. We have been learning about selecting and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, expected behaviours and Codes of Conduct in different communities, and we are planning a party in the classroom for maths (all work of course!).
I would like to thank the education assistants in the room for their invaluable support from the start of term. Mrs Johnson, Mrs Banks Mrs Lester-Smith, and Mr Kelly on Thursday and Fridays, we are all getting to know each other and our routines, and we have hit the ground running.

Hello and welcome back to Leeming SHS ESC! ESC 7 have had a great start to the new school year and the students have made a smooth transition into year 8. We have loved hearing about each other’s summer holidays and getting to know our staff and students.
In class we are enjoying reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Imagining what it would be like to go to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory has been making our mouth’s water! We even had a treasure hunt in class to experience how it would feel to be lucky enough to find a golden ticket.
We have been out on the courts practising the Bush Ranger drill. Thank you to Mr Z for testing us! He can confirm that we are showing great promise of performing a very slick march.
We would also like to congratulate one of our own students – Branden McCaw on his appointment as a Bush Ranger Leader. We know you will do a fantastic job in your new leadership role Cadet!
I would like to thank our amazing Education Assistants, Chloe Hodge and Lisa Palma for their invaluable support from the start of term. Here’s to a great year ahead!

What an awesome start to 2020 with my year 8 students this year! We welcomed Fatima and Kiara to our all boy’s classroom which has brought a pleasant change. ESC 8 students have been very busy reinforcing the class and school rules and values and being good role models for the new year 7 students.
The students have been participating in Person Centered Planning where they have been learning about identifying their own emotions. In protective behaviours they have been learning about keeping their body safe and identifying early warning signs. My Bush Ranger cadets have been working hard to keep the environment clean, wearing appropriate PPE and are planning a Recycling Project to reduce waste. Workskill lessons with Ms Simmons have been interesting learning about manual handling and hazards at the workplace. Sports lessons with Ms Allomes is all about team spirit and practising their football skills.

Students have had the opportunity to make their own choices of preferred option classes and can select two options out of the five given. (Dance, Art, Drama, STEM and D&T). The students have transitioned beautifully and adapted to the new routines.
In numeracy we have been conducting surveys, collected data and made some interpretations. Setting the time and learning to count and use money is work in progress.
Self-care, cooking, washing and following daily jobs is part of our independent life skills. Students are learning to be more punctual and independent in their daily routines.

CBL has started in full swing where my little smart riders are ready to get on board public transport and use their SmartRiders to explore the facilities in the community and demonstrate appropriate etiquette.
In HASS the students have been learning about the Aboriginal culture through Dreamtime Stories. They are also learning about international migration into Australia, their first country of research was China, its culture and festivities. The students celebrated Chinese New Year, savoured some Chinese cuisine and our special guest was Ms McPierzie who taught the students to wish Happy Chinese New Year using AUSLAN sign language.

All this would not have been possible without my two dynamic team members, Ms Mitchell and Ms Patterson. A big shout out to the amazing parents and carers who have always extended their invaluable support. Great team work ESC 8 students, staff and parents.
Mrs Khosla
We’ve had a fantastic start to high school in ESC 9. We’ve been busy learning the class room routines, getting to know each other. Here are some blurbs students made for their news letter.

It has been a busy, but very successful start to term 1. We’ve been exploring Earth & Space Sciences, doing lots of measurement and investigating chance and data. Every day is a new set of learning challenges and these year 8’s never hesitate to give everything a go! We have also been lucky enough to select option classes based on our personal preferences - stay tuned for some great acting skills, dancing and D&T creations (just to name a few!).
Below are some thoughts about the start of the year from the ESC 10 boys:
Cameron: ‘I like using different things in maths, like chocolate!’
Oscar: ‘I can’t wait for CBL, it’s going to be great fun!’
Mitchell: ‘I love going to music and dance’
Ethan: ‘I like learning about maths’

Check back in week 10 for some more awesome adventures!
The ESC 10 Team

Year 9.2 has had a terrific start to the year with students and staff settling in smoothly. The class is completing a number of programs this year including ASDAN’s Transition Challenge, Business Enterprise not to mention the Bush Rangers program, where your child will learn the importance of being environmentally friendly.
Students have already planted vegetable seedling to grow produce for our class enterprise (baking savoury muffins).

We are also learning a song about koalas, which the class will perform at week 10s assembly. One of the student’s favourite lessons is our morning Power Point, where the students sing, learn time: dates, months and seasons, new vocabulary and view the daily visual timetable.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year.
Mrs Angelique Dinning
The staff and students in ESC 13 have had a busy and exciting start to the year. ESC 13 has an amazing team with Mrs Chamberlain, Mrs Cox, Mrs Subramaniam and Mrs Shivers. Students have been participating in a range of activities in the class and I am impressed with how well they have adapted to their new routines. The staff in ESC 13 are also impressed with the high standard of positive team work and independence displayed by the students.
This year, we will be working on ASDAN Lifeskills Challenges. The topic in the Lifeskills Challenge is so varied with different levels of challenge. My aim is to select and plan individualised programs to meet the needs of each child based on the discussion at My Plan meetings. Hence, every child’s ASDAN challenge will differ.
This term, we have planned an exciting trip to Sculptures by the Sea. Students will plan the excursion and use public transports to places such as Cockburn Gateway Shopping centre and Elizabeth Quay. Activities such as these will allow them to practise their transport training and their social skills as the year continues.
The highlight of the term was definitely the Year 12 Ball. Students enjoyed the Pre-Ball and took memorable photos with their friends and family, before being whisked away in their luxurious Hummer limousines to the Fremantle Sailing Club where they had a delectable meal and danced the night away. It was a night they will always remember!

What an amazing start to 2020 it has been! We are fortunate to have an awesome, supportive team with Mei, Toni and Nicky. I have been very welcomed by staff, parents and students and I’m looking forward to the exciting year ahead together.
Students have begun their P Units which focus on providing real life tasks with transferable skills. In english, students have engaged in role plays and are focusing on enhancing their communication skills to support workplace learning experiences. Practising job interview speeches and creating resumes also provide opportunities to prepare for the workplace. In maths, students are reinforcing their everyday skills such as recognising place value and creating budgets to help them plan ahead to pay for bills and understanding the importance of saving for the future.
The Zones of Regulations Program has enabled students to identify how they are feeling and also take steps to self-regulating their emotions when they are not feeling classroom ready. This has been supported by the URSTRONG Friendship Program, which teaches students the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships, and what they can do to problem solve more independently. The Lifeskills Challenge Program also enhances their ability to make safe and acceptable choices, with a focus on social skills and the possible outcomes of both positive and negative decisions.
Community Based Learning outings will continue to support students to effectively use public transport, practise road safety and provide opportunities to use their SmartRiders and purchase their own lunch. The focus of Bush Rangers this term reinforces the importance of how to work safely in the natural environment by identifying appropriate PPE equipment, hazards and manual handling techniques.
The Year 12 Ball was another event that has taken place this term that was a huge success! Students enjoyed the Pre-Ball having photos with their friends and family, before being whisked away in their luxurious Hummer limousines to the Fremantle Sailing Club. It was an experience they won’t forget, with a delicious buffet, and dancing the night away. Well done to Josh Evans from our class who won the award for best dressed boy on the evening.

With such a memorable start to the year, I can’t wait to see what exciting things are in store for us!
Tammy Megrail
Hello from ESC 16. I am a new teacher to Leeming ESC my name is Emma Bainbridge, class teacher. We have made a magnificent start to the year in our new room, the renovated outdoor classroom. We enjoy sharing our outdoor space with the chickens and can hear them clucking away when we have the window open.
We have been swimming on Friday’s at Coogee Beach with Miss Heard. In music the class has learnt to play a few bars of ‘Hit the Road Jack’ with Mrs Damos. We have started learning about being a ‘Supportive Bystander’ in a bullying situation and have made pop stick puppets to practise our skills to help others.
PHYS ED JENELLE HEARD & JENNA ALLOMES
Sporting Super Stars!!
2020 is going to be a great year for the Physical Education department with different programs, exciting excursions and new equipment. We welcome back Ms Allomes to the team and look forward to the AFL rival with Ms Heard. Our first new initiative has started with swimming classes heading to the beach for the first time. The students seem to enjoy being in a different environment and learning more water safety skills. While we still have a focus on developing swimming strokes we are also practising rescues, emergency situations at the beach and how to stay safe in and around open water.

We have a cricket carnival coming up in week 7 which proved very successful last year. In conjunction with the carnival we have WACA coaches coming out to run some sessions with the students. This is a great way to fine tune the student’s skills so we can participate at a high level at the carnival.
Sports leaders will also be announced by the end of the term.
The “Triple J” team (J. Allomes, J. Heard & J. Pereira) are looking forward to the year ahead!
