Our Year 12 students had an enjoyable night at the school ball recently. Thank you to Ms Franceschini-Piil for organising the school ball and to the many staff who assisted Ms FP on the night, I heard we have some very energetic dancers amongst our staff and students and the night was enjoyed by all. I have received wonderful feedback from parents and grandparents who thoroughly enjoyed the Pre-Ball, where families, students and staff enjoyed the opportunity to share this very special occasion. A very big thank you to Leticia Grant for hosting the Pre-Ball again this year.
Parents of senior school students, please do not use the service road off Aulberry Parade to drop off or pick your child. We have had complaints from the gardeners and delivery trucks because the road is often blocked by parents. Senior school students must be dropped off or picked up on Findlay Road.
Our first assembly was held on Monday 25th March, thank you to Mrs Dinning’s class for hosting the assembly. Our next assembly will be held on Monday 8th April and a Parent Network meeting will take place before the assembly. This is a great opportunity for parents and carers to get to know one another and also to be provided with relevant information from guest speakers. Further information will be provided closer to the date by Mrs Houden.
Leeming SHS ESC Community Support Project
Towards the end of the 2018 school year the Board of Leeming SHS ESC initiated an ongoing project to provide practical and useful support to families in the school community who are under pressure. We take the opportunity to introduce this project to new members of our school community as we start our 2019 school year.
We ask families in our school, if they are able, to deliver to our Administration Building the following suggested items:
- uniform items that may no longer be suitable sizes for children in your family - they can be donated to other students.
- toiletry items (soaps, combs, brushes, deodorants etc)
- female sanitary products
- male and female underwear (new and packaged)
- tinned food and other non-perishables
The school will ensure that anything you donate will be forwarded directly to families in the school who would benefit and also greatly appreciate the care.
We thank you very much.

Hi and welcome to ESC1, the Graduating Class of 2019.
It is a privilege to be guiding, with the support of Sonia Soares, Donna Grida, Dianne Williams and Stephanie McCaskie 14 amazing students into their final year of education.
In these first few weeks of schooling, the magic of being a Leaver has begun with students receiving their leavers jackets and attending the school ball. Not only did the students rock the halls of Leeming wearing their jackets with pride, but they rocked the dance floor at the Fremantle Sailing Club on the night of the ball.
Many thanks to those staff who attended on the night of the ball: Sonia Soares, Renee Davis, Kylee Long, Colleen Putland, Sapitha Mahalingam, Scott Brechany, Tanya Payne and Chelsea Hackett, and to Leticia Grant and Kelvin May for hosting the pre-ball. It was definitely a night to remember.
The celebrations don’t stop there! Congratulations to Allara May and Ben Moore for being awarded Bell and Beau of the Ball, to Caden Sharp for receiving the Merit Certificate for ESC1 and to Sarah Convery and William Costa for gaining employment at ACTIV Bentley over the Christmas holidays.
I am so proud of all the students in the dedication they have displayed towards their studies since the onset of the year. They have displayed the commitment and enthusiasm to set goals through their english studies and My Plans seizing every opportunity to learn. As they say:
“It’s when you strive for greatness that great things happen.” Ms FP

The staff and students in ESC 2 have had a busy and exciting start to the year. ESC 2 has a fantastic team with Ms Carter, Ms Close-Mc, Mrs Shivers and Mr Muir. Students have been participating in a range of activities in the class and I am impressed with how well they have been adapting to their new routines. The staff in ESC 2 are also impressed with the high standard of positive team work and independence displayed by the students. I feel honoured and privileged to be teaching the students I have in my class and look forward to seeing them individually grow. It has been a pleasure to meet most parents during the My Plan meetings and I look forward to working with you all throughout the year.
This term we started on our P Units of English and Maths, as well as the ASDAN programs Out in the Community. We will be focussing on rules in our school, home and community in preparation for our Community Based Learning program where we will visit local shopping centres in our area. Students also explored the importance of rules in our community by conducting surveys and creating an Imovie. Lots will be happening so watch this space!
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT - BEN SHAW

A big thankyou to the parents, families and specialists for your time and valuable contributions in the IEP meetings. These meetings create wonderful opportunities to share in your child’s achievements and develop supportive networks to enrich the learning of each student.
The term has started with a Citizenship Project and students have risen to the challenge of defining new words and learning ways to demonstrate respect, responsibility, fairness and trustworthiness. The students have started their Community Based Learning at Southlands Shopping Centre and are already displaying these citizenship qualities.
I will be taking long service leave starting on the 14th March and the students are very happy that the lovely Mrs Jo Lee will taking over the teaching for the rest of term 1. Mrs Lee is an extremely talented teacher and is looking forward to working with the best class in the school!
The students are to be commended on their independence when transitioning around the school, attending tutor group, assemblies and option classes with their peers. The staff in ESC 5 are impressed with the high standard of positive team work and responsibility displayed and would like to congratulate each and every student. Well done!
We look forward to a busy and exciting year!

Hello and welcome to 2019! I am so excited to have my class of wonderful year 8’s this year, and am looking forward to many new and exciting events and challenges.
So far we have enjoyed catching up with our old and new friends after the long Christmas break, and have jumped straight back into the swing of things. In the first couple of weeks back we made beautiful identify collages. Have a look at Hanna’s below.
We have a new Science teacher, and are learning about body parts of different animals. We are also loving our option classes so far including PE, home economics and D&T. During literacy students read the book If I were the Prime Minister. We then discussed what we would do if we were Prime Minister. Henry’s work was so impressive, he received a prize from Mrs Davies for his work!
We have certainly settled back into the routines of high school.
Have a look below at the best parts of year 8 so far.
Hanna: I enjoy DI because I like working hard and in a team
Karleigh: My favourite part of year 8 is DI because I work very hard and learn about sounds.
Raymond: I like CBL because we are going to Cockburn Gateways Shopping Centre. We can go there by 516 bush and train in Mandurah line.
Taine: My favourite part of school is typing my work on the iPad and running on the oval at sport.
Lachy: My favourite part of school is playing on the playground. I like to eat the food I make at cooking. I like maths work.
Matthew: At school I like reading books in the reading corner. I like cutting and gluing pictures.
Henry: Hello my name is Henry. This year my favourite subject is DI and earning blocks to get a prize on Friday. I like buying nachos for lunch and being with my friends. I enjoy doing science on Mondays.
Ezra: This year in year 8 I am looking forward to going on CBL. We are going to Gateways on the bus and train and we get to buy lunch. I like maths groups and playing bingo. I am excited about going to vamp. I hope we can play on a playgr9und. I want to wear pyjamas and watch a movie.
Science:
Bring on year 8!
2019 has gotten off to a great start in ESC 7.
It has been pleasing to see, the overall smooth and motivated effort from the class in their transition to high school. I have enjoyed getting to know each of the students. So far they have engaged in a variety of classes including, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), cooking, sport, D&T (Design & Technology), music, CBL (Community Based Learning), Bush Rangers, protective behaviours, health, HASS (Humanities & Social Sciences) and person centred planning.
We also have started our Direct Instruction Reading Mastery program and continue to focus on literacy/english and mathematics skills each day.
Take a look at some of our learning in action so far!

What an amazing start to 2019 with cheerful year 7 students adapting to the high school routine. To my surprise ESC 8 students have familiarised themselves to the school, class routines and structures and are making great progress in developing some new friendships. They are thoroughly enjoying the different curricular activities offered to them like music, D&T, phys ed, home economics, science and STEM. ESC 8 has also been engaging in work skills program where they are learning about manual handling and occupational health and safety. Bush Rangers program is conducted on Mondays where ESC 8 have been striving to achieve the code of conduct by wearing the Bush Rangers shirt every Monday and being responsible citizens by taking care of the environment.
Geography has been fun exploring the facilities in the community. Students have also been practicing road safety skills and behaviour in the community which is a very important life skill.
The students are also learning to improve their reading skills by participating in the DI reading program as well as research skills by going to the library once a week. They are also learning to research using technology and resources from the library.
Students have been rostered on jobs which they carry on for the week developing their independent life skills. A big Thank You to the parents and carers for supporting my class programs and my wonderful education assistants Mrs Sajjay and Ms Patterson for great team work. We look forward to a fantastic year ahead with Luke, Ryley, Nicholas, Sebastian, Isaiah, Kenneth and Mason.

The beginning of Year 8 has been busy and very productive for ESC 9. We welcomed 4 new students into our fantastic team as well as Mrs Bruns, Mrs Blacklock and Mrs Festa! We have been learning about Earth and Space Sciences, the purpose of text and investigating climate change in HASS. These growing minds are loving home economics (chicken burritos are the best!), music with Mrs Damos and Phys Ed with their new teacher Miss Heard.
Check out the student’s thoughts on Year 8 so far……
Nathan: “I like multiplication Bingo and making food in home economics.”
Harvey: “I’ve enjoyed catching up with my friends after the long holiday break. I love using Book Creator during literacy, it’s really fun.”
Keira: “I like literacy, math groups and HASS. It’s great when I earn 5 ticks and can beat Mrs Knox at Uno.”
Makenzie: “I’m really looking forward to camp and the Bush Ranger march with Sam.”
Alyssa: “I love counting numbers in math groups, doing puzzles and cooking in home economics.”
Orlando: “I love the home made recipes in cooking and doing experiments in science.”
Ayrton: “I feel very proud of my neat handwriting and good work in math groups.”
Nekoda: “I love to bang the drums in music and dance to the beat.”

Hi and welcome to ESC 13! We are a collective team of talented, humorous and supportive individuals who are going to push the boundaries this year with our positive attitudes toward all areas of life and our commitment to reaching (and sometimes exceeding) our set goals!
Technology is a big part of our classroom, with some programs being taught through the use of iPads or laptops. Students will access their emails, save data on their USBs and the shared drive and access online programs. With the implementation of Seesaw parents and carers can be involved in keeping up with what students are doing on a regular basis.
Line dancing is a new program this year which encourages coordination, sequencing and fitness. It has already proven to be valuable as several students were able to dance to ‘Nut Bush City Limits’ and ‘Macarena’ at the Ball in February after having learned the dance steps in the initial weeks of school. It was inspiring to see students keeping the beat and dancing in unison with all other students.
We welcome the input from therapists who are timetabled several periods throughout the week, offering strategies and further support to improve the overall communication, relationships and life skills for our students through multi-modal communication.
In term 2 our team will be joining with Mr Roberts’ class for a three-day camp. The activities organised for camps foster social skills and learning in new ways. They are a great opportunity for students to build new relationships and practice their independence. Details will be sent out in the coming weeks.
The staff: Mrs Long, Ms Mahalingam, Mrs Putland, Mrs Smithson and myself are thoroughly enthusiastic to be part of the journey in the development of these fine young teenagers.
We have an amazing class and have had a fantastic start to 2019!
The students have begun their workplace learning places and we have had a lot of class discussion on behaviours and expectations in the workplace.
CBL for this term will be at Gateways which will give students the opportunity to practise travel training as well as money skills.
The class is focusing on learning the Australian National Anthem and listening to stories about well-known Australian people. We have been learning about Banjo Patterson and his wonderful poetry such as The Man from Snowy River and Waltzing Matilda. We have read and enjoyed the book, The Man from Snowy River and completed some interesting worksheets.
A big welcome to the wonderful team we have in ESC 14, Mrs Murugan, Ms Riley and Mrs Lester-Smith.

It has been a fun filled and productive start to the new school year for all those involved in the Year 11.2 classroom. The students enjoyed some getting to know you exercises on the first day and also carried out some fun science activities such as constructing balloon rockets that ran along a thread. Then they were challenged to see who could make the fastest rocket in the class by making changes to their equipment.

We soon settled in and started work on our ongoing courses. This included several students beginning their P Units in mathematics and english, whilst others continued making progress with their functional mathematics and english skills.
We also began planning for our ASDAN “Out in the Community” unit, which involves the students in planning excursions and using public transport to places like Cockburn Gateways Shopping Centre and to Zone Bowling Cannington. Activities such as these will allow them to practise their transport training and their social skills as the year continues.

All students have now started their work placements and every one of them reports they are having a good time.
On a personal note, the Education Assistants I have working with me are nothing short of excellent and I feel that I am very lucky to have them in my classroom. The students have now settled in very well and I look forward to a productive year with all of them.
A tremendous start to the 2019 Workplace Learning program from all senior students in week 3. As students have entered into their new work placements and presented in a very professional manner and all displaying to the host employers what great work ethics they all have.
A special mention to the following students who have or are commencing school based traineeships this year:
- Anna Johnson - Community Services
- Tayla Sherratt - Community Services
- Nick Leone - Community Services
- Christy Newton - Retail
- Kye Strawbridge - Automotive Tyre Serving Technology
These students will be working toward a Certificate II in the chosen industry.
It’s been a busy few weeks in the Person Centred Planning world. The new year 7s have been comparing their favourite things with their classmates, while the year 8s have been identifying the different people who support them.
In year 9 we are discussing decision-making and identifying what decisions we make on a daily basis. The year 10s are preparing for their first My Plan meetings and have created some brilliant brainstorm documents to take with them.
In year 11 we are discussing the difference between a ‘right’ and a ‘want’.
It’s been a fantastic start to the year.
I would also like to congratulate Ryan Bunce on his fantastic efforts in earning the first merit certificate for the year.
Hello everyone!
My name is Jenelle Heard and I am the new Health and Physical Education teacher for 2019 while Ms Allomes is on maternity leave. I am looking forward to a fun, action packed and exciting year ahead.
This term in week 8 on Thursday, we have an interschool Cricket Carnival to compete at the WACA. We will be selecting one team of lucky year 9 and 10 students.
In Physical Education lessons, the year 7, 8 and 10 students have been developing their Cricket skills this term. Some year 11’s have been learning Soccer skills and year 9’s with the remaining year 11’s have been participating swimming lessons at Riverton Leisure Centre. We have also had Rob from “Recoyle Fitness” taking the year 7 and 8 students for boxing and fitness circuits every Thursday which has been great fun!
A busy term ahead in Physical Education. Sports Leaders will be presented this week in class time. They will then be announced at the next assembly and in the next newsletter.
Congratulations to all the students, teachers and EA’s for a fantastic start to the year. Students, remember your sport uniform, hat and water bottle on PE days please!
