As Term 1 draws to a close, we reflect on a vibrant and successful start to the 2025 school year at Leeming SHS Education Support Centre. We warmly welcome all families, especially those joining our community for the first time, and congratulate our Year 7 students on an excellent beginning to their high school journey. Their confidence has grown each week, and seeing their personalities shine as they settle into their new environment has been a pleasure.
This term has been filled with a wide range of engaging programs and activities, including beach swimming, paddle boarding, Year 12 Ball, Harmony Day, Year 8 and 10 camps, the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra concert, the Bush Ranger program, and various community-based learning opportunities. Our senior students have also participated in work experience and TAFE programs, strengthening their skills and independence.
Our student leadership group has made a strong start, proudly representing the school, upholding our USTAR values, and participating in leadership development through WADSA and school-based initiatives. Their enthusiasm and teamwork have been commendable.
We have been pleased to welcome several new staff members to Leeming SHS ESC this year. Mrs Vani Sambhara has joined our leadership team as Deputy Principal. Bradley Dusting has joined our Chaplaincy team alongside Simon Fenby, supporting student wellbeing and pastoral care on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We also welcomed Natalie Felstead, one of our Year 9 teachers and education assistants, Jenna Little, Owen Holden, and Tina Darlington.
This term, we have farewelled two valued staff members. Brett Rodoreda has left to pursue further study. He will be greatly missed for his calm, friendly nature and exceptional ability to unlock the potential in our students. Jonnine Kaiser has retired after more than 15 years of dedicated service as an education assistant at Leeming SHS ESC. She will be fondly remembered for her remarkable passion for art and extraordinary talent in nurturing every student's creative spirit. We sincerely thank them both for their contributions to our school community and wish them all the very best in their next adventures.
We are fortunate to be guided by a collaborative School Board. The Board meets twice a term to discuss the school’s objectives, priorities and policies.
2025 Board members include:
Parent Representatives – Olivia Sjahrir (Board Chair), Sheila Koh, Lydia Jiang, Medline Manhanzva
Staff Representatives – Kerryn Coles, Emma Gage, Keran Davies (Principal) and Carol Rodoreda (Manager of Corporate Services)
Community Representative – Dawn Barker
Looking ahead to Term 2, we are excited to host our annual Pop-Up Shops, where students showcase their enterprise projects. We also look forward to New Beginnings to an Old Story, an annual event that forms part of our Reconciliation Action Plan. This celebration of Aboriginal culture provides an opportunity for the whole school community to come together to embrace, acknowledge, educate and celebrate the knowledge and contributions of First Nations People.
Thank you to all staff, students, and families for contributing to a successful start to the school year. We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break and look forward to another rewarding term.
Keran Davies
Happy New Year! Congratulations to our students, parents/carers and staff on making it through the first term of 2025!
It was a massive celebration with the kids back to their regular school schedules and an enormous sigh of relief for most of us. We welcome the new students and families who have joined us this year and are excited to meet you all.
The board members for 2025 are - Keran Davies, Kerryn Coles, Carol Rodoreda, Emma Gage, Dawn Barker, Lydia Jiang, Medline Manhanzva, Sheila Koh and myself, Olivia Sjahrir.
Sadly, we say goodbye to Karl James, who, due to work commitments, ended his tenure on the board. We appreciate and thank Karl's hard work and contribution as a member.
As usual, the board reconvened twice this term, during which we went through our annual inductions and discussed other matters concerning the school, such as budget, capital, and minor works projects. Some time was spent reviewing the Business Plan, endorsing the Annual Report, and work health and safety protocols.
We met and welcomed our new Chaplain, Bradley Dusting, who will be at the school on Mondays and Thursdays. Bradley will work closely with Simon Fenby, our other Chaplain, who is here on Tuesdays.
We are proud to be part of the Quality Teaching School program, where we were chosen as one of the leading schools. Keran Davies and Kerryn Coles had the opportunity to recently attend a conference with over 300 people from schools across WA, where Partner Schools presented positive data and information of Teaching for Impact in their schools during 2024. We also look forward to continuing our close relationship with our partner school, Dianella ESC Secondary College, through this program.
A big applause goes to Lou Franceschini-Piil for organising the 'Approaching Adulthood Workshop' with DDWA. This event was almost 1 year in the making. It was wonderful to see such a large turnout of families attend the day and leave feeling well-informed and seen. The event was run by staff from DDWA who had lived-in experience, and we are excited about more workshops in the future.
Also, a big thank you to the parents who were able to attend the year 7 Morning Tea; it was lovely to meet you. Parents/carers are a wealth of knowledge, and these smaller informal events are an excellent opportunity to meet, share stories and get to know a few key staff members at the school.
Have a fantastic school break & we will see you in the cooler months in Term 2!
Thank you, Olivia Sjahrir
Our inaugural event for 2025 was the Year 12 Ball, celebrated on Friday, February 21st, 2025, at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. Congratulations to both the staff and students for orchestrating a highly successful occasion. Everyone looked stunning!
Congratulations to the best dressed: Adriano Vozarevic & Janelle Quek

Teamwork: We cooperate with others Achievement: We try our best Self-Responsibility: We are organised and on time for lessons |
This year, we continued to celebrate our staff and students and their achievements at our ESC assemblies through the USTAR behaviour and attendance raffles and the USTAR point milestone wristbands. We also acknowledged classes that earned the highest amount of USTAR points for the focus value of the fortnight. Winning classes were presented with a certificate at the ESC assemblies and were rewarded with a Tarak plush toy and a pizza lunch party.
Congratulations to ESC2 and ESC11 for winning the Tarak Award at the week 6 and 10 ESC assembly for our focus values; Achievement and Self-Responsibility.
Last year the PBS theme song was implemented into our explicit, weekly PBS lessons and at our ESC assemblies. It has been wonderful to see the school learning the PBS theme song and singing it loud and proud at the ESC assemblies.

The start of 2025 has been very exciting in the PE department! Welcome to Mr El Chami, who has joined the PE team! Classes have been learning new skills in Basketball, Tennis, Fundamental Movements, and Fitness routines. Well done to all classes for showing self-responsibility and doing a great job remembering their hats, sports uniforms, and water bottles on sports days.
The year 10 students have participated in a 5-week Stand Up Paddle Boarding Program run by Perth SUP school. Students developed skills to carry boards safely, transition from stomach to knees to feet, and use the paddle correctly to control movement and direction. We discovered that falling off is part of the fun! Thank you to Nicki, our amazing SUP coach who challenged, supported, and encouraged us to get out of our comfort zones!
We look forward to working with Nicki and Perth SUP School as an ongoing partnership with Leeming ESC.
The year 9 students commenced their Beach Safety program at Port Coogee Marina this term. Students have been learning about beach safety signs and how to navigate them, where to locate safety devices (e.g., defibrillator, first aid, rescue tubes), how to perform a tow rescue, and participating in a range of beach games. Spending our Fridays at the beach in the warm summer weather has been lovely!
We look forward to term 2, with many exciting events, including the Kalability AFL carnival, Soccer Tournament, The Push Up Challenge, Rugby WA clinics, and much more!

Miss Heard, Mr El Chami and Ms Pereira
ESC 9 has had a great start to the year, with our students completing their first high school term! It has been great to see budding leaders in our classroom, with Clarinda and Edric elected as house captains for their factions and Jordan becoming the class leader. All students have consistently shown unity, self-responsibility, teamwork, achievement, and respect, our USTAR values.
Over the term, students have been practising different maths operations: addition, subtraction, and multiplication. It has been wonderful to see their progress as they improve their speed and accuracy with sums.
Students have been sharing their weekly news using the Colourful Semantics program for literacy. Students have been learning to follow conventions of recount writing, including writing in past tense and ensuring to include the who, what, where, when, what doing and how. Students have also been practising their sight words and completing group-based literacy tasks through our middle school program, Reading Mastery and Emergent Literacy.
For Bush Rangers, students have been learning about the Australian, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Western Australian flags. They have also been learning about the roles and responsibilities of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and how they work to protect our native plants and animals.
For Science, ESC 9 has been learning about living things and their characteristics. Students have also been learning about habitats and what makes an environment conducive to the needs of a living thing. Students have enjoyed walking around the school and writing down living and non-living things they have observed.
This term has been full of celebrations and events such as Harmony Week, viewing the WASO concert at school, and visiting Donald and Daisy’s eight new adorable ducklings! We are also looking forward to the excursion this week to watch the theatre production of The Little Prince in Claremont.
We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter break and look forward to all that’s coming in term 2!
From Mrs M, Miss Little, Ms Xavier and Mrs Bregger.

What a fantastic start to High School we have had in ESC6! Students have adapted to this big transition, knowing their timetables, following our classroom/school expectations, and, most importantly, earning plenty of USTAR points to demonstrate school values. We are already forming strong relationships in our class, and it’s been a joy to watch friendships develop among our students.
Students have been busy in maths, focusing on place value to develop their understanding of money and fractions better. We have also been skip-counting and have especially enjoyed the buzz game!
During literacy, students have been engaging in their Direct Instruction and Emergent Literacy program and have started the Spelling Mastery program, targeting their spelling abilities. This term, we have a ‘News’ program where students have been sharing information about their favourite TV shows, books, hobbies and more. This has been a great way to get to know each other, and we have found some interesting facts.
We have been reading the novel, ‘The Little Prince’ in class, and we can’t wait for the last week of term to watch this text come to life on the big stage as we take to Clairemont Showgrounds to watch the theatre production.
Students have enjoyed the Bush Rangers program, where they have engaged in activities linked to Australian flags and their meanings. They have also learned about Australia’s War on Waste, targeting Australia’s waste problem and developing sustainable solutions to help.
During HASS, we have focused on celebrations around the world. We learned about the Chinese New Year, learning our own Zodiac Signs and their meanings, and shared a traditional Chinese New Year meal in class. We also celebrated Harmony Week through many multicultural activities and are currently learning about the importance of ANZAC Day and its significance to our country today.
We are preparing for next term by making our items for our Pop-Up shops, where we make keychains, cloud dough, pet rocks and earrings.
We wish all families a safe and happy Easter holiday and look forward to more learning with our year 7s in term 2.
From the team of ESC6.
As we wrap up the first term of the school year, we’re excited to share how well our students have settled into high school life. It has been a term full of learning, creativity, and new experiences, with our students embracing everything that comes their way, mostly enthusiastically!
We have started our ASDAN program, which has provided students with valuable skills and hands-on projects, like taking care of their dental hygiene and learning about personal skills and qualities. We have also started creating items for Pop-Up Shop, encouraging students to get creative and entrepreneurial.
Some students have been involved with the after-school Bush Rangers program, allowing students to explore nature and learn essential outdoor survival skills. It’s been a great way to build confidence and teamwork while having fun outdoors.
In sports, our students have been learning basketball, honing their skills and teamwork on the court. It’s been a fun and energetic way to get active and develop new abilities.
In Art class this term, students have explored different artistic techniques, including painting galaxies, creating pom-pom monsters, and designing UFOs. The students have demonstrated incredible imagination and skill, and the art pieces have been impressive.
In the cooking classes, students are busy in the kitchen making various delicious and healthy dishes. From wraps and pancakes to smoothies and vegetarian sausage rolls, the students have enjoyed trying new recipes and learning cooking skills that will serve them for years.
Our Year 7 student cohort had their first excursion, a trip to the theatre to watch “The Little Prince”, which was beautiful and lots of fun.
It’s been a wonderful first term, and we are so proud of how our students have embraced the challenges and opportunities of high school life. We look forward to another exciting term with more learning, growth, and fun!
Ms Wyatt
Welcome back to an already exciting and busy 2025. We were lucky to have some of the same wonderful students in our cohort this year, and we welcomed one new student to our classroom, Summer. We said goodbye to Onashe as he joined Mrs Thomas’ year 8 class next door. However, we still see Onashe at break times and during our option classes. We are excited to continue learning with Miss Gage, Mrs Payne and Mr Kosc, and welcome Mr Holden and Mrs Patterson!
We are looking forward to the exciting things planned for the year and have enjoyed our classes so far, especially our option classes, which include Animation, Music, Work Skills, Home Economics, Art, Design & Technology and Physical Education. In class, we have been learning about adding money and calculating change in Maths, private and public places, body parts and actions in Protective Behaviours, History and how technology has changed over time in HASS and Biological Sciences and life cycles in Science.
In week 7, ESC8 and ESC7 enjoyed our first high school camp at Point Peron Camp School. It was a successful and fun camp filled with exciting activities that built our skills in independence, teamwork and problem-solving. Massive congratulations to Quinn, who won the USTAR Camp Champ award for consistently displaying the USTAR values at camp. Quinn was presented with a Star Award and a $30 Kmart voucher!
Congratulations to Lily for winning the Middle School Student Councillor role and Tanish for winning ESC8 Class Leader for 2025.
Have a look at the photos below to see what we’ve been up to so far this term.
Miss Gage.

ESC 7 started the new year with great enthusiasm! We were delighted to welcome our new student, Onashe, who settled in seamlessly and quickly became a valued member of our class community.
We took a fascinating journey through time this term in HASS, discovering how technology has evolved. Students had a fantastic time comparing past and present technologies, and they were thrilled when Mrs Botha brought in a DVD player and a video recorder for us to explore together. Seeing and touching these devices made history come alive in a fun and interactive way!
Our much-anticipated camp to Point Peron was a tremendous success! Students enjoyed participating in various outdoor activities, including kayaking, snorkelling, rock climbing, and crate stacking. The true highlight of the camp was the talent show after dinner, where our students showcased their incredible talents, cheered for their peers, and created cherished memories that would last a lifetime. Witnessing their confidence and camaraderie in such a supportive environment was wonderful.
We look forward to many more wonderful experiences as we wrap up this fantastic term.

ESC 7 Team
ESC17 has had an awesome first term this year, filled with laughter, excitement, hard work, and amazing teamwork.
As part of our business enterprise this semester, we have begun planning our Pop-Up Shop stall, where we will be making and serving delicious toasties to staff. We have had a great time getting creative with the planning process, including coming up with the name "Toast Malones" for our shop. The students also made a fun and entertaining advertisement video to promote our stall, which we shared with the whole of Leeming ESC at our week 10 assembly.
In addition to all our enterprise work, we have been out and about on CBL trips to Bull Creek and Southlands Shopping Centre, where students have been practising important community and life skills in real-world settings. It has been wonderful to see the confidence and independence of our students grow during these excursions.
Everyone in ESC17 has been filled with laughter and excitement for the year ahead, and it’s shaping up to be an incredible journey together.

Mr Calasse and team
ESC 12 - NATALIE FELSTEAD/POONAM PAWARNI
Our students have settled in so well, and we couldn't be prouder of how they embrace the responsibilities and behaviours of being a Year 9 student.
Students have been diving into the 'Rules and Laws' topic in preparation for the upcoming election. Our students have shown a genuine curiosity about what happens when laws are broken. There have been lots of great questions and discussions!
Fridays have been extra exciting with the Beach Safety Program. Our students have been learning all about different rescue techniques and how to stay safe at the beach. It becomes a highlight of the week!
Speaking of highlights, Harmony Day on March 20th was a huge success! Celebrated by wearing shades of orange to represent 'harmony'. We enjoyed dances from various cultures, played traditional games from around the world, and sampled some amazing food that our families brought in to share. What a delicious way to celebrate diversity!
A big thank you to all the families for your support and collaboration. Your partnership helps us better understand your child's needs and ensures they get the most out of their learning journey.

Enjoy the Easter break, everyone!
ESC 12 Staff: Natalie and Poonam, Tiana, Mel, and Fay.
And with that, Term 1 is done and dusted! We couldn’t have had a better start to the year.
Students have been keeping up with current affairs in their weekly Behind The News lessons during Literacy. We have discussed many topics, including elections, space crafts, and cyclones.
ESC 11 has found so much joy in Drama with the new teacher, Mrs Pritchard. I think we have some future actors in our midst!
On Fridays, the year 9 cohort visited Port Coogee to develop beach safety awareness with Miss Heard. They looked at beach hazards, signage, and rescue procedures. But most importantly, they had a well-deserved swim!
During our free time, the class has also worked hard to develop their green thumbs in our local ESC 11 garden. These Bush Rangers have cleared the weeds, sown seeds, crafted beautiful signs, and watered the garden without fail! Stay tuned for future pictures of this wonderful garden.
Have a relaxing holiday because Term 2 will have many more adventures!
ESC 11 Staff – Lucas, Sarah, Sue and Deb
We have hit the ground running with our first work experience at Leeming strikers. All students have loved getting out of the class to apply the skills they have learnt to a work environment. Each student can be proud of how they have conducted themselves, working as a team to complete various tasks.
This term, we visited the Melville library to collect discarded books, which we are hoping to sell at our annual Pop-Shop next term. We have also been on CBL to Cockburn Gateways, with students showing off their independence when using public transport as well as completing tasks around the shopping centre.
While it was very early this year, our big event this term was our Year 10 Camp to Pinjarra. Due to hot weather, the camp was reduced by one night, however it was a great time. All students participated in activities such as a flying fox, giant swing, high ropes, archery, and a village tour. They finished with the camp's best activity, a pool swim after a long, hot day.
I must thank my staff, Leanne Carter, Lasika Gammage, Kate Thompson, and Toni Broadhurst, for their hard work this term. They do a fantastic job helping the class run as smoothly.
Thanks, Jack Drennan
ESC 4 - LORRAINE VANN/ELLANOR LIETZOW
Wanjoo!
“We acknowledge the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional custodians of the land and its waters and pay respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging’.
ESC 4 would warmly welcome the Year 10 students and their families. It has been wonderful to see the students return to school and reconnect with each other; this bond is enhancing their collaborative skills. Mrs Lietzow and I are very fortunate to have an amazing team this year consisting of Ms Palma, Mrs Harcourt, Mrs Putland, and Mrs Kosc.
The students have started the year tremendously, busily working on a class Kindness project and learning about Executive Functioning skills. Students use their executive functioning to plan, be organised, solve problems, initiate tasks, manage time, and self-regulate. These lifelong skills will support the students in working with increased independence at school and in the workplace.
The class are building on their technology skills, learning to access work activities on the Connect Grid and Seesaw platforms. We have started two ASDAN Programs, E-Safety and Workright. In E-Safety, the focus has been on what personal information is and how we keep information and ourselves safe when online. For Workright, students have been learning about Occupational Health and Safety and what to do in case of an accident or emergency at work. On Tuesdays, the class engages in work experience at Strikers Indoor Sports and Fitness Centre. Glenda is our work supervisor, and her wealth of expertise and experience enriches the learning opportunities of every Year 10 student.
In Bush Rangers, our focus is working safely in natural environments. We have discussed what personal protective clothing and equipment (PPCE) we would apply in different workplaces and when out in nature. We have been identifying hazards and health effects and looking at ways to keep safe. Students put these new skills into practice when they volunteered to collect litter at Bibra Lake Regional Reserve as part of the ‘Clean Up Australia Day ‘project. We enjoyed three beautiful days, and the students played in the playground after their hard work.
The Year 10 Fairbridge camp was a tremendous success, and students are to be commended for displaying the School's values and challenging themselves to engage in various outdoor activities. The camp provided a wonderful opportunity for students to work together and develop friendships.
Both staff and students have had a busy but fun start to the year. Senior School brings new changes, and the students are rising to these challenges. We want to acknowledge and thank families, specialists and, most importantly, the students for their engagement in the ‘My Plan’ meetings. The students have returned and settled into a new routine, displaying self-responsibility with increased independence to develop new skills.
Now it’s time to enjoy a well-deserved holiday, stay safe and enjoy the Easter and Anzac holidays.

Warm wishes, Lorraine Vann, Ellanore Lietzow, Ms Palma, Mrs Harcourt, Mrs Putland, and Mrs Kosc.
ESC2 has had an incredible time establishing class routines while focusing on the class rules generated by the students; we are kind, generous, encouraging our friends, and honest.
Students are now attending Strikers each Tuesday as part of the ASDAN Workright program. They have been magnificent in following instructions from their supervisor and carrying out a range of tasks such as cleaning gym equipment, vacuuming, dusting, folding netball bibs and washing the glass walls in the squash court. Further skills learnt this term include workplace hazards and emergency procedures.
Our Wednesday afternoon class meetings allow students to have a voice in our classroom and practise workplace skills such as communication and negotiation. Students take turns in the roles of chairperson, timekeeper and note-taking. It also helps to have food cooked during Life Skills classes on Fridays at the meeting!
Camp to Fairbridge in Pinjarra was an enormous success, and it was incredible to see students rise to the challenges of the new environment, even in the heat. Students and staff certainly enjoyed the cool relief of the pool.
I liked camp with all my year 10 friends. Maleyk
I liked the giant swing at camp because I liked jumping off the high stand, and I wasn’t the only one who had to do it. Jaylene
The camp was amazing, seeing all students engaged in the activities while showing independence and maturity. Mrs Ogden
Seeing kids in their element on camp was awesome. Mrs Hewer
The stand-up paddle boarding PE program has been the highlight of the term, with a real buzz on Friday mornings.
I liked stand-up paddle boarding because I was happy. Isabel
I liked stand-up paddle boarding because I have perfect balance. Dkhan
My favourite was when I went to Bicton Baths and saw the students’ faces light up with excitement on the paddle boards. Miss Hartree
It was tremendous to spend time with families and students during My Plan meetings, and I thank you all for your willingness to engage and your patience while the documents were finalised.
I liked assembly because my name came up in the attendance draw and I won a prize. Anisha
I like Horticulture on Fridays because I clean the duck pond from the poo. Ethan
I liked Mrs Hewer’s son, Cooper, visiting because he did my class job of desk cleaning. Owen
I liked going on CBL because it’s fun having milkshakes and I liked Cooper visiting because it’s fun having someone new in our class. Isla
It has been an exciting start to the year for ESC15. The students have settled in and demonstrated a strong work ethic and a positive attitude as they tackle each task this year.
The students have commenced their work placements, it has been great to see them push themselves outside their comfort zones and demonstrate excellent dedication in a foreign environment. In English, we have learned about rules and consequences in social settings, and in Math we have focused on money. We’ve learned about many dangers when accessing the online world and how to mitigate them.
In CBL, we visited the shops and purchased items for a class barbecue; we then had a cook-up at school. ESC 15 also had a few trips to the city, including the opportunity to learn about conservation through virtual reality has been a highlight.
As Term 1 is coming to a close, I just want to say thank you to all the staff and students for making it an awesome one!
ESC 14 - LACHIE FREWER/TAMMY MEGRAIL
Students in ESC 14 have settled into their new class brilliantly, and they have made a smooth start to year 11 courses and programs. It is pleasing to see our students demonstrating maturity and independence. The feedback received from work placements has been outstanding; it is clear that everyone is making a positive impression on their new supervisors and colleagues.
In our preliminary English program, students have been learning about rules and consequences in social settings. This prepares them for the future and develops their understanding of societal conventions. In mathematics, we have focused on numeracy in real life. We practised our shopping skills by budgeting how many packets of sausages and buns were needed to feed our class. We practised our shopping skills by determining the money required to purchase all the items. Students have also developed a weekly timetable to differentiate school, work, and leisure time throughout.
Students have planned and prepared for a museum and art gallery excursion. We enjoyed learning about the Kimberley region, which aligned nicely with our Bush Ranger Cadet program.
Thank you to Mrs Tan, Mrs Murrigan, Ms Enright and Mr Rodereda for all their support this term.
We wish all our school community a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing you in term two.
Mr Frewer and Ms Megrail

ESC 10 Team
Ms Rasmussen, Mrs Bartlett, Mrs Bruns, Mrs C & Mrs M
The ESC 1 Team would like to extend a warm welcome to all families for the 2025 school year! We’ve had a fantastic start, with all our students settling in beautifully as they begin their final year of school. As the senior cohort, there’s been a buzz of excitement around taking on the responsibility of great role models for the younger students. We presented the Year 12 students with their Leavers Jackets, which they’re wearing with pride!
Although the year ahead will be busy, every student eagerly embraces the journey, excited to make the most of their final year by taking on every opportunity and creating unforgettable memories. To celebrate this special year, our students attended the much-anticipated School Ball on Friday, February 21st, at the Rydges Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle. It was a night of fun, laughter, and great memories—everyone looked fantastic, the food was delicious, and the dance floor was the highlight!
Academically, the students have jumped into their new programs and already started their work placements. For the Year 12 Literacy program, the focus has been on creating a "Career Profile," where students reflect on their personal skills, talents, interests, and values. This has been an exciting opportunity for everyone to explore their individual strengths and set meaningful goals for the future. In Maths, we've been exploring mental strategies and will continue with practical tasks involving money to help reinforce everyday life skills.
As a team, we have also been working together on our ASDAN Business Enterprise unit. After brainstorming ideas, we have come up with a mini-enterprise concept, and the students are now moving into the next stage—planning, delegating roles, and setting responsibilities to ensure its success. It’s inspiring to see them collaborate and grow together as they take on this exciting project!
With such a positive and enthusiastic start, I am really looking forward to sharing more of our exciting adventures with you throughout the year.
ESC 1 Team

It has been a busy but rewarding start to the year for our Year 12 students in ESC13. They have actively engaged in external workplace learning and TAFE courses, gaining valuable real-world experience supporting their transition beyond school. These opportunities have allowed students to develop meaningful life and work skills while gaining confidence in new environments.
Students have been working extremely hard in the classroom on their Preliminary Mathematics and English units. They have shown great focus and determination, consistently challenging themselves to improve their skills. Whether mastering key numeracy concepts or strengthening literacy skills, their progress has been commendable.
This term has focused primarily on goal setting, with students identifying short-term and long-term aspirations for their final year of schooling. Through their My Plans, they have reflected on their strengths, areas for growth, and personal ambitions. Working alongside families during this process was a pleasure, ensuring that each student has a clear and meaningful pathway forward. Many students have already made great strides towards their goals, whether improving their confidence in the workplace, refining their budgeting skills, or becoming more independent in their learning.
There is plenty of excitement surrounding next term's pop-up shop, which is linked to our ASDAN unit, Business Enterprise. This hands-on project will allow students to develop essential business and entrepreneurial skills, including planning, teamwork, customer service, and financial management. The enthusiasm and creativity already brewing around this project suggests it will be a fantastic experience for everyone involved.
This year's cohort is truly special—their positive attitudes, hard work, and camaraderie makes coming to work each day a joy. Seeing the students embrace new challenges and push themselves towards their goals is inspiring. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing what they achieve in the coming months.

Exploring the Cosmos through Art
Our latest artistic journey has taken us on a fascinating adventure through space. Over the past weeks, we have created art inspired by galaxies, stars, constellations, aliens, the breathtaking Southern Lights, and courageous astronauts. This journey has sparked our imagination and equipped us with new terminology and skills to bring these celestial wonders to life on canvas.
Discovering New Techniques
Our exploration of space-themed art has introduced us to various techniques and mediums. From the vibrant colours used to depict the swirling galaxies to the delicate brushstrokes needed to capture the ethereal glow of the Southern Lights, each piece has presented a unique challenge and opportunity for growth. We have experimented with different textures and colours to create realistic portrayals of stars and constellations and even ventured into science fiction by imagining what aliens might look like.
We look forward to continuing this journey, exploring new themes and techniques that will allow us to express our imagination and creativity even further.Student Activities
During term 1, students have engaged in activities to celebrate Harmony Day, World Down Syndrome Day, Epilepsy Day, and World Autism Day. In their classes, students learned about these days and wore different colours to spread awareness. Next term, we look forward to participating in Mindful May and The Push Up Challenge for Mental Health and celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia, and Transphobia & many more events.

Whole School Approach to Health
This year, the Health and Wellbeing Committee is focusing on promoting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) across Leeming SHS ESC. SEL plays a critical role in developing good mental health and is linked to better social, academic, and occupational outcomes.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) model of SEL encompasses five interrelated skill domains:
- Self-awareness refers to an understanding of one’s emotions and is underpinned by our perception of ourselves, including our strengths and self-efficacy.
- Self-management is linked to self-awareness, the ability to regulate our emotions and how we behave. Self-management skills include impulse control, self-motivation and self-discipline, setting goals, perseverance, managing stress and organisation.
- Social awareness encompasses our understanding of and ability to empathise with others, understanding social rules and norms, respecting others, and perspective-taking.
- Relationship skills allow us to navigate social interactions and make and maintain positive relationships successfully. This includes listening, communicating our needs, negotiating, and cooperating.
- Responsible decision-making refers to how we make decisions regarding our behaviour that affects other people around us, considering safety, social norms, ethics and considering outcomes of possible actions.
We are using the CASEL mode to evaluate current programs and practices at our school to teach SEL skills effectively. This includes adopting a universal approach, which includes school-wide teaching of SEL skills through PBS (USTAR), Peaceful Kids (a mindfulness-based SEL program), Bush Rangers, and more. In addition to school-wide programs, students are taught specific skills through consistent processes as opportunities arise, e.g., using restorative practices. Teaching SEL at schools helps students learn to generalise SEL skills to build their resilience over time.
We have had a very busy and bustling term in the workplace learning department. Students have been thriving as they have been working hard within their workplace teams. Here’s what a few students had to say this term:
Adrian.Z at Bunnings – I like watering and moving around well in my wheelchair. I like putting stock on shelves and I like meeting and talking to the staff.
JJ at Star Car Wash – I work at Star Car Wash in Cockburn. The best thing is I get to see all the different cars. My favourite is a white Lexus.
Walter at Civic Library – I like working at library, making the coffee tray first. I say good morning to Judy and then do more work. The library is great.
Izzie at Crossways Café – I like it in the kitchen area making up toasties. I also like grating the carrots. I like making up the roast dinners like pork and vegetables. I like to make up the milkshakes. I like working with the people in the kitchen. They are friendly, and they help me.
Sheona at Alinea – I work at Alinea. One of my jobs is sorting clothes. My favourite thing about work is meeting new people.
Coby at Brandons Shredding – I stand up to do shredding. I like shredding. I like the big shredder.
Luke at St Luke’s Community Garden – I work at St. Luke’s Community Garden in Mosman Park. I weed the garden beds and water plants with a hose. My favourite thing is looking at all the birds that come into the garden.
Goldie at Workpower – I work at Workpower in Bentley. I packaged headphones for the airlines. I always try my best at work.
At the assembly, it was a pleasure to award Star Awards to Ethan and Riley for their efforts and progress at the Mens Shed. Both young men are operating machinery and tools safely as they engage with the varying woodwork projects in the workshop. Throughout the placement, their independence and confidence are increasing. Well done, Ethan and Riley, on a fantastic term of work experience!
Our Employee of the Month was awarded to Philip. The team at St John of God Cafe are very impressed with his work efforts and initiative. They really appreciate his assistance at the service counter, delivering customer orders, and maintaining the dining area for patrons, and Philip looks for ways to assist in any way. His contributions have been outstanding! Way to go Philip!!

Wishing everyone a great break and a Happy Easter!
We look forward to the program recommencing in term 2 week 1.
